1972-73 Television Season 50th Anniversary: Mod Squad (opening credits) TelevisionVanguard 2023-03-01 | We continue our walk down memory lane and reviewing the 1972-1973 television season and police and detective series dramas... many new ones, and some bidding farewell after many seasons. We are also at that stage of the television season where we are saying farewell to series that wrapped up production and/or were canceled as the 1972-1973 season reached the home stretch.Today, Mod Squad. A cool series, great cast, and definitely of its time, Mod Squad gave producer Aaron Spelling his first taste of great success on television prime time. The Mod Squad aired its final new episode and series finale fifty years ago tonight, on March 1, 1973.Mod Squad would run five years, becoming a hit for ABC. With a show that is (much like Laugh-In), very much in tune with the day and era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, it would stand to reason that both Laugh-In and Mod Squad would wrap things up as the mid 1970s drew near.Nevertheless, a great, compelling series with a wonderful young cast... Peggy Lipton was one of the truly bright young actress and stars of that ear, and made that wonderful comeback on Twin Peaks twenty years later. Rest in peace Peggy Lipton. Today, we pay tribute to Barnaby Jones.By the early 1970s, Quinn Martin Productions was on a great roll of producing television police/detective dramas, and found the early 1970s prime time television environment the perfect fit. The networks were looking for private eye and crime drama series, and Quinn Martin was ready to deliver. During this time period, the networks were green-lighting all kinds of detective television series featuring a great variety of lead character types. Old detective, young detective, short detectives, fat detectives, smart detective, possibly dim/certainly clever detectives. Why not a really old detective? Enter Barnaby Jones.Buddy Ebsen was as good a quaranteed success as their was on television at this time. He had just come off a historic nine year run on CBS' The Beverly Hillbillies. As unlikely as it might seem at first glance that Jed Clampett would make a good detective, if anyone could do it, Buddy Ebsen could. Plus, CBS wanted to be in business with Buddy Ebsen at this stage of his career, the perfect familiar and welcoming face on a family television set. These four films brought her stardom and she became a house-hold name.Born in Chicago on September 5, 1940, Jo Raquel Tejada attended San Diego State on a theater arts scholarship and got started in 'the business' as a local television weathercaster. Ms. Welch then began her career on television, making guest appearances (small roles) on The Virginian (1964), McHale's Navy (1964) and Bewitched (1964). She also was one of many young actresses who audition for the role of Mary Ann on the television series Gilligan's Island.As she gained experience and notoriety and box-office success, she began making films with Hollywood icons. She worked with Hollywood stars and legends Jimmy Stewart and Dean Martin in Bandolero! in 1968 and Lady in Cement that same year with Hollywood legend Frank Sinatra. 1972-73 Television Season 50th Anniversary: The Rookies TelevisionVanguard 2023-02-01 | Hello to February 2023. We begin this month with more focus on the police and detective series that made their debuts in the 1972-73 television season. First up, the new ABC hit series The Rookies.Aaron Spelling had made a name for himself as a very successful television series producer by the time the 1970s arrived. The Mod Squad was a mega hit, showing three young people who fight crime together. The cast of that series featured a young black actor (Clarence Williams III) in a starring role... something that had not been done prior to 1968. By the 1972, that series was nearing the end of its run, and the Spelling team was getting a new series up and running: The Rookies. This new series also featured young actors, this time in the police academy, and once again, Spelling featured a young black actor in a lead role: Georg Stanford Brown. The cast also included Michael Ontkean, Sam Melville and Kate Jackson, along with Gerald S. O'Loughlin, playing the 'adult' supervising role (akin to Tige Andrews on The Mod Squad.) The opening credits and theme song on both series have quite a bit in common as well. As we work our way through each season paying tribute to the various television seasons of yesteryear, we also stop every once in a while to pay tribute to special milestones of individual television series, as well as to remember special actors and actresses from those series. We have our personal favorites who we remember each year on their birthday, and every once in a while we want to pay tribute to an actor or actress who may no longer be with us, but remains in our memories and made a significant impact on television.Today, we pay tribute to John Forsythe, who was born 105 years ago today, January 29, 1918. Mr. Forsythe passed away on April 1, 2010 at the age of 92.His acting career spanned the decades, and the second half of the 20th century, including a remarkable run on television. There are very few actors and actresses who had three hit (and long running) broadcast television series: Lucille Ball, Betty White, Robert Conrad, Michael Landon... John Forsythe is a member of this very unique and short-list club. His television series work spanned the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, as did the work of the other four members of this club. It requires great longevity, and an ability to 'connect' with viewers over a long period time, on a weekly basis. (Just for completeness, James Garner came very close to making this special list, as did Bob Newhart).John Forsythe began his acting career in the 1940s, spent time in the military during WWII, and post war began to get significant roles