I learned how little value other peoples opinions have. The most important things are the love you have from friends and family but even more important than that is the love you should have for yourself. I am me. I am beautiful in my own way and I don't feel the need to have to follow society and trends about being skinny. Why do I need people who only love me for how I look? It's been a long journey getting here, I really hope that my story can help to warn people that are about to fall into the same trap.'
We chose this story because we want to encourage people to speak up if something similar has happened to them and to seek help if they're still in such a situation. We hope this video will encourage people to feel empathy and compassion for those who have gone through such experiences. And we hope that it will encourage us all to do what we can to prevent these things from happening. Even if it does happen we want to encourage people to speak up for their own safety

It all happened so fast. The moment I realized that all I was wearing was my underwear that I had gone to sleep in, was the same moment one of the pirates fired at the floor and a bullet fragment struck me in my left shin, lodging itself just an inch from the bone.
Pirate: "GET UP NOW!!" 🏴☠️
They marched us outside and onto the deck and then into a speedboat that was waiting for us next to the ship. We were now their hostages - 5 Indian Sailors and 1 Nigerian Captain - and they were taking us deep into the forest to await our fate. They tied us together on a platform the size of a car that was floating on a mangrove swamp and left us there as they celebrated their capture by firing shots in the air for nearly half an hour.

"I hated the fact that I was always the one who had to apologise to Lacey. Lacey is a good person and can be a great friend, but we would be so much closer if Aiden hadn't come between us. And because of this, I know there would always be tension between us. I loved him. In the back of my mind, I've always wanted to get back at her. Hurt her the way she hurt me. I was about to knock on Carter's door, when it opened and I came face-to-chest with Carter chest.
Carter: "Take a picture. It will last longer."
Mercedes: "Um, r-right. Is Lacey home?"
Carter: "Nope. Her pet came and picked her up about ten minutes ago. Just missed them."
My lips spread in a thin line at his word choice. Describing Aiden as a 'pet' was not cool. Not when he was so, so much more than that. "But, you're welcome to come in if you'd like." His eyes swept over me not-so-subtly and I felt my heart rate quicken.
Every girl wanted Carter Williams to notice her. I felt like I was beginning my five seconds of fame.
Mercedes: "You're asking me to come in?"
Carter: "Well, that's what it looks like. Unless you have something better to do, of course."

And with that, he dropped the towel.
Now Lacey would finally get a taste of her own medicine."

It was 1997 and I was at my local Blockbuster returning my VHS movie rental, Apollo 13, when the guy told me that I had a $40 dollar late fee. I didn't want to pay it but I had no choice because I wouldn't be able to rent any other movies until I did and Blockbuster was the only rental store. I asked him to please let this one by since this was my first time but he only said "Sorry, store policy". So I paid for it and embarrassingly rushed out.
The entire ride home, I was annoyed and couldn't get that $40 late fee out of my head. I knew there had to be some other option, but there wasn't! So instead of putting up with their ridiculous fees, I created my own video rental store beating Blockbuster and creating Netflix, my billion dollar industry. But that's not really how Netflix was started; at least, not how the idea came to us.
I was working at my software company, Pure Atria, with a close friend, Marc Randolph, where we would carpool to Silicon Valley together every day when one day we began bouncing ideas off each other. We were looking for our next career move and hungry for something game changing that would revolutionize an industry and fit more with the 21st century. We knew about Amazon's rising popularity and we wanted to make an Amazon-like business that would be internet-based and toyed with dog food, shampoo, and then, renting movies. It was a crazy one but so were we and so was America's obsession for movies.
We sat on the idea and the more we spoke, the more we began getting discouraged almost abandoning it. But in 1997, my company went through a merger with a larger corporation and I sold Pure Atria for $750 million giving me the opportunity to finally try our idea. We began building our site and planning our business model to ship movies to people's homes until we realized we didn't have a cost-effective way to deliver them because, at the time, the only movies you could rent were on VHS which were big and heavy and people went to Blockbuster to pick them up. But then a friend told me about a new of watching movies; DVDs.
We weren't sure how strong or if a DVD would make it in one piece to the customer so we tested the idea ourselves by inserting a DVD movie into an envelope and mailing it to our homes. When we ripped opened the envelope and saw that it made it in one piece and still worked, we knew it had to be done. I invested $2.5 million of my own money into the start-up imagining it to be the next Amazon of movie rentals. In 1998, with everything in place, we launched the world's first online DVD rental store with just under 1,000 titles.
We were going with a single rental service, meaning, pay per movie at $4 each plus a $2 postage fee, unlimited due dates and of course, no late fees. It all seemed flawless but we had no idea if people would even use the online story because all households were still on slow dial-up internet and the majority didn't own DVD players. But, with a few early-adopters, and within a few years of advancing internet connection, we managed to scrape by.
In 1998, Jeff Bezos tried to buy us out and even though we were tempted, we knew if he wanted our company, then we were on to something big. So, we turned him down. A year later, we regretted that decision when our business began falling because the dot-com bubble burst scaring investors from all things tech. We had no choice but to approach our rival, Blockbuster, to propose an offer to buy us out for $50 million. The CEO stared at us dead in the eyes and then laughed straight into our faces saying 'it will never work'. Both of us would remembered that meeting for the rest of our lives.
Building debt and unsure if we'd survive, I went back to our office prepared to tell our team of 30 that there might be no Netflix. When I saw their faces and knew how much they believed in this vision and the trust they put in me, I made the decision that I wasn't going to give up and I wasn't going to stop trying. I made the decision to get rid of our single rental service and moved to a subscription model for one low monthly price. That idea not only saved us but gave us the popularity we needed.

"My body slipped inside the door and crept up the stairs as quietly as I could. I tip-toed through the hall, hardly breathing. I silently went to my room when my heart leapt inside my chest as I jumped about two feet in the air. My T.V was playing and Carter was sprawled out, dead asleep on my bed! I just watched him for a moment, mentally debating if I should wake him up or not... Quietly, I walked over, switched the T.V off, and changed into my pajamas before doing the worst possible thing.
I crawled into bed beside him.
I wish I could say I felt guilty for what I was doing but being back in Carter's embrace felt amazing. His arm securely draped around my waist, with his face nuzzled into the crook of my neck.
I really had missed this. Just being with him. I know how stupid it was of me to have done this. But Carter has always been and would always be my weakness. I moved slightly when Carter whispered:
"stay with me Lacey, I missed you so much"
My heart swelled at his words and soon enough I found myself drifting off to sleep, still deeply wrapped up in Carter."

