dGeckos CoversI'm sorry its taken a little while to get a video online. I have been having so much fun making music I've not got around to making the videos yet. But, this one is a bit special. A fellow VGM Lounge member BobNL recently published a whole album of his remixes of Zelda music, titled "Sounds of Hyrule Volume 3" (yes he has already done two full albums before this one!!) It's an amazing work, and every track is just wonderful, so you should definitely go and have a listen and subscribe!!
Bob added two extra tracks at the end of the album, and asked me to contribute one of them. I was of course so happy and humbled to be part of his labour of love, and this was the track I provided. Hope you enjoy it!!

I have actually been really busy creating original work, and that has not left much time for creating videos. I do have quite a few tracks waiting to be posted though, so I will attempt to address that. I will also have my first album ready to release in a month or so. Pretty excited for that.
So here is a track I made a little while back for a VGM Lounge challenge. Its a simple cover of a Final Fantasy III piece called Town of Amur. Its a really sweet track, and I wanted to use this to practice getting gentle orchestral sounds as realistic as I could manage. Let me know what you think!
I also had a little fun with the video. You will see what I mean if you watch to the end. (Amur must be in the tropics is all I can say!)
I hope you enjoy! Keep an eye out for more videos soon. This track was inspired by the image on the Magic: The Gathering card called "Mountain (Amonkhet)" by Chris Rahn. My mind went immediately to a dessert atmospheric track, blazing sun, parched winds, Arabic overtones, the relentless plodding, undulating rhythm of a camel train as it enters this barren forgotten city. The caravan passes under the mountain, and travels on to an unknown destination.
This is an original track, and I will start putting original work on my other channel and keep my covers on this one. :-) Check datagecko.com for more details or look for my music under the name dGecko. The Secret Of Monkey Island - Opening ThemedGeckos Covers2020-08-24 | This is another VGM Lounge Challenge. For some reason the idea of a summer theme stuck in my mind when I initially read the challenge theme this time, rather than a seaside/ocean landscape theme which it was suppose to be. Luckily I found a track that has both... Secret of Mana - The Color of the Summer Sky, which is the village music for a lot of locations including Turtle Island. So to meet the challenge criteria, Turtle Island is the chosen landscape, and its not hard to feel warm and sunny inside listening to this track. Hope you enjoy it. (If you have a subwoofer, let me know what you think of the bass!)
Secret of Mana, is an action role-playing game developed and published by Squaresoft (now Square Enix) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was directed by Koichi Ishii and programmed by Nasir Gebelli.

The Dark Magicians Banishing Spell - OriginaldGeckos Covers2020-06-13 | For a VGM Lounge challenge we were given three character images from Yu-Gi-Oh! and we had to create an original piece to match the character. I choose the Dark Magician. In the image, as well as references to the character type I could find, there are many circles or spirals, so I used this as a starting point. I wanted a theme that sort of repeated in a spiraling fashion throughout the track. This character's main ability seems to be banishing and summonsing, so a sort of indirect power and I wanted the theme to feel that way too. Not brute strength, but a more subtle form of redirecting power. I also felt there was a bit of chaos or unpredictability with this character, so there are elements and sounds in the track that reflect that. The main instruments are a bit unstable, and in the quiet section the snare sound has this different rolling 3 beat pattern, and in other areas the drums have off-beat strikes that are moving around. The chord progression is also quite complex. I started initially with a I-III-VI-I-VI-I-Vsus-V eight bar pattern, but shifted some of the notes to create two different 8 bar variations. I used that to then find the melody line. I also found a few sound effects that suggested to me summonsing/banishing sounds. The subwoofer rumble at the start and the end are supposed to give the feeling of power building up, about to be released. For a completely original track, I'm happy enough with the outcome. Hope you enjoy "The Dark Magician's Banishing Spell".Castlevania - Simons Quest - Wicked Child ReMixdGeckos Covers2020-05-10 | Castlevania II: Simon's Quest is a platform-adventure video game produced by Konami. Another VGM Lounge challenge piece for the 4 Weeks : 4 Eras challenge (1990s), this was not the easiest piece to reMix due to the bridge sections that are piano parts in the original, and its got this amazingly atmospheric feel to it as well. Hard to replicate that, so I went the other way and made it quite epic sounding with some massive low woodwind sounds that made it sound quite like a huge pipe organ, and used to bass to link the bridge sections. The piano runs at the end turned out really well I thought too, it sound just massive. So, interested to see what you think. Again, this was a challenge piece for VGM Lounge 4 Weeks : 4 Eras challenge (2000s), but in this case it was a suggestion from a subscriber that prompted me to do this track. (This one is for you Holly!!!) And I am so glad I did as this is a really amazing track. Castlevania is full of sumptuous orchestral tracks, and this one really leads itself to a brass workout, but with some silky synths and strings to contrast the bombastic brass. There were a lot of remakes of earlier game tracks, so finding an original from this decade took a little while. Thanks to MisterJay for pointing me in the right direction!! I wasn't sure about this particular track to start with... until I found the sound for the main melody line... once I had that, I was *totally* hooked on it. We had to create an original track to replace the music in this video of game play from a classic game from 1985, Dragon Buster! Originals are always hard, so for this one I took the idea of recreating a new music track to match the game video, and actually have four short themes that played similar to the in the current game... start, adventuring, battle and ending themes. I think it might get a bit tedious after a while, but you only have to survive one level. lol. :-)

