What's the Matter With Delaware (affiliate link: amzn.to/4aq3D9Q): The definite 101 book here! I will be real with you - normally when I rely on a book I like to put it on screen, praise it, etc. Ultimately, this one just ended up being more anti-Delaware in weird ways and also a little dated in light of the past couple years. I also just didn't gibe with the premise: I don't think there's anything wrong with a state that's following incentives in a big system. That said, check it out if this video left you hating DE.
Chancellors Roundtable: youtube.com/watch?v=6OhLXrYzzyg Interesting watch! I actually found this surprisingly accessible for a newb. The thing I mention at the end of this video (and didn't get into in Patreon) is about the Trulia case - basically lawyers were spamming the court to get legal fees on case settlements, and the DE bosses said, "Cut that out!" I was gonna use it as an example of how the court routinely pruned itself to stay fit and lean.
The boss herself on a panel: youtube.com/watch?v=41FqrjpGjLI Most of this was a bit narrow for this video, but it was good to get a vibe and a couple quotes.

Once again, Harvard case studies (one is actually from Stanford I think) saved the day. These are just helpful for a grounding and some of the numbers and stats I used in the video. 9 bucks each though! That’s why it’s business school I guess.

This was a lot of fun. A somewhat weird fact is that the only BBQ I ate during this story was in KC, and so I am currently in deep pain missing NC and Texas BBQ (sorry Memphis, St. Louis, everyone else — I know I’m ripping you off a bit). I prefer both. Sorry KC. Tough to make editorial choices on this vid but it had to be done!
Books I read include (affiliate links):
BBQ: The History of an American Institution by Robert Moss amzn.to/3wsovyR This is really your best bet for a comprehensive BBQ book. It surveys everywhere, gives you nice tables and charts, etc. He’ll be mad I didn’t debunk the Carolina Gold/German Connection more explicitly, but I think it’s cool and makes sense, so I thought you should know with the caveat I included in the vid. He’s also quite active in the modern BBQ scene.
Black Smoke by Adrian Miller amzn.to/42PMIuY Recommended by one of you! Added helpful nuance to the piece, though I don’t touch on it a ton. I thought I added the most value through newspaper articles about Henry Perry. The book also includes lengthy sections about modern BBQ and BBQ at churches, etc. Worth reading if the subject matter interests you.
Savage BBQ by Andrew Warnes amzn.to/3uJQLfP Good book to help me avoid a bit of the easy assumptions that appear on clickbait BBQ articles. Stuff about indigenous cooking is complicated quite a bit in this book, so I think it helped me land in the right place the way I depict it, albeit briefly, in the video.
Eater on Chicago Aquarium chicago.eater.com/2016/6/15/11923078/chicago-style-barbecue-history Eater was a good resource to kinda check coverage I was or wasn’t providing. Lots of articles convinced me STL or Memphis BBQ wasn’t worth a big digression (which I’m sure will annoy some people, but I remain convinced). It also led me to the quirky Chicago Aquarium smoker which I thought was a fun teaser.
Southern Foodways southernfoodways.org Probably went to books more than here, but it was recommended by a viewer and is solid.

This video started initially when I was interested in photography history and NASA. As I did research though, I kinda narrowed on Earthrise - I was fascinated by how such a famous photo could be such an unplanned, nearly accidental thing. Even if you don’t buy my argument, I hope you enjoy seeing some of these amazing photos and learning about some of the cool experiments.
This is where all the photos are sourced from. https://tothemoon.ser.asu.edu/ It’s surprisingly complicated to find the right or best copies of the photo, and it ends up being a bit of a judgment call. This site provides what they say are unedited scans in really high resolution (as well as copies in more manageable sizes and with some editing). I felt like I didn’t really color correct the images I used “right,” but I preferred having duller images to ones that had been super edited in ways I couldn’t judge. Anyway, your mileage may vary - check it out for yourself!
The Apollo Flight Journal: nasa.gov/history/afj/ap08fj This is your best place to check quotes, chronology, and get all the little details on events, as well as clarifications on confusing stuff. So I think this is a fun place to nerd out.
Here’s Jennifer Levasseur’s dissertation. This really is what gave me my footing. For a while, I thought I’d need to figure out how to include her in it because it felt like a straight up adaptation. But as I read on, there were a lot of places I diverged and the scope of her thing was a lot bigger.
However, you’ll see where I got the vibe of this video and why I focused primarily on Hasselblad and Ansco Autoset.
Very influential and worth a read! https://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/document?repid=rep1&type=pdf&doi=73273a2d30fafe731d36bf06a07b41ec46cdd1d3
In general, this is where I got all the other documents you see in the video. A quick search should help you find them but if you can’t, please feel free to email me. This is just such a gold mine though, nobody talks about a lot of the stuff in here. ntrs.nasa.gov/search
Oh, here’s John Glenn’s memoir! amzn.to/484KOaK I won’t pretend I read it though - I was just mining for camera facts! He actually calls the Ansco Autoset a Minolta, which I think is wrong because Minolta bought them later (Smithsonian calls it an Autoset). Anyway, the dude is like the last American hero, so I wasn’t gonna call him out on that in the video, hence the elision in the quote. The Stanley water bottle craze, unpackedPhil Edwards2024-01-16 | Liquid Container fever has some unusual origins.