Rellik is forced to decide between leaving his past or start a new life when he is admitted into an unethical mental hospital for destroying property. We learn about his past and why he is so attached to Mia after losing his only friend, Susie. Is he making things worse or should he open up and allow others to help him? Let us know if you would like an Ep. 4.
Susie: *Rock being thrown. click, click, click* "Rellik!!"
Ahhh. (Opening eyes and staring up at his bedroom ceiling) My ears are bleeding again. It must have been that last slap to the face.
Susie: "Down here loser! Hurry up man, I'm getting soaked!"
Rellik: "Susie? If my dad hears you he's going to beat me for it. I told you, I can't today."
Susie: "Oh come on, we'll be in and out before he even hears a thing! If you don't come down here, I'll yell and wake your dad up! 1! 2!..."
Rellik: "SHHHH. Okay okay, fine. I'm coming."
Susie: "Damn! Your drunk loser dad hit you pretty bad this time. There's some blood running down your ear. Remind me again why you don't just report him and live with your mom?"
Susie: "...Hey, hey Rellik you listening? I said, where's Keepsake?"
Rellik: "What? Oh, ah I completely forgot. I didn't think I would even come tonight, it totally slipped my mind."
Susie: "Whatever, we can fill him in tomorrow. Anyway, I picked the lock open, come in before someone sees."
Rellik: "Hey-what? How'd we end up here?"
Susie: "Um...we walked? You told me to break into the medicine cabinet and grab you the pain killers. Are you okay? "
Rellik: "I'm fine. I just had a brain fart. Lets do this. I want to numb everything, all of it; my dad, the bullies at school, everything!"
Susie: "Whoa there. I don't think that's a good idea. At least look at the bottle before you start emptying them like that. Who knows- That's too many!"
Veterinary doctor: "Oh my god what have you done?!? Look at this mess! My files, the tables, my medications, and...where are my animals?!"
Rellik: "Shhh shhh shhh. Please, your voice is splitting my head into two."
Veterinary doctor: "Stay right there I'm calling the police!"
Rellik: "No! Wait, let's work this out. I'm sorry for the mess. I'll clean it right up and I'll pay for the damages just don't call the police."
Veterinary doctor: "Pay for losses?! Son, you guys burned down half the block. I have no choice."
Rellik: "What?! (See's the full damage) Oh damn."
Rellik: "Susie?! You too?! tried to tell them it was all me but they didn't listen."
Susie: "Hey, I'm tough remember!? And besides, I made you come out with me. How's your head?"
Rellik: "It's okay but I'm losing chunks of memory still. I don't even remember when I got here."
Susie: "You haven't been taking the medication have you? You have to stop! I don't know what it is but it's probably causing your memory loss. Whatever they're doing here, it's illegal."
Rellik: "Susie, I don't think that's a good idea. I don't want to make things worse. I mean, we did burn down a building."
Susie: "Look at me! We are not crazy; you are not crazy. St. Elizabeths is not a hospital, it's a research center! Why do you think some people never leave?!"
Rellik: "No. We should just do nothing. If we're quiet they won't even notice us or it'll all just go away."
Susie: "What, just like your dad at home? You need to stand up for yourself and take matters into your own hands or else they'll never stop! Look around! They're keeping us drugged so we can forget everything that's going on here. I'm not going to sit around and wait for something to happen. I'm escaping from here and you're going to help."
Susie: "Every now and then the guard meets up with a nurse and they both go into the storage room for a few hours. I figured that is when we make our escape. All you'll need to do is grab his keys and wait until they're together then unlock the door and come get me. Room 217."
Rellik: "Fine but how am I going to get his keys?"
Susie: "Like this! (Punch to Rellik's face)"
Rellik: "OWW! What the f... why did you....(Punch)"
Susie: "It's your fault I'm here! You son of a b-"
Rellik: "OWWW Get off me! HELP!!"
Somehow I managed to see straight and saw the guard rushing over pulling Susie off me. I saw the keys dangling off his belt loop and I glanced over to Susie being held back by the guards. She started mouthing "Grab it, grab the keys..." And then I unclipped them from his pants and quickly tucked them into my socks and pulled my pant leg down. And then I heard her voice for the last time:
I waited in my room running the plan in my head waiting to hear the sound of 2 doors shutting. One for the person they'd take out of the room and the second when the nurse and guard meet in the storage room.

* Three Years Ago*
"My sides were burning and water was getting into my nose but I didn't care, I needed to beat Carter.
Carter: *teasingly* "You can't beat me, Lace, I'm a professional."
Lace: "You - wish!" I yelled as I dived forward, headfirst into the sand, sliding across my belly.
Carter: "What the - You never win!"
Lace: It's just what I like to call... Skill."
Carter: "You think you're skilled?"
Lace: "Oh, I know I am."
He chuckled and I frowned at him, not appreciating his attitude. But before I even had a chance to respond, his hands pinned me to the sand. His face was mere inches from mine.
Carter: "Skilled, huh?"
Lace: "Ye-s..." I trailed off as he brushed his lips against mine. Although it was only a peck, it felt amazing to me.
Afterwards, we towelled off in silence before I grabbed his hand, and interlaced our fingers as we strolled over to our hut. My relationship with Carter had always been complicated, we basically grew up together because our parents are best friends and we live next door to each other. My parents built a hut for us when we were six and over the years, we expanded it into practically an apartment now. For years, we would always race across the water, in battle. This 'hut' was our Haven, basically. It was the place, where we would go if we wanted to hang out, or were upset, it was our tradition.
There was nothing that I loved more than being here with Carter, I could see us together for the rest of my life.
Lace: "I promise...".
Carter: "That we..." he continued without hesitation, already knowing what I was going to say.
Lace: "Will be..."
carter: "Best friends, forever." Carter wrapped his arms securely around me. Being in his embrace, I believed Carter would never hurt me, but I was completely wrong..."

Random voice: “Someone call 911!! Step back, leave him some room!"
Greg: “Wha-what's happening? Why can’t I speak?"
Random voice: “I can’t stop the bleeding! He’s fading! I’m losing him! Come on buddy, stay with me here, hang in there!” [1.3d
Daughter: "Dadddddd!"
Reaper: “Whoa! Take it easy there Greg. There’s no rush on your first day of being dead.”
Greg: “Dead?! No! I was just...I was...I can’t remember anything.”
Reaper: “It takes time to get back those memories; especially the fresh ones where you’ve just died but don’t worry. You’ll remember them soon enough.”
Greg: “Um, if I’m dead, does that make you... god?”
Reaper: “The god question again. You humans always want to believe in something, don’t you? I guess you can call me a liaison or a messenger. Your Grim Reaper.”
Greg: “The Grim Reaper?!? That means I still have a chance! Take me back, send me back there! You made a mistake, I have unfinished business, YOU HAVE TO SEND ME BACK!”
Reaper: “Whoa whoa whoa. Calm down friend, I wish I could but that’s not in my job description - per se. I’m just the guide. Going back isn’t my decision so hands off the coat!”
Greg: “Not your job description?!?”
Reaper: “Per se”
Greg: “I’m going to YOU! You son of a *Punches the reaper in the face*
Cat: "Meow"
Greg: "Look, I don't have time for this right now! You can't expect me to watch her and get through this week. Please, can't you take her for an extra week?"
Daughter: "Daddy, daddy look I found a bracelet!" (she's standing in the street)
Greg: "Not now Becca. Daddy is speaking to mommy. I'll take her camping as soon as I- *bicyclist almost hits her* BECCA COME HERE!" *Pulls her towards him*
Greg: "God, watch out! You could have hit- ahhh!!!"
Greg: “Ahhhhhh. *breathes heavily for a moment* A car?!?!”
Reaper: “Jeeez *Rubs his face where he was punched*. For a hero, I sure didn’t expect a punch. It felt like a car hit me....haha get it? No? Too soon I guess...Just an observation but it sure didn't seem like you were giving her enough time."
Greg: “Time? Weren't you watching? I would have taken her on a camping trip as soon as I was free."
Reaper: "And when would that have been?"
Greg: "If you're saying I don't love my family, you're wrong. I spend all my time providing for them making sure they have money to make them comfortable and happy."
Reaper: “Money, huh. *throws him a bag full of cash* Here.”
Greg: *Reaches into the bag and pulls some loose cash out. * Well...
Reaper: "What's the matter? Isn't this what you wanted? Money so you can be happy. So they can be happy?"
Greg: *He then stares at his wrist and looks sadly down at his watch tick*
Reaper: “You gave up so much thinking money was the greatest currency for your family but you were wrong. It was your time. You see, most people coming through here are blinded by what they don't have and forget what they do. In the end, it takes death for them to finally figure it out.”
Reaper: "Well, this has been fun. I don’t mean to be rude but I do have a busy day so I need to get a move on.”
Greg: “Wait. Where do I go? Shouldn’t there be a bright light or some underworld? All we’ve done is walk in circles this entire time.”
Reaper: “Hmm you’re right. Let me see how you did. *Shows him that they’ve been walking up and down a weigh scale*
Greg: “A scale?!?! I was being judged this entire time?! We-well did I do bad? Am I a bad person?”
Reaper: “Hahaha. There is no good or bad. There is only what you experience and how you choose to exist. I thought you would have guessed that by now.
Greg: *coughing uncontrollably*
Greg: * takes a loud gasp of air*
Wife: “OMG Greg! Greg are you okay? We were so worried about you! Thank god you’re okay. Don’t move. You’re in the hospital. Your head was swollen and they had to put you in an induced coma.”
Greg: “Lucy? Where’s Lucy?”
Wife: “She’s here. She’s right here. We never left you. We’re here.”
Doctor: “Please rest. You have a long recovery ahead of you.”
I want to know because I don't.
And, what do you do when he tells you that he was trying to protect you, because he wasn't the only person who had their eyes on you?
On one fateful day of the program that I met him. Edgar. He was mid-40s - he'd been in the military - but despite his appearance, had a soft personality. He was a guest speaker, and when he finished, I went up, got acquainted, and we hit it off. Then one night, at the theater, while were backstage, we came up behind me, and began caressing neck, saying "your collar is off". Then, one by one, his hands began to travel down, past my shoulders, my back, and eventually my hips. Instinctively, I tried to inch away but his hand closed. He was now gripping me. He gave me a squeeze before letting go as the audience applauded. One hundred eyes on the stage and none could see what had just happened to me. I packed up my stuff, said I wasn't feeling well, and left then and there.
After a while, I got a new job as a cashier. Edgar showed up and made a beeline toward me. I felt my heart pick up it pace. I felt my mind was race. I wanted to run, but I couldn't. I was just stuck there, a cold sweat running down the back of my neck like his hands once did. By the time he made his way up the line, I could barely breathe. I braced myself but he didn’t say anything to me; just smiled and left. Ever the optimist, I wanted to believe he'd moved on - forgotten. But after that day, he kept coming back. I was ready to quit again when one day, during a late shift, as I was about to clock out, Edgar walked through the door - past the 'closed' sign - toward me and said, "You are being followed." I felt every hair on my body stand up, felt myself gasp for air. I wasn't just paranoid. I was actually being watched. He reached out to my shaking hands and I held on. Despite everything, he was all I had. He offered to escort me to my car. And after a moment, I said "okay."
There were only a few cars in the parking lot that night. Mine was the furthest away, and between me and my car, there was only one other vehicle. A quick look saw that it was empty, so we made a beeline toward my car. Just as I was about to reach my car, I grabbed for my keys when I heard a car door open behind me. I turn around, and it was Edgar, cloth and rope in hand. There was no one else. It was his car. It was always him.
Then, he pulled me into his car.
My hands grabbed at the edges of the door frame. I could feel my heart racing as my mind told me to fight for my life. I could feel one of his arms still tightly around my waist as the other one wandered lower. I was terrified and couldn’t think at all. I used all of the strength I had to pull myself out of his grasp and onto the pavement of the parking lot. My knees hurt when I hit the ground, but there was no time. I jumped to my feet and sprinted towards my car. I shut the door. Locked it. And stepped on the gas. In my rear-view mirror, I could see him, standing there, still watching as I turned the corner, and drove to my parents'.
I didn't tell them what had happened. Not my parents, my workplace, or the police. Edgar had a military background and he probably had connections. I felt too afraid to come forward, so I didn’t. Instead, I ditched my old phone number, old license plate, and applied for a transfer to another store downtown. It was one of my new co-workers, Holly, giving me a hug as I burst into tears. She held my hands in hers and told me that I should never feel like I deserved anything that'd happened; that they no one else could would ever fully understand what I was went or was going through. She would later become my girlfriend. I never saw Edgar again.
Before, I didn’t understand why someone would keep something like that to themselves. Why would they let someone get away with it? But I understand now that there can be many reasons people don’t speak up. Don’t ever let anyone victim shame or blame you. They do not know your story."

