This is a tool-assisted speedrun (TAS). Played on SwareJonge's Dolphin 5.0 LUA Core v3.2.1. Tools used: slow-down, savestates, frame advance, TAS input, TAS code, text files, and LuigiM's TAS toolkit.
"I have gone completely mad and TASed an entire lap with a text file" - me, yesterday
Anyway, I set out to improve on the last flap with better lines, but I was having trouble making any improvements, plus I have just got tired with keyboard TASing. So, I spent two days learning how to use text file TASing and LuigiM's TAS Toolkit, and after a few roadblocks (with desyncs due to input ranges and ghost errors due to unfinished races), I officially started the project.
I started off by looking at the clip, because the clip landing drift is super wide, and after about 10 seconds, I actually got an improvement by accident. By taking the clip slightly higher, I was able to be in a more intense nosedive, meaning a better bounce to the right and a tighter drift overall. After about an hour, I had optimised this drift to be much tighter than the previous BKT.
I took the next few turns properly this time because I had the patience to do it with text file, and I hope they are optimised enough. They look fine to me because funky's elbow passes through the correct walls and funky's head is facing towards the right tiles. I'm not very sure about the slip turn and I have a feeling that there's a better way to take it but I'm not going to waste my time on a fifth edition to this category.
I'm still not completely certain that taking the left path IS definitely slower. But I still took Luke's advice and took the right path instead. This made optimising much easier because I wasn't faced with the same amount of QM as the slip turn in the previous run. Yes, I know, I got lots of airtime in my double drift before the shroomspot. I spent 3 days trying to get this to not happen and I couldn't get it to do anything other than lose time.
The second and third shroomspots went better than expected. I got a beautiful alignment into the third shroomspot from the perfect amount of airtime I got from the second shroomspot. Again, funky's elbow passed through the right amount of walls on the third shroomspot. The ending section was easy to do because I just needed to change how much I was turning in my wheelie on the bridge to fix the alignment into the double drift. Like the last run, I spent a lot of time on Luke's ending strat. Only difference was I was able to fix the stick much faster.
And with that, I thank you for taking the time to read the description! Hopefully you actually watched the video if you took the time to do this. Tell me what you think of the run in the comments and I'll see you soon in a reply!

Back in May 2021, Wade474 found a way to perform the ultra shortcut on this track without 200cc, and made a flap TAS. I had been wanting to TAS this track since 2019, but that pushed me to start work on a lap 1 in August. By October, I was ready to mess around with the ultra, and managed to get it both with Flame Runner and with only 2 mushrooms, making a pretty awful lap 3 to demonstrate what a finished 3lap would look like.
I was worried that there might even be a way to do it with 1 mushroom, so I spent a whole livestream with Jellopuff making sure there wasn't (youtu.be/VbTK5If5Kw0), but managed to get a cool ejection (youtu.be/VMHZmPZVFHI). Around this time, I became more interested in work on CTGP Backwards, but I came back to it in January 2022 to work on lap 2. I lost motivation at the ultra lap 3, and never worked any further.
When superhopping was discovered in May 2022, I (and many others) thought that CT TASes would essentially be forced to use it whenever applicable. This killed my motivation for TASing for several months, and I never planned to finish this. Over time, this belief about superhopping being required has turned out to be false, since the fun of CT TASes are that there are basically no rules. CTs are already unofficial so you can put an arbitrary set of restrictions on your TAS and people will still enjoy it (in fact, it's considered rude to outright state that a CT TAS is suboptimal if it's missing superhopping).
That being said, I considered TASing this again last year, but was never motivated enough to work on the daunting task that was performing the ultra. It wasn't until a few days ago that I finally faced the challenge that's been haunting me for almost 3 years, and got this done.

