70mm Cinema Endings: Vertigo (1958) [1996 reissue] Gavin King 2022-10-16 | As you can plainly see, emulsion lines plague the tail end of this print. But, if I’m being completely honest, they’re outshined by the stunning crispness and vitality of the print itself, holding up remarkably well from ‘96. The film is not rated, hence the absence of an MPAA rating tag, but I was personally hoping to see the Universal Studios Hollywood tag, which sadly either 1) was not on the print or 2) was but the projectionist cut the bulb before we could see it.Filmed at the Gateway Film Center in Columbus, Ohio on 10/15/2022.Universal Studios owns all rights; only uploading for archival purposes.

35mm [Home] Cinema Endings: Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) Gavin King 2022-01-03 | Heading back to the 35mm content in dribs and drabs (with my inactivity mostly due to the absolutely draining holiday season at work over the past week or so), with this one I got as a Christmas gift. I was surprised to find out that upon opening the package this is a Technicolor print. As some know, Technicolor shut down their 35mm film distribution lab a good deal before Deluxe, which went on until around May of 2014 before FotoKem became dominant. Granted, the credits do note “Prints by Technicolor” clearly, but Paramount’s dependence on the Deluxe lab especially this late into the format’s lifespan had me making different assumptions. I was proven wrong, and I wholeheartedly welcome it. :-)5 reels. SR, SRD, DTS and SDDS tracks. Bizarre Nickelodeon television broadcast interruption (circa 2009) [please read description] Gavin King 2021-12-09 | On March 25th, 2009, at approximately 3:13 P.M. EST in an act of television broadcast piracy, an organization labeled as "Painty's Pretty Pirates" - evidently a reference to the titular character in the theme song for SpongeBob SquarePants - hijacked Nickelodeon's satellite television signal for approximately two minutes, interrupting a rerun of the aforementioned series' episode "Krusty Love." The episode ran as normal until about halfway through playback, when erratic "stuttering" noises and sudden freezes interfered with the onscreen signal. Ultimately, the image began to demonstrate brief distortion in various manners (accompanied by strange and sudden sounds), followed by an abrupt cut to solid black. Not long after, a faded and obscured image of Painty the Pirate appeared across the screen, and a myriad of sound effects successively started to play, including but not limited to the Windows XP "Error" sound, a female text-to-speech robot voice stating the loss of video input, an audio clip of Sandy Cheeks from episode "Pre-Hibernation Week" saying "No, you ain't," audio of WWE celebrity John Cena speaking in what appears to be Korean, and Michael Jackson's much-infamous "Hee-hee" from his hit single "The Way You Make Me Feel." After another cut to black and a short patch of silence, small white text appeared that stated "WE ARE COMING FOR YOU." The image yet again cut to black, which was then followed by a complete loss of signal via TV static. After this, the input apparently switches to a Packard Bell computer boot-up screen (suggesting the Nickelodeon technicians attempting to combat the issue) along with a Windows Boot Manager error screen. An error message soon after appears above the Boot Manager, stating how an "illegal operation" has been performed. More TV static ensues, followed by a silent video clip of characters SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star standing in a white background, observing their surroundings. An abrupt cut is then made to an all-caps message in white text that reads, "WE HAVE FULL CONTROL - THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO - © 2009 PAINTY'S PRETTY PIRATES" as well as a screenshot of Painty the Pirate as featured in the "Truth or Square" SpongeBob SquarePants special episode in the lower right hand corner, all in front of the iconic SMPTE color bars. Another round of TV static follows. Then, a message to viewers from Nickelodeon regarding the inconvenience is displayed onscreen, accompanied by an image of a frightened SpongeBob on the left on the screen. After one final round of static, the station's regular programing resumes.The specific identities of "Painty's Pretty Pirates" remain unknown to this date.Also, obviously, this is fake.Also also, more 35mm videos will be up soon.

