Handpan 360 Ensemble // Dreamscape // Peter Levitov & Friends Handpan 360 2021-04-14 | This kind of piece has been a dream of mine for years. Ever since I first heard a Handpan Solo, I immediately also heard lush layered harmonies. Nearly a decade later, I finally designed this ensemble set of 4 Handpans to create note for note, beautifully harmonious and layered chords that were easy for anyone to play. Jacob Lee of Axiom Handpans was kind enough to build them for me and the result is the ability to compose pieces with rich harmonies built into the natural motions of playing. I am so grateful for my students, Mark Burlingame and Nan Ryan. We were able to record this just before the pandemic hit, and at that time they had been playing less than a year. For this piece I was very impressed with their ability to both sight right my notation and improvise. We are very much looking forward to meeting again soon and sharing more with you as soon as we can. I hope you enjoy. Handpan 360 Ensemble - March to Misty Mountain Handpan 360 2022-10-13 | Happy Handpan day! To celebrate, I am so pleased to share more of our local Handpan Ensemble. The Handpan 360 Ensemble has been a dream of mine for nearly a decade. I am thrilled that, thanks to my amazing students and builders, it is now a reality. This session was recorded at Heartwood Studio in December of 2019, just 8 months after these students began playing handpan. I couldn't be more proud and blown away by these amazing people. Since 2011, I have been developing a notation system that is easy and fluid enough for anyone to read, regardless of musical experience. During this recording, we are mostly sight reading. The goal of this project is to introduce the ecstatic joy of group Handpan play to anybody and everyone who wants to experience it. I have always loved how easy it is to sit down in front of a handpan and flow into beautiful music. I designed these scales with that in mind. They play perfectly with each other, creating beautiful cascading harmonies, without having to overthink the process. The theory is built into the notation and system, so students are free to just play. The builder of these Handpans, Jacob Lee of Axiom Handpans was instrumental in putting this ensemble together. Two of my favorite players and people in the world, Jacob Cole and Kabeção. This Tabla and Handpan duet has everything I look for in a jam. These guys were so connected and polished when they performed, demonstrating the magic and love of this art form at its best. Listening, feeling, reverence, joy, passion...all shining through. This incredible moment, all was quiet, kind of a miracle at that gathering because so much was going on everywhere. These times come and go and, as we have learned, sometimes we don't see each other for years or ever again. Our time together is a treasure. It's depth and character has moved me so much, reminding me how I felt when I first began playing Handpan. At the same time, I was reading and very inspired by an epic fantasy series called "The Stormlight Archive" 🤓 The main character breathes light, which has always been my experience with these instruments, from the first moment I touched one. The sound feels like liquid light that you can breathe and swim in. I am often moved by the shared similarities between fiction and music. Return // Improvisation for Handpan & Cello // Peter Levitov & John David Eriksen Handpan 360 2021-06-23 | This improvisation took place a few weeks ago, and was the first time either of us had played with another musician for over a year after a long period of isolation. We were so excited, and nervous, and not quite sure how to even act socially LOL. It was a wonderfully poignant and delicate moment. John David Eriksen is a dear friend and an outstanding cellist and improviser. We have been playing together on and off for nearly a decade now, united by our love for the unexpected joys, delights, and sometimes terrifying expanse of pure improvisation. Due to special patented technology there's up to 6 harmonics tuned on each tongue. On a central note of drum there's 7 harmonics tuned. It's possible to separate those harmonics and extend the range of the instrument to full 2 octaves of the scale. Imagine 8 bells tuned to the scale and on each of them all the partials are tuned as well! That's how we would describe the sound of this instrument.The instrument is developed and being made by Andrej Remjannikov.It's fine tuned instrument which can be played by beginners and byprofessional musicians.
