Randy Cole"It' s like the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance, but with Coltrane", remarked Al McLean with a chuckle. The reference was to the iconic scene from "Back To The Future", where Marty McFly introduced the world to Chuck Berry. McLean's doo-wap version of the Coltrane linked ballad, "Say it Over and Over Again" fits as a fabulous proxy for McFly's "Johnny B. Goode", and perhap, with a bit of imagination, explain the giant leap of jazz in the late 1950's, or so the funny analogue goes...
Indeed, the '50's doo-wap feel of the tune does, for a moment, pass for the the tune "Blue Moon", but quickly deviates in a surprising turn. The bridge modulates and soars in musical scope, and the listener is quickly reminded that this is in fact jazz music in all its glory.
Al McLean has had a comedic fascination with pop culture melodies, fans in Montreal delight in oddball quotes that he sprinkles into his solos, from television jingles, to '80's techno pop, and talkshow themes, McLean has ingested the sounds and melodies of his youth, naturally reproducing them. It could be missed in fact, as he blends the fragments so seamlessly, that they function as integral motives in his solos. You have to be on your toes, but invariably during a McLean show, there are smiles and giggles on the faces of those who are really listening.
McLean is playing into a historically significant microphone; a 1931 RCA PB-31. This example is one of 50 made for the Radio City Music Hall in New York. The PB-31 is considered the prototype of the iconic 44 series of microphones, and was RCA's first ribbon microphone. Each of the surviving dozen or so are hand made, and sound fantastic.

I…. Practise ceaselessly: there is one art: wind in the open spaces grieving, laughing with us, saying improvise -Jan Zwicky
This is a quilt of breath and body, air and touch. It is trust, closed eyes, smiles, silence and friendship. The music both abides and reveals. Practitioners of imagination and justice share a love of curiosity. The songs stitch together so many voices. Wisdom emerges alongside paradox and uncertainty and risk.
So many encounters: mobile and studio recordings in Toronto, Hamilton and Ottawa; gigs at Ottawa’s Bar Robo, One Up Room, Options Jazz Lounge, and Toronto’s Emmet Ray; meditative musical gatherings in church sanctuaries (Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Smiths Falls, Brockville); poetic experiments and reflections amongst so many friends. All those moments set the stage for a two-day gathering filled with music and conversation and poetry. All of this was then documented in film and audio recordings at Ottawa’s historic MacKay Church.
Randy Cole (filmmaker and audio-recordist) discerned themes and heard resonances as the days unfolded. Ten short meditative films emerged quickly and clearly around curiosity, spirituality and wisdom. The films tell passionate stories of life and artistry revealed in sounds and images created in a sacred space.
The Curiosity Sessions: Live at MacKay affirms curiosity’s place at the heart of spirituality. It also highlights it as a key ingredient in the practice of communal care and art and ministry. ‘Curiosity’, plus ‘compassion’ and ‘community’, where the words placed before everyone (musicians and speakers) involved in the Sessions. Thoughtful riffs and rhythms emerged quickly amongst the musicians; ideas flowed in interviews. Old songs were re-framed, new poetry, fresh energy, bigger choruses. Resonance. Improvisation. It all remained grounded in the specific realities of faith communities in Canada, but something more expansive also broke through. Wonder and surprise… so many beautiful surprises. “Did that just happen?”, we’d ask each other. “Did you hear that?”, we’d say again and again. “How did we actually get here?”Roddy Ellias Free Spirit Ensemble featuring Kellylee Evans - PrayerRandy Cole2022-05-05 | Roddy Ellias Free Spirit Ensemble featuring Kellylee Evans

I took the time to make a little demo video of it following a piano & saxophone session at Piano Esmonde White in Montreal. Although I'm a bit rusty, I think the gorgeous voice of the guitar comes through.
Finish is original, and may be described in Very Good condition, with some normal signs of age such as pick marks, dings and wear. There is only one stabilized crack, located along the treble side of the fingerboard, on the top, that continues to the edge of the sound hole. This was there for decades, and is stable.
After I acquired it, the instrument was brought for neck re-set by an expert luthier, who properly reshaped the dovetail joint and dry fit at full string tension, prior to final assembly with hot hide glue. Fingerboard has been dressed and re-fretted, and the result is a truly amazing instrument. The guitar has an unbelievable power and resonance, and plays beautifully up and down the neck, with an even, throaty volume in all registers, and no buzzing. Truly a masterful instrument. The original tuners have a bit of play in them, but I've been able to make-do with them just fine.Marianne Trudel & John Hollenbeck - Dédé Java Espiritu (Short Clip)Randy Cole2020-03-05 | Marianne Trudel & John Hollenbeck - Dédé Java Espiritu (Short Clip)