Running reel 1 of Monster House (2006) on 35mm film Gavin King 2021-03-05 | This video has been pitch-corrected.Don't think I've posted about the print of Monster House that I've had in my collection for a few months now, so... tada! Yup, this one's been in my house since early October and I've been nursing it ever since. I'd say it's in decent condition (especially reels 2 and 4). There's a deep emulsion line that runs through the first 2 minutes or so of reel 5 (the final reel) and a few sparing green lines and scratches here and there throughout this reel and the third one, but the color and clarity are top notch.I've played this in full twice for an "audience"... once during a get-together with my good friends in late October of last year, and about a month ago for some extended family. So it's seen its fair share of wear (did I just rhyme three times in one sentence? That's right.) but it's very watchable and presentable and makes for fun viewing especially towards spooky season.Any questions regarding the print, fire 'em down below for me to answer.And, yes, the Shrek 2 videos are coming... trust me.Monster House is copyrighted property of Sony Pictures Movies & Shows.
Carmike Cinemas Emergency Exit Policy 35mm snipe Gavin King 2021-02-24 | This hasn’t been seen in years. There was an old Carmike theater in my area known as the “Maxi-Saver 12”, so named due to their enormously awesome $1 ticket prices, which has now been replaced by the Century Square Luxury Cinemas (not at all associated with Carmike/AMC). They would play this little snipe before every single show. Yes, that’s right, it was an entirely-35mm house, on all 12 of their screens. The final film I had the honor of seeing here before they kicked the bucket in late January of 2013 was the 2012 Red Dawn remake. Yeah. Maybe “honor” isn’t the best word. But I miss the Maxi-Saver.So when this piece of multiplex history was made available on eBay, you know what I had to do.“Buy It Now.”What you’re seeing here has been presumed lost media up till now. When you compare it to Carmike’s more recent emergency exit policy (which has music to boot, unlike this one), the differences are pretty clear. I don’t know exactly when this particular snipe was produced, but the sides of the film indicate that it was printed on 2006-dated Kodak 2383 film stock, and it was made by Chicago-based Filmack Studios, a studio that is mostly known for providing pre-show content to chains like AMC.Enjoy! And apologies for the brief shadow movement at the 7-second mark as I was attempting to bring the projector into sharper focus.I do not own copyrights to this material. Period. End of sentence.
Shrek 2 UK 35mm opening (2004) Gavin King 2021-02-21 | *Pitch-corrected... no, not because of any "UK PAL-pitching" nonsense, but because of the speed of my projector, which tends to run ever-so-slightly higher than exactly 24 fps. The print itself has the original unaltered pitching you'd find in a US print.But hey... here's a cool find I added to my swamp. Yes, sirs and ma'ams, this is a genuine UK 35mm print of Shrek 2. This arrived at my house earlier today (February 20th, 2021) and marks the first complete UK print in my collection. It is a 5-reel print.I plan to upload a cue mark compilation later on in the week as well as the usual "35mm [Home] Cinema Endings" bit.Any questions about this print just ask. District 9 35mm Cue Marks (and Tail Leaders) Gavin King 2021-01-09 | [Mild Epilepsy Warning]Decided to do something a little different regarding 35mm for once and show something other than just the end of one reel. Here are all of the cue marks - or “changeover points” - in the 35mm print of District 9. I recently got this print off of eBay for a decent price, and a very high quality print it is. Also I decided to throw in the tail leaders of each reel just for fun. The reason the sound may appear to be a little “muffled” has nothing to do with the print itself but rather my very bass-heavy speaker system that tends to sometimes favor raw power over finesse and nuance. Running reel 1 of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius in 35mm Gavin King 2020-11-22 | To