What? Why are you looking at me funny? I did exactly what it says in the title.
Oh.
So, Aylx made a joke submission in Task 6 of TAS comp last year, in which he completed an almost "all trees" lap. The rules we've made up are that you have to touch all trees and complete lap 1, using all your mushrooms. I kinda joked once in a VC that I'd make an actual TAS of this joke, but then seriously considered it, and did it back in late February.
I probably could have uploaded this on April Fools Day, but forgot it existed, and now kinda regret not doing so, because it was my first April Fools Day not uploading anything since 2019, but hey, at least more people get to see it now, since apparently YouTube likes the new TAS awards video (if you haven't watched it, you should, it's really cool).
Anyway, seeing as this is a joke category, there is not much optimisation done here. The first 20-25 seconds are decent, and then it just falls apart in the second half, because tree QM sucks and I couldn't care less about optimising any further.
If you're wondering why some of the tree hits don't generate any bonk effects (sound or visual), it's because effects run on some sort of cooldown that resets every half second or so (this is why MG ultra has periodic bonks instead of it being constant), and I hit multiple trees before this can happen.

There are so many things happening in this TAS. Everything is more precise than it looks. Watch it again, you'll probably spot something new. This has been in the works for almost 2 years, so it is a great delight to finally be able to share it with you!
All the way back in April 2022, I had a huge boost in views for my TAS of Hman's Deathrun (youtu.be/5BMZmOWrWcU) due to its inclusion in one of @TWD98's Impossible CTs videos (youtu.be/b_e_w2Cjj0A). Because of this, I thought TASing another "Impossible CT" could cater to some of that audience. So, I picked the very first track shown in the 2022 run of episodes (youtu.be/3mfLY12CrbM).
After a LOT of strat testing, I made a prelim 1:41.957, before stopping to go and work on the two rSGB 3laps with Zip Zip (youtu.be/trmk5u-ssyY) and Shooting Star (youtu.be/G_4trkj7ACo). I came back to it shortly after, but then started work on other things and eventually lost interest.
If you've watched Special Task III from TAS Comp 2022 (youtu.be/Y1-24gNMmrY), you probably recognise the fact that it was done on the secret area of Grassland Mountain. The reason I came up with the idea for that task is because I had been TASing the track at the time, found the secret area, and thought it would make a great task.
See, I noticed a hole in one of the mountains (which is actually the end point of the task), so used noclip (https://noclip.website) to see what was out there, and discovered several parts of the track outside the skybox. I spent quite a while driving around the track to try to find a cannon that would take you there, but eventually I resorted to using Lorenzi's KMP Editor to find it. As it turns out, it was in the starting area and I just hadn't searched hard enough.
After the task, I had interest in the track again, but with TAS comp back, and my time much more limited, I didn't continue and eventually forgot. I would occasionally remember and tell myself I would get around to it but never did. That is, until this past week, when I finally completed lap 2, discovering a few new strategies as well (I didn't redo lap 1 because it had taken me so long to get this far, I didn't want to go through it all again).

Like with the rDH NG flap, I felt like TASing the track, so went in with no improvements in mind, simply TASed the flap, and ended up saving a good amount of time. Unfortunately, I started this TAS before @Alego11-TAS showed automatic to be faster for flap, which is why it'll be obsoleted very soon. I'm not entirely surprised, as there was never any indication that manual was ever faster - Estaloy's 2018 flap was just unoptimised, which made it easy to beat with manual. However, I really wanted to have a go at optimising a manual TAS of this track, so didn't branch out into testing automatic as one might have done if they were TASing it to see the limit rather than TASing it for the sake of TASing (I also really like the look of manual strats over automatic strats for this category in particular).

On DS Delfino Square, using Mario on the Sprinter / B Dasher Mk 2, and NO mushrooms, complete lap 1 as fast as possible.
- You MUST use the provided code which makes MT charging mimic Mario Kart DS, and gives the Sprinter the MT stat of the original B Dasher

Clarifications: *To charge a miniturbo, you must alternate the stick back and forth once after 10 frames of drifting to get a MT (which gives no boost), then again after another 10 frames of drifting to get a SMT (which gives 35f of boost).

