Movie production is notoriously expensive, especially with the rise of CGI and the proliferation of special effects. Danish animation company Rokoko is trying to democratize motion capture with its groundbreaking smart suit.
Rokoko’s system wants to replace the expensive cameras and huge studios Hollywood typically requires to create motion tracking. With just a suit and computer, this tech enables greater accessibility of body capture.
The suits consist of seven sensors and a head capture system that connects to wifi and allows users to apply body movements to any 3D character. As this tech becomes more affordable and ubiquitous, it opens the door for more creators to tell their stories.

The agricultural industry is no stranger to automation. Robotics was first introduced into the industry to help guide vehicles in the 1920s, and it’s now common for farmers to use GPS-guided planters, sprayers, and combines, not to mention the wide array of automated machines used elsewhere in the agricultural supply chain.
But there’s one job that has been prohibitively difficult for robots: picking soft fruit. It requires a delicate and dexterous touch, as well as the ability to maneuver around the plants so that the fruit can be accessed from the best angle.
The UK-based startup Dogtooth Technologies is developing robots with just such abilities. What’s more, the robots are able to gently pick berries at night and then deliver them to a chamber where the fruit can be inspected for defects. Freethink explores Dogtooth Technologies and the future of robot farming in this episode of Hard Reset.
As humanity embarks on ambitious endeavors to explore the far reaches of our solar system and beyond, traditional propulsion techniques may be too inefficient for long-duration space missions. That's one of the reasons why researchers at the Space Propulsion Laboratory at MIT have been developing an alternative propulsion system: electrospray electric thrusters.
These relatively small and energy-efficient thrusters have the potential to revolutionize deep space exploration, offering significant advantages over conventional propulsion systems. By utilizing electric propulsion, electrospray thrusters deliver a higher specific impulse, enabling spacecraft to travel farther with less propellant, or enabling space agencies to launch smaller spacecraft into space. This increased efficiency is crucial for tackling the challenges of deep space exploration, as it reduces the overall mass and cost of space missions while increasing their range and duration.
Electric propulsion could also prove to be a cheap and easy way to keep satellites in orbit above Earth indefinitely, potentially offering a way to clean up space debris.

What if we had real-time access to everything that’s happening across the globe? Planet Labs is launching tiny satellites into space en masse to photograph our Earth at all angles, multiple times each day.
This tech could lead to a shift in the way we monitor the health of the planet and the activities of the global population. Whereas we have previously had to wait weeks or months for photographs of specific parts of the planet, we could have instant insights into the land and environmental happenings on it.
So, how could these satellites affect maps, surveillance, and the future of our planet’s climate? The Hard Reset Podcast hosts sit down to discuss.

Muslims make up one of the most diverse religious communities in America, yet face some of the harshest stereotypes of any religious group. Many of these pervasive false narratives were created and magnified in a post-9/11 landscape.
Founded in 2010, Pillars Fund is working to amplify the leadership, narratives, and talents of Muslims. Pillars has distributed more than $9 million in grants to organizations to push back against harmful stereotypes while spotlighting the positive work being done by Muslim communities.
Pillars Fund and organizations like the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) are working to foster social change, cultivate arts, and deepen community for Muslims all over the U.S.

Advancements in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have enabled NASA and Skunk Works to iteratively model numerous aircraft designs. Their goal is to minimize shock waves, particularly those reaching the ground, by shaping the aircraft to reduce the intensity of the shock waves and strategically placing the largest shock waves on the aircraft's top. This would result in a ground-level noise impact similar to a car door slam as heard from across the street – something they call a 'sonic thud.'
If successful, the 'sonic thud' could persuade the FAA to lift the long-standing ban, potentially revolutionizing the commercial airline industry by reintroducing supersonic travel over land and dramatically reducing travel times. #NASA #LockheedMartin #Supersonic #Aircraft #Aviation #SR71 #CFD #ComputationalFluidDynamics #AircraftDesign #WindTunnels

If it feels like you need a car to get around the U.S., it's because our streets seem to prioritize the flow of traffic over people.
With pedestrian deaths at a 40-year high in 2023, it’s past time to reevaluate how we structure our sidewalks.
So, how can we make our streets less dangerous, more accessible, and reclaim the hours we would’ve been sitting in traffic? The Hard Reset Podcast hosts discuss some pretty brilliant ideas to take back our streets and build stronger, safer communities.