My husband and I are no longer together, but we're still trying to get divorced. Now that I look back I realize how uneducated I was in the whole ordeal and wish that I had just left sooner so he could be happy with who he wanted to be. To this day he will still not admit that he likes men - I wish that he did because it is no sin. The sin is in the lies he told me. But, it doesn't matter, because now my son and I are finally safe and happy.

Living on the streets was tough, I had nothing. No food, clothes, love, protection and support. Nothing but bites all over my hands and arms. When I crashed into a group of girls. They wore makeup, with high heels, and long fingernails. I was shaking so much but they were friendly and tried to calm my nerves.
"Hey, are you okay?" one of them said.
"please someone - he-he tried, please"
"Don't worry, we are going to help you, just come with us."
I wished I never said, "yes" You can blame me all you want but I was desperate for a chance to get off the street.
My mind was thinking no harm could come and no one was going to mistreat or judge me. All I had to was dance, make money, and repeat. I was definitely naive but I didn't know any better, and the girls promised me I would get full protection because the boss is very strict with how we would interact with clients. It was my only option because I needed to get off the streets. So I gritted my teeth and tried to get through several months of dancing until one night, my whole life changed forever. A rich man offered me a private room. This was the first time I tried to refuse a dance. But the boss threatened me and said that if I didn't go ahead with it, he'd fire me. So I started dancing when suddenly I completely blacked out.
I woke up in a hospital, with no recollection of the night before but my body ached as if someone had thrown me across the wall. My doctors were supportive and told me everything was going to be ok, but nothing they said could comfort me. I overheard the doctors saying that they found me unconscious and dumped outside of the hospital. It turns out that the strip club owner told the girls to get rid of me to cover his tracks. I was stunned. I felt like as if someone shot me through the chest, I couldn't believe this happened.
But what was worse was the realisation that I was alone again, with no money and nowhere to go. Everyone had turned their backs on me even though none of this was my fault. I was so afraid of going back to the streets and I really didn't want to leave the hospital. So when my mom's sister reached out, I clung onto her. It turns out that she had been looking for me for years but my mum had hidden my whereabouts from her until the police contacted her. She was the first person in my life to actually want me and welcomed me with open arms but after being alone for so long, I found it really hard to trust her intentions. What if she did things to me like my cousin? Or throw me out like my mum?
She offered me counselling and therapy, at first, I thought it was a trick. But when I meet the counsellor, I felt relief. I opened up and told her everything that had happened, she just listened. I wasn't judged or called names and in the end, she suggested a group therapy where there were other young teenagers who had experienced similar things to me, and for the first time, I felt like I wasn't alone after all. Finally, after getting help, there were no more nightmares and now, I have someone who'd never leave my side. It's still tough some days but I'm finally able to be a kid again and just focus on having a future. One where I plan to become a paediatrician!"

I never believed in hypnosis. People losing control of their bodies; losing their memories with the snap of the finger? Didn’t seem plausible. That was… until my mother passed. Suddenly. When it wasn't pounding or spinning, my head would tell me I needed to eat, needed to sleep, needed to get up and move on. Or at least try. But my body wouldn’t budge. It was like a trance. I was stuck...at the fourth stage of grief. All I wanted...was to forget.
Then one day, my friend Katie recommended I see a therapist.
Dr. Bateman.
I was nervous going in. So nervous in fact, I remember blurting out, “It’s my first time,” before quickly adding, “Oh, in therapy, of course”. He let out a laugh and assured me this first session would be a breeze. We’d just get to know each, talk a little about why I’d made a booking, and figure out how we – or really how I - could move forward. And for the first time - in a long time - I didn't feel as lost. I don’t remember too much about what we talked about, but by the time I left his office, I had already booked my next appointment.
But it was after my second visit to Dr. Bateman that I noticed something was off. Inside my car, just outside his office, I noticed that my shirt buttons were done wrong, and everything was wonky.
I call Katie, almost immediately, to tell her about it, how I don't remember what had happened during this second session. But to my horror, she replied, "second session? You've been seeing Bateman weekly, for two months now."
(Pause) "What?"
I couldn't remember anything. I couldn't even remember what his office looked like despite the fact that I had apparently spent hours in there. There was a short pause before Katie finally told me to meet her at the police station.
There, I told the officers that there was no medication, no drinking, no history of mental illness. Katie confirmed all this, and as we looked through my schedule, we not only found that I had visited him 9 times, but there was another appointment: next week.
The officers agreed to look into it. But they needed my help. My word - the word of a mourning daughter with memory loss - just wasn't enough for them to barge into the doctor's life and take him in for questioning. So we devised a plan - a plan where I would be the bait.
And so, the following week, when my appointment with Dr. Bateman finally came around, I remember walking into his building with a hidden microphone under my shirt, and a hidden camera inside my purse. Both were being monitored by the officers who wanted as much as I did to know what really went on inside his office.
I was nervous. Conflicted. But then, he said: "I'm going to make you feel good and make sure you forget"
By then, I was caught in a trance. He kept talking. I could feel his voice; I could feel his touch; I could feel everything but I was paralyzed. All I could was listen to him say: "I'm the only one who can do this to you. Do you understand? You need me to feel good. That's all you need to remember. Everything else, you can forget. You will-" And then before he could finish, I heard the door slam open and the six words that would bring me out of it: "Dr. Bateman, you are under arrest."
He'd been recording the sessions with his patients. All his patients. The officers found more than half a dozen cameras in the room, with recordings uploaded on his computer. It was all the evidence they needed to lock him up for a long time. I don't know if his punishment will ever be enough for all the hurt he's caused, but at least it's a start.
As for me: what exactly he did to me? That's not important. What's important is what I learned when I finally found the right therapist. It took a while to happen; took me a while to trust, but when I did she taught me I don't need to forget because if there's one lesson I could learn is that there's nothing more precious than memories...even if they hurt you."

