Making a film on a glacier is harder than you think

EPISODE 2 of 2: Filmmaker Robin Danehav tackles a brutal 1000m ascent to Björlings Glacier, filming the deployment of a 200 m² wool blanket for stoppin the melt, then limps 19 km back—capturing raw truth for his documentary on grassroots climate action.

Episode 1 ended with me—Robin Danehav—reaching Kebnekaise Mountain Station after a 1 298 km drive and a 19 km hike. Episode 2 picks up the next morning: camera batteries full, legs already shaky. My job today is to capture the moment a team of volunteers hauls a 200 sqm wool sheet onto Björlings Glacier. The blanket will spend the summer shielding that ice patch, turning invisible melt into a vivid, year-by-year visual for anyone who doubts climate change.

What looks like a carefree summer hike is actually Day 1 of Glaciärfilten, an ambitious climate-manifestation where volunteers haul giant wool blankets up Björlings Glacier each year to slow its melt and visualise the pace of global warming. In this vlog episode, Swedish filmmaker Robin Danehav invites you into the raw, often messy reality behind his upcoming feature documentary about the project.

Did we finally fix our audio problem? Canon C70 + Hollyland Lark

Robin Danehav 2025-06-17 | H.265 on the Canon C70 only gives us 16-bit sound, but our Hollyland wireless mics output 24-bit. So in this episode we ditch H.265, move to the camera’s middle XF-AVC codec, and head outside to see if the new 24-bit workflow really fixes the clipping that’s haunted every take so far.

Step inside the Kamerastore studio in Tampere, Finland, as Juho Leppänen uncover and digitize the oldest photograph in his family—an 1800s silver-coated tintype of his great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather. This three-minute short reveals the delicate process of digitising a 200-year-old metal plate, the lighting tricks needed to tame its mirror-like surface, and the emotional jolt of seeing “one chemical reaction away” from an ancestor who posed in the 1870s.

Hauling 250kg of wool to a glacier in ARCTIC conditions. But why?

This is an early glimpse of "Glaciärfilten" — a visual climate project where a Swedish glacier is being covered with wool blankets to slow down the melt.

It might sound strange, but it works. In 2023, this method helped preserve up to 1.5 meters of glacier ice. The blankets are made from 100% Swedish wool that would otherwise go to waste — turning discarded natural material into a tool for climate action.

🎥 We're currently creating a full-length documentary about this groundbreaking initiative. This short film is a sneak peek to help raise awareness and funding as the project grows.

In late June we're going back up again for the next stage of the project where we continue making this film. And then it all finishes in September when we come up again for the last part - removing the wool and witness the result.

What happens when a digital-native filmmaker buys their first analog camera—with one of Europe’s top film nerds as their guide?
This is the behind-the-scenes of Framing Time, but it’s also the story of how I went from knowing nothing about analog photography to buying my first real film camera—guided by Juho Leppänen and the crew at Camera Rescue in Finland.

We travel by ferry to Tampere, navigate thousands of pieces of vintage gear, and in the middle of filming a documentary… I suddenly find myself on the other side of the lens. I went to Finland to learn analog photography, and it changed everything.

It's all due to a mix of factors, primarily driven by climate change. In this video, we dive into the reasons why the cost of coffee is surging and how environmental challenges, such as droughts in key coffee-producing countries, are affecting your daily cup of coffee. Before going to Uganda last year to make this documentary, Isak Friberg and I got in contact with local filmmaker Deo. He decided to join us during this week filming for the BTS film, just to get the experience. Check out his Youtube here: @deokuset

We ended up becoming really good friends and I learned about the struggles of being a filmmaker in Uganda. Gear is super expensive and hard to come by. If a camera costs 2000 USD and an average client can pay 50 USD for a job, the equation doesn't really match.

But Deo's dream is not only to make more money, he wants to share the stories of real people in his beautiful country.

When it was time to go, I realized that if my purpose in doing this work is to spread positive stories in the world - helping Deo get off the ground is the single biggest impact I can make. So I left him the lighting equipment that brought. I signed up a year of Squarespace for him (link in a comment) but I felt I needed to do more.

So here we are. I'm doing this fundraiser to get him a proper camera, some batteries, a few memory cards and other basic equipment to get started.

I will match all donations 100% even if it ruins me in the process.

Building a swimming pool defying the monsoon season

If you decide to build a huge swimming pool in Gili Trawangan. Make sure you do it in the dry season. This is not what Martin did. The weather was getting more and more shifty and it nearly destroyed the entire dream.

Our complete studio transformation on a budget

We made three different productions in one day simultaneously. It was confusing. But here's the behind the scenes story of what took place in the Stockholm Concert Hall on this snowy December night in 2023 when we recorded the video for @JosepCastanyerAlonso's fugue version of Never Gonna Give You Up on the grand piano, while also filming that process as a scene for the documentary we released a week ago AND documenting the whole thing for this BTS film...

We did invent some ways of doing things and some challenges were too... well, challenging.

Cellist becoming YouTube piano sensation reshaping classical music

Josep Castanyer Alonso is a pro cellist in the Stockholm Royal Philharmonica, who is turning annoying pop songs into classical fugues, ON THE PIANO.
Robin Danehav and Isak Friberg followed him for 6 months when he was composing his version of "Never gonna give you up" for his Youtube channel @JosepCastanyerAlonso.

Josep Castayner Alonso is born in Barcelona and started playing piano and cello at a very young age. He then finished high school two years early to go to Cologne in Germany for music school and to become a professional cellist.