My research for this video primarily relied on piecing together stats from different articles, but this Harvard Business Review podcast (which I really only read in transcript form) was the most important thing for unlocking the perspective you see in the video. Not that Mr. Reilly ever says any of this explicitly. He’s pretty on message. But it kinda shaped my perspective. hbr.org/podcast/2023/08/how-to-reinvent-a-consumer-brand

Let's get into it! These are all affiliate links - some of these books are available free at Archive.org or your library. I will admit that I had to buy the Joe Foster book cause there's no digital version.
I don't know what my deal was, but I was oddly affected by this book. He makes it pretty personal for a CEO memoir, and the scene - Bury in the 50s and 60s — just has a ton more interesting historical texture than many other memoirs. There were some sad family moments, a lot of fighting, and some bittersweet triumphs. Crazy book.
I didn't actually reread this fully for this vid — just skimmed and remembered it. As I was looking through it, Knight came off a bit more likeable than I remembered. But then again, the end of the book is all about the profound insights of "The Bucket List" movie so....I don't know. I think I know who I'm siding with in the sneaker wars.
Swoosh: The Unauthorized Story of Nike and the Men Who Played There amzn.to/47prA06
I mainly mined this for aerobics/Reebok factoids. It did leave me with the impression that my take was correct though.
David Foster's blog: fostersfamousshoes.wordpress.com/blog This blog confirmed my general affection for the Foster clan and helped me check some facts. Again, I have developed a bit of a parasocial relationship with the Fosters at this point and thus feel mega-guilty for saying Reebok was Paul Fireman's creation but...yeah. Anyway, fun blog — lots of pictures and stuff I didn't feel comfortable using in the video but you could check it out.

This was a super booky one. So here’s some books with little capsule reviews. They’re all affiliate links, which means I will make a fortune from your purchases of fry-based books.
Also, have you ever heard of Burger Chef? I had not — but it was so popular! Crazy.
Behind the Arches: amzn.to/47keWyY The top book - super well reported, at least by appearances. Nails the fry issue (to a degree of complexity I barely covered). It also gets into all the other ways McDonalds optimized stuff, from the McD bros using modified multimixers to mix shakes faster, to beef bargaining. I really should have figured out a way to fit Fred Turner into this video — he’s very much the…I dunno, Jesse to Kroc’s Walter White.
Grinding It Out: amzn.to/49fRg0F Ray Kroc’s opus to Ray Kroc. I guess I could have interrogated more whether Kroc was telling the truth about his fry obsession, but it seemed pretty confirmed by Behind the Arches. It was a fun book. I think The Founder had to sell him short a bit for storytelling purposes, but all this research made me respect Kroc a lot more.
The Burger King: amzn.to/3MqbVoQ Not gonna lie, this memoir is not as good as Kroc’s. McLamore, well, he seems like a more well-rounded human being but a less interesting burger-preneur. It’s kind of a bummer how Pillsbury buys them and they end up in corporate purgatory. Nevertheless, it’s interesting just because you don’t know anything about BK’s origins before it.
JR Simplot: A Billion the Hard way: amzn.to/3QOZPIF Good well done book — bit of a hagiography to be sure, which might be fine. It is very niche in that you have to be a Simplot obsessive to be into this imho.
Dave’s Way: amzn.to/45XfPN2 I just searched this one for the fry trivia, and he mentions how his successor was a fry obsessive.
Franchising: The Business Strategy that Changed The World: amzn.to/46YTfEV I just read the McDonald’s chapter, but I read it first and it was a good starting point. I’m probably gonna read the rest of the book to mine for ideas for this series. Some reviewers point out that it’s a bit puffy of a book, but that can be fine if it’s a starting point.4 Halloween masksPhil Edwards2023-10-30 | The folder: jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/archives/JFKWHP/1963/Month%2010/Day%2031/JFKWHP-1963-10-31-D

Check out the key paper behind this video: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22301271 This paper…I dunno, it’s a weird one. It’s meant for a specialist audience for sure. It’s obviously mainly about how Holmgren was a “fraud” - but I came away being like, OK, who cares? The outcome is way more important than the wreck. Nevertheless, I do obviously appreciate the pursuit of truth and the attention to detail is great.