Game play video by dezm101: youtu.be/EwR3DStSbaYSailing into the Ice WastesdGeckos Covers2020-02-09 | This is another weekly challenge piece for the VGM Lounge Challenge. This time we had to create an original piece inspired by three images of winter scenes. I chose the one in the background of the video as my starting point.....
Imagine if you will, you are starting a new game, and your first task is to take an old ship deep into the northern ice seas, where the crushing pressure of the ice can turn a ship to matchsticks, or the jagged ice spires can tear through the side of your wooden vessel like paper. You must navigate your way out of the port, and through the ice to clear the harbour and finally set forth on your adventure. This piece is my very first completely original work, everything built from scratch. I really hope it invokes for you the scene in the image.
I hope you enjoy.... "Sailing into the Ice Wastes".
To create this one I started by looking for a key signature that matched the ice cold of the picture. F Minor presented this feel. Then I created a simple chord progression to this key, and used some heavenly pads to create the scene, that rises and falls to the seas swell. I wanted the sound of ice cracking, and found this wonderful recording of the sounds of a frozen lake... its truly magical and works perfectly. Then I build up the cords with two staggered layers of additional strings, and some choir at the high point of the swell. Then I started on the melody line. That stayed simple and didn't want to change path, so it stayed that way for three cycles (maybe too long actually), with the hanging note at the end. I then added tons of automation to get articulation and volumes dynamic. Finally it was crying out for something extra, so the simple bassoon line at the start and end materialised to complete it nicely, and the tuba repeat of this at the start was added to give a boats' fog horn type of effect.
Anyway, it was an interesting experiment in a more ambient style.

This time the challenge was simple to recreate the song "Trouble Brewing" from RuneScape, with everyone starting out with the same base midi file.
I was trying to go for a bit of an orchestral sound with this one, but the brass really decided to take center stage!! (Those trumpets are such show offs!) This was initially done with mostly stock orchestral instruments in Ableton Live, with a little sampled percussion to add a slightly comical feel to the middle section, and some big drums to add drama to the last section. Later I went back and update the brass and strings with some new instruments, and a little more big ass drum for the bottom end. I think they helps fatten up the sound. Ended up doing a lot of scripted volume control to try to make it more authentic. Hope you like it. :-)

