FX's page confirms that this is indeed a remake of the 1980's Shogun. Which itself was based on James Clavell's best selling book, also named Shogun. The book, and show, will be centered on the fictional shipwrecked English trader, John Blackthorne. Which mimics the real life of William Adams. In fact very few Japanese even knew of its existence. When the Americans found the craft they were shocked and confused by it, and when they decided to test the craft, designed by Tomio Kubo the designer of the Ki-46 "Dinah", they were amazed at it performance. Even though it was a heavy fighter plane it performed on par with a lot of America's single engine fighter planes and out did their heavy fighters. Who knows what could've been had Japan been able to put this into production a year earlier.

However, there are those that arent ready to give up such as Hijikata Toshizo, vice commander of the Shinsengumi. His plan leads to the Battle of Utsunomiya. Despite this Edo, the seat of Shogunal power, falls. Tokugawa Yoshinobu has Katsu Kaishu negotiate with Saigo Takamori for a surrender. This would be known as the Fall of Edo and was a major event in the Boshin War.

However, they didn't have the money to immediately do so. In what would seem as a complete betrayal of the Sonno Joi movement (expel the barbarians) they would promise to honour all the treaties the old government made with the foreign powers. After this there was the unfortunate Sakai Incident. Where French sailors would get into a armed fight with a Tosa regiment, and would lose many of their fellow sailors. The French after this would demand compensation (even though they caused it). At the same time that this was happening the Imperial Army was able to move on Edo, and get into a fight with Kondo Isami, leader of the feared shinsengumi. This would be known as the Battle of Koshu Katsunuma.

While the former Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, had lost his title he still had almost the same amount of power. Something that Imperial Reformist Saigo Takamori and his Satcho Alliance (Satsuma and Choshu) wouldn't tolerate. He would hire thugs and ronin to cause unrest. Which prompted the former Shogun and his allies to head towards Kyoto. It was at this time that the Battle of Toba Fushimi and the Battle of Awa took place.

Under his direction the Kiheitai would be given modern weapons, and trained in western tactics. This made them super effective. Especialy when fighting against the Tokugawa Shogunates troops, who didnt have the same weaponry or training at this time. Because of this the Kiheitai were really Japan's First Modern Soldiers.

It also was the beginning of the end for the samurai. These Black Ships, as they would be called by the locals, were not there for a friendly visit. They were there to force Japan open to trade with the West ending the country's 200 year policy of isolation, known as Sakoku. This would ultimately result in the Boshin War, which would in turn lead to the Satsuma Rebellion. The Boshin War, also known as the Japanese Civil War, would give rise to Imperial nationalism, and would have its effects felt all the way through the Second World War.
