PhD Chat: Nuwan Hegoda Arachchi Intelligent Polymer Research Institute 2022-09-28 | Get to know IPRI and University of Wollongong PhD candidate Nuwan Hegoda Arachchi.Nuwan sits down with us to share his story on why he decided on a PhD, what he is researching and also gives some advice to those thinking of a similar career. Nuwan’s PhD research focuses on understanding the fundamentals of protein adsorption on biomaterial surfaces. Unspecific protein adsorption on implanted blood contacting devices is a significant challenge in the biomedical industry. As a result, these medical devices often fail and create several health risks, such as inflammation and thrombosis. He uses High-Speed Atomic Force Microscope to image real-time protein adsorption on different surfaces at single-molecular level. These observations assist in discovering protein adsorption mechanisms and the role of structural dynamics of adsorbed proteins. This project would be beneficial in engineering new biomaterials to minimise the challenges associated with unspecific protein adsorption. 2021 Bill Wheeler Award Winner Jeremy Di Noro Interview Intelligent Polymer Research Institute 2021-08-23 | ACES affiliate and University of Wollongong (UOW) Biofabrication PhD student Jeremy Di Noro was been awarded this year’s Bill Wheeler Award.Jeremy was recognised for best communicating the social impact of his research on patient-specific implants through 3D printing at last week’s virtual Bill Wheeler Symposium and Award. Supported by the Kiama Rotary Club, the award includes $2,000 in community-raised funding, which will help further his research. The event is held each year in honour of the late Bill Wheeler, an active member of the Illawarra community who took a keen interest in new bionics research at UOW. ACES Webinar with Dr Amelia Liu Intelligent Polymer Research Institute 2021-08-03 | In this ACES Webinar, Dr Amelia Liu discusses 'Characterising Disordered Materials with Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscopy'.Amelia received her PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2003 and then worked as a post-doctoral researcher in the Electron Microscopy Center, Materials Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory (US-DoE) from 2004-2007. In 2008, Amelia returned to Australia, and began employment at Monash University where she has had a variety of roles including a Margaret Clayton Women in Research fellowship in the School of Physics and Astronomy (2009-2013) and managing research capabilities in the Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy (2014-2018). Amelia is currently an ARC Future Fellow in the School of Physics and Astronomy (2019-).Amelia was recently awarded the Australian Microscopy and Microanalysis Society FEI Cowley-Moodie Award for Research in the Physical Sciences for the development of new methods to characterise the atomic structure of disordered materials.https://electromaterials.edu.au/

STEM, COVID-19 and Future Prospects for Researchers Intelligent Polymer Research Institute 2021-02-08 | The ACES Equity and Diversity Committee (EDC) held an insightful Q&A session on STEM, COVID-19 and Future Prospects for Researchers, featuring Laura Navarro (Academy of Science) and Dr Adrian Murdock (CSIRO) from the Early- and Mid-Career Researcher Forum, and hosted by ACES EDC Chair Prof Linda Hancock.The Academy of Science recently published reports on two surveys: a survey on the Impacts of COVID-19 for Early- and Mid-Career Researchers; and STEM Women: One year of impacts and learnings.The ACES EDC Q&A session examined these reports and invited discussion around the results of these surveys.