...And the gap between the RTA WR and the TAS BKT for this category widens to more than 1 second for the first time in history!
This was a classic pre-2019 style flap project where I simply decided to improve this run with no specific improvements in mind and then did so.
The improvements are as follows: - Doing the first turn drifts more efficiently - Implementing @TASPlasma's second turn slip drift strat from 2019 (youtu.be/Pr-HL2I7w4E) - Getting a lower double trick - Getting a wheelie at the ending cut (and also approaching it tighter)
I'm sure there are other improvements to be found, but this is the best I was able to do, and I'm really just enjoying TASing for the sake of TASing while I still have the chance.

...Huh? Why are we back on an inside drifting bike again? That's a good question. Let me tell you the full story.
Rewind all the way back to December 2019. @09cf comes up with the idea of performing rBC ultra with a barrel roll (youtu.be/cQyCPvTisTY). If successful, this would bring the current flap (at the time, 27.346) down by several seconds. In February 2020, he tried setting the barrel roll up on the wall itself (youtu.be/s9h-g4Or_zc), but that didn't lead to anything. It wasn't until November 2020 that he got it (youtu.be/l--zrBDTiTs), though it took 3 mushrooms, and the flap time was over 30 seconds (though it could be improved).
He immediately realised an easier setup by dropping off the wall which would make it RTA viable (youtu.be/MbPsnzIzBWI), and begun working on a release video for the new strategy. In the process of cleaning up the demo lap, Ejay managed to get the 2 shroom barrel roll ultra (youtu.be/RHRVhBVz7yM), giving a flap time of 27.534. Realising it was close to the flap BKT, Ejay pushed it down to a 27.310 post-upload.
Fast-forward 2 weeks and Malleo is now interested in TASing an optimised flap with the new strategy. Malleo and Ejay worked together for 2 days on the setup, clocking a preliminary 24.137 - over 3 seconds faster than the previous flap BKT. Unfortunately the flap hype didn't last long, as Marth and I had finally begun working on an optimised ultra 3lap. This unfinished flap was not touched for over a year.
During the making of the 3lap, we managed to get a lap 2 time of 23.972. @campbellmop355 then infamously had us restarting lap 3 when he saved more than a frame over the ending section, getting a 23.954. Before this however, I had made a few prelim lap 3s, and got a 2:05.226, which when spliced with the fastest existing end section after the spiral skip, gave a 2:05.116, which is what the published TAS is. Since this was the first time any flap faster than the 27.346 was released, 23.972 finally became the new flap BKT.
In September 2021, @justin3055 showed a way to skip the second respawn using a shroomless barrel roll clip (youtu.be/Oxaopl0QMJ8), then later that same day Ejay did it without a barrel roll (youtu.be/JA04l-AiUT4), completely revolutionising shroomless clips from then on. Branching off the 3lap, he got a 22.130 lap 2 which, when spliced with the beginning of the Ejay/Malleo flap with 2020, would yield a 21.938.
In February 2022, I finally decided to work on the flap with the intention of finishing it with others. I spliced the 24.137 and 22.130 to get the 21.938, then worked my way down to a 21.799, knowing about 0.5 could be cut from a quicker SSMT release at the clip. As was the trend at the time, this new project showed up and then gathered dust, being left untouched for another year.
It wasn't until April Fools' Day this year, with @Monster3rum uploading the 21.350 with Zip Zip and superhopping, that became interested in really pushing Spear to its limits, hoping to finally give the public a chance to see the work that was done and never put out in the open. I took it upon myself to improve the SSMT, now having some more experience with shroomless clips, and brought it down to 21.342, barely edging out Monster's time.
I had intended to upload it then and there for yet another double April Fools, pairing it with the DKS flap (like I did with the rDH and rPB videos in 2022). However, that night Monster improved his own Zip Zip time by 0.5 seemingly out of nowhere - getting it down to a 20.816, so I decided not to upload, expecting him to upload his run soon. But then he proceeded to not do that... for 8 months! So, while the 20.8 hasn't been uploaded yet, you all get to enjoy Spear being faster than Zip Zip by a mere 8 milliseconds (and then once it is uploaded, this will still be IDB BKT, yay!)
Improvements: - If this really quick setup by Ejay (youtu.be/jhg9Fq4UQ5Y) could work, then it might be enough to edge out Zip Zip for a second time - It's slightly faster to do the turnaround as Ejay does in his original shroomless clip demo (youtu.be/JA04l-AiUT4), but I didn't seem to have the right QM for that when I made this - You may not be able to notice the difference by watching, but the last turn is slightly worse than the current best one seen in the 3lap (which itself could be improved by 0.018 as shown by CampbellMop)
On Delfino Pier, using ANY character or vehicle, and ONE mushroom, knock over all 3 custom placed cones in the given order:

