Ben KiriatyThis is a screen recording of my production process. Nothing was edited and honestly I don't really know why I'm posting this but if you're a studio creature you might enjoy watching this.
I recorded a sequence using the 0-coast and a Korg SQ-1. Then I opened the usual 909 kit and just went from there without really planning anything...

benki on Instagram: instagram.com/benki._benki Studio Jam 15/09/21Ben Kiriaty2021-09-17 | This is by no means a proper "benki live performance" although it is one, in a way, but this is just me getting comfortable with the system again for the 10th time, after making a few big changes to it. 'm yet to know if they are really improvements or bad choices. :)
I may make a video in the future about the current setup. For those of you who have been following, and have a general idea of what's doing what, these are the changes: - Varigate 8+ has been replaced by the Erica Drum Sequencer. - Monsoon has been replaced by Mutable Instruments Beads. - The "Clean Voice", which was an Odessa paired with a Natural Gate, is now a Rings. Still getting to know it's sweet spots for this kind of music. - Verbos Lead: minor changes "around it" (sequencing, transposition etc..) - Added an Erica Pico Drums for Hats, Shakers etc.. - Changed filters after BIA and after LIP, now they respond completely different to envelopes and CV. I'm suing a uJove in bandpass mode on LIP as it helps to limit the amount of space it takes in the mix, frequency wise. It's also easier and "smarter" to bring it in and out of the mix by turning the filter all the way up and essentially fading the sound away rather than muting or attenuating it.
There was no plan or real structure in this performance, because it was just me playing to myself, getting to know the modules etc... Feel free to skip the boring parts.benki - How I Play - Setup Update 2Ben Kiriaty2021-06-08 | This video follows "Techno Stream 4" where I made a few changes to the rack, which I go about in detail here. Feel free to ask questions in the comments!
** I forgot to show how Mimetic Digitalis controls Odessa's "Partials" parameter (the big black knob in the middle) through Lapsus Os' channel 3, that's in charge of moving the timbres of the voices (as opposed to channel 2, which modulates decays for example). That gives another layer of tonal variety on top of what's already possible. I didn't make use of it for some reason here but it adds all the movement that you need. Just generate some movement in Mimetic Digitalis and slide a fader in Lapsus Os that acts as an attenuator in this case.
*** Sometimes you'll see me looking for the right notes and sounds before actually using them, or opening a filter to hear what's playing. This is not exactly how it happens during a live performance as I cue the next sound on a pair of headphones before bringing it in. Also, it's kinda hard to show you what I do without letting you hear what I hear. :)

Questions are welcome in the comment section. I have a few banks of sequences that I use for different vibes but recalling a sound on this thing is impossible. it started pretty chill, then it went all weird because I wasn't sure where to take it, then during the 2nd hour it started sounding more to my taste. It takes a while to get used to new patches. cables are not where you're used to, modules, knobs, it's like playing a new instrument. There will be "setup update" video (it will be #2) which looks at this patch in detail. A link will be pasted here too.

benki on Facebook: facebook.com/benki.officialbenki - How I Play - Setup Update 1Ben Kiriaty2021-04-22 | This video shows a few of the changes made to the system lately, for it to be more efficient and allow to play a wider variety of music while still being easy to control. Since I'm still looking for the perfect balance and I keep making changes, I might be making a video here and there, walking you through the "new features" of the system, to keep you updated give you new ways to patch your synth, that even if they won'y work well for me, they might be perfect for you.
I apologize in advance for any lack of fluidity in the video, I'm by no means a Pro Youtuber and this was more on the spontaneous side. There's a lot of talking in between things about useful stuff that led me to each decision but feel free to skip around.

Bass: Joranalogue Full Output - Belgrad (modulated by Quadrax - triggered by Qubit Pulsar)
Pluck, Bass and Lead are mixed in X-Pan which goes into Noise Engineering Imitor Versio Delay.
Granular Particles: Joranalogue Even Output (2 octaves above Full) - Natural Gate (1/16th triggers by Doepfer A-155 Sequencer) - Monsoon (modulated by Batumi smooth random outputs)
Drums: (Sequenced by Malekko Varigate 8+) Erica Kick Erica Clap Erica Cymbals (for the ride) Metallic Percussion: Noise Engineering BIA into Tiptop Audio Forbidden Planet BP Filter. (Modulated by Mimetic Digitalis)
Pitch CV generation: Random Semitone Output. (Malekko Voltage Block) Random Octave Output. (Malekko Voltage Block) Simple 8 Step Pitch Sequence. (Doepfer A-155) The 3 are summed together in a precision adder, then melted and fed into 2 quantizers (Doepfer A-156). One gets triggered at 1/16th notes, and that drives the Pluck voice. The other one gets triggered every bar. it has a trigger output that triggers a Quadrax envelope if there's a change in pitch. That drives the Lead Voice. That same CV was multed and manipulated a bit to create the Bass voice, making sure the range wouldn't clash with the lead voice (which runs off the same CV). Bass and Granular Particles voices come from the same oscillator (Described above) so no further cv processing/multing etc was necessary.
If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments :)Forms by benki. The Noise Engineering Sample Pack.Ben Kiriaty2021-02-04 | This is a collaboration with Noise Engineering in which I used their oscillators drum voices and DSP modules to create all the sounds you hear on this video.
The goal was to create a sonic language, a universe, a playground in which you can act freely and carelessly, dragging a bunch of sounds from each folder that would communicate with each other. The result was this collection of sounds that were carefully selected and sorted into 4 categories. I preferred cutting down the file count and dismissing many of the potential samples, to further refine the selection, or else it wouldn’t offer anything new and different than what’s already out there. It does get much easier using NE sources though, that’s for sure. :)
All sound sources are Noise Engineering modules including Basimilus Iteritas Alter, Cursus Iteritas, Loquelic Iteritas Percido, and were processed through a fine selection of distortion modules, as well as the amazing Imitor Versio (much more than) Delay Module. Added some secret benki sauce, and there you have it!

Hope you like it. In these video I focused on 2 voices that form the lows and mids in the music. One is a LIP paired with a uJove filter by Plum Audio, and the other one is a Michigan Synth Works SY0.5, which is a drum module based on the amazing Pearl Syncussion vintage drum machine.

If you ran across this video by mistake then just know my name is Ben, I produce mostly techno under the name “benki”, I’m a classically trained musician, that got into live electronic music a few years ago and I’ve been building this setup for like 2 years, and documenting the process on social media every once in a while, if i don’t forget to do so, but lately, since we all found ourselves at home with a lot of free time in our hands, I thought why not show you what i do, but like, really, show you. not just turn knobs.
The whole point of this project is, first, to show you that live modular systems are easy to understand, because that’s what a musical instrument should be, but they can be as simple or complex as you want, depending on what you’re trying to use them for. Also, to give you new patch ideas that I’ve come up with while planning this system to make it easier to play, which is the most time consuming part of the process, but also the most rewarding, because limitations force you to solve problems, which is fun in most cases. :)
Each of the Videos in this series focuses on a different part of the rack, and explain how things are patched and how patching them that way, helps me improvise and play more naturally.

Hope you enjoy. :)