Our online chats eventually became a daily routine and soon enough we had exchanged all our personal, dirty details. And, it really didn’t bother me that she was 3 years older than me, cause I was nearly 20. She always had a way of sussing out how I felt, making sure if I was upset with something that she was always there for me. She made jokes out of everything and could always put a smile on my face.
We talked on Bik through the end of my junior year and into summer. We had created such a strong bond and grown so close together that we felt comfortable enough to send pictures. Well, she did. She sent me photos of herself in a bra and panties - she didn’t have the perfect body but wow was her confidence attractive. She sent me pictures without any clothes on and very explicit videos. I would always ask myself why she was so comfortable with me, especially since her face was in quite a lot of the videos.
Bik automatically deletes conversations after 24 hours, but we still had the option to save photos and videos. Of course, I never did. I only ever saved screenshots of some of the sweet things she would say to me. But she was never satisfied with me just responding to her images, she wanted me to send photos too... even though I was extremely uncomfortable doing it. She pressured me a lot by saying “you’re beautiful; your body must be too” and I eventually fell for her praises, and decided to send her a photograph.
I put on a blue lace thong and bra, turned the camera to every angle to make sure I didn’t add any extra weight or blubber, and posed away. Once I was satisfied with the photos I clicked send and thought to myself "This isn't a big deal, is it? I mean it's just a bra and underwear pic"
but days went on and she began asking for more.. guilting me into sending her stuff. And if I didn't send it.. it meant I didn't care about her at all. Eventually, this behavior from her made me grow distant.. it made me feel uncomfortable.
One fateful day I didn't respond sooner to her because I was in class. It had only been 12 hours and I had received almost 50 texts from her with the final ones saying "oh you want to ignore me? well, I've exposed you now".
I was MORTIFIED. I couldn't stop panicking at the idea of strangers seeing my private pictures. Suddenly, I got a Facebook notification on my phone from a girl called 'Natalya'.. and she had all these private pictures of me.
Another classmate of mine also messaged me "I found you on a dirty site", I asked him "What's the website called?" "I'm not telling you, why would I ruin it for myself?" he said so smugly.
I couldn’t even respond, I felt so blindsided. My close friends reported the videos and the pictures to Facebook, and many of them inboxed “Natalya” how cruel it was to post my pictures and asked why would she do something like that.
I tried EVERYTHING to clean up the mess. I reported the pics and videos to Facebook, and they did take them down. But then, 30 minutes later, they’d be back up.
I even called the police and told them everything. They said to go to the precinct to file a report. It was so embarrassing to explain and show the pictures and videos –and one of the policemen that came to my house made it even worse.
“I thought there was a crisis,” he said. “There are people out there actually hurt.”
This nightmare is still going on a year later. It’s affected me in different ways – I’ve become more negative about my body and even my facial features. I dislike my skin tone because when I obsess about how this happened I ask myself, Did this person pick on me because I’m black? Or was I just too stupid to notice that she was playing me like a grand piano? She built up my ego, then messed it up.
It’s so frustrating not to know anything. I ask myself about everything – was this her plan before she hit me up on Bik? Who is she and what Natalya's goal? Why is this happening to me? I truly hope one day, that I'll find the solution to this and find my happiness again.

I had finished my classes for the day and had made my way off campus when I noticed a tall figure running up from behind me "hey! you forgot your textbook - I couldn't let a pretty lady such as yourself go home without a study partner" hmf, cheesy already. Kinda cute though I thought. "Um thanks" I said and just as I turned around, I heard him say "what? no number? let me take you out and treat you to a meal, maybe while we study" he said confidently. I chuckled and knew he was full of it but he was so cute - he had this bad boy demeanor and I just really fell for it.
It didn't take long, but after that day, we connected instantly and opened up to each other about our lives, our friends, family, and other random things throughout our days. We'd speak for hours and for days eventually being more than just friends, I remember the day he asked me to his girlfriend he said: "you're mine now babe". He'd always keep me on the edge of my feet, surprising me with gifts, making me feel sexy and special. I didn't care that he was a little edgy, often nudging me with controlling comments and brushing them off as a joke - who cares right? he's just got a lot of character I would say to convince myself.
Things only started to get worse once he felt me pulling away. He began to obsess about the way other guys would look at me, often starting fights with anyone who even glanced my way. One night out when we left the cinemas, he grabbed another guy by the throat and told him he'd beat him for glancing our way. Then, once we'd get home, he'd turn to me. He'd tell me how much of a low life I was, asking for this attention by "walkin' around, showing off by big chest". He would tell me if I didn't start wearing more appropriate clothes that he'd find another girl to replace me.. one that was a 'good girl', the kind of girl you could take home to your parents. I don't know why I thought it was my fault, but he had a way of making me feel guilty for almost anything.
We would take “breaks” where we didn’t speak with each other for weeks until I apologized. It was incredibly difficult because the more we'd fight, and the more he blamed me, the harder I'd try and make things right - it was the opposite of what anyone should do. I liked him so much that I accepted his verbal words, and him yelling at me. It made me apologize more and want to help him, fix his problems, and change who I was to fit the person he wanted. I no longer dressed the way I wanted to, I was too afraid to catch any wrong attention and pay the price for it later.
"Stop it people are looking our way!" I pleaded "I don't care! you should have thought of that before you started taking off your clothes in front of everyone," he shouted. He then grabbed my jacket and forcefully tried zipping it back up "stop!" I kept saying, but he wouldn't listen. He grabbed my arm so tight I could no longer feel anything else but the pain, I panicked at the idea that it might even snap. I shrieked out loud as I could no longer hold the back pain and before we knew it, a crowd of people rushed over to separate us. I saw the look in people's eyes, the pity they felt and the disgust they had with him.. and that's how I knew that I needed to get the hell out of this relationship.
I cut all my ties with him and never spoke to him again after that day. It really took a lot for me to finally let him go and realize how much he tarnished my confidence. He broke me as a person and I had to fix myself again. Even though I am not as open as I was before, I am slowly finding my feet by surrounding myself with people that make me happy and more importantly, care about me the way I care about them. It's easy to judge from the outside but when you are not in a relationship like I was, it surrounds and consumes you without even knowing it. Just know, it's not your fault or your job to fix everything. You are growing every day and perfect the way you are.

