Shell Historical Film Archive
Shell’s surprising and captivating Historic Film Archive dates from 1934 and covers a rich mix of topics from technology, science and engineering to craftsmanship, motorsport and travelogue.
The Shell Film Unit, responsible for the content, was a highly celebrated part of Britain’s Documentary Movement. Key figures from that movement were involved, including: Jack Beddington, Edgar Anstey, Arthur Elton, John Grierson, Kay Mander, Stuart Legg and Douglas Gordon.
Its films were wide reaching, often screened in cinemas and through the non-theatric film distribution circuit, which brought film to educational establishments and organisations across the UK. While many films covered technological themes related to Shell’s activities, others were entirely unrelated and served purely to educate the general public.
As Shell innovated in technologies that would provide oil and gas products for the world, the Shell Film Unit also innovated in the technological advancement of film, incorporating graphics and different forms of animation as early as the 1930s.
During WW2 the Shell Film Unit was co-opted into war effort, making films for the Ministry of Information’s film division. Its prowess in technological documentary suited the MoI’s need for technical training films.
While the name and the medium has changed many times over the years, the documentary tradition lives on at Shell. Its contemporary film team is part of Shell’s multi-disciplinary in-house agency, Creative Solutions. It continues making award-winning factual content that informs and educates the public, now usually released on social media platforms.

Its films were wide reaching, often screened in cinemas and through the non-theatrical film distribution circuit, which brought film to educational establishments and organisations across the UK.

A private venture development from the Gloster Meteor demonstrates the first entirely new aerobatic for 20 years – “cart wheeling” -and there is an astonishing display of four De Havilland Vampires. To the problem of very high speed flight in large aircraft, two opposite solutions are shown. The Short SA4 has a very thin wing, and four jet engines mounted in pairs one above the other: the Vickers Valiant has its four jet engines inside very thick swept-back wings.

In a Hawker Hunter, Neville Duke flies through the sound barrier at 700 mph. The Vickers Supermarine Swift and the Vickers Supermarine 508 are on show – the latter has a ‘butterfly’ tail, helping to give the wide speed range needed for naval, work. The Avro 707B, low-speed version of the 707A, is now seen to have been planned with a view to development of the world’s first Delta-wing bomber – the Avro 698.
In airliners, besides the Comet and the Viscount, the Bristol Britannia is on show, designed to carry up to 114 passengers, at a cruising speed of 400 mph, for a lower cost per ton-mile than any competitive aircraft. The Bristol 173 is the first British twin-rotor helicopter; able to fly on one engine only, it can vary 13 passengers at speeds of up to 158 mph.

The Le Mans circuit, which comprises of purely public roads, is 8.5 miles (14 km) long. With nearly sixty cars racing, the fastest competitors will be travelling at 160 mph down the three mile straight. The vehicles racing are road cars that must carry standard equipment along with all the spares and tools needed for the race. Some of the finest sports cars from France, Italy, Germany, England, and the USA take part. All 57 cars are lined up for the traditional Le Mans start with a crowd of 180,000 people watching in anticipation.
On lap three an Italian Ferrari goes round at an average of 107 mph (172 kmph), shattering the lap record previously held by Stirling Moss. Signals from the pits call the drivers in for refuelling and inform them of their position after two hours of racing. Through the night the French Gordini sets the pace at the highest average speed on the circuit, but by 3 am is out with brake trouble.
At 10 am on Sunday morning only 24 of the original 57 cars are still running. Pierre Levegh, ahead by 35 miles (55 km), has a clear lead over the German Mercedes. With three hours to go Levegh refuels for the last time and with victory in sight, despite extreme fatigue, decides to continue driving. Ninety minutes later he retires with a broken crankshaft.
Levegh reaches the pits a tired and disappointed man after having victory snatched from his grasp. With only 17 cars still running, the German Mercedes take first and second place, followed by the British Nash Healey in third. In years to come there will be much discussion about whether Levegh should have handed over to his second driver, but no one in France will forget his magnificent drive in the 1952 Le Mans 24 hour race.

Shell Eco-marathon is one of the world's leading student engineering competitions. Over the past 39 years, the programme has consistently brought to life Shell's mission of powering progress together by providing more and cleaner energy solutions. The global academic programme brings together Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) students from across the globe to design, build and test-drive some of the world's most energy-efficient vehicles.
Shell's Net Carbon Intensity
In this content we may refer to Shell's "Net Carbon Intensity" (NCI), which includes Shell's carbon emissions from the production of our energy products, our suppliers' carbon emissions in supplying energy for that production and our customers' carbon emissions associated with their use of the energy products we sell. Shell's NCI also includes the emissions associated with the production and use of energy products produced by others which Shell purchases for resale. Shell only controls its own emissions. The use of the terms Shell's "Net Carbon Intensity" or NCI are for convenience only and not intended to suggest these emissions are those of Shell plc or its subsidiaries.
Shell's net-zero emissions target
Shell's operating plan, outlook and budgets are forecasted for a ten-year period and are updated every year. They reflect the current economic environment and what we can reasonably expect to see over the next ten years. Accordingly, they reflect our Scope 1, Scope 2 and NCI targets over the next ten years. However, Shell's operating plans cannot reflect our 2050 net-zero emissions target, as this target is currently outside our planning period. In the future, as society moves towards net-zero emissions, we expect Shell's operating plans to reflect this movement. However, if society is not net zero in 2050, as of today, there would be significant risk that Shell may not meet this target.

This year, the victory goes to a Ford, in one day, the two winning drivers have, between them, covered over three thousand miles, the equivalent of Paris to Moscow and back. And in a year’s time, in June, the crowds will return for the next 24-hour endurance race at Le Mans.

Most of the 40 drivers who set off from Stockholm, Sweden, drive American cars, but Greta Molander has opted for a Swedish SAAB. There are eight competitors from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, embarking on a snowy route from Oslo, Norway to Denmark. A crowd of enthusiastic supporters cheer along the 20 drivers who set off from the Sicilian capital Palermo, Italy, including Prince Lenza di Trabia in his Alfa-Romeo. The British drivers reach Boulogne, France, around midday on the second day and then head east towards Lille, France.
Dawn on day three sees the drivers struggle with snowy conditions. Later, the first arrivals in Monte Carlo are greeted by torrential rain. As the drivers approach the finish line, they must pass an acceleration and braking test. With the first stage complete, the drivers can rest. In the morning the cars will be inspected and points deducted for mechanical failure. For the top 50 drivers, the final part of the rally involves a demanding six lap race around Monte Carlo.

In this short film, BYD Chief Investment Officer Li Qian explains the actions BYD is taking to reduce carbon emissions and why they choose to work with Shell as their decarbonisation journey moves from “what” to “how” to do it.
In this film, we look into the life cycle of the Green Apple Aphid, a common and destructive pest found wherever apple trees thrive. From egg-laying in autumn to nymphs emerging during spring’s “bud burst" and relentlessly feeding on tender growth. As they pierce tissues and suck sap, they leave their mark on leaves, causing curling and damage.
But aphids’ influence extends beyond feeding. They exude a sticky substance called “honey dew,” which encourages the growth of sooty molds. Despite their tiny size, the cumulative effect of aphids can harm trees irreparably.