In short, the following improvements were made: - All-round better optimisation, including use of wheel inputs - Improved start slide by @EjayB - Improved zipper stick sequence by Police - Improved boost ramp RFH by Police - New supergrind by @MKWiiTomas - New supergrind by myself - Where applicable, matching BKT strats, e.g. final reject road push (which was found by @ramoelleusrs6678 back in 2019)
I spent from September 2021 until December 2021 trying to get a supergrind after the cannon to be faster (youtu.be/JMFG-BJj294). Unfortunately, that didn't pan out, and we were forced to continue with the much harder zipper stick strategy.
I started us off from the beginning with a new start slide in March 2022, and Police and Ancient optimised the beginning to the cannon, then Ancient made a base ghost for the zipper stick. Over the next few weeks, into April 2022, Zappg and Rogue helped optimise it. This being a strategy nobody wanted to help with, and overall community activity plummeting, no work was done for most of the rest of the year.
In September 2022, a task was run on DKS where Thomas discovered a supergrind after the offroad cut. Since he didn't finish his run by the end of the task, he had extra interest in optimising the task as much as possible. Because of this, in November 2022, he realised it wasn't just faster for Special Task IV, but for DKS as a whole. This meant it applied to Task 3 2020.
That same week, a sudden contribution by Rogue sparked activity in the project. Rogue and Police finished off the zipper stick and moved onto the boost ramp. Community activity still being low, this didn't last long, but work resumed in February 2023, when the activity picked up again. Police and I finished the ramp and moved on to the offroad cut. Police and Ancient then worked on the supergrind and made good progress on the moguls. However, the backwards hop at the single cut was proving difficult to recreate.
From February 2023 to October 2023, several attempts were made to perform the backwards hop. In July 2023, I improved the moguls section and made my best attempt at properly matching what Jellopuff did in his run (the jammed trick with a hop off the sloped side of the mound to rotate you significantly mid-trick). This didn't lead to much, and it wasn't until many more attempts later that, in October 2023, marvus was able to get the backwards hop, by approaching the ramp from slightly further left than Police and I had been trying.
Finally past the biggest roadblock, I was eager to finish this track quickly, so optimised the backwards hop and then immediately proved a supergrind upon landing to be faster. Once that was finished, Police and marvus took care of the ending, and the TAS was complete!
Hopefully, after dealing with 2 complex and QM heavy tracks (rWS and DKS), the next task will actually be done quickly this time! In yet another partnership with Custom Track Jams, I will be making a lap 1 TAS of every winning track of Series 3! The third track, winning Season 1 Jam 3 (Fire + Ice), is Phendrana Frostbite by Fuffina and ISC.
I never actually lost motivation to finish this lap, but rather ran out of time to do it, and then preferred to do other things instead. Having run out of other things to do, I came back to this to finally get it over and done with.
Some things to note: - The first turn and the following straight are really annoying. Those bounces are not as trivial as they might look - I'm not sure whether the triple hop to take the second turn really is fastest, but that seemed to be better than taking a wider line - The flip ramp section just LOOKS improvable, but I couldn't get anything faster than the most basic of trick sequences - The trick inside the tunnel can actually ride the wall for a little longer, extending the trick boost farther, and technically distributing the boost more optimally, but unfortunately the line taken actually loses more than the additional boost saves, making a very cool strategy slower - The two double tricks at the end are both incredibly finicky, and just like the beginning, are harder than they look - In order to align for lap 2, I lost 2-3 frames. I was very lucky to be able to get below 36 seconds because of this

