After all, CAD skills are some of the highest impact, highest return-on-investment skills you can invest in as a maker. Unfortunately, I can't justify spending the time to model things I don't actually need just for practice. So for this reason, my learning method of choice is to actually design and build the things that I actually need for actual projects. (You know me, I LOVE functional 3d prints)So lately, I've been making an effort to solve more of my problems using CAD. Sometimes, this means designing things in CAD and then using other tools like lasers or power tools to build them, but more often than not, this means bringing 3D Printing into the mix, to design completely custom, one-off functional 3d prints to my particular problems.In this video, I'm going to take you through 7 different solutions that I've recently designed and 3d printed for some of my own real-world problems. I'll share with you how I - someone who is NOT trained as an engineer - approached the problems, and then turned them into awesome 3d prints. And while I'm not going to bore you with a CAD tutorial on Onshape tutorial for each thing I modeled, I will share some of the cool cad tricks and tips I learned and used along the way both to design and to print these solutions... in a way that is CAD software agnostic... so that you can try them on your own projects, too. My unofficial slogan is "We don't buy sh*t... We build sh*t... and occasionally fish it out of the trash." Half the fun in 3D printed products is making them yourself, to your own spec, size, and colors, at home. If I'm spending $200 on shoes, I prefer ones with technologies I can't 3D Print, like soft fabrics and rubber. An Open Letter to the 3D Printing Community The Next Layer 2024-07-18 | I'm pretty sure this video is going to bomb, but I just can't keep silent anymore. I've been stewing on this for a couple weeks at this point, and I honestly just need to get it off of my chest. (There is no sponsor for this video... go support your favorite open source project!)One of the most incredible things about the 3D printing community, without a doubt, is the collaborative, open source nature. It's mind-blowing, actually, that in our little corner of the internet, people contribute so much of their hard work and talent towards creating things that all of us can use and enjoy. I absolutely love it. But with that said, as I've gone deeper into this community, I've come to notice what I believe to be a major issue that is holding back our beloved little community. The people at the forefront - the ones moving us forward with true innovations that the rest of the industry later adopts (i.e. klipper, mainsail, fluidd, orcaslicer, the ercf / enraged rabbit carrot feeder v2, freecad, stealthchanger, the voron tool changer, tradrack, type things) - are not being compensated for their work. I wrote this from the heart, and know that I was just as guilty as any of us. But, the more I thought about it, the more I realized we need to change it.