At least, that was the plan...before I found out I was pregnant.
It hit me like a train. I couldn’t even hold the pregnancy test; my hands were shaking so hard. This was every girl’s worst nightmare. And, I don’t know, at the time, it felt worse for me because no one could know. I was all alone. And I can't tell you how bad it could get if anyone found out, but I can tell you that it would involve the police and lawyers. And even if everyone supported us, I still couldn’t carry this life. I couldn't even drive for God’s sake. And based on my math, I couldn’t have been more than 8 weeks along. The clock was ticking and so I decided to get rid of it.
Here was *some* good news. I could take something for it. Unlike the surgical option, this way I could get a one-and-done injection or something I could take at home - something painless, and most importantly - private. The bad news though, was that almost all methods – at least the safe ones - needed my parents’ signature. And if that wasn't enough, they're only effective for pregnancies under 11 weeks. I was already around 9 weeks, and so time was running out.
The longer I waited, the less likely I could do it safely, and the more likely someone would find out. Now, I knew they sold what I needed at the pharmacy. I remember walking into the pharmacy, past the guard at the door, and heading straight to the pregnancy aisle. Walking past all the baby food, diapers, and toys, it was kind of surreal to see what my life could have looked like if I didn't interfere. When I finally found what I came here for, I couldn't believe how expensive they were! I even had to check if I had enough money with me.
As soon as I got home, I locked myself in my room as I studied the packet. But to my surprise, it wasn't going to as quickly as I'd hoped. According to the box, based on how far along I was, it would take anywhere from one to six hours from when I took it to when everything "came out" just like a period. What this meant was I couldn't do it at home, where my parents were 24/7. But I needed a clean and stress-free space. So, instead of doing it that night as I'd planned, I waited another week when I was scheduled to babysit my cousins overnight. I would've been around 10 weeks by then, but it was a risk I had to take.
It was a waiting game now. I'd taken it. And by tomorrow morning this whole nightmare would be over. That was my hope right up until the moment I started feeling it. Something wasn't right. It started with cramps - as I expected - but it just kept ramping up until it felt like a blender was going off in there. It came in pulses; waves. Soon, I realized this was nothing like a period. This was pure agony. I couldn't stand. I could barely think. All I knew was that this wasn't going to be quick or painless. I wasn't going to make it... The last thing I remember is hearing the door open, and seeing a small thing come out. I think...that was my...
The next thing I know, I'm on a bed. In a hospital. There's a nurse by my side, monitoring my vitals, and as our eyes meet - "You're awake!" I wanted to know what happened. How did I get here?" That's when she told me that it was my little cousin Arthur, who had found me and called the ambulance. He saved my life. And now I want to pay it forward. I want this story to be a lesson in making decisions you can look back on and smile about; a lesson that asks: would your younger self be proud of the person you've become today?"
We chose this story because we want to encourage people to speak up if something similar has happened to them and to seek help if they're still in such a situation. “Tell us if you could have ANY ARMS you want, what would your dream arms be?”
Finally a question that I was being asked that looked at what I wanted not what the world thought I needed and should have. From just this one
question I was excited. Open Bionics were about to change my life.
If you haven’t seen part one of my story you are probably wondering what happened to my hands when I was really young I fell ill with Meningococcal Septicaemia B. My hands were deteriorating fast and my parents were forced to make the hardest decision to amputate my hands.
One of the biggest challenges I faced after coming home from the hospital was learning how to adapt without hands, it was really difficult for my parents to watch me struggle. BUT they never gave up on encouraging to I would try and do things for myself like opening doors. I struggled a lot at first but when I realised that I could do it all by myself something inside me clicked and I knew I could become the independent person that I am today.
My mom was determined to get me new hands and threw herself into researching prosthetics. We decided to start with what we could get for free, it was quite an eye-opener for my mom and for me- my first prosthetic was given to us in a brown paper bag like it was something we should be discreet about. I remember sitting in the back of the car staring at the paper bag, thinking that if it was a ‘hand’, I wouldn’t use it all. I couldn't associate it as a hand and honestly, everything about it scared me.
One day, I couldn't take it anymore and sobbed to my mom asking: "Are these the only arms made for people like me?!"
At that moment my mom and I held each other and cried. I couldn't help but think how these prosthetics hands would not help those kids at all and that I needed to do something to change this. I was determined to find someone out there that could help.
After trying private clinics with no luck, we decided to we needed to find new options when my mom stumbled across an appeal that had been put out by a startup company called ‘Open Bionics’ - they were using the new technology 3D printing and was looking for a ‘below the elbow’ child amputee to help them with a project that they were involved in. Straight away my mom emailed them and explained my history and that we were desperate to help companies create a hand prosthetics for kids and that I would be an ideal candidate. Three weeks later we got an email back asking us to pop down to the clinic for a meeting.
D: “We are so glad you are here Tilly, why don’t you tell us exactly what you are looking for?”
Instantly I knew this company really cared about what I wanted as much as what I needed. I felt like I had control over the design.
I explained to Open Bionics that it was so important for the hands to help me with practical tasks. I would love to be able to brush my own hair. But not only that, they needed to make me feel cool and empowered wearing them. I wanted a hand that would embrace my differences and make me unique.
I remember telling everyone that one day I would love a whole wardrobe full of hands that I could mix and match up to my outfits as I thought they could be a cool fashion accessory. It could look so stylish!
I now travel the world in my own right not only as an Open Bionics ambassador but as Tilly. Sharing my story. This story! And trying to inspire others to do the same. I have met so many incredible people and been given so many wonderful opportunities. I never would I have thought I’d be able to stand on the blue carpet at the World Premiere of Alita Battle Angel alongside Rosa Salazar and being presented with the Alita’s Berserker Body bionic arms by James Cameron and Jon Landau. I am forever grateful for these opportunities and where they have gotten me today.
I want to keep working with different organisations to make the best hands possible and make them available for all amputees all around the world. I feel like my life has only just begun and that I have something to say. Embrace who you are. Everyone has differences and your differences are what makes you stand out. Love you and only be you. People are people and it is as simple as that! I am excited to carry on standing on the big stages, working with Open Bionics, sharing my story and hopefully take the stigma away from what people call a ‘Disability’ What people class as my disability is actually my ABILITY. So this is my story what’s yours?"

The 5th grade was not a great year for me. I had no friends and remember feeling very much alone. My brother was in another class so I couldn't talk to him . I was always singled out of everything . I wasn't a shy person. Well, maybe a little. I guess I just liked to focus on my education and I preferred to work independently. This made it hard to make friends with my peers . What made it even harder was how toxic I felt many of them were .
Thankfully I enjoyed learning, and that's all that really mattered to me at the time . Every day I just kept my head down and got on with my work as normal, until one day, there was an interruption in the normal routine. An unfamiliar woman walked into our classroom with this kid trailing behind her head down. Our teacher smiled and called for our attention . "Class, we have a new student who will be joining you. Everyone, please meet your newest classmate, Brianna."
I don't know when or why exactly it happened, but my classmates got sick of her silence. They started messing with her . Soon the rumors began to spread. One thing to note about Brianna - she was a really pretty girl, but her clothes and shoes often had stains or holes in them . They started calling her poor and dirty. They said that she smelled and that she hadn't showered in a month . When they told her to her face she was an orphan and that no one loved her, she finally reacted, but with tears. This went on for about another month, until that day came that I will never forget.
It was the end of recess. The class was lined up on the basketball court waiting to go inside . I was waiting in the back of the line just behind Brianna. Though I never stuck up for her directly, I always made sure to give her a little smile . I sometimes said hi to her, and I could tell it made her day because she always said hi back and smiled . That day at recess, in the back of the line, I smiled and said hi. She grinned and it made me so happy . But the happiness on our faces disappeared when a group of boys, her main bullies, came over from the front of the line .
I turned to Brianna. Tears were falling from her eyes. I remember exactly what I said to her. "You don't stink." I said firmly. "You're good." I gave her an encouraging smile and she looked at me with gratitude, but also sadness. That look has stayed with me ever since . "Thanks" she murmured. The line started moving and the class walked back to our room . When I turned around, Brianna was nowhere to be seen. Where had she gone?
"It has come to my attention that your classmate Brianna has been badly bullied by THIS VERY CLASS . Brianna. A sweet girl who only just joined us, who did not have a bad word to say to anybody . Instead of lifting her up, you saw weakness and you tore her down, calling her names and even telling her the earth would be a better place without her." She paused and looked down at the floor. "As some of you may know, Brianna hasn't been in school for two weeks now . Her parents have just informed me that..." She paused again. "Brianna tried to take her own life."

