Some very simple designs that use wine glasses and a teapot. this is more optics and visual design than anything. There are 2 levels to the design
A.Hardware - this is the agitator controlled by arduino system with electret microphone and the software that runs it. So many designs, and so many things that can be used. crystal wine glass, teapot, water glass, or any transparent vessel that can hold liquid.
B.Cocktail - The mix of liquid. So far the easy Water + oil is my fav. but you can add anything to change the physical/optical properties... glitter, gelatine powder, soap, etc..
Good for ambient music reactive decoration.
**TIP** take the lens off the led laser, it will give it a nice 90 degree or so beam, perfect for laser microscope effect at a short distance.

What is Arc-Script? Arc-script uses the “Arc-pen”, a writing tool invented to explore alternative approaches to how writing text could have evolved. ”It’s an imaginary writing system that evolved by using a tool with 2 points instead of 1”. What is the Arc-Pen? The arc-pen is basically a compass with fixed length. It could write in 2 main ways.
Carving : Using a compass with a sharp points on both sides, jab one end into the material and rotate the other to produce clean arcs and circles. Writing : A compass already has a writing tool attached to one side.
Basically a standard compass is half of each. An arc pen has only 2 sharp points or 2 pens. One major advantage of this writing tool is that lines are all perfect and you don’t need to train penmanship skills much at all. Simply put “everyone has near perfect handwriting without practice”. There are very little motor skills required, tremors and shakes don't matter as much either.Axial connector and power rack. Here we demo some Cscript writing system methodology. Using the word Hydrogen, I expect to over time go through the entire table of elements in order to demonstrate various letter combinations and strings in the Cscript Trinary writing system.
A 3d Volumetric Display method using a spinning corkscrew design and a laser array.
ok, ok, fast and loose with the term "hologram" here, but that seems to be the trend nowadays. I know for most of us, when we hear the word "hologram" we think "star trek holodeck" or at bare minimum "star wars hologram message". but that stuff is still far off so for now I have to be content with the simpler things hehe ;)
There are some crazy volumetric display that are starting to get close in principle, but they either have very complex spinning mechanics or lasers that could kill you unless you keep scale very small.
This is a VERY DIY build. the proper parts could easily be used and they are not expensive. with bearings and proper support the speed and frequency can go much higher obviously.
Hard to scale too big without absolute speed of outer screw blades getting too high.
Best to use plastic or paper for screw blades. you want the light to glow through as well.(the pixel should be visible form the side the laser hits and the back side as well for maximum visibility)
I used a 10cm diameter circle, with a 1 diameter circle cut out of the centre. the sliced open along the radius and wrapped around the chopstick.
to support, balance and reduce friction of the opposite end of the chopstick, there is a large hole with a spider web of thin steel wire. somewhat elastic, smooth and easily adjustable. fine for prototype, kinda crappy but if this works, then the right parts will definitely work ;)
there is an aligned array of lasers, connected to arduino and timed on and off to draw pixels in the correct locations.
Cycle is sensed by a laser pointed through the near middle of the screw and an infrared sensor receiving it. the red laser is just barely clear enough of an infrared signal to pick up reliably (except in sunlight ;)). if you look at the chopstick from the top there is an area where the perimeter caves in and and the radius shortens drastically then come back up. the laser passes through this region so it pulses with the spin cycle.
1 X Embedded System (rasp, cubie, etc..) 1 X MCU (3X pins per LED strip + a few extra) 1 X high speed webcam with manual exposure control (# led strips * 3) X Power transistors LED strips Power Supply
This is basically just a way of removing LED wall / Camera Feedback noise.
an led is blinked near the camera so as to allow a simple read per scan line. each scan line of the camera can be identified as being "led on" or "led off". By blinking the led in sync with the LED wall the scan lines contaminated by the LED wall lights can be removed.
This set up simply uses opencv to read rectangular sections, find the changing pixels, extract their color, and serial send it over to the arduino. The arduino changes the color of each LED strip accordingly, fading between commands.
Software still needs some tweaking, but i plan to work on more effects so i am not 100% sure on the settings and magic numbers I wanna use yet.
LED PWM is annoying. not linear. My LED colors are still off.
Really wanna get a better camera so I can increase frequency. The LED wall flickers in a camera.. in real life its just barely solid. can't see any flicker.. but can kinda "feel it".
Simply using different camera position and mapped regions allows for different styles of interaction.
Would work great in a bar/club I think. I find it works best for dancing if the camera is facing the user. so in this setup its best if you face the wall and dance. In a real world setup probably want to move the camera forward and turn it around.. that way you can dance in front of the screen facing outwards.. would make a nice dynamic backdrop behind a dancer.
This is the first test of a wearable tech concept. As pointed out by some nice people at OMG (Omaha Maker Group.. it was actually David there who suggested I try out sensory augmentation, awesome idea :) ) it is more than just a toy and possible tool for the deaf, with so many people tuned out wearing headphones.. it might actually be useful to hearing-able people too hehe ;)
Just six mics mounted in the 6 air holes of the hat (would work better if the were at the base of the hat but there are already holes there so I just used them for now.. results not too bad).
The 6 signals are first balanced relative to each other, and then the six leds are controlled corresponding to the relative amplitude of each respective mic.
I originally planned to make a circle of leds on the underside of the lid, but that seemed too hard to read. I found that if you place the LEDs well you can actually make the rear 2 microphone LEDs feel somewhat behind you in your peripheral vision so a semicircle curve on the lid rim can actually almost feel like a closed in circle... it almost feels as though you can "see behind you")
Kinda wanna try it with ARM,Camera and opencv. but with the camera moving around so wildly i doubt it will be very easy.. would be cool to be able to "see motion behind you".. but unfortunately that’s gonna be really hard.. (unless i can strap the persons head to a lamppost or something lol)

