Nobodys Favorite: Revisiting The 1980s Alfa Romeo Spider Roadster Life 2023-06-11 | Presented in 1966 and produced until 1993, the classic Spider enjoyed the longest production run in Alfa Romeo's history, during which the model changed remarkably little. But if you ask people about their favourite Alfa Spider, hardly anyone will mention the 1980s models.Yet, due to these Spiders being those that were current when I was little, or probably due to the widespread 1980s influences that pervade pop culture lately, I'm finding myself increasingly drawn to these less-regarded Spiders.The Spider "Aerodinamica" was presented in March 1983 at the Geneva Motor Show, but the idea behind the new Spider's more aggressive appearance originated from a prototype presented by Pininfarina nine years prior, at the 1974 Barcelona Motor Show.With their upper surface sporting a satin aluminium finish, the Spider's new plastic bumpers added 150mm to the car's length. The tail panel was painted black on all models and complemented by a chunky plastic spoiler and larger taillight clusters. The firm needed new models quickly, and precedence was given to the smaller Beta, which came out in 1972 and was intended as Lancia's volume seller for the Seventies. #lancia #classiccars #history Launched in 1976, the Gamma was to be the brand's new flagship, replacing the Flavia 2000 sedan and coupè, whose production ended two years prior.The styling for both sedan and coupè versions of the Gamma was done by famed design house Pininfarina, whose relationship with Lancia went back to the 1930s. And it's really something special.It all started with a Fiat X1/9, albeit a rather unique one.That's because it was the fortuitous discovery and subsequent restoration of the X1/9 Group 4 prototype he raced with Clay Regazzoni in the 1974 Giro D'Italia that spurred Gino Macaluso (European Rally Champion in 1972 with Raffaele Pinto and the Fiat 124 Abarth, later a successful entrepreneur in the horology sector) to build over the years an outstanding collection including the most important rally cars of all time. Following his death in 2010, his family took care of the collection and, in 2018, established in his memory the "Fondazione Gino Macaluso Per L'Auto Storica" to spread the culture of vintage racing and sports cars and pay tribute to those who gave their contribution to motorsport.All but one of the cars in the exhibition belong to the Foundation and are genuine racers painstakingly restored to their "works" specification. Limaplas was founded a year earlier by Frenchman Michel Liprandi, an engineer with significant experience in fiberglass bodies, and the Italian entrepreneur Giovanni Mandelli. #classiccars #history While undeniably attractive, the LMX's butch, muscular lines do appear somewhat derivative, and the car has more than a hint of a period American pony car to it.The design of the LMX Sirex has often been attributed to the late Franco Scaglione, one of Italy's greatest automobile designers who, in the period, worked as a freelancer.
