Growing tired and refusing to eat as an act of defiance, Echo ended up dying from being malnourished and when Zola learned of this, he supplied her body with his recreated version of the Super Solider Serum in an attempt to save her. But when it didn't work, he grew desperate and began to experiment on her further by using other methods and even supplied her with a newer and revamped serum which had finally brought her back to life. A month later, she and Bucky and the others were saved by Steve.Seeking answers for herself, Echo tagged along with the Howling Commandos to capture Zola aboard the train. Entrapped by HYDRA guards, Echo had been rendered unconscious and taken from the train in secret to a Soviet POW Camp. In care of the new HYDRA, and with her friend Bucky yet again, the two were subjected to the Winter Solider Program. Memory suppressed and brainwashed, HYDRA used them interchangeably to avoid them gaining memories of one another and placing them in cryostasis chambers to prolong their aging through so many years. They ended up using Bucky more because as it turns out, Echo actually ended up having the power to manipulate the earth so HYDRA basically just disregarded her since it was a age of soldiers and not of supers.
