#apple #retroRetro Computer Spares: A Hoarding DilemmaRudys Retro Intel2024-07-04 | Do you have several different retro\vintage computers? How many do you have? How many of each computer do you have?
I try to only keep two of every retro computer I own, if I can. This way I can use the second computer for spare parts. Also, it help keep my storage easier to manage.
With only two of each, I can get access to rare ICs that are no longer produced or other parts that are hard to find or very expensive.
If I was to collect more that say, four of each computer, that is that they are the same model, is that now considered hoarding or just a major collector?

Then the Commodore MPS1250 is the one you should have a look at. I'm showing several printers that I own and will show how the Commodore MPS1250 is the only one you really need.
00:00 Intro and Showing Printers 12:02 Looking at manual 16:00 Apple IIe Printing 21:04 VIC20 Printing 24:01 Picking a Printer
Apple II series printer commands PR#7 LIST PR#0
PR#7 is the slot that your parallel printer card is installed (1-2, 4-5 and 7). On a IIe slot 3 is used for video. On Apple II\II+ you can use slot 3. Slot 6 is used for the boot floppy drive controller card.
PR#0 deactivates the printer
Commodore VIC20\C64 printer commands: OPEN 4,4:CMD4:LIST:CLOSE4
This command will open the printer port, do a list of what is in memory and then close the port
Will the Apple ImageWriter II printer work with a Commodore 64?
Yes however, you will need an RS-232 interface on the Commodore end, then use an Apple 25-pin to mini-Din cable. You might have trouble with PETSCII (CBM’s different character set). The Commodore 64 (C64) does not have a standard RS-232 port. The port marked "Serial" on the C64 is its native IEC port, which is different from RS-232.
However, the User Port on the C64 can almost be used as an RS-232 port. The voltage levels are +5/0 instead of the ±12V of RS-232, so there's a need for some level shifting, which can be handled by an external MAX232 IC. So, while it's not a straightforward process, it is possible to adapt the C64 to communicate with standard RS-232 computers or peripherals. Please note that you will need some software running on the C64, as there is no built-in support for redirecting the RS-232 port to the keyboard input.

Thanks again for watching!Unbelievable: Repairing Apple III Monitor EasilyRudys Retro Intel2024-04-19 | Hello, everyone and welcome to Rudy's Retro Intel. I have a very special treat for this video: an Apple III monitor that I found at a garage sale for free! What???
It looks like it has been well-preserved. Will it work? Can it be saved or go to e-waste?? Can basic maintenance fix it???
Come and see what happens!
#aprilapples
This monitor was designed specifically for the Apple III computer, and it had some unique features. 1. It has a fine mesh on the CRT to reduce glare 2. It has a very slow phosphor refresh, which created a ghosting effect with any video movement 3. It also had a standard composite video input jack, which made it compatible with other computers, such as the Apple II series
The Apple III was released in 1980 as Apple's attempt to compete with the business market, but it was plagued by many design flaws and technical issues. One of the most notorious problems was the overheating of the logic board, which could cause the chips to pop out of their sockets. Some users even resorted to lifting and dropping their computers to fix them! We won't do that to the monitor!
However, because of the poor sales and reputation of the Apple III, this monitor was not very popular or widely distributed. It was discontinued along with the Apple III plus in 1985, and it became a rare and sought-after item for collectors and enthusiasts.
I hope you enjoyed this video, and I'll see you next time, Take care!

Rudy #Apple, #Apple IISurprising Hack: Use a Commodore VIC20 to fix Commodore PETRudys Retro Intel2024-03-22 | Using an older version of the Commodore VIC20 computer to fix a Commodore PET computer? Yes!! There are several chips that are used in both computers. Let's have a look at them.
MOS 6522 VIA (Versatile Interface Adapter) - I\O control like keyboard and ports. The MOS Technology 6522 chip was used in the Commodore PET for peripheral I/O, The 6522 was used for interfacing with the keyboard, cassette tape, and other peripherals The 6522 was also used in the Commodore VIC-20 for peripheral I/O. The VIC-20 has two 6522 chips, one of which is used for the keyboard matrix and the other for joysticks, various ports, etc.
2114 - RAM The first version of the Commodore PET 2001-8 used MPS6540 ROM chips and MPS6550 RAM chips. Later versions substituted 2316B ROM chips in place of the 6540’s and/or 2114 RAMs in place of the 6550s
MOS 6502 - CPU (Central Processing Unit) executed at 1Mhz
* Can also get the 6502 and 6522s from a Commodore 1541 floppy drive *
Here are PET assemblies that use the 2114 RAM chips for the video RAM.
Dynamic PET Assembly #8032029 2114 is used for video RAM.
Dynamic PET 80 Column that uses 2114 RAM for video RAM Assembly #8032030-01 80 Column Dynamic PET 32K, Assembly #8032030-02 80 Column Dynamic PET 16k, Assembly #8032030-03 80 Column Dynamic PET 16k, Assembly #8032030-04 80 Column Dynamic PET 16k, Assembly #8032030-05 80 Column Dynamic PET 16k, Assembly #8032030-06 80 Column Dynamic PET 16k, Assembly #8032087