Music: Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition - A Tragic Decision (youtu.be/wLXyb_wJPc4)
The difficulty of making a good TAF on a regular track is the lack of new discoveries available, which usually makes for either very short or very uninteresting freeruns. I feel I overcame that challenge, as I not only have made a decent-length freerun, but also found a few things I don't believe have been done before. In researching things that HAVE been done in order to try to keep this as fresh as possible, I put together a playlist of all Rainbow Road TAFs to date, feel free to check it out: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbnjjnFG8yVSETx_J_Wl-cd0-QHDH50C_

With the ever approaching RTA WR very close to the time of my original TAS, I've wanted to redo it before it was beaten. Silly, I know, but being out-optimised by RTA is not something I wanted on my conscience. There is actually a fairly major timesave I left out of this (ramp is about 0.1 faster) because I wanted to keep the TAS as close to the previous one as possible in terms of strategies, to ensure you all know where the timesaves are coming from. Had I simply uploaded a 3lap TAS with the ramp, there would have been no indication of what a rampless run might look like, and there could be arguments made that the TAS was only faster than RTA because it used the ramp. Now you can see that, no, the TAS is definitely faster than RTA. Besides, the existing prospect of TASes being used as markers for the time limit when a track is this simple is not something I wanted to pass up. I know how useful it can be to know how good RTA runs are and where there is still room for improvement (look at GBA Shy Guy Beach 150cc). I will probably come back to the track later this year to give it its full treatment, ramp strat and all.
Please let me know in the comments if you have no interest in 200cc TASes. I will not do them if you do not want to see them. I enjoy making videos other people enjoy, so just saying "do what you enjoy" is not what I need :) Be open about your opinions on my content!

Started on this in August 2022. Had no problems keeping myself motivated, even through multiple restarts from finding better ways to do tricks or more trick locations. What I wasn't able to overcome was finishing this entire lap 1 only to find a 0.1 timesave on the second turn of lap 2 (cutting behind the tree and hopping over the grass is faster) that applied to lap 1. I was really unhappy when this happened, since I was very much planning on finishing all 3 laps, and being left with either redoing a months' work having a lap missing a major strat was too much.
Why am I uploading it this far in the future? Well, I've finally remembered, wanted to, had time, and had motivation all at the same time. That is often the case for every TAS. So, if you ever ask "why isn't [some TAS] finished yet?", give them a break, they're trying their best. We're not machines.

Started on this at the end of August 2021. Worked on lap 1 on and off for a week or so, then worked on Sagittarius Circuit for a bit before returning to finish it, getting this time later in September. By October, I made a LOTAD of the ultra lap 2 and shroomless lap 3, to get a time of 1:51.703 (youtu.be/nM6FgHH8LYU) I came back to it in January 2022 to work on lap 2, but lost motivation, and never worked any further. Because of the precision and difficulty of the ultra, not to mention the fact superhopping would now be faster, I have no plans to finish this (and before you ask, I never had plans to make a 3lap no glitch TAS).

In 2009, Guillaume became the first prominent MKWii TASer. He held at least one TAS WR until 2019. By then, the most prominent TASer was Rocky. Fast-forward to 2023, Rocky only has 6 flap WRs left, well, now 5. Anyway, I have this weird desire to see his name gone from all flap WRs just to make it clear that 2023 is different from the 2018-2022 era. Whether that will happen before the end of the year is uncertain, but I'll certainly see what I can do.
I should have saved more time. This TAS is by no means unoptimised. I actually put in quite a lot of time and effort into making this (Rocky's TAS was surprisingly strong). However, I entered the lap with 15 more frames of trick boost, which should have saved 4 or 5 frames. I also had wheel inputs to help make several sections faster, most notably the final ramp trick. I have no idea why I wasn't able to save more time, but my guess is the third shroom, as I struggled a lot with it.

