A super big thanks to David Linderman, Jeremy Fielding, Trent, and David Woodall (the welder).I realize most people who support Smarter Every Day don't do it for "transactional" reasons, (ie, I'll support Smarter Every Day to get stuff). I also realized that there is often a mental hurdle that must be crossed before support on Patreon starts. My thought is that I'd really like to give folks a baseball, and it might provide enough momentum to get over that initial hurdle. I signed the first shipment of baseballs I received, but I only have so many of those. There's no implication that my signature is worth anything.... it's just kind of what you do with baseballs... it's a tradition. After a certain number, it will transition to unsigned baseballs. I've got enough signed baseballs to over all existing Patrons, and many more, but I will wait a month or so to see how many I need to get, then I'll order the second batch. I like to support jobs and pay people for what they're good at and hopefully this will enable more of this. The machinists and welders who made the parts in this video for example. We fixed one of the vortex cannon in a stationary position, and used a multi-axis microscope stage to align a second cannon to it… which sounds incredibly easy, until you realize that DYE density was an experiment all on its own.If the density of the dye mix was light than water, the vortex would go up.If the dye was more dense than water the vortex would fall.We had to overcome SO MANY VARIABLES to overcome and we basically spent about 4 hours figuring each variable.Water/dye temperature differentialWater turbulence Water turbidity (cloudiness or haziness of a fluid)How to reset the aquariumCannon SpacingCannon NozzleCannon ShapeDye homogeneity in the vortex itselfThe piston displacement volumeThe piston stroke speedRubber diaphragm tension, would make one side fire faster than the other.Water or air to drive diaphram?Firing speed (too slow and they drift, too fast and turbulence tears apart secondaries)We did a complete redesign of the cannon 3 different times.The Dye loading method was changed several timesAt times We tried to maintain negative pressure on the cannon chamber… we also tried to put shutters on the front of the muzzle. Planting To Fail (My row of corn dirt problem) Smarter Every Day 2 2018-06-09 | I like to try things that are a little bit beyond my ability. I've talked to many old timers about how to plant corn, but none of them told me not to till when it the ground was a bit wet. This results in small clumps of mud that turn into little sun baked bricks. I decided to try to break them up over several weeks with limited success. I've planted anyways and we will see what happens. Either way I learned a valuable lesson that I will never forget as long as I'm able to plant seeds.
