2022 Recap: 📍 Burning jackalopes & petting pigs at The M aker Camp 🎲 Visiting Wyrmwood ⛵ Visiting Totalboat 🌊 Going indoor surfing at Oasis Surf 🌲 Exploring the ADK Wild Center 🎏 Making my Kumi-Koi art piece (still available to buy on my website!)
This course walks you through all the steps of making kumiko, starting with raw materials to finished asanoha pattern. Along with tools and material choice, we'll go over all the fundamental principles of making kumiko while demonstrating how to do several operations with hand tools as well as the table saw.
What's included in the course: About an hour of purely instructional video content, broken into six easy-to-follow chapters highlighting different steps, tools, and processes. These videos are downloadable so you can follow along, rewind, and rewatch when it's most convenient for you.
This maker burn was the closing ceremony for the 2022 Catskill Mountain Maker Camp in upstate New York. An incredibly fun event where makers gather from around the world.
I usually work with new materials but this was a great opportunity to cut down on costs and save on materials while still achieving the same result. These cabinets were in pretty good condition from the start but I wanted to modify them to better fit my needs and freshen up their look a bit. I love how this turned out!
This art piece blends the traditional kumiko asanoha pattern with colorful epoxy. This large koi fish artwork measures 26" x 28" and there's one one available.
Having a cabinet that changes with your storage needs and grows with you is a plus and that's what I aimed for with this project. The adjustable dividers can be easily moved to adjust the size of different cubbies. Your can also store items on the bottom shelf and on top of the cabinet.
This was my very first attempt at making a tambour door so why not add some kumiko and epoxy to the mix? Tambour is much easier than I originally thought and I'll definitely be doing more of it in the future. Be sure to subscribe and ring the bell so you don't miss future videos.
These video shows the process of making a router table attachment for the SawStop contractor saw (CNS175-TGP) using the Rockler Pro Router lift (#55803). If you have a different saw or router lift and want to make this, you will need to modify some aspects, however the same principles should apply.

She sent some pieces to a few makers to see what we can make. There was one rule, don't make a duck. Well... I made a bottle opener.
Kumiko is an art form that requires perception and accuracy. With accurately milled strips, and accurately made grids, you're setting yourself up for success in the future infill steps.

This sled is designed to help cut the half laps in kumiko strips. The registration keys are adjustable to accommodate different spacing in the grids depending on the project.
This desk has a modern feel with heavy traditional Japanese influences. There were a lot of processes in this desk that involved techniques I haven't done before. I pushed a little harder during the design process which forced me to push myself while making it. I'm glad to add new skills to my tool belt. If you'r on the fence with trying something new, maybe give it a try and you might learn something new.
The combination of epoxy and kumiko is something that I’ve never seen before and I knew I needed to try it out. This is my first try at it and I’m blown away with how it turned out. You’ll be seeing more projects like this from me in the future.

These legs are made from solid walnut and are for a bed. The legs were attached to the bed frame using preexisting holes in the frame where the old legs were attached. I marked the hole locations on site, predrilled the holes in the legs and used 1/4" x 3" lag screws with washers.
Breadboard ends might seem a bit tricky for someone that hasn't made them before. As long as you take your time to lay out your joinery accurately, you should end up with nice fitting breadboard ends.