I've been wanting to make this TAS for several years now. Ever since I joined the TAS community in January 2019, this has been the oldest standing record. Back then, of course, I didn't have my eye on the category, nor did I have the skill to make the TAS. But, by 2020, I was more interested and better equipped to do it. However, I was still under the impression @Jellopuff_TAS intended to finish his own WIP for this (youtu.be/W84NLdC5ffM), so never pushed to work on it.
By 2022, it had been long enough. However, each time I gained motivation to work on this, there happened to be some new TASer trying this out expecting it to be a simple task, only to give up upon realising it was not. By the time they gave up, I had lost the motivation, and no TAS was ever made. This happened two or three times, the last of which I still had motivation left when they gave up, and so I got to work.
About a week ago, I finished the DS Delfino Square flap project, so was able to start work on something new. This is, of course, what I worked on. It's safe to say this is one of the most daunting flaps out there, which is why the 2011 record stood as long as it did, and after finishing the run myself, I can understand why (well, I kinda already knew after making the No Turnskip 3laps, but I finally had to TAS the turnskip here).
The lap entry has always been a mystery, since it's not clear that everyone understood how Jellopuff got the ejection distance he did. I realised last week that he used one of the tree roots to get a trick boost into the RFH ejection trick, and so was finally able to replicate it.
The turnskip is brutal. It took me about 15 hours over 2 days to get it once, and that once is the one you see in the TAS. I was originally planning on maybe changing the lap entry time to have an optimal net cycle once I completed the run up to that point, but after having that much trouble with the turnskip I just left it as it was and moved on. My respects towards @l4m3join01 have risen very high knowing he did this back in 2018 without TAS code, and then another 3 or 4 times with, all in a matter of weeks.
As for the music choice... Forest Maze has always been the tradition for MT flaps ever since @Malleo's 2013 ultra flap (youtu.be/iyHZt499_q4), and this specific rendition of the song was used in the 2018 ultra flap (youtu.be/XTzsIYwlsLs), Jellopuff's first TAS WR. Seeing as Jellopuff's short video is the reason I always had an interest in this category, I thought it would be kinda fitting to reuse that remix in this video as well.

I started working on this TAS back in October, and reached out to Ejay asking if he wanted to collaborate with me. He agreed, and helped optimise the latter half of the supergrind, the fountain shortcut, and the deceptively difficult turn after. After a bit of inactivity, I was able to get a prelim 36.3 in November.
After that, little to no work was done on the TAS until this past week. Since we last worked on the flap, Thomas did significant work on a lap 1 for a 3lap TAS, showcasing optimised ODB strats. I realised that we had the incorrect cycle as the drawbridge needs to NOT be flat, so Ejay and I agreed to just clean up the rest of the lap and leave out the ending SG as the only major optimisation missed (as we would need to optimise the entire TAS from scratch multiple times to find out when we would need to start the lap, which would be very tedious and a huge waste of time). After a couple full days working on it, I was able to finish the run, saving another 0.8 from just optimising better.
Fun fact: Some of you may have seen in the TAS discord that I told Thomas about the SH around the turn at 0:31 when he was working on that part of the lap 1 TAS. I did this because I had done some work on this flap and found the SH there, only to find Thomas not using it.
Special thanks to Ejay for suggesting the music, I really like it.