The PancOne Network funds research, raises awareness and supports the effort to increase survival rates of pancreatic cancer. Today, the average survival rate is only 8% and is almost unchanged in 40 years because research is underfunded.
This video tells the story of Douglas. For 14 years, he has been a pancreatic cancer survivor. It was however nearly too late for him when they found out about his cancer only by the time the tumor had reached the size of a grapefruit.... MinuteVideos tells the story of how he and his family were able to fight the disease and become survivors.

One day I decided I was going to look for some chat rooms. I wished I could speak with my friends on them but they’re not allowed on. Their parents have blocked them because they say they’re dangerous. I’m not really sure what my parents think of them but I thought to myself ”well…. if I don’t ask them, then they can’t say no haha”. I’d not been in chat rooms before and I felt kind of nervous, like I was doing something I wasn't supposed to be doing, but it was the only thing I had left to do to stop my boredom.
I sat up in my bed clutching my phone as I navigated to Google and began typing... “online chat rooms for kids”. The list was endless and there were definitely some really strange ones that I shouldn’t have been looking at. I found one that was just ‘random chat for kids’ so I decided to sign up. As soon as I joined I started getting messages. pop , pop , pop, pop, some of them were reeeeeally creepy so I just stayed in the main room. After a while of chatting with a girl called Sam, I accepted her private message cos she seemed nice. But as soon as I accepted her, she asked if I could send her a picture of me. I wasn’t going to do that so I blocked her straight away.
After my lunch I went straight back to my room, he wasn’t online anymore but I did have another message from him… “Hey, I’m going into my work now but if you want you can find me on Snap chat, I sometimes use it to show kids with depression some of my animals as it really helps them” I didn’t see any harm in it and he was a good person so I decided to download snapchat and add him. We spoke for a few days there and he did send me some pictures of his animals, then one night I said bye and he replied with “bye babe!”..... Bye babe?!? Why did he just call me that. I turned off my phone and threw it down as fast as I could.
As I opened the message I saw the message from the night before and then a new one that read “morning babe hope to speak to you today” eugh, no way! I was FREAKING out! I took a screenshot of it and sent it to my friend who was a year older than me. She replied saying “haha go along with it and act like you’re not scared”
I decided I would do this, just for a bit and then I would tell my parents what he had said to me. So I replied with just “Morning”. As soon as my message had gone through he was back at me with another question, this went on all morning with creepy words in all of his questions, sweety, darling, babe! Why was he saying these things?!? He knew how old I was, I told him when we first spoke. Later in the day he started saying that he thought I didn’t trust him, and he was right! But I didn’t want him to know this yet cos I was kinda having fun with it.
I told him, NO, you have to wait! After that he started asking me if I liked older guys and I do not at all, but of course I said yes! He asked me how much older and my answer was “oh, like 2 to 3 years older” knowing that he must be much older than that. Then he says “Awwww, I guess you won’t like me then”. I asked how old he was and he said “I’m 39 but I look younger”. I screamed in my head and was nearly sick in my mouth when he said he said that. A few minutes of silence past and then a message pops up “Do you still like me?” he asks.
My parents explained to me how dangerous what I had just done was and that there are some very bad people on the internet waiting to groom children to make them do nasty things and sometimes even kidnap them. My mum has now blocked me from going on the chat rooms just like my friends, unless she is with me or she knows they are definitely safe. Now I look back on it, what I did was dangerous and if I ever see it again I will report them and tell my parents straight away.

One night in January 2007, my mam was woken by the sound of whimpers from the nursery. I was running a temperature but I was also at the age of teething, so my mam just gave me some Paracetamol Syrup and returned me to bed. But a couple of hours later, I whimpered again. When she picked me up, I got sick. She brought me to bed with my dad and her so they could watch me close. In the morning, my mam noticed my breathing was quite rapid and rang the doctors straight away.
In the waiting room, I sat on my mam’s knee, unable to lift my head off her chest. The doctor checked me over, looked in my ear and said “Ah, there’s the problem. It’s an ear infection. Just pop to the pharmacy, pick up some kids’ ibuprofen and she’ll be right as rain in 48 hours .” My mam was so relieved. We picked up the medicine, but I wouldn’t be better in 48 hours. I’d barely be alive.
My nanna was in the middle of changing my nappy when, underneath my clothes, she saw massive bruises. It gave her a shock! She had held me so tenderly and gently but now I looked beaten to a pulp. She called for my mam. When she saw the bruises herself, her head spun. This was clearly no ear infection, but what was it?! Normally she would do anything to protect her baby from injury, but how could she defend against something from inside of me?! She ran to the phone and rang for an ambulance.
We were met at the emergency room by ten medics. After they treated me, they sat my mam down and broke the news: I had a severe case of Meningococcal Septicemia Strain B, a bacterial infection of the brain and spinal cord . Then she said the words that no mother should ever hear:...I didn't have much time left. My mam looked at me with tears in her eyes, she felt like she was in a terrible dream. She started to be sick and apologized for it. The doctor told her it was a normal reaction. As if it wasn’t bad enough for my mam to hear the news, now she had to be the one to break it to my dad. “Tilly... She’s going not going to make it. But my dad just looked right back at her and said, “No, she won’t. It’s Tilly! She eats all her vegetables and is such a positive, happy little girl. She won't! She can't!”
For four days, my parents just sat next to my bed and prayed. The next morning, the medical specialists came in, looked at my mam, and smiled. He told everyone I was getting better! That my body had responded well to antibiotics and that I must have incredible strength because I was fighting it!. Everyone cried tears of happiness. My mam collapsed to the floor, relieved, exhausted, and grateful .“However…” he said, “the disease has really damaged her body. We won’t know to what extent until everything settles. …There need to be amputations .” Normally this news would be devastating, but at that point, he could have said anything to my parents. They were getting their baby back! Anything else they could deal with.
A few days later I was back in the hospital for the amputations. My parents discussed with the surgeon to amputate straight across the wrists rather than leave me with part of a hand or finger. How horrible to have to make those decisions!. The doctors gave us a minute alone. My mam just looked at me, heartbroken. I was so little yet had already lived through so much. She held me close and made a promise. She promised me I’d be okay. That one day she would give me, my hands back! The surgeons came back in It was time. They wheeled me away to surgery, leaving my mam and dad alone again, helpless
Hours passed. What was taking so long?! Was this normal?!. My mam wondered how I’d manage with no hands? How would I live independently? How would I make myself a cup of tea and hold a heavy kettle of boiling water?. My mam and dad’s eyes met, each of them wondering the biggest question that no one dare say out loud: Would it even matter? Would I even survive the surgery? They took each other’s hands and squeezed. Holding on to each other. Holding on to hope."
This video is based on a True Story. Tilly is 14 years now and lives in the United Kingdom. After a near-death battle for her life she promised herself to never look back and to use her optimism, strength and perseverance to instil hope in the lives of young children around the globe with disabilities or differences.

It started when my supervisor asked me to work the evening shifts for the next few months because one of our coworkers was going on maternity leave. I was pretty happy because I had only been there for 2 months, and most people wanted the evening shift since it was always less busy with people, and you had a lot of freedom for yourself so I said ‘yes’.
There were only 3 people for the shift, including me. There was Joe who had been working at the clinic for over 7 years and had a really flirty personality. Where sometimes, he’d casually hit on all the girls and didn't care if they were single or married but for the most part, they didn't take him seriously because they knew he was harmless. And then there was Heather, the evening manager, who had been there a little longer than Joe and, for the most part, was pretty hot. She didn’t really care what I did as long as I completed my work so that was nice.
Anyways, it started small with a few giggles coming from the back of the room. I could hear slight whispers between Joe and Heather and then the occasional burst of laughter. Sometimes, they’d walk over to my desk and we’d all joke around. I knew they had been friends for a long time and I could see a weird twinkle in both of their eyes whenever one of them said something. I wanted to ask what the deal was between them but I never did because my workplace didn’t allow relationships to form or if they did, one of them would have to move to a different department to prevent any unwanted drama, so I figured I'd let them do their thing and have their fun.
This continued for at least 2 months, and by then, I had gone back to my old shift. But one day, my supervisor told me to go to Human Resources because they wanted to speak with me. When I sat down, she asked me if I had noticed anything odd that needed to be brought to their attention during the time I worked the evening shift. I didn’t want to say anything that would get someone fired but I definitely wasn't going to get fired for them either.
In the end, I lied and told her I didn’t know anything. I could see she knew I was lying but because I would say I didn’t know, she couldn’t really do much. I felt guilty for it because I felt like they had a right to know and most of all, his wife or Heather’s sister deserved the truth as well, but I didn’t want to be a rat or destroy a family. I could watch drama but I don't want to be in it. It took 2 weeks until something did happen. When I checked on our shift calendar, I could see both Joe and Heather’s names weren’t on there.
It turned out, human resources didn’t really need my statement anyway. They just wanted further evidence. They already had video footage and when they used their badges to scan in, both Joe's and Heather's names logged into the system. My supervisor said they quit but really, we all knew they were forced to resign for their activities. What I hear from the grapevine, those weren't the only things that happened during the night shifts and I would later see more crazy stuff. Anyway, this was one of my work stories. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoyed it."

