PBS NewsHourPresident Donald Trump told reporters on the White House Lawn on June 18 that Patrick Shanahan is a "terrific person" and said his withdrawal from consideration to be the secretary of defense was "very unfortunate." Trump announced in a tweet earlier in the day that Shanahan would not seek Senate approval so that he could "devote more time to his family," and would be stepping down as acting defense secretary. Media reports that surfaced Tuesday detailed domestic violence incidents involving Shanahan's family. Trump also answered reporters' questions about immigration raids he said would be taking place next week, as well as his decision to send 1,000 more troops to the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran.