It enables you to input data via micro switches and output to LEDs. Using MBASIC85 you can write interesting programs to control this card. Let's look as how this works and some programs I have created.
In BASIC the port can be read with the INP(0) command which will return a number from 0 to 255, and written to with OUT 0,x where x is the number to output from 0 to 255 In assembly language, the mnemonics in a , (0) and out (0) , a do the same function Example BASIC program where the buttons are read and their value displayed on the lights

Rudy #NABU NABU computer repairCommodore PET 2001-8 Repair Time. Lets see if it will live again!Rudys Retro Intel2024-02-11 | In this video, I will be repairing a Commodore PET 2001-8 computer. Now I don't have the case, monitor or power supply. Going to see if we can use the Commodore PET 4016 to help out. Let's see how this goes.
The documentation is ambiguous about H3 so I'm not sure which regulator powers that chip. *NOTE: The orientation of the character ROM at A2 is different for different version of the PCB.
The 2001-8 (Assembly Number 320081) which has MOS 6550 RAM and Synertek 2316B ROMs. The 2001-8 (Assembly Number 320008) which has MOS 6540 ROMs. The layout is the same but the chip pinouts are different. It is only the character ROM orientation that's different for 6540 vs 2316B ROM chips. The Assembly Number 320132 and Assembly Number 320137 boards use 2114 sRAM instead of 6550 with 6540 and 2316B ROMs respectively.

RudyImprove Your Kaypro II with a Video Output AdapterRudys Retro Intel2023-12-17 | In this video, I show my new video output board. It was made so that vintage computers that don't have external composite or RGB2HDMI output now can have it. The Kaypro II computer doesn't have this, so let's see if I can get it to work.
This board, I call it the Generic Video Out adapter Model 2320 and can do the following:
1. Composite video output 2. R2GB2HDMI video output port - Needs RGB2HDMI board to get HDMI video
This board can also be used in computers that have a video problem that can't be repaired. Like a bad picture tube or fly back transformer that can't be found\replaced. If the part is no longer available, then you can put in a small modern screen with an HDMI connection and connect this board. Next think you know, you are back in business.
Hopefully, you will enjoy this video and watch my GitHub page for when the gerber files will be released in early 2024. I am not selling this board, but if you really need one, you can contact me via email.
UPDATE!! Check my GitHub page for the Graber files. There are now 2 boards. One is as shown in the video and the other is just foe RGB2HDMI connections. Use either one.

Differences between 2040 drive and 4040 drive The Commodore 4040 is the replacement for the previous models 2040 (USA) and 3040 (Europe). It's a dual drive 5¼" floppy disk subsystem for Commodore International computers. It uses a wide case form and uses the IEEE-488 interface common to Commodore PET/CBM computers.
These drive models use a similar single density, single side floppy data storage format to that used by the Commodore 1541 drive, but with a slightly different data marker indicating which model originally formatted the disk. The low-level disk format was similar enough to allow reading between models, but different enough that one series of drive models could not reliably write to disks formatted with one of the other model series.
Drive commands Here is a list of the most common commands that are used with this drive. 2040-4040 Commands **note 0 is the number zero and not the letter**
Format Disk - name_of_disk = name of the diskette - D0 = drive number, D0= drive 0 or D1=drive 1 HEADER"name_of_disk", D0, I01
View contents of diskette DIRECTORY CATALOG
Verify diskette To verify the diskette in drive 0 COLLECT
To verify the diskette in drive 1 COLLECT D1
Backup diskette from one drive to the other - D1 = will be backed up - D0 = where the copy will be made to BACKUP D1 TO D0
Save program to diskette - 0 = drive number, use 1 for drive 1 - DEMO = name of program SAVE"0:DEMO",8
Load program to diskette - 0 = drive number, use 1 for drive 1 - DEMO = name of program LOAD"0:DEMO",8
Rename a program name - D0 = drive 0, change to D1 for drive 1 - OldName = the existing name of file - NewName = the new name of the file RENAME D0,"OldName" TO "NewName"
Delete a file on the diskette - D0 = drive number, use D1 for drive 1 - FileName = the name of the file to delete SCRATCH D0,"FileName"ZX Spectrum Computer Diagnostic Cartridges ReviewRudys Retro Intel2023-07-28 | There are several diagnostic cartridges for the ZX Spectrum computers. This helps to determine if the issue is on the computer or analog board within the monitor. Plus saves the built-in monitor from frequent powering on and off.
I have also added the output for audio and a joystick port. This is still a work in progress, so join me as I demo what it does. Stay tuned for updates.
