I've built a second version of the trapdoor/hook system prototype. I improved the geometry of the lever to eliminate the risk of stuck marbles when they come directly after each other. In order to do this, I created an impossible edge case and build the mechanism around it. If it's designed to handle the impossible, it can also handle 10.000.000 Marbles ;) So I guess you can remove this point from the original sketch.
The only other failure mode I can think of would be the marbles not applying enough torque to move the lever. But it barely affects them, even if I'm mean and take all their kinetic energy. By the way, with the new geometry there is no movement of the top marble at all. Here is another function test. The behaviour is essentially the same as the first version. The throughput has also remained really good, even when you test it with a whole stack.
Thank you for looking at this idea and also for all the kind feedback on the first prototype.