I walked into my parents room to find my mom shaking with rage in her eyes. I had never seen her so angry when she turned to me and said: "Your Dad got married to another woman on his business trip."
I've always been a happy little kid with had a loving family and the best father, he was forgiving, optimistic, always helped others, had an awesome sense of humor and even his looks were great. He was pretty handsome and young-looking for his age. Dad's a businessman, and his job requires a lot of traveling. Since we're a family, we move with him everywhere, but there was one time where he had to go on a business trip for 15 days alone since the tickets were costly during that time and I had important exams to do at school.
It was Mum's birthday when Dad finally called to tell us that he was coming back home. When he finally arrived we all gave him a bone-crushing hug. Also, he had brought a cake with him. Mum even said, "oh, Dear. You remembered me!" She was so happy. Dad seemed to look even better than when he had left too: his frizzy beard was neatly shaved, he lost some weight and seemed to be in a good shape, he cut his hair and dyed his grey strands black. I never thought about it, but the change was noticeable, especially when it has been a long time since we saw him.
Five days later, I was sleeping in my room one night when I suddenly woke up to hear my Mum's wailing. She was crying HYSTERICALLY as if someone had died. She was saying, "HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?! WHO IS SHE? WHO IS SHE? TELL ME!" I did guess what was happening already, but I tried convincing myself that it was a dream and I went back to sleep.
The next morning, Dad was nowhere to be found, and Mum was wide awake. Her eyes were so puffy I could barely recognize her. It looked like she had been crying all night and hadn't slept a wink. When I asked her where Dad was, she just looked at me, gulped and then walked away...was it true after all?
It had been three days and Dad didn't come back home. Mum just seemed to look sicker and sicker.
Later that night, Dad came back home. I was awake, but I was so scared to see him, so I pretended to be asleep. I closed the door, switched off the lights and wrapped myself in my blanket, but then Dad came to my room and switched the lights back on.
"Hey. You're awake, aren't you?" "did Mama tell you anything?"
Then, Mum came and said, "she heard us when we were talking."
Then Dad said, "come here."
I followed my parents to their room and we all sat together, Mum looking like a zombie, with rage in her eyes. I asked what happened, then that was when Mum finally spoke.
"Your Dad got married to another woman on his business trip. He didn't delay his arrival because of any problem at work, but he was preparing for the wedding. He fell for another woman and she's pregnant too. Your Dad has made a new family."
Mum said she was going to file for a divorce since she couldn't live like that anymore. She said she couldn't bear sharing her husband with some other woman, and she begged us not to feel sad when that happens. We had to call a family meeting not long after, since I was the only one who knew about it and my siblings didn't it put a lot of pressure on me and my sanity started to crumble even more. They had to know at some point though, right? So during the meeting, it was all confessed and we were allowed to ask Dad whatever questions we wanted. I asked him why he did such a thing. All he said was, "sometimes a man needs more than one woman in his life."
Dad would stay over at our house every other day while he stays with his other wife too. My grades dropped and I would get scolded by my teachers. I would cry myself to sleep every night, hearing Mum and Dad's arguments over and over and I never succeeded in making Mum feel any better.
Throughout all of this I felt like I wasn't able to do anything to help those who were around me. Right now, I'm depressed about what happened and I'm still hoping all of this is a bad dream. All I'm ever asking is to go back in time to when we were a happy family, but really I know this can never happen. Because of this experience, I now have lots of insecurities, I feel like I'm worthless. I can't help it but think of what I could have done better as a daughter to prevent this from happening. I feel like this is all my fault. I had a great life and never imagined it would end up like this, sometimes you just don't know the value of something in your life until you lose it.
Most kids are nerds no matter what deep down. Nerds over sports, TV shows and everything in between. For me, it was cartoons and Japanese animations. I was in love with everything art and cartoon related, I even drew my own comics and dabbled in Cosplay.
We started texting and this is where things started to turn sour. It started off innocently but little things began happening overtime. He would encourage me to do all sorts of strange things like dress up in animal costumes with him, where he would proceed to tell me how cute and adorable I looked in those outfits. Not that that was already weird... he then started telling me to do all sorts of strange things in them, even when they hurt. It felt so wrong but the attention he gave me when I did what he said.. drew me in. I finally felt wanted by someone.. by him.
We began having phone calls and video calls all the time. The thrill and excitement I got from his attention slowly turned into an addiction, I felt like I needed his validation but he never seemed satisfied. Things only began to escalate, the more I would give in to his demands. Eventually, he gave me rules.. he would demand I ‘put on my costume before speaking to my master’ with outlandish tasks like ‘lick yourself clean’ or ‘go sit in the corner until you behave’. I would sometimes sit there for hours until I could no longer feel my legs but somehow, I would always just listen because I didn't want to disappoint him.
Despite this, all I could think about was when I would get to text him again. When I would get my next fix. My grades had fallen and I had lost control of my own thoughts and what was best for me. He would scary things to me that makes me too nauseous to even repeat. He’d buy me dirty videos and describe them to me in full detail. Telling me what he wanted to do to my in my 'outfits'. And I ate it all up. I felt older. Mature. For the first time, I felt like an adult that was loved and wanted.
One day we had finally planned to meet in person and I was ecstatic! He took me to a hotel room where we were going to stay with another friend. We were supposed to all go to a college party together but instead Frank insisted we stay in together. As soon as his friend left, he plopped a bag on the bed and demanded I open it. I was horrified to pull out what seemed like a cat outfit... it had ears, a tail.. the whole shpeel. “Put it on,” He said grinning.. I was beginning to get worried.. but still, I obliged.
The second he walked out of the room I sprung straight into action. I started biting at the shackle wrapped around my wrists as hard as possible, anything to get one piece loose. To my luck, it started to move and buckle open and I was able to break free! I didn't even care to grab any of my things and ran straight for the door, tripping on everything in sight. I didn't even take the lift and instead sprinted down the stairs, barely catching a step as I rushed to the bottom floor and out through the back exit of the hotel.
After a painful year of recovery and deconditioning myself from his way of thinking, I started to shine through the cocoon I had built around myself. I started wearing what I wanted. I stopped thinking so little of myself and I even met a boy my age who has stuck by me for almost two years and has helped me recover. I made friends. I graduated with straight A’s and got into a good college. I was finally me again. The storms glued to my side like a parasite had vanished and I could finally move forward with a clear vision of who I was, and who I was meant to be. Though I still feel that pull sometimes. That urge to see his face, I have people who can help me recover and help me move forward.

