Lane-splitting in Tokyo. censport 2018-05-12 | Coming back to Tokyo from Shizuoka, traffic was light all the way until just before I got to Shinjuku. So for the last 9 kilometers or so, I had to split through this traffic jam. Not really exciting stuff, except for the car/bike spotting. (My commentary is especially boring.) Sure was nice having the option to split, instead of being stuck sitting in the Tokyo sun in all of my gear.

1986 Honda Today part 1 - The pickup. censport 2024-05-31 | This is when my friend Adrián and I took delivery of a car I wanted for a long time, a 1986 Honda Today. This car and I have a history together. It was imported by the museum I work for in 2017 and I drove it to many car shows and import meets. The last time the museum had it on display was in the 軽自動車 exhibit in 2023. After that it was sold to a disreputable flipper, who in turn sold it to a kid who didn't know what he was buying. That kid took it on a road trip and blew the head gasket somewhere on I-65. He also hit a pole with the passenger front corner. When I saw the car on FB marketplace, I nearly cried. Now I've bought it with the intention of resurrecting the little car and taking it to shows again.

Lets walk around The Hermitage, Tay Forest Park, Scotland. censport 2023-05-29 | Part of my 2023 holiday in Scotland. Was driving up the A9 out of Edinburgh and saw a sign for The Hermitage. Being a Nashville native that got my attention, as that's also the name of an historic residence there. What I found here though was a lovely forest with a very nice waterfall and the tallest trees in Britain. Enjoy!
Quick review of my hire (rental) car in Scotland, a Toyota AygoX. censport 2023-05-17 | Amateurish (finger over the lens and everything) review of my rental car, something we don't get in the U.S. market, sadly. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this car handles. In fact, I hope there isn't G-meter on this thing that the rental company can scan later to see how many lateral G's the car was pushed through on Scotland's twisty roads. As the saying goes, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. Speaking of Scotland's roads, no wonder Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, and Dario Franchitti were so good. I haven't had this much fun in ages.

It was another bad traffic day in Nashville, I think I-40 was shut down, so I rode my smallest, slowest motorcycle to work. Instead of "waiting my turn" and risk getting rear-ended by somebody who was texting their boss/coworkers that they were going to be late, I decided to do what I learned in Japan: Lane-split. As you can see, when practiced responsibly it cuts down on traffic backups, accidents, and time/fuel wasted. So let's get this legislation passed and get more people riding to work instead of sitting in traffic. But when I stumbled upon on this, I realized this little 59-second clip is the only in-car video of my driving that exists. Twenty years of autocrossing, SCCA road racing, PCA club racing, SVRA, track days... and this is all there is. And since I retired from it all in 2008, this is all there ever will be.Damn.
Driving a Honda S660 in Tennessee censport 2018-12-09 | After a year of sitting on the museum's exhibit floor, teasing me, I finally got the S660 out on a bit of twisty road on a rare day off. The weather was supposed to be 64F and sunny, but this is middle Tennessee, and it's January on top of that. Still, take the top off, put it in sport mode, and crank up the iPod through the stereo and it's all good.I hadn't been on this road in a few years, so I took it really easy and enjoyed a relaxing-yet-still-brisk pace. Even though I didn't push the car hard, I was really impressed with its handling, grip, and responsiveness. Another 30-40hp and this thing would be a crazy blast. It's great fun just like it is, though.The audio is weird because YouTube originally blocked this video in the U.S. due to the song playing through the car's radio (from my iPod). And no, my videos are not "monetized". Instead of trying another video host or deleting the audio altogether, I gave YouTube's song removal software a try. It's in beta form, so it's not perfect. Emmas Flowers delivery driver 12-04-17 censport 2017-12-06 | Delivery driver for Emma's Flowers changes lanes while turning through the intersection, doesn't use any turn signals, takes several seconds to find the vehicle beeping at him (me), then looks confused as he probably doesn't understand what he did wrong. If you work for Emma's Florist, please make sure your delivery drivers know Tennessee traffic laws, and how to get where they are going BEFORE they get on the road. When you are turning from two lanes to two lanes, vehicles in each lane STAY IN THEIR LANES. It is a state law (probably law in all 50), for a good reason - to prevent accidents like the one your delivery driver almost caused.
Gyro-X driving on to Lane Motor Museum exhibit floor. censport 2017-09-24 | The 1967 Gyro-X is a two-wheel car that balances thanks to a gyroscope situated between the front wheel and the driver. Designed by Alex Tremulis and engineered by Thomas Summers, it was the subject of an intense six-year restoration, which included re-fabricating the entire rear section of the car, the rear suspension and drive system, the gyroscope, etc. Here, the car is being driven back on to the exhibit floor of the Lane Motor Museum by the employee who restored this amazing car, Michael Hüby.

This guy jumped through a hole in traffic too fast, had to slam on the brakes, then entered the on ramp too shallow and with a way too early apex. I'm in my tired old truck and still easily demonstrated the proper approach and line for him. Not that he appreciated my guidance. :D So he took off and continued to contribute to the popular image of BMW drivers.

But considering that this is a very quiet little street, I can see how it made sense for logistics reasons. Entry cue at Import Alliance, 10/26/14 censport 2014-10-31 | On the way to work, I drove by the crowd waiting to get into the ImportAlliance 10th anniversary show at the old dead Bellevue Mall. At 0:55, you'll hear an astute young man in a Civic sedan recognize my car and yell "OH MY GOD! IT'S A RENAULT!" He even pronounced it right, so kudos to him.