In yet another partnership with Custom Track Jams, I will be making a lap 1 TAS of every winning track of Series 3! The second track, winning Season 1 Jam 2 (Pasta), is Making Some Pasta by tarsa.
I really struggled to stay motivated to complete this TAS. Obviously, I only ever promised to make a lap 1, but due to the nature of the track changing over time, I felt I needed to make a full 3lap TAS to do the track some justice.
There is so much going on in this TAS: - Every single lap has a different route. This is what intrigued me the most and made me wish to pursue a full 3lap TAS. If you didn't know already, I really enjoy TASes that have odd routing quirks and different strats on each lap, so this was a perfect opportunity to enjoy that. - There are many very precise parts to this run which were really annoying to have to do (or redo): the start slide and landing trick, the sticky road ejection before the lap 1/3 shroomspots, the tight turn right before the lap 3 shroomspot, and all 3 of the final ramp interactions (each of which are different, due to the different routes and lap transitions). - I use a custom start slide to move myself left and a little backwards so I can exit the starting platform with full boost speed (without this I would not have enough room to accelerate and would spend multiple seconds in the air falling at less than maximum speed). - Every single trick I perform in the lap is in a different place. On lap 1, I trick off the finish line and the mushroom pad. On lap 2, I double trick the road entering the water section and trick off the boost ramp afterwards. On lap 3, I trick off the boost ramp at the end of the right route and then the final boost ramp.
On Heart of China, using ANY character or vehicle, and a maximum of THREE mushrooms, complete the following objectives in the given order as fast as possible.
- Start in the teleporter room* - Trick off a trickable surface inside the disco room - Wall bounce SSMT off the "X marks the spot" wall** - Trick off the swim ring in the swimming pool room - End by entering the last checkpoint***
This is a highly recommended 3-person team task, so you may collaborate with up to two other people.
Clarifications: *In 2021, we used a custom version of Heart of China v2.0.3 which made all the timed walls fall immediately. Here, in addition to that edit, the starting position has been changed to be in the teleporter room. This was not part of the rules but because of this, lap completion is never initialised and so is locked at 0.000000 (checkpoint 0), which is why driving backwards (and therefore never entering any loaded checkpoints) then respawning sends you back to the finish line. **You must hit the wall and, as a result of the bonk, charge an SSMT ***Because there are 3 different laps you can end up on when entering the last checkpoint at the end of the task (driving to the finish line before going to the disco room loses a lap; not doing the respawn loses another lap; allowing for 0/-1/-2 as lap options), the lap you are in when you end the task does not matter, and so you only need to the checkpoint, not complete a reverse lap.

All my thanks go to @Malleo for voice-overing the script I wrote, as the video would not exist without it! Additionally, thanks to @Wade474 for checking over the script, and tweaking a few minor things.
And of course, huge thanks to the people who let me use their content as background footage for this video, which meant it wasn't just a blank background with text and images popping up occasionally.