At the class reunion, tables were assigned based on income. They never thought that poor guy would ask, "Where does a billionaire sit?" It was 9 p.m. at the University's boy’s dormitory. "Kevin, go to room 101 on the first floor and bring me my laptop!" A guy with blond hair from the dormitory next door kicked Kevin's door open. After dropping off a buck, he tucked his hand into his pockets and proceeded back to his room. "By the way, Kevin, do stop by the supermarket downstairs and grab me a bottle of mineral water while you’re at it!" The blonde-hair guy turned around and threw another three bucks on the ground. Two bucks were for the water, and the other was Kevin’s errand fee. "Hey Blondie, why do the people from your dormitory always ask Kevin to run errands for you? Isn’t that bullying?" The people in Kevin's dormitory asked with a straight face as they could not stand it anymore. "Oh! Dear Kevin’s roommates, haven't you all noticed? He’s willing to do anything for money! " Blondie said with a sarcastic tone and left with a smirk on his face. Kevin’s face flushed as he ignored the snarky comments. He stooped and picked up the few banknotes from the ground. He secretly thought, This way, I’ve earned two bucks. That’s enough for me to buy three steamed bread and a bag of salted vegetables, so I won’t starve any more! "Kevin... Don't go. If you don’t have any money, we’ll lend it to you. You don't have to pay it back!" said the dorm leader, sympathetically. Kevin smiled bitterly and shook his head, "Thank you..." He turned around and headed out. The people in the dorm gazed at Kevin's figure from behind and shook their heads with pity. The truth was, Kevin didn’t want to be an errand boy. He, too, wished to spend his days happily in the university, just like everyone else. However, he was lucky enough to even study at a university. He was extremely poor! His roommates were very nice to him. But the more they helped, the less he wanted their help. Otherwise, no matter how strong their friendship was, there would eventually be a gap between them. Apart from his roommates, Kevin had almost nothing in the university! "Kevin, I heard Blondie said that you’re going downstairs." An elegantly dressed student came out of the dormitory next door. His name was Jack, the leader of Blondie's dormitory. His family ran a factory. He was rich, tall and handsome, and was hugely popular among the females. Yet, he had always looked down on Kevin. Even on a good day, he would not look Kevin in the eye. Kevin had no idea why he called him. Kevin nodded, "Yes, I’m going down!" Jack smiled nonchalantly. He took out a box of Durex from his pocket and threw it at Kevin. "Perfect timing. A friend of mine has some business in the East woods today. Go and deliver this to him. Here, ten bucks for you!" Jack was a playboy, and he had asked a lot of girls out. He also had much riffraff. Kevin didn't give it a second thought. He was just looking to earn a few extra bucks. Kevin took it and headed for the stairs. As he turned his back, he seemed to hear Jack's laughter coming from behind. Kevin went downstairs. He planned to drop off the condom first, then grab Blondie's computer and mineral water on his way back. Kevin knew all about the small woods outside the campus. It was a beautiful location notoriously known as the concentration camp for ‘open-air activities’. In no time, Kevin arrived at the place that Jack mentioned. At a glance, he saw a man and a woman sitting on the promenade in the woods, talking and laughing. Under the moonlight, Kevin saw their faces distinctly. His whole body trembled. It was Jessica! Kevin's eyes turned red at once, and the Durex he held in his hand fell onto the ground. Jessica was Kevin's ex-girlfriend. It had only been three days since they broke up. Of course, it was Jessica who dumped Kevin. When they broke up, Jessica said that she needed time alone, and yet, three days later, she came here with another guy!

Our chemistry was unlike anything I had ever known. We bumped into each other after the school game and spoke briefly. It couldn't have been more than a minute, but in that time I grabbed his phone number and he? He stole my heart. Ever since that moment, we didn't go a single day without talking to each other. I was wanted. He was someone I confided in, someone I told everything and, most of all, someone I loved. But to Ricky, I was a secret. He reasoned it was because he was still "exploring his sexuality", but deep down I knew it was because he wanted to protect his image.
He was a football player. On his team, he was "the man", destined to "get the girl" and the scholarship. On one hand, I felt like he was ashamed of me. I saw him as just another man hiding behind a mask, pretending to be someone he's not. But on the other hand, I get it. I know I would've derailed his whole thing. So I held on, hoping for the day that he could run up to me after a game, in front of his team, and show everyone the side of him that only I saw.
He cheated.
If we just broke up right then and there, maybe things today would be different. But instead we argued. We argued for weeks. We argued about how he lied, how he kept me hidden, and what was it that we had. An open relationship? Friends with benefits? And so I started thinking, maybe he didn't cheat. Maybe I just misread what we were. Still, that couldn't fix the fact that I was shattered, disgusted, embarrassed. I loved him with my entire being and he only loved me with a fraction of his.
But when he turned up at my house not long after and apologized, I knew we were more. And I forgave him. I didn't think I'd ever find another relationship like this, so I held on - even if I knew I'd never be as happy as I was before. Something inside me broke, permanently. I wasn't special no more.
Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something he wasn't telling me. So that night, after he fell asleep, I took his phone and went to the bathroom. I know its wrong, I know its a breach of his privacy and his trust. And I would have felt bad if I was unjustified. But I was. I found evidence. He'd been talking to another man,"David". I don't know when it started and if it was serious, but it was on-going. I couldn't believe it. If he told me, I would have been okay. But he lied. Again. Right to my face. It was so easy for him, I had to wonder what other things he'd been lying to me about...
It had been a month since that argument and I wanted to pay him a visit. I was calm. I didn't want to get back together. I just wanted to get some answers, some closure; end on better terms. This relationship deserved that much. I tried calling him - but no response. I tried texting - but he hadn't been online in a few days. I thought, maybe he changed all his contact details so I checked his Instagram, clicked on "tagged posts", and found a recent picture. I remember thinking, "I guess he didn't change his Instagram".
Then, I read the caption: "R I P Ricky".

Jacob was studying at Yale University when one day, he spotted a sign looking for paid volunteers in a school experiment. “We will pay for a day's work and will only take 1hr” read the flyer. Excited to earn some cash, Jacob showed up for the study the following day.
Inside, Jacob met a fellow student, Wallace, and the lead experimenter who had them draw straws. “The short straw is the ‘learner’ and will remember a list of words. The other person will be the teacher and quiz them” said the experimenter. Wallace drew the short straw.
The experimenter strapped Wallace to electrical wires and told him, “For every wrong answer you will be shocked by your teacher, Jacob. If you get a correct answer, nothing will happen”. He then walked Jacob to the next room and showed him the shock panel.
"15v= slight and 450v = XXX. Is that a lot?" Jacob thought. “You will ask the student a question and if it's wrong, you will say “wrong” and shock him moving the intensity up each time. Don't worry. He can’t see or hear us, but we can hear him. You may begin" demanded the experimenter.
Wallace got the first 3 questions correctly “Great job!”, thought Jacob. But then, he got 5 in a row wrong. “Ahhhh!! Okay, this is starting to hurt now”. After the 8th shock, Jacob questioned the experimenter, “Excuse me, is this safe?” “Please continue”, he responded.
After 5 more wrong answers, Jacob looked down at his shock panel and saw it read 315v - close to the danger zone! “I-I don’t think this is safe. It might seriously harm him...” “The experiment requires you to continue," said the experimenter.
“AHHH Please, stop! I-I can't do this anymore!” exclaimed Wallace. “We are hurting him, we need to stop!” said Jacob. “It is absolutely essential that you continue. You have no other choice but to continue until the experiment is finished” demanded the experimenter. “I’m not responsible for what happens!”
Jacob was now at 450v (XXX) - the highest setting. “Please get it right Wallace, please answer it correctly” But there was only silence. “If the learner doesn’t respond, it is incorrect. Continue the procedure” said the experimenter.
He flipped the switch and still, there wasn't a single sound coming from the room. Jacob stared at the voltage meeter and began to sob realizing what he had just done. “Oh My God! I-I just killed him... why did I do that!? What have I done!?”
The experimenter left and when he came back, Wallace was next to him. “You’re alive! Are you okay? What happened?" questioned Jacob. “Everything is fine. I was never in any danger. It was all false” responded Wallace. “It was all a set-up and I wasn’t the subject, you were”.
This was the Milgram Shock Experiment designed to test a person’s influence to authority and see how much pain an ordinary citizen is willing to put on another human. In the study, over 65% of participants administered the highest possible level of shock - 450v. All participants reached 300v.
It’s almost human nature to obey an authority figure - even if that means possibly killing another person. But just because someone in power commands something, it doesn’t mean we you shouldn’t question the moral actions. If you know something is wrong or doesn’t feel right, speak up, and “Let your conscience be your guide”.