John Hollenbeck is a composer of music uncategorizable beyond the fact of being always identifiably his. A conceptualist able to translate the traditions of jazz and new music into a fresh, eclectic, forward-looking language of his own invention, intellectually rewarding yet ever accessibly vibrant. A drummer and percussionist possessed of a playful versatility and a virtuosic wit. Most of all, a musical thinker – whether putting pen to paper or conjuring spontaneous sound – allergic to repetition, forever seeking to surprise himself and his audiences.

Ordinary Heroes: Noted Canadian music writer Peter Hum shares his talent as a pianist on this new album of 10 original jazz compositions. Here, Hum combines his love of music with powerful social commentary, building tunes around the themes of justice, truth and activism, and sparking the imaginations of listeners. Rendered by an all-star band, these pieces are meant to inspire through a parallel language, and they access a different pathway to our conscience, to sound a rallying cry. All in all, Ordinary Heroes is a refreshing and seldom heard mode of activism... and great music in its own right.

"MachiNations", Yannick Rieu's latest album proves beyond any doubt that he no longer belongs solely to the "jazz" niche. He here reaffirms his openness towards other genres. This new album stands out for the multiplicity of its musical influences, without being a mere patchwork. The various musical forays and inspirations are well assimilated, and delivered with much maturity. As a whole, "MachiNations" bears the signature of an artist, always in pursuit of originality and balance.
On this new album, Yannick Rieu surrounds himself with four of the most talented musicians of their generation: Samuel Joly, drums and percussion (Kevin Warren on tours); Rémi-Jean Leblanc, double bass and electric bass ; Jérôme Beaulieu, keyboards and piano; François Jalbert, guitar. In addition to these musicians, Alexandre Lapointe, Érika Angel and François Lafontaine join the group on an intermittent basis.Jazz, Period. Written by little known guitarist Fred Lacey in 1958, the piece pays homage to saxophonist Ernie Henry (Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Dizzy Gillespie), who died of a heroin overdose on December 29, 1957. The obscure piece found its way onto the Coltrane record, "Soultrane" in early 1958, ensuring its survival.
Al McLean is playing into a rare post-war West German tube microphone, a MWL Maihak BV-30a (Circa 1947), which was the only post-war West German bottle microphone made. Although the mic looks like a classic prewar Neumann bottle mic, its innards are more akin to a Neumann M49, making it a prototype of the iconic Neumann. This example was restored by Leo Schaal of Schaal Audio.

Joined on stage by New Zealand trumpet phenom Lex French, the band let loose on Bob Berg's "Neptune".
The rhythm section includes McLean's regular drummer and bassist Jim Doxas and Adrian Vedady, and the charismatic Taurey Butler joined the band for his first Jazz, Period. recording.
As usual for a Jazz, Period. film, some interesting vintage pieces have found their way into the proceedings; Lex French is playing into an RCA 44-BX ribbon microphone, circa 1945, and Al McLean is being picked up by an incredibly rare 1932 Neumann CMV-3A condenser microphone. The Neumann has been meticulously restored by the German equipment designer Leo Schaal, and has a wonderful and unique sound.

Versions of the romantic sea-shanty are told and retold in the coastal village of Gibara, and the mystery is unveiled in this film. The young Adolfo is lost at sea, his lover Ignacia grieves. Adolfo finds his way to Ignacia's door, but the shock of seeing him is too much for the grieving woman, and she falls dead. Adolfo cuts a lock of hair from his true love's head, and crafts a tableau... a tableau depicting her burial site. Set to the casual performances of local musicians, we journey from seaside to tombstone, and en route we begin to perceive the romantic heart of Gibara.Jean-Michel Pilc - Improv Workshop ProjectRandy Cole2018-12-18 | This unique project is based at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University in Montreal, and explores the practice of paperless musical improvisation. Unlike other forms of improvised music, players in the Improv Workshop Project do not rely on written music or pre-determined harmonic structures or song forms, but rather, they quite literally compose on the spot. Featuring an ever-changing group of musicians of all musical backgrounds, the project puts a focus on the exploration of the tradition of jazz as “improvised chamber music” based on collective improvisation. Weekly playing sessions assemble different casts of musicians to try new ideas and techniques brought by project lead Jean-Michel Pilc and other participants.
Pianist Prof. Jean-Michel Pilc is the de-facto organizer of the ensemble, but in practice, it is rigorously egalitarian, with a deliberate lack of hierarchy amongst members; some of whom are in the midst of music study, and others are acclaimed veterans like Pilc, trumpeter Kevin Dean, and saxophonists Remi Bolduc and Christine Jensen. Luckily for the Montreal jazz scene, this project expands an already rich culture of improvised music, adding an essential incubator for creativity.

