SourceRectAtTime() Expression- Adobe After Effects tutorial
updated
Time to turn those materials, lights, animations and polygons into pixels. This final video of our Cinema 4d Lite series is all about rendering. I cover the settings and systems critical to getting the best images out of c4d lite, and a few extra. Oddly enough we have to take our file back to where it all began in After Effects, using the render engine inside Ae to finish the process. This means getting comfortable with the cineware effect and the many functions it brings to the project.

Lights, Cameras and Materials control so much of the final look of your scenes. These critical systems will help us dial in the "look" we're after. I'll show you the basics of materials, and we'll create common forms for plastic, metal, and glass. Then we look at cameras or look through cameras, to create abstract and realistic angles. Finally, it's on to lights, their many forms, and how to tweak them just how you want. I hope this helps you get scenes looking how you want in cinema 4d lite.

Animating in Cinema 4d Lite is easier than it seems at first. I first cover basic keyframe concepts in the app, before moving on to shaping and modifying those keys to get things exactly how we want them. Then we explore animating groups and systems using fields and effectors in the MoGraph fracture object. Finally, we look at alternative methods that generate motion without keyframes. I hope this gets you started with making this move exactly how you want in cinema 4d lite.

Create depth, or the illusion of depth, with Layer Maps. Layer Maps are an incredible feature once we understand how they work. This basic introduction to the concept will look at 3 applications of maps to create depth. The specific systems may be slightly different, but the core concept is the same: 2d image data will tell pixels, particles, and vertices, where to move and by how much. Layer Maps are a powerful and fundamental tool, so I hope this helps get you started using them!

We're making random shapes in After Effects! Who has to time to make or animate all the shapes all the time! Make the computer do it. That's what it's here for! If you want to make one path, and get variations of that path, we can do it! If you want to pick from a series of shapes randomly, we got that too! If you want a path to pick from a list of paths, we can do it all! *warning* we will be talking about expressions in after effects.

Media Replacement has arrived in Motion Graphics Templates. This new feature (as of 2021) has opened a new world of possibilities in not only templates but all after effects projects. If you have not used this feature before, I hope this introduction to the concept can get you started.
Imagine that most layers can now be dynamically changed without needing new compositions. Clients can swap out a logo, certainly. Or change footage in a motion montage. That's cool too. But because any layer can be swapped out, that means that any source or base for effects can also be changed, so the possibilities for procedural graphics just got a whole lot more modular.

Make any footage into a grid of emoji. Using after effects, we can convert any layer (video, animation, photo, text) into emoji. Or any image really. These procedural methods will open up new ways of thinking about effects and procedural graphics in after effects. Using a simple conversion and simplification of footage, organization of elements, and a little clever use of utility effect, you'll be making procedural grids of emoji in no time!

Animating gradients smoothly in After Effects can be hard. If you're working with files from illustrator, even with complex gradients, I'll show you how to break them down in after effects and modify them procedurally. This kind of control will let you seamlessly blend in and out of branded lockups, and create some wildly creative effects. Some might even say psychedelic or trippy. I hope this opens up new ideas and areas for your creativity!

And you can use the mesh to generate a point cloud for even more compositing power. Your VFX compositing workflow is about to change with the power of the mesh!!!

We are looking at the first looping animations ever created. The phenakistiscope (aka phénakisticope, aka phenakistOscope, aka Fantascope) was an optical illusion toy that laid the groundwork for animation. And while we don't stare into the mirror at spinning disks anymore (or do we?) we still see some truly excellent examples of this technology in sculpture, record pressing, and video art. In this video, we'll talk about a process to make these easily with a little help from After Effects.

Today it's all Tangent Town all the way down. I've talked about needing alpha graphics for our trips into tangent town, and now we'll make them on the stream! How meta is this! Well explore some ideas, push some pixels, probably not finish the project. It's a classic stream really, so let's go with the flow to tangent town.

Today we answer the call for the Behance Challenge! Our prompt this week is RGB. What could this mysterious 3 letter code mean? Sounds to me like an excuse to try blending up some multi-coloured gradients out here in some really great backgrounds?

Today we are cracking open c4d Lite (sorry in advance) and trying to twist up some geometry. One limitation to the vanilla, in After Effects 3d extrudes is they do not deform... maybe at all? But in c4d lite, we have access to real geometry and real deformations. So, we'll be playing with those today and trying to make some overlay graphics with a twist. The twist is... a twist deformer.

Last week we talked about one effect for 2 hours. Let's do that again. By popular demand, we're talking about CC Mr. Mercury. This esoteric effect gets some love from time to time but is mostly a mystery. Who is Mr. Mercury? Where did he come from? Why is he here? What DOES HE WANT!!!

When you start motion design pieces, sometimes the audio has to come first. Lyric videos, explainer videos, even abstract pieces all can be driven by audio. When that sound cannot be changed or chopped or mixed around, how do we begin our motion design pieces? In this video, we'll look at some pre-production steps, as well as some more granular advice. Hopefully, we can get your audio-driven projects started right with these workflow tips.

What even is CC Sphere? This old throwback to a time before real 3d inside Ae. Buried deep in the Perspective folder of the effects. Waiting for you to need to animate the earth, or an eye, or a basketball... or something else that's really only a sphere. I was tweeting with someone this week about it a lot so I thought this could be a good time to dive in and see what this can even do.

Last week I had a few people asking me about shape layer animations. Specifically, lots of questions about positive and negative space interactions, shape becoming other shapes, lots of conceptual hurdles like that. So today I'm going to mess around and do some shape-changing and morphing. Let's see what we make?

This morning we are taking on the Behance Live Challenge for this week. The good people Behance.net have asked that we make something celebrating our favourite food. But, ever the contrarian, my favourite food is actually many foods! Today we're celebrating the infinite varieties in infinite combinations found in sushi! And to mix it up we'll be making a jumbling pattern, or at least trying to.

Today we're having a chill hangout in the polar region. I'm not totally sure where we are going this morning, but I'm sure we won't freeze before we get there. Today we are seeing what can be done with the Polar Coordinates effect, and whatever tangents that takes us on. Come along for the journey, won't you?

Use a couple of expressions to select and highlight layers based on a slider control. We are going to talk a lot about expressions so hold on. We take it slow and examine every part of the expression to break it down so your expressions don't break when you write them.
Here is a simplified version of the expression you may want to modify to make work for you. ***youtube DOES NOT allow great than or less than symbols so you'll need to change that in the calculations***:
// variables //
var select = thisComp.layer("Null 1").effect("Select")("Slider");
var padding = thisComp.layer("Null 1").effect("padding")("Slider");
var id = thisLayer.index;
//calculations//
if (select [GREATER THAN] id) {x=ease(select,id,id+padding,360,value);}
else
{x=ease(select,id-padding,id,value,360);}
//outputs//
[x,x]

360-degree image sequences are an amazing resource for your motion design pieces. Objects captured in horizontal slices around an image are very versatile and useful assets. Learn how to create spinning hero elements, diverse sprites, and contemporary grids or patterns. We make use of some expressions to have fine control over which slice of the image sequence we're seeing, and play with some particle systems. It's a real refreshing blending of technique in this one.
here is the expression used in the tutorials:
var a = thisLayer.effect("Angle Control")("Angle")%360;
var n = linear(a,0,360,0,16);
n

In this tutorial, we are popping on a photo collage. This is perfect for backgrounds, logo stings, bumpers, all kinds of branded and artistic elements. We start with creating assets and photos, using a few tips for quickly isolating images, then we assemble chunks of the animation, and finally talk about strategies for assembling those chunks into the whole animation.