At 21 years old he achieved the unimaginable thing of getting a full time position employment as a cellist at the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, being the youngest person in the entire line up. This was all he ever dreamed of, but when it happen so early, it created the feeling of “what now?”.

So he started composing classical versions of annoying pop songs like Barbie Girl and the Angry Birds theme, on the piano. And this thing becomes huge.

This film explores his perfectionism, digital stage fright and the performance anxiety that comes with this whole thing.

Making this film has taught me a lot about the world of classical music. A world I was aware that it existed, but not much more. We’ve seen the inside of Stockholm Concert Hall, this giant blue mysterious building in central Stockholm that have this “cultural elite only” feeling to it.

It’s been super fun to make and I think the story is valuable and interesting to anyone, regardless if you are in to classical music or not.

The story in short:
It was me, Kalle and Isak on the cameras. The challenge when doing a thing like this is that using three cameras and recording each song about four times, we need to cover our bases and get all the angles we need. Without interfering with each other or everyone catching the same shots because that's where something interesting is happening at the moment.

So we made a plan where we could focus on different areas, and for each take using different framings. We started wide, then went closer, and in the final round we did the creative, interesting angles. This way we also learned the songs and where the most important moments were happening. Like when there's a base solo, it needs to be captured really close.

For lighting we turned off all ambient lights in the studio, and used a big light source blasting up in the ceiling to up the overall key of the room.

Then we built a ring of smaller lights around the studio, a variety of Aputure 300's, to always have backlit shots no matter which angle we were filming from. You want that light coming from the far end of the room straight into the camera to create an interesting look.

Also this setup allowed us to move freely and not having to worry about where the lights were setup, which there was no time for when the action started.

"You can choose the date, or the place. Not both"… Ever since Ryan & Sophie left Stockholm for their sailing adventure, which was originally only gonna last 6 months and is now up on year 6, this has been the mantra whenever we've been talking about me coming to sail with them on their boat.

So last summer, I got a text from Sophie saying "You should come and sail with us in Canada in two weeks" … Which I really wanted to but it was impossible to fit in. So I reply "But wait, on your way back aren't you passing by New York? I can find reasonably priced plane tickets there." Followed by a yes, and a "I also want to make a film about your full time life on a sailboat for six years.".

So in September Mira and I packed our bags and flew to NYC. I was more enthusiastic about living on a sailboat than her, so we got a hotel room for the week and decided we'd do boating for a couple of days and do the city the rest of the time. Which in hindsight was a wise decision.

The story of the nomadic lifestyle is often glamourised into this compelling narrative of blue water, sandy beaches and sitting with a coconut with your laptop in a serene environment.

But there is always a darker side to the story, one that rarely gets shared.

They've been through a lot during these 6 years on the sea. Good things mostly, but also some really rough moments like being confined to their boat in paradise during Covid lockdown. Which is not nearly as nice as it sounds. Ryan has also sailed across the Atlantic ocean once by himself, where he encountered horrible things that will probably keep a permanent scar in his mind for the rest of his life.

How do you deal with things like this? How does it work to have a relationship in a… ship? I mean it's a super cramped space and you are basically on top of each other compared to living in a (even tiny) apartment.

These were some of the things I wanted to learn more about to try to paint a more complete picture of what it's like to live a life completely opposite to the way we all are taught we are supposed to live.

What are the downsides?

In this film, I try to answer it all while we're sailing down East River with New York as a backdrop and spend the night just below the statue of liberty.

Robin Danehav 2024-03-28 | What if I told you most of the veggies you buy from the store and eat, contains… nothing?

Chemically fertilised soil provides very little nutrition, but they look good. And that's the kind of system we live in today.

But there is an easier, more efficient and environmentally friendly way to grow food. So why wouldn't we do that a larger scale?

This is @thehappypear Farm in Greystones, Ireland. Isak and I visited here when we were making the film about Harold and his broccoli sprouts (youtu.be/WNyLaeb24R4?si=KzNYV9Iw7_mcORmD), but I find this topic is so interesting that it deserves its own film.

The problem with today's food system is that it's all about money. Extract the most out of the earth for as little as possible. And when it doesn't work anymore, we put more fertilizer in the soil which is like beating a broken horse to get it up a hill.

But the money isn't everything. It's also very deeply rooted in how we have done things since farming got industrialized.

However, I don't think conventional farmers are evil Mr Burns characters trying to destroy the planet. But they are paid less and less for their yield and need to increase it to make things go around. Monocropping and soil destruction becomes secondary when you need to make income for your family. And big systems like that are hard to change.

This place is all about rengenerative farming, growing vegetables organically, no tractors plowing, no tilling. And why would you do this?

When you are like me, bound to get your veggies from the nearest grocery store, it's easy to believe that a certain product only tastes in one way. A carrot is a carrot is a carrot basically.

This could not be further from the truth though.

When we were at this farm, we could pick anything from the growing beds and eat it. I remember trying this spring onion. Just breaking off a bit at the top and putting it in my mouth. And the flavours were just insane.

I never thought a spring onion could be that delicious.

But there is much more to regenerative farming than this. And we only did one short visit here. But I'm convinced that this is the way forward. Growing things locally that are nutrious, taste good and helps keeping the biodiversity intact.

With less work for more yield.

It should be enough incentive to change those big systems controlling most of the food production today.

RED Komodo remote follow focus on DJI Ronin using Raveneye

Robin Danehav 2024-01-25 | Having the RED Komodo on the DJI Ronin RS2 Gimbal and using Raveneye for wireless video transmission and use it to pull focus remotely on Cine lenses with the Smallrig Magic WIZ follow focus system ... Is it a good idea or not?