This clip features Deschamps in CBC Radio Canada's Studio 12 in Montreal, a soon to be dismantled Mecca of Quebec recording. Deschamps was nominated ''Révélation Radio-Canada Jazz'' for the year 2017-2018, and this session was the last, and perhaps most memorable of the many subventions Benjamin received from the CBC.
Joined by saxophonist Frank Lozano, drummer Louis-Vincent Hamel, and bassist Sébastien Pellerin, Deschamps explores 'non-standard' ways of playing standards. By reordering the expected structure of a piece, and applying other inventive 'code-breaking' treatments, the group effectively morphs the more traditional American Song Standard into contemporary, angular pieces that bear little resemblance to their traditional origin.
The band though, still gets to revel in their jazz roots, playing off of the well-worn chord progressions of the source material, and making a new musical commentary on the old jazz tropes.
Clearly one of the new guard of Canadian jazz, Deschamps stands toe to toe with the greatest of his Montreal peers. From leading an A-list big band, to teaching at a local music college, to his work as a small group leader, it doesn't get any better than this.Benjamin Deschamps - No Codes 3Randy Cole2018-08-29 | Third act of a three part documentary I made of of saxophonist Benjamin Deschamps' project, "No Codes".

The singer pays a unique homage the the original Slavic source material of the Broadway show tune (Kismet, 1953). Instead of the piece's original Russian (Alexander Borodin's Prince Igor, 1890), Stamen has delicately translated the English lyric to her native Bulgarian, giving us a remarkable and compelling version. The modern American lyric is distinctly more romantic than the original, and it is sung now in a language seldom heard by fans of the American Popular Songbook.
Lana Stamen is accompanied by the talented young jazz pianist, Gentiane Michaud-Gagnon, recent recipient of CBC Radio Canada's "Révélation Radio-Canada en jazz" award 2018/19.

In this instalment of Jazz, Period., we are privy to a chamber performance by Montreal musicians Lex French (cornet), and Gentiane Michaud-Gagnon (piano). The duo are performing in a quiet daytime setting at La Sala Rosa, a popular Montreal dance hall.
The tune is "Wrap your Troubles in Dreams", and suitably, French is playing an older instrument. The rare John Heald cornet dates to approximately 1910, and has the perfect, period sound for this traditional tune.
Michaud-Gagnon is the recent recipient of CBC Radio Canada's "Révélation Radio-Canada en jazz" award 2018/19. She is the perfect foil for French's traditional romp, with a ever-present contemporary flare to her seemingly traditional stride-piano accompaniment.
French is being recorded by a rare RCA 44-BX "Tuxedo" microphone, dating to approximately 1939, and we get the full nuance of his cornet performance.

Composed by François Bourassa
Quebec pianist François Bourassa discusses the implicit freedom found in jazz music, and how his longstanding ensemble best expresses his work.
A noted composer, improviser and pianist, Bourassa stretches the boundaries of jazz in an original oeuvre that is both free, and highly detailed in its conception.
Bourassa is widely regarded as a principal mentor in the Montreal music community, inspiring countless musicians with his rich blend of European classical harmony and an imaginative approach to the piano. He perhaps best embodies the Francophone jazz scene in Quebec.

Al McLean & Lex French - My IdealRandy Cole2018-06-19 | A beautiful ballad from trumpeter Lex French. Based in Montreal, French has been game to play on some early cornets and trumpets in a number of Jazz, Period. films. Here he is playing on a 1947 Holton 25 cornet. The instrument has a gorgeous, mellow voice, somewhat like a flugelhorn, and French makes great use of it on this Sinatra ballad, "My Ideal".
French is joined on stage at Diese Onze Jazz Club by Al McLean, Al Bourgeois and Jonathan Chapman. Both Lex French and Al McLean are being recorded by rare vintage Japanese ribbon microphones: McLean by a Toshiba Type A, and French by a Toshiba Type B from the NHK Japanese Broadcasting Company.