An estimated four billion people aren’t reliably connected to the internet. Those who do have wifi access can face exorbitant bills, especially in remote areas like Alaska, where wifi can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
Could putting the internet in space be the answer? Astranis is putting small satellites at Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO), about 100 times further away than companies like Starlink, enabling each satellite to cover a much larger area.
This tech could provide a more reliable, affordable connection for billions of people across the globe.

Gen-Z and Millennials are often typecast as apathetic generations, likely to bow out of the political process due to disinterest in an increasingly partisan and frustrating landscape.
But how true is this stereotype? Young people have been at the forefront of nearly every political movement in history, and getting them to show up to defend democracy in the 2024 election is crucial.
Organizations like Rise and Forward Montana (part of the Alliance For Youth Organizing network) are building youth civic engagement and political power to help make a big change this next election cycle by registering voters and fighting voter suppression. With big stake issues like environmental justice, income inequality, racial justice, and the future of our democracy on the line, these power building groups are ensuring that the younger generation’s voices are heard.

On October 18, SpaceX’s VP for build and reliability testified to a Senate subcommittee that regulators are taking too long to approve SpaceX’s launch requests. That’s just one of our top space stories from the week:
3️⃣ SpaceX has been launching rockets at a blistering rate of about once every four days in 2023, a record-breaking pace, and it hopes to increase its launch rate to once every 2 to 3 days in 2024.
None of this will happen unless US regulators can also step up their pace, according to William Gerstenmaier, SpaceX’s VP for build and reliability.
2️⃣ On October 17, Oxford University published new research, concluding that the source of the May 4, 2022 marsquake was tectonic, caused by the release of stress from within Mars’ crust. “One day, this information may help us to understand where it would be safe for humans to live on Mars and where you might want to avoid!”
1️⃣ On October 21, the Indian Space Research Organization completed the first in a series of test flights of the Gaganyaan spacecraft. The purpose of this test, dubbed the TV-D1 mission, was to test its escape module — a key safety feature. Gaganyaan aced the test, so the next step will be a 2024 launch in which an AI-powered humanoid named Vyommitra will be aboard to mimic the activities ISRO has planned for its real astronauts.
This is T-Minus, where we count down the biggest developments in space, from new rocket launches to discoveries that advance our understanding of the universe and our place in it. Vertical farming is a type of indoor farming where crops are grown in stacked layers, rather than spread out across large plots of land. These farms offer many benefits over traditional ones, including the prospect of better access to healthy foods in underserved communities.
Because vertical farms use LED lighting, their output isn’t subject to the natural elements that typically affect plant production such as adverse weather, insects, and seasons.
They’re better for the environment because they require less energy and put out less pollution, without a need for heavy machinery, pesticides, or fertilizers. Additionally, soil-less farming methods like aeroponics require just 10% of the amount of water consumed by outdoor farms.
Adopting these sustainable farming practices could lead to a monumental shift in how we produce food on Earth, and enable us to create a reliable food source beyond our planet.

Aaron Rasmussen, co-founder of MasterClass and CEO of outlier.org, discusses the critical concept of positioning for a successful business. He emphasizes that effectively conveying your business idea to people is as important as the idea itself.
Positioning involves distilling the complexity of your business into a single point that grabs people's attention. This process is crucial in a crowded marketplace to stand out. He outlines steps to develop a strong positioning: list features, narrow down to a single position, and find the right way to present it.
Aaron's experience with outlier.org demonstrates the power of pinpointing a compelling aspect – affordability due to eliminating commute costs – and using it to attract customers. Ultimately, positioning requires answering the question of why your business should exist. This video provides actionable insights for budding entrepreneurs to effectively position their business, and create a distinct identity in the market.

Analog computing could offer the same programmability, power, and efficiency as the digital standard, at 1000x less energy than digital.
But would switching from digital to analog change how we interact with our technology? Aspinity is tackling the major hurdles to optimize the future landscape of computing.

Can we make wind turbines out of wood? Yes - and they'd produce fewer CO2 emissions. This Swedish company is building the world's biggest wooden wind turbine out of lumber from sustainably managed forests. It will be 150 meters tall (about 492 feet) when completed. The best part? The wood can be reused in buildings after it's life as a wind turbine.
What is your attention worth? FreeWater is begging us to rethink our current economic model by passing out completely free water bottles that leverage advertising on their packaging to cover the cost.
This concept challenges the conventional notion of monetizing resources and advocates for a paradigm shift toward accessible goods. FreeWater is looking to expand into other products and even to become “the Whole Foods of free product.”
What if we could move away from scarcity-centered economics toward a more inclusive, socially beneficial framework, with water distribution serving as an initial stepping stone?