in feature films working with Loretta Young, Shirley MacLaine and Oliva de Havilland.He began to make the migration to the young medium of television in the 1950s, beginning with the starring role of Bentley Gregg on the hit CBS series Bachelor Father. The show would move to NBC and then ABC during its five year run from 1957 to 1962 (the first series to play on all three networks). The series co-starred Noreen Corcoran as daughter Kelly and Sammee Tong as home caretaker and butler Peter. A sweet, endearing show that gave many young actresses their first work on television, including Linda Evans.After the series ended, Forsythe moved back to feature films: Madame X, In Cold Blodd and Topaz, a Alfred Hitchcock international thriller.Mr. Forsythe moved back to television again in the mid 1970s, with the hit series Charlie's Angels, where he played the never seen 'Charlie', leading his three 'angel's/detectives each week from one adventure and crime to the next. It was on this series that Forsythe met show producer Aaron Spelling, and the two would team up again in the 1980s.In the late 1970s, Forsythe battled some health issues, but was able to continue his voice work on Charlie's Angels, as well as the feature film 'And Justice For All', battling lawyer Al Pacino... a very impressive movie.In 1981, Forsythe hit super stardom with the hit ABC television series Dynasty. Produced by Aaron Spelling, the show became, along with CBS' Dallas, the biggest hit drama series of the decade and made house-hold names of their stars. In the 1990s, John Forsythe returned to series television with the series 'The Powers That Be', but the series longevity and success was not to be. Mr. Forsythe did return to working with the Dynasty cast in tv-movie/mini-series work and a documentary retrospective on the series. 1972-73 Television Season 50th Anniversary: Bonanza (King of the Mountain 2/23/64 closing credits) TelevisionVanguard 2023-01-16 | Fifty years ago today, January 16, 2023, the NBC television western Bonanza ended it remarkable run. The series debuted on September 12, 1959, and was telecast on primetime television with its final episode January 16, 1973. A remarkable fourteen year run that saw a staggering 432 episodes filmed.The series made stars and household names of its four leading men - Lorne Green, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker and young Michael Landon. We pay tribute to the series today on this fiftieth anniversary of the ending of the series. It has become a mainstay of the television syndication market for fifty years, and we suspect, will be around in some form for another fifty years.The era of the western on television in 1973 was coming to a close. At one time, in the late 1950s when Bonanza had debuted, the television landscape was covered with westerns. By 1973, there was just four left in primetime - Alias Smith and Jones (when had just ended its run a week earlier), Bonanza, which ended on January 16, 1973, Gunsmoke, with was the granddaddy of all westerns and could continue of a couple of more seasons, and the new series Kung Fu, which was not your typical western. Definitely times were changing on television as the mid 1970s appeared over the horizon. Long running series such as My Three Sons (1960-1972), Bewitched (1964-1972), and now Bonanza (1959-1973) were leaving the stage, and Gunsmoke was the last remaining 'old' series in primetime. In fact, once The Doris Day Show would end its run in the spring of 1973, it really just left Gunsmoke, The Lucy Show, Hawaii Five-O and The Carol Burnett Show as the last remaining series from the late 1960s... The Brady Bunch debuting in fall 1969. Another season would pass, and by spring 1974, only Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O and The Carol Burnett Show would remain from the 1960s, let alone 1950s. Change was coming to television as the mid-decade of the 1970s arrived. My Three Sons and the computer age in 1965 (... and wrapping up our first ten years) TelevisionVanguard 2022-12-31 | We've reached the end of the line for 2022... December 31, 2022. A challenging year we think most would agree. Some years are just better than others for most people, and in people's minds, and some are just a bit worse. 2022 seems to have fallen into that latter category. A disappointment. But perhaps time will be kind to this past year and it will fare better in our memories.As we say goodbye to 2022, we thought a good time to reflect on our work here at Television Vanguard these past ten years. We opened up shop back in the summer of 2013, with the goal of running a 'PSA-like' channel for the history of television... a not-for-profit channel focusing on television's past and paying tribute to all the fine work, both in front of and behind the camera over the decades... particularly the late 1940s to the late 1970s. This thirty year run when broadcast television was one of the dominant forces in everyday life. It's impact on two generations of people, of children (the 'one-eyed' baby-sitting monster') cannot be denied. We here at Television Vanguard are living proof of that impact... both good and perhaps not so good! ;)Over the past ten years, we feel we have accomplished what we set out to do... to shine a light on the importance of the pioneers of broadcast television who helped shape the medium from infancy in the late '40s and 1950s to it's peak-power during the 1960s and 1970s. With the advent of cable television (CNN, etc) and the VCR in the 1980s, the broadcast television landscape (and all those water-cooler discussions after a big television event) were forever altered. But we felt it was important to ensure that when people today hear the television industry, with all their streaming channels, say that this is 'peak television and the second golden age' of the medium, perhaps we should recall the 'real golden age' of television