- “Even though I wonder how was the story from her perspective, sometimes there’s peace in not knowing. The sense of mystery is far more comforting than a potential bitter truth ready to backfire on one’s curiosity.”

Music Notes:

- The drum/rhythm section of “Nightfall in November” consists of a combination of two different drum machines: the Roland R-8 MKII, responsible for all the Latin percussions and cymbals throughout the music, and the IK Multimedia UNO Drum. The latter is mostly an “EDM-esque” instrument, but its deep dancefloor kick brings a really Lounge-ish Electro-Bossa vibe to the track.

- Like my most recent music releases, “Nightfall in November” is made completely with hardware/real musical instruments and some hardware effects processors. One notable effect unit that colorizes the sound signature of this music is the Elektron Analog Heat which brings thickness, depth, and warmth to many of the instruments and sounds used on this track.

Drum Machine yang diproduksi pada tahun 1986 ini merupakan salah satu drum machine dengan ukuran terbesar dan dikenal memiliki karakteristik suara yang sangat khas, saking khas-nya gue sendiri punya love & hate relationship dengan alat satu ini. "One year has passed since the day we first met, yet the Afterimage of Her still lingers, reminiscing, recalling that fateful encounter as if that day was still yesterday, in front of that building with all the stories we had in such a short period of time as the calm afternoon was Fleeting Away and nightfall was imminent."

Music Notes:

- One of the most notable pieces of equipment used for "Afterimage of Her" aside from the instruments is perhaps an extremely rare Effect Processor, which is the Ibanez UE-700 multi-effect unit. The UE-700 is used on almost all electric guitar lines on this music as well as some other instruments to give them a very characterful vintage and warm sound.

Music Backstory:

- "Fleeting Away" is a music that was born from the second episode of my “No VST Challenge Series”, a challenge where I try to create a piece of music without using a virtual instrument and only with hardware and real instruments. Each episode has a different equipment/musical instrument lineup that is randomly chosen. The original music from the challenge was less than two minutes. Since I really like the vibe of it, I decided to develop it and turn it into full-length music by adding a second half/section with the same five instruments that were chosen in the challenge.

- As for the “other story” of this music, the title “Fleeting Away” is about how I’m kinda letting go of things from the past, memories of a certain someone that I met a year ago on the same month this music was released (October).

Music Notes:
- One interesting musical instrument used for this music is called the “Suara Ombak” which is a traditional musical instrument that’s kinda similar to a shaker and is supposed to replicate the sound of crashing beach waves.

Polarized | Relaxing Chillout Music (Melodic Chillout)

Gerry Moningkey Chillout Music 2024-08-02 | POLARIZED: A music that was inspired by a sunset photograph; This summery melodic Chillout will take you into a smooth but not so static musical journey where breezy modern Electric Piano drives the rhythm along with soft and subtle ambience and harmonies played with an iconic synthesizer from the early 2000s. Slick ambient guitar lines color the soundscape with enjoyable yet quite relax-able melodies. And in the middle of the music, a dedicated acoustic section came in to break all the electronic commotions where a warm nylon acoustic guitar and intimate piano solo joins the fray in this coastline-esque sonical bliss.

Music Backstory: "Polarized" was inspired by a photograph that I took with my new camera (Canon EOS R-50) in the coastline of Manado, where the afternoon breeze was soothing and the ocean waves were smooth as silk. During the photo session, I was testing out a physical cam filter which is called “Circular Polarizer” filter, which is a type of filter that is commonly used by landscape photographer to control the reflections of a light source (especially the sun), to darken the skies and enhance the blue color of it, also to add more saturation in the photograph. The result is the photograph that I used for this music's thumbnail and music cover as well as the first sunset video recording (the second sunset video recording also uses the same camera & lens and filters but on a different date and location.)

Music Notes:

- This music was almost 100% made with only hardware & actual musical instruments instead of virtual instruments like in the previous track “Graduality”. Almost every sound source you are hearing from “Polarized” is either from guitars/electric piano/synthesizers that are played and recorded with live performance or drum machines and SFXs sampled from sound modules.

- One of the instruments that was hardest for me to play and record for this music is the Oberheim Viscount Minigrand piano module connected to a Yamaha Reface CP, you can hear it playing the melody in the “acoustic section” at 1:46 mark. Even though It’s not a complicated melody, but I’m not a great piano player and the challenge was capturing the “intimate” vibe with the desired dynamic and feel from the piano module (it’s one of the best piano modules IMHO).

Music Backstory: “Graduality” is about how we gotta keep on progressing in life, no matter how small of a progress it is, it’s better than just being stuck at point zero, trying absolutely nothing. “Life isn’t about standing still, it’s about moving forward, falling down to the ground, and rising back up stronger than before.”

Music Notes:
- Unlike my previous two releases, “Graduality” is comprised of mostly virtual instruments although there are few real instruments acting as central components here such as the ambient electric guitar, the sustaining bass synth at the second half of the track, and the melodic rhodes.

Music Backstory: "Seascape of Springtime" is a music about imagining what the tropical seas in my country (Indonesia) were to look like if Spring Season occurs here. This music was born when I was playing with my piano module and using it with a vintage reverb (multi-effect) unit from the late 1980s, which is the Yamaha FX-500. This effect unit is famous in the Shoegaze genre, made popular by Slowdive, specifically one of the FX-500’s presets which is “Soft Focus”. This preset can transform any “basic” sounding instrument sounds into ethereal atmospheric pad-like sounds that can be heard all the way throughout this music.

Music Notes:

- Almost every sounds and instruments heard on this music are from real hardwares and musical instruments, with the exception of the Marimba (starts at 00:24 mark) which is from a virtual instrument.

- The Drum Machine that does the drum part starting from the Climax section (00:52 mark) is from the Roland R-8 Mark II Drum Machine, however it is played live manually with an off-the-grid, imperfect timing, adding to this music a more organic rhythmic feel compared to programmed MIDI parts or pre-programmed rhythm presets on a drum machine.

- This music was originally planned to have ocean waves recording that I recorded from Manado coast as its ambience from start to finish, but upon closer examination, this music instead has more “intimate” vibe without distracting sea wave sounds throughout, so I just cut the ambience clip for a brief moment that plays just before the guitar Climax section.

Music Backstory: The conception of this track started as I was fiddling around with my acoustic guitar, practicing new chord progressions. An interesting one came out and I quickly grabbed my Zoom H1N audio recorder to record what will eventually be the core of this music (the nylon acoustic guitar chords that start from the beginning). I was looking forward to create a Chillout Lounge that is modern and has that “cozy with a bit of urban touch” feel. The music then develops a bit unexpectedly, gaining more variance such as the addition of an ambient section with a “floating feel” that bridges the first half and the second half of the track. The second Climax transforms the track from a laid-back Chillout Lounge into a Chill Trap.

Notes:

- Chill Mode On has similar concept to the first track I released last year (2022), which is Solitude. But this one has way better execution and captures the exact vibe I was looking for.

- Interesting to note that I didn’t use samples and loops for the trap drums like most people would do. The drums are sound-designed from three drum machines (R-8, R-8 MK II, MFB-501 Pro), but the main one responsible for the Trap drum sound of this music is the Roland R-8 Mark II. The non-Trap, soft Chillout drums mostly on the first half of the track is from my MFB-501 Pro analog drum machine.
