The song already contains the melody and chords, the ‘make love not war’ refrain and the ‘love is the answer’ chorus. This very short fragment of footage was found amongst other home video materials whilst conducting a deep search in the archives for content for the MIND GAMES ULTIMATE COLLECTION Box Set audio and book, along with the original (also never-seen-before) lyrics for the song.John Lennon: vocal , upright piano.Tittenhurst Park, Ascot, February 1970.Part Two: John is in the studio at Record Plant on 4 Aug 1973, with Yoko and all the musicians, where he recorded seven takes of ‘Mind Games’. So I thought now if I did that, and seeing as how I’ve never done it before and they’ve all got preconceived ideas about what I am, I thought, ‘ha ha!’ I’ll put it on a canvas, so that makes it ‘art’. So I put it on a big white round canvas and just had ‘You Are Here’ that I’d written on it. And the point of the show was people went through various things to get to the canvas and then they reacted to it. The whole point of the show was: that was the art. A ‘mind’ guerilla – a conceptual guerilla. It was originally called ‘Make Love Not War’.Yoko: John was trying to convey the message that we all play mind games. But if we can play mind games, why not make a positive future with it – to play a positive mind game? ‘Mind Games’ is such an incredibly strong song. At the time, people didn’t quite get the message because this was before its time. Now, people would understand it. Nutopia is a conceptual nation that exists only in your mind, without borders, founded on Love and open to everyone. The national flag is a white flag of Surrender. It is an art piece dedicated to promoting the ideas of Peace and Love that were made famous by the song 'Imagine'. John & Yoko announce the Declaration of Nutopia at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, 42 W44th St, New York, 2 April 1973. Yoko: In 1973 in New York City, John and I invited the press to announce the founding of a conceptual country called Nutopia. Anybody could be a citizen of this country. Citizens were automatically the country’s ambassadors. The country’s body was the airfield of our joint thoughts. Its constitution was our love, and its spirit our dreams. We produced a white handkerchief from our pockets and said, “This is a flag to Surrender to Peace.” Not 'Fight for Peace’, but 'Surrender to Peace’ was the important bit. John: It’s a conceptual country. It has no land, there’s nothing to fight for, there’s no boundaries, there’s no lines to be drawn, no passports, only people. We’ve got a flag, but there are no laws. All the people of Nutopia are ambassadors. And citizenship is available by declaring your awareness of Nutopia. Once you say it, that’s it. The flag means surrender and submission and also you can blow your nose on it. (laughs) Yoko: We wished that one day we would take the flag to the United Nations and place it alongside the other flags, as Nutopia was just another concept, such as France, the United States and the Soviet Union. It was not a concept founded to threaten any other. John had said that we were all ambassadors of Nutopia. And so we are. When you come to our apartment, you’ll see that there is a gold plaque on the kitchen door that says 'Nutopian Embassy'. John put it there. Strangely enough, now friends just like to come in from that door, and not the front door. It seems the plaque made the kitchen door our front door. John: Nutopia was Yoko’s trip. I agree with her, so I wanted to do it as another John and Yoko event. We mean it. It’s not naive or anything like that. It’ll happen when it happens. If you say it enough, it’ll happen. If you don’t say it, it won’t. We do it on impulse or instinct, you know. We try and use our instincts, especially for these kind of things which we call 'Mind Games'. First of all, we put the thought out. And then we’ll follow it through to see... Do you think that you'd be published were you not a Beatle? John: I could probably get published but, you know, I wouldn't sell as many. I mean, they publish a lot of rubbish anyway. But I wouldn't sell. Q: Do you think you've got a built-in advantage in being a Beatle? I mean, are you glad about this, or would you rather have earned the reputation as a writer in your own right? John: No, I mean, I never thought of it. If I hadn't been a Beatle I just wouldn't have thought of having the stuff published because I would've been crawling around, broke, and just writing it and throwing it away. I might've been a Beat poet (laughs).Q: How did it come about that you weren't a Beat poet and that your first book was published? John: Well, some American who shall remain nameless, who's called Michael Brown, I showed him the stuff and he took it to the publisher, and they published it. That was it. Q: Did you ever think of publishing it under a pseudonym, not as John Lennon? John: I thought of that but what's the use? Because he took it to the publisher first without telling them who it was just to see if they would've published it. That answers your first question as well. Q: It does indeed, yes. Living in, you know, the butterfly world of Pop as a Beatle, do you find that this undermines people's serious acceptance of you as a writer? John: It does. But I didn't really expect them to take me seriously, so, you know, there's nothing to say about that. They do take it more seriously than I thought, so that's good enough for me. Q: Indeed. I mean, the first book was reviewed in the posh Sunday (paper)s and on the other side of the fence your music is recorded by people like Ella Fitzgerald. Now this is serious recognition in both areas. Which do you find more satisfying? John: Well er, the book, really. It means more to other people that Ella Fitzgerald recorded one of our tunes than it does to us, because the tune is still something that Paul and I have written. So we still have the same faith in it. It just gives other people more faith in the tune. Q: This book is very similar to the first in being bits and pieces of poems, and bits of prose. Do you think you'd ever want anything longer? A novel, for example. John: Well, I tried writing... The longest thing I've written is in this book. It's one about Sherlock Holmes, and it seemed like a novel to me but it turned out to be six pages (smiles). But I don't think I could... I couldn't do it, you know. I get fed-up. And I wrote so many characters in, I forgot who they were. Q: This happens to other writers, too. JOHN: (smiles) "Hmmm. Other writers! Good. Q: The Pop business is a young man's world. It seems to have an ever increasingly young audience. Do you think that perhaps writing a book like this, and writing at all, perhaps might be an unconscious attempt to win recognition in the adult world? John: No, because I started all this writing long before I was a Pop artist, or even a Beatle, or before I had a guitar. So it's nothing to do with that. The guitars came second. Second.Q: And which comes first? John: Well, now the guitars come first. because this is still a hobby, which it always has been. Q: You're going on doing it, are you? John: I'll go on doing it. Q: Have you written anything else? Is anythng else coming off of this? John: Well, uhh, I don't get much time. If I had more time I'd probably write more.