x=number bars
x X small Rolliing pumps x X power transistors x X small tubes (transparent best) x X lasers 1 X audio amp circuit Some resistors, caps, inductors, etc.. for signal filtering.
A simple but very fun physical effect that is easy to achieve with pure circuitry.
An audio signal (or any analog signal) is fed through power transistors to control rolling pumps which pump air into the bottom of small tubes with water.
Effects depend on tube width, height, water level, and air flow. Effects can range from rising bubbles, to rising "water bars".
Using various signal filters many bars could run on the same input but all produce different effects (on top of the varying effect should their physical attributes also vary)
Would be cool to use micro controller and try to control the effects, like "drawing".. but there might be too much physical "pseudo randomness" .. will test later.
Very Very simple way to produce a laser show. Attach tubes to speaker, point up (or at upwards angle), mount lasers pointing straight up through tube. add water in tube, turn on speaker.. voila.
I used kitchen plastic wrap to create a transparent bottom to the tube. just glue it on and make sure watertight.
It is similar to those tech-art installations where they "fill a speaker with water" and make the water resonate to the audio signal.
Here just making lots of little vibrating chambers instead of one big one.
Varying physical properties of tube and liquid will vary the effect.
Just read the mic and make the mouse react to the signal in various ways and clicks.
can try drawing the whole screen. but I found that it was much more fun if I also use a mouse and move it around as well.
best to first code it to stay within a certain range(keeps track of its relative xy and stays within certain bounds). that way when you move the mouse it effectively moves the active area around.
Then just open up some drawing software and go for it. search the haystack of effects for needles ;)
The main idea is that you can play music, and the cursor will dance with the music. (right now just amplitude) this creates a pseudo random pattern that can often be good for graphics design (eg texturing). Its not only like embedding a part of the designers experience into the art, the artist can also "dance along with it" and even predict / plan how to move based on upcoming patterns in the music.
Could be fun in a million other ways to. any kind of input could be used, not just sound. could also just make it all programmable patterns with no sensing, but that's less fun(perhaps more functional) and can be done in pure software more easily ;)

a wearable led bracelet with an attached sensor that is placed on the index finger.
It allows the bracelet to not only react to the dancers/performers arm motions, but they can also micro-control it with the finger even when not moving the bracelet around in space.
Fun and easy, can be miniaturized into a commercial quality design, and is a great DIY project for learning arduino.
I know there are tons of LED staffs that can even draw persistence of vision graphics. This one does not use an accelerometer(yet), just electret microphones.
It can be done using a purchased led strip, but depending on dimensions custom might be better. For this one I tapered led density, low in middle high in ends, because the ends move faster so this helps it the light fill more evenly when spinning fast.
Electret microphone picks up sound and motion(well it picks up the "whoosh" sound of the motion anyway)
GREAT project for getting practice with sensor signal processing
(can easily be reduced to everything inside tube but for prototype testing and r&d I highly recommend an arduino on the outside at first ;) )
Some very simple designs that use wine glasses and a teapot. this is more optics and visual design than anything.