One last side-note: I put a ton of work into this video, including picking the best music possible to make it enjoyable to watch. Unfortunately, this includes something copyright claimed, so I'm unable to receive any ad revenue. To help counter this, if you could share the video to a friend after watching it, that would really help boost this and the other videos on my channel, thanks![MKWii TAS] DS Desert Hills Flap - 24.799 (No Ultra)Kierio042023-04-04 | TAS by @Kierio04, @thepolice3822, @ancientmkw, and @campbellmop355.
This TAS has been in the works for a long time. So long, in fact, that the combo used here isn't even optimal anymore. Regardless of that, it's finished now, and you all get to see the strategies used!
It all started in August 2020, when @09cf found you could clip the pole to get on the blocks shroomless, slowing his stop by hitting the edge of the banner.
In February 2021, Campbell, Ancient, and @kall796 decided to work together to start a collaboration for this flap category, but never got past the first turn. At the time, this was a big step forward for up-and-coming TASers, since the only big collaborations so far had been from people in TASLabz. As such, I've always had my mind on this project, hoping to see it to its completion some day.
In March 2022, activity was high in the TAS community, and a legendary video had just been released (youtu.be/K_FE0P_PyDM). In it, half a dozen new strats, including a new way to perform the U-turn skip on DS Desert Hills. I was intrigued by this, and wanted to test its potential, so decided to finally revisit the old TAS that I'd wanted to work on for a while. I branched off Campbell's setup and Ancient's flap progress, and found a way to get the first turn with almost no slowdown.
I then reached out to Police (who had recently being having huge success in the TAS competition, and who was a major contributor in my CTGP backwards videos), and asked if he could try to find a way to get onto the blocks shroomless. He responded a little while later with a triple trick (youtu.be/NA8w-hn-JU4), but unfortunately neither he nor I could get the U-turn skip and hill skip with a single mushroom like Jellopuff did, so the strat ended up being slower overall.
In the process of working on the flap with the correct first shroomspot (where I had got the time down to 25.303), I was struggling with the RFH strat for the third shroomspot, and found you could eject high enough to end the lap without touching the blocks. I switched my focus over to the no glitch flap, and uploaded that on April 1st, in protest of the category rules at the time (which had banned the end cut from no glitch).
A couple weeks ago, and almost a year later, I finally worked this project to its completion. I improved the first turn by another frame, and optimised the rest, getting sub 25 by a huge margin, and an exact 0.7 timecut. I'm very happy to not let the work done by Campbell and Ancient 2 years ago go to waste, and think it's kind of fitting that Campbell's first TAS WR comes almost exactly 3 years after his first TAS (from Task 6, in April 2020).

When you enter a cannon, the game manually updates you position along a set path at a given speed determined by the cannon setting. In this case, your speed in the cannon turns out to be about 500. Whenever you exit a cannon, your speed must be returned to what it was before you entered it, so whatever action was occurring on the final frame before entering is applied to the frame you exit.
In the case of a low cannon, this happens because you graze a wall upon entering the cannon, and then experience the speed loss upon exiting it. Since wall hit speed losses are dependent on your angle relative to the wall, the more extreme the angle, the more extreme the speed loss.
So, what should be impossible under normal circumstances, if you hit a wall and lose almost all your speed upon entering a cannon, you will end up with negative speed exiting it. This should be impossible since if you drop to almost 0 speed and are facing towards a wall rather than the cannon trigger, you won't be able to enter the cannon.
Enter supergrinding. By supergrinding into a wall you can achieve the same angle you need for a 0 speed wall hit but have EV left over to bring you into the cannon on the following frame. This unfortunately comes with the caveat that the external velocity you use to get into the cannon is also considered in the speed loss on the final frame, and so you just end up with a regular low cannon.
By some stroke of luck, there is a way around this. For whatever reason, if you enter a cannon mid-air, your external velocity is NOT considered (presumably if you were to be accelerating in a fall, it wouldn't all of a sudden hurdle you out of the cannon on the other end with increased speed), so as long as you are in the air when performing a 0 speed wall hit with momentum directed towards the cannon, you will exit the cannon with negative speed.
But how much negative speed? Well, Nintendo wanted to ensure you wouldn't exit the cannon with more speed than usual, and wanted the higher speeds still retained a somewhat equal amount of speed exiting the cannon, so they used what looks like a negative inverse exponential with a linear asymptote to determine cannon exiting speed. As you might expect, this breaks down quickly when you traverse into negative speeds, and we end up with about -560 IV. Wait, IV?
Normally, velocity is capped at 120, however in the transition between cannon speed and exiting speed, there needs to be a grace period where this does not exist to make it look smoother (unlike when you enter the cannon). This grace period starts the instant the cannon is triggered, and ends when your airtime resets to 0, since there is no guarantee you will reach any point in the exact same amount of time.
So, we exit the cannon with this -560 IV and get shot immediately backwards, with enough speed to not only pass through the cannon exit wall in a single frame, but fly across to where KCP2 is located, skipping the entire post-cannon section.
As an extra note, you can only enter a new checkpoint if you exit the one you're currently in or adjacent to. This means we actually drive backwards over the cannon checkponts until we exit them, jump straight into CP23, and enter KCP2.