Game: RuneScape Year: 2001 Developer: Jagex Composer: Ian Taylor, James HanniganSuper Mario Bros - What if Mario was a 3rd generation Aussie?dGeckos Covers2020-01-23 | I had too much fun creating this weeks VGM Lounge Challenge submission, though I wish I had another few hours to tidy it up, but time is not on my side. To be honest, I was daunted by the broad scope of this weeks challenge so I went back to an old standard, but with a thought to make something a bit.... comical. The bright idea was... "what would it be like if Mario was a 3rd generation Aussie!?!" So I set to making something that I thought would sound somewhat Aussie. I started with, of course, a didgeridoo. And with this Ableton provided a magic tool called Warping. I found a copyright free sample of didge playing, but of course the breathing didn't match Mario's rhythm, but using Warping I could realign all the breath work to match the Mario beat. It really is magic how it works. I did the same for the jaw harp sample. For the main instruments I wanted something laid back, so used a slap bass (upright bass), and as Australia is often portrayed upside down, I also inverted the melody lines so the slap bass carries the melody. The drum kit I assembled from bits and pieces once I found the "hey" sample. The drums are a bit lazy on purpose, like your average Aussie. :-) Then I added the Kookaburras to underscore that this was not to be taken too seriously. :-) That then got me thinking about the game video... wouldn't it be cool to replace the Super Mario Bros soundtrack and sounds with Aussie sounds. Great idea yea, but that was a bit more work then I anticipated, because I had to slow down the game video a bit, overlay the music, and then manually add and sync up the sound effects again! So many of them!!! And for the sounds... well I just recorded myself, and used Audacity to pitch it up to a "character" voice. (I know it sounds more like a 10 year old.)
So, I really hope you enjoy this weeks submission and get a bit of a laugh from it.
Big thank you to Pii89 whose game play video I stole a bit of. Hope you don't mind. :-) Watch the whole thing here: youtube.com/watch?v=rLl9XBg7wSs
Game: Super Mario Bros (1985) Publisher: Nintendo Composer: Koji Kondo Midi file: Ahmad CathcartDreams of The Stickerbrush Shore - A Re-imagined ReMixdGeckos Covers2020-01-15 | This track was another VGM Lounge weekly challenge piece. The challenge was to recreate any song from a video game, and make it sound as if it were coming from another game!
Making one song take-on the characteristics of another was not easy, so it took quite a lot of experimenting this time. The base song is "Dream of The Shore Near Another World" from Chrono Cross, but done in the style of "Stickerbrush Symphony" from Donkey Kong Country 2. It was probably a foolish idea to start with two such iconic pieces of music, but I'll let you be the judge of the outcome.
Some notes on how it was done: I took the Dreams midi and slowed it down to a Stickerbrush tempo. I then spent forever finding instruments to match the Stickerbrush feel, which is not easy as it's such a unique piece. I then added in some of the iconic motifs from Stickerbrush, including the synth sweep. The repeating marimba from Stickerbrush had to be adjusted for the key changes in Dreams, with some additional notes for some of the interesting chords. I then laid in an instrument to give that echoey feel, and tweaked the lead instruments to match Stickerbrush as best I could. It was suggested that the third run of the melody line might be nicer with a variation, so I went back adjusted the instrument, and added some variation and additional notes to develop the original melody further. I think that worked out ok. I then remastered it by adjusting EQ on all the tracks, and the master, and finally added a little multi-band compression. I think that cleaned up the sound and removed a lot of unwanted harmonics, though I am only really just starting to learn about this aspect.
Love to hear your feedback.
[I've left the pre-remaster version online too just for comparison. I might make a comparison video just to show why EQ is important to the mastering, even as someone who is just learning, and not really knowing what I should be doing yet. :-)]Dreams of The Stickerbrush Shore - A Re-imagined ReMix [Pre-Mastering]dGeckos Covers2020-01-11 | [Note: This is an early release before I learnt how to EQ out the tracks better. "its only a matter of time before you gunna die Dirk the Daring!!!" Which I remember vividly was what usually happened to me within a minute of playing the game. It was brutal, one wrong step and... you died spectacularly, game over. The audio spectrum runs like clock hands counting down the time till Dirks inevitable death, and the ghostly visage of the outcome is hovering there to taunt him about it.

Creepy bugger. :-) This is another experiment in Ableton Live, trying to add a bit more life and variation into the sounds (velocity, etc), and a little more tweaking to the midi this time. Again I wanted to soften the raw original track but still keep some power behind it.
It ended up being quite percussion focused.

I wanted to keep that bubbly feel from the original while giving it a softer makeover. I know there are like a million covers of this out there already, but hey... here's one more. :-)
Mostly this is another learning exercise for me in Ableton Live. Hope you like it and the simple visualisation to go with it.

Its a mystery to me though, because I didn't record any details when I got it, and I have not been able to find the music anywhere since. I'm pretty sure it was an Amiga mod, and all I have to go on is the filename... afterbur.it and there is a good chance that is wrong! lol
I am assuming it is called "Afterburner", but its not from a game of that name that I can find. Its more likely a demo, which was super popular in the Amiga scene. The .it extension stands for Impulse Tracker I believe.
If you know this piece, please let me know as I want to credit the composer and thank him/her for an amazing creation! I hope you don't mind that I have shared your work in this way - its with the very greatest of respect.
This piece has always reminded me of a flight through space so I thought I would create a video with that feel to it, so I could share this amazing track, and who knows, maybe solve the mystery (for me at least!).Elations new album, 8-bit Disco!dGeckos Covers2019-12-05 | This is a shout-out to Elation to promote his new album, 8 Bit-Disco. This is my first attempt at a ReMix (a cover really). I choose a piece of music that was very dear to my heart when I was younger, a game that set the imagination alight with the possibilities that were to follow. I have only just started using Ableton Live, so hopefully I can improve these remixes in time.