We wrote a lot there. It was an old lick that I had around a long time but I again changed the lyrics. I like the track because it sounds good but it didn’t get much attention, so it’s a personal track that I like the sound of. The guitars are good and the voice sounds nice and, you know, and it says whatever it says. George does a sharp solo with his steel finger (he’s not to proud of it - but I like it). It’s about politicians, newspaper men and all the hypocrites of the world. And male chauvinists, it’s about them too. I think that music reflects the state that the society is in. There is nothing to hide. Not really. I mean, we all like to shit in private and we certainly have things we prefer to do in private, privately. But in general what is there to hide? I mean, what is the big secret?I think it’s like this whole game of the press. When the whole drug thing came out about the Beatles, what actually happened was the press cornered Paul one day with the TV cameras and all the press and asked him, “have you taken LSD?” And he said “yes”. And they said, “don’t you think that you have a responsibility to society?” And he said, “yes I do, and so do you, so please don’t publish this or print it.” And they had it on every newscast that night with him saying, “please dont publish it.” Now what the hypocrisy of the press is like, what I was saying about the News Of The World is they’re always going on about other people’s responsibilities and pop stars selling sex to people when they’re the ones keeping the whole mill rolling. They have as much responsibility as us so called ‘stars’ and that was a prime example. There was a famous picture of me in one of the Beatle Books and it said, ‘No phoney politician is ever going to get through to me.” That still stands, although I dabbled in so called “politics” in the late 60’s and 70’s. More out of guilt for being rich and guilty, thinking that maybe perhaps love and peace isn’t enough, that to have to go and get shot or something, or get punched in the face, to prove I’m one of the people.I think our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. And I think that’s what I sussed when I was 16 and 12, way down the line. But I expressed it differently all through my life. I think we’re being run by maniacs for maniacal ends. If anybody can put on paper what our government and the American government etcetera and the Russian, Chinese - what they are actually trying to do, and what they think they’re doing, I’d be very pleased to know what they think they’re doing. I think they’re all insane but I’m liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That’s what’s insane about it. Somebody comes along with a good piece of truth and instead of the truth being looked at, they look at the person that brought it. It’s like when the bad news comes, they shoot the messenger. When the good news comes, they worship the messenger and they don’t listen to the message - whether it be Christianity, Mohammadism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Marxism, Maoism, everything. It’s always about the person and never about what they said. My function in society is to be an artist. The artist’s function is to be as true to himself (and therefore the people he communicates with through his art) as he can, and survive. Art is a functional part of society. If you don’t have artists, you don’t have society. We’re not some kind of decadent strip show that appears on the side. We’re as important as prime ministers or policemen.Register to Vote. If you register to vote, it doesn’t mean you have to vote. At least you have it. And then if there’s somebody around that you can believe in, you’ve got that vote. But if you don’t register and it comes, and you wanna do something, you’ve missed it. Because there’s one inch in which we breathe differently between the two parties. It might be your last day – you might get run over by a car.I go through despair and hopefulness. I try and hang on to the hopeful bit. Otherwise, there’s just no point at all. I’m saying, ‘Hold on, John, it’s going to be alright’. Otherwise, I won’t hold on.I think complete happiness is when you are a bit of electricity, when you’ve made the absolute. And then the concept of what we think of happiness, of just being, which is what happiness will be for all of us – is not to. And I’ve had that through meditation. Just a state where you are not aware of anything. So there you’ll be and that’s complete happiness. You just are. And that is the peace we’re looking for – is just to be. And nothing affects you, and you affect nothing, literally. You just are. The happiest people are the people that are ‘being’ more times a week than anybody else. And it’s just down to that.When you are just ‘being’, there’s nothing hassling you, or not hassling, or anything. And that’s it. And you get it writing, and you can get it daydreaming, or I remember having it as a kid on a desk, or in the grass in the sun, just for a moment.I believe that meditation is a kind of ‘found truth’. Don’t run on this path but walk on it. The only way is to recover space in your mind. All you need is mind control. You have nothing to lose to try it. It will not make you crazy, you don’t have to be more smart to do it. Even when you’re meditating and doing these things with the whole