alleviate any concerns; YES, I have ALL 5 reels of this movie on 35. Not just reel 1. I’ll upload more of it later.The print is also slightly open-matte; as you can see when I temporarily remove the flat (1.85:1) aperture plate, a bit more of the top and bottom that you wouldn’t find in a regular theatrical screening or a widescreen digital/DVD master of the film is revealed. I wouldn’t have expected it for a digitally-animated feature, to be honest, since most if not all CGI films are hard-matted to 1.85:1 in post-production, but this is an exception to the rule, I suppose. Muppets Most Wanted (2014) trailer in 35mm Gavin King 2020-09-29 | Sorry for the brief hiatus - we recently purchased a new lens for this projector that allows the image to appear larger onscreen and we finally got around to making it look as good as it can.This is a clearly used-before trailer, and as such there’s a few emulsion scratches and audio pops that are present upon playback (trust me, they’re not my doing - that’s how this looked when I first screened it through the projector). Either a lazy former projectionist or poor storage has proved that this particular reel has seen better days. Still, it looks and sounds quite good, and plays without any major hiccups (save for that frame jump at the tail of the trailer).Disney owns Muppets Most Wanted, not me. 35MM Cinema Endings: Jurassic World (2015) Gavin King 2020-08-11 | Here's another from the old Twin Hi-Way - and, blessedly, with the entire tail leader being played through. They have my respect for that. Not many outlets for 35MM do. It provides a lot of insight into the film lab, the digital intermediate, and such. (The DI on this particular film is Company 3, as evidenced by the framing chart after the main credits.)Filmed on July 11th, 2015, at the Twin Hi-Way Drive-In located in Robinson Township, PA. 35MM Cinema Endings: Terminator: Genisys (2015) [Iffy Quality] Gavin King 2020-08-11 | Apologies for the grainy quality and vertical video on this one, but I found this whilst rummaging my old hard drive. For once (it's been forever, right?!), the entire tail leader is played through (look for the "TERMINATOR GENISYS DOM R-7" identifier), and as evidenced by the formatting of this leader, it's clear this is a print struck from the FotoKem lab based in Burbank, California (Deluxe closed its Hollywood lab back in May of 2014, leaving film distributors no other choice). Also of interesting note is the "PROPERTY OF SKYDANCE" tag that appears immediately after the MPAA rating bumper, proving the print's authenticity and providing something cool you wouldn't otherwise see on a digital print. Note that the music playing in the background is not from this film but rather the Jurassic World 35MM print playing on the screen I was at when I ventured to this drive-in; this location's second screen (I was on screen one) was directly behind me, so I decided to take advantage of the convenience and film the ending for the sake of good archival.Filmed on July 11th, 2015, at the (now closed) Twin Hi-Way Drive-In located in Robinson Township, PA. Digital Cinema Endings: Despicable Me (2010) Gavin King 2020-07-29 | My local drive-in movie theater, the Dependable Drive-In (located in Moon Township, PA), is showing a double feature of the first Despicable Me movie followed by the original 2001 Shrek through Thursday, so I decided to spend my weeknight participating in said double feature. Note that this particular DCE has two identical rating tags - this is because the digital master of Despicable Me that was provided to this drive-in is presumably the original release master from 2010 (the old “Universal Studios Hollywood” tag at the tail which was soon replaced by the current “Universal Parks and Resorts” tag is a dead giveaway of this), when Universal still placed rating tags at the tail of their theatrical features - and this particular drive-in has a policy of placing their customary rating tags after each movie, regardless of studio. This should explain why you’re seeing double.As usual, I own none of the content featured in this video, and NBC Universal is the sole owner of everything you see here.