expressed purpose of getting into that state, you’ve got to practise it like you’d practise anything to stop being frightened when you get to the different levels you get to on meditation – you get to a plane thing and whoop! And you’re fighting it all the time! A whole time is spent to stop being frightened of nothing.I think the world is on a trip. As humans, what we’re doing, we’ve been the tribal bit, childlike. And then we’re suddenly becoming aware of something and becoming self-conscious and going through all the hassles you go through being self-conscious, where you’re so self-conscious you can’t do anything. And then to come out of that is the next stage, which I think we’re going into, of being self-conscious but realizing that you can handle it. And that’s the breakthrough. We’ve become too self-conscious of it and now we’ve got to put it in perspective. And we can have cars and tellies and that, but still get back to the spiritual bit, which is the bit we’ve missed out on. Becoming un-self-conscious.I had some great experiences in India because I was meditating eight hours a day. It was the biggest trip I’ve ever had in my life. You just sit there and let your mind go. It doesn’t matter what you’re thinking about, just let it go. And then you introduce the mantra, the vibration, to take over from the thought. You don’t will it or use your will power. There’s none of this sitting in the lotus position or standing on your head. You just do it as long as you like.Yoko: Love is the energy that is really moving the whole world. Love is the creative energy and prayer is the poor man’s weapon. With prayer and love we can really create the world. Please send out the strongest energy of love, peace and belief to the world. Out now → johnlennon.lnk.to/PlasticOnoBand2021Before famously recording their legendary pacifist anthem “Give Peace A Chance” at their Bed-In for Peace at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal on 31 May 1969, John Lennon & Yoko Ono rehearsed an early version of the song while at the Sheraton Oceanus Hotel in the Bahamas just days before, on 25 May. The performance, which was captured by the Lennon's film cameraman Nic Knowland and sound recordist Mike Lax, has never been released until now and is the earliest known recording of the song. The video features John humorously ad-libbing lyrics for the verses before being joined by Yoko for the memorable chorus that became an anti-war anthem for a generation and which remains an enduring protest song more than 50 years later. Originally set for New York, the second Bed-In was relocated to the Bahamas after John & Yoko were denied entrance into the U.S. because of John's 1968 cannabis conviction. However, due to the layout of the hotel and the sweltering Bahamian heat, the couple flew to Toronto the following day and eventually settled in Montreal, chosen for its close proximity to New York and the American press, which they were hoping to use to get the attention of President Nixon. The couple holed up in the hotel for a week where they gave unlimited access and endless interviews, in order that their extended honeymoon serve as a “commercial for peace.” The event culminated with the recording of John’s first solo single and the first to be credited to the Plastic Ono Band, “Give Peace A Chance.” Surrounded by fans, Hare Krishnas and having spent the week with a host of notable friends and celebrities like LSD advocate Timothy Leary, singer Petula Clark, disc jockey Murray The K, comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory and comedian Tommy Smothers, who accompanied on acoustic guitar, John and Yoko performed the song in bed, dressed in their pyjamas and helped provide the soundtrack to a revolution. Released just a month later in July 1969, backed with Yoko’s “Remember Love,” recorded that same night after their guests had left, the single reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 14 in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100, giving John his first hit outside of The Beatles. Although originally credited to Lennon-McCartney due to his publishing agreemeent with Paul, John later revealed the song was written by him and Yoko and that she should have received the co-writing credit. LOOK AT ME. (Ultimate Mix, 2021) - John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (4K Official Music Video) johnlennon 2021-04-01 | On 9th June 1968, at John’s home ‘Kenwood’ in Weybridge, Surrey, John & Yoko began a collaborative period of creative film-making that would end up lasting four years, beginning with two films called ‘Film No. 5’ (‘Smile’) (conceived by Yoko) and ‘Two Virgins’ (conceived by John & Yoko) that would premiere at the Chicago Film Festival later that year. The filming involved specialist high-speed 16mm cameras (in those days mainly used for filming scientific experiments) operated by William Wareing and his team.For ‘Film No. 5’ (‘Smile’), the magic of John smiling is captured in ultra slow motion (with the film running through the camera at ultra high-speed), and for ‘Two Virgins’, they filmed with a different high-speed camera and used a trick that John had employed when filming with his Standard 8 cameras of rewinding all the film and running it through the camera a second time, to double expose the negative.