So THIS happened... (Non-Cinema Related Video) Gavin King 2020-05-07 | Just a heads up, I drop an F-bomb in this video. Just so you know what to expect.I had my car parked in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle supermarket located in Elizabeth, PA, where I sat and lounged for a bit listening to some tunes and scrolling through my phone. A couple minutes pass, and a pretty thick wind rears its ugly head. Nothing really insane, just some typically strong PA winds. The force manages to send a couple sheets of pink insulation foam (those big pink foam sheets that feature the Pink Panther) from the top of a less-than-compellingly-constructed ceiling of some sort of small building and into the air, flying down onto various areas around the block. It naturally spiked my attention, so I booted up my camera app and documented some of the evidence just for fun. Then seconds later something miraculous happens. A gutsy flash of supposedly impactful wind surges through, which seems to be enough to have the ceiling throw up DOZENS of these insulation sheets in the beautiful Elizabeth air, which then proceeded to wreak their lovely little pink havoc all across the square, including but not limited to towards a Valero gas station/convenience store, a locally-owned shrubbery next door, the parking lot I so sit in, and even the poor oncoming traffic on Atlantic Avenue. It was a little terrifying and absolutely hilarious; my reaction should be enough justification for that.Luckily, no one was injured, and no automobiles were totaled in the process of this happening.I’m just lucky as hell I caught it on camera.YOU MAY NOT RE-POST THIS VIDEO ON YOUR ACCOUNT OR OUTLET WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. [The Gavin King Vault] 35MM Pre-Show Ads at Twin Hi-Way Drive-In (July 11th, 2015) Gavin King 2020-04-19 | I'll keep this brief, but the story behind this video: The night of July 11th, 2015. Busy as HELL at the now-closed Twin Hi-Way Drive-In theater in Robinson Township, PA. Cars lined up like sardines out on Steubenville Pike causing a clogged artery of traffic. Among the cars in that line was us, in our Dodge Caravan. Like most everyone else in this line, we're here for the pairing on Screen One: Minions and Jurassic World. We pull into the insanely crowded lot of parked cars in front of the huge outdoor brick screen and somehow find a spot that suffices. It's still a good bit until the movie starts, so we grab concessions, walk around, yadda yadda yadda. As I'm walking around the premises of the property, I notice an open door on a high-up shack. My eyes widen at the sight of a FIVE-tier platter system with film wound through it. I hit the jackpot. I had assumed this was a digital-converted drive-in considering the Dependable out in Moon Township made the switch-over in May of 2013, and they followed suit here. Not the case. We struck gold. A 35MM outlet near where I live?! In mid-2015, no less?! Someone pinch me, I think I'm dreaming.Anyhoo, movie's about to start, and the pre-show ads begin to play. How 35MM advertisements of 2015-era establishments could be in fruition was beyond me. I suppose Screenvision was just feeling super friendly and had enough $$$ to help out a friend in need. Over these, the "voice of the Twin Hi-Way Drive In", Jerry Salnoris, makes an appearance. It's his usual pre-movie announcements before the feature presentation, in which he teases coming attractions, special events, and more. In this particular instance, not only does he advertise movies soon to be shown on these screens (listen hard - Pixels, Ant-Man, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible (Ghost Protocol), Vacation (2015) are the ones he lists out), but he also informs audience members about his mother's birthday, which just so happens to be the day we discovered this place. On that day, she turned 93! That's awesome. As a celebration, he encourages guests to honk their horns in appreciation, and as you're able to hear the response was great.Overall it was an awesome night - a double feature of modern movies I didn't even know received a 35mm release until then, classic drive-in atmosphere, and flat-out fun. It's too bad I was only there one more time before its frustrating closure. (I say frustrating because the property is now a Sheetz convenience store... as if we needed another one of THOSE.) Had I been informed of its 35MM grace before then, I would've made regular weekend trips.Film is NOT dead. I refuse to believe it is. This is PROOF.Minions is property of Universal. 35MM Cinema Endings: Tomorrowland (2015) Gavin King 2020-04-19 | I can't remember if I uploaded this one in the past or not... regardless, here's an oldie but a goodie I found on my old hard drive. Again, apologies for the vertical video. This was filmed at the now (sadly) closed Cinemark Movies 10 in Lynchburg, Virginia. I was only there once, but it was an awesome little place. Small but cinematic, and FULLY 35MM projection. Does it get any better than that?! I believe this was in auditorium 4, by the way.Tomorrowland is a trademark of Disney, who owns all rights.