from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. At the very least, we wanted to ensure some form of a television history tribute channel was available to YouTube viewers. We hope Television Vanguard has done some good along those lines, and not too much copyright damage.Now, in the 2020's, forty years later, more change has arrived with the advent of social media 'television' on demand, and of course YouTube, Netflix and all the streaming channels from the major studios. A flood of content options. We miss the days of 'the big three': NBC, CBS and ABC (and PBS as the fourth national channel), when everyone watched the same things and could talk about them together. However, change is coming for broadcast television, and we hope we've found a way to pay tribute to that 1947 to 1979 television era with this Television Vanguard channel. If we were able to do that, we 'succeeded' in our initial quest of 2013.Going forward now, we're going to begin to shift the focus to this 'second era'' of television of the 1980s and 1990s, when we reached the time of '150 channels and nothing on', to a time when cable television and broadcast television found a way to co-exist and the VCR and viewer's ability to 'time-shift' their entertainment got started. We'll continue our year-by-year, season-by-season look back at the 1970s, but we'll also pivot to 'all things 1980s and 1990'. This is a good time to do so as enough time has now passed to look back at television in that era of personal computers, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton eras and the globalization of society and how television affected those times.We'll still from time to time reach back into our vaults to unearth a gem from the 1950s and 1960s, and with that in mind, we present this clip from My Three Sons. It is the perfect segue video of our shift in focus here at Television Vanguard and for the 'Three Sons' series... a real 'outlier' from the series as the boys make their first real encounter with the computer age. Facing the future and change.My Three Sons ended its broadcast run fifty years ago in 1972... it was, along with Gunsmoke on CBS and Bonanza on NBC, the last of the three series on primetime television with roots (pilot in the cast of Sons) in the 1950s. As these three series ended their runs, the final linkages to television in the 1950s was being severed, and the seeds of what would become television in the 1980s were being planted as the mid 1970s came into view. Legendary Television News Journalist, Emmy winner and The View creator Barbara Walters has died TelevisionVanguard 2022-12-31 | One of television's legends and pioneers, Barbara Walters, has died. She died yesterday, Friday, November 30, 2022 at the age of 93. She had a remarkable career on television and helped blaze a trail for other women in the broadcast journalism to follow, and helped break barriers in the industry for women.Born on September 25, 1929 in Boston, Ms. Walters would move with her family to Miami (her father ran a nightclub) and then to New York. Attended collage and entered the advertising field in New York before segueing into television at the New York City NBC affiliate. Ms. Walters had a fifty year career in television, starting out with the NBC The Today Show in the 1950s as a producer. She migrated to writer on the show by the late 1950s. She worked her way onto the show in front of the camera as a 'woman's stories' reporter in 1961. Her talent, skill and drive helped propel her to the co-anchor desk alongside Hugh Downs. She eventually reached the status of co-host alongside Jim Hartz in 1974, although she had essentially been the co-host (without the official title) for years with Hugh Downs, Frank McGee and then Jim Hartz.She left The Today Show and NBC in 1976 to join ABC and their nightly news program alongside Harry Reasoner. That 'experiment' did not work out well for all involved, and Ms. Walters left the show; however, ABC had other plans for her. She would began her series of in-depth television interviews with celebrities and political leaders and they became legendary and a ratings bonanza for ABC. The interview specials were called The Barbara Walters Specials, and would often precede, or follow, major ABC television events, such as the annual Academy Awards show.In the late 1970s, ABC paired Hugh Downs with Barbara Walters to co-host the new ABC magazine program, 20/20. In time, after the continued success of her specials and 20/20, Barbara Walters ventured into daytime television with her daily television talk show The View. The show became a major hit for ABC, and has set the standard for all the television talk shows on broadcast television since. Ms. Walters retired from The View and ABC in 2014. A legendary career and an extraordinary talent. Childrens Classic Television Christmas Specials TelevisionVanguard 2022-12-17 | The Christmas season is upon us, and it just wouldn't be Christmas without the classic children's television Christmas specials of the 1960s and early 1970s. They are truly the vanguard of television holiday season entertainment, for both children and adults who remain young at heat.Today, we present four of the best - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and The Little Drummer Boy. Rankin Bass Productions - the very best in the business of creating children's television classics for the Christmas holidays.We just watched some of the CBS special presentations of both Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, broadcast last Saturday night, Dec. 10th, and we're sure these and other holiday classics will be broadcast or re-broadcast on the networks before next Christmas weekend. Check local listings and TV Guide listings for more detailsAfter watching Rudolph and Frosty last weekend, it got us thinking about a list of the all-time best of the Christmas children's specials genre. Everyone has their top five all-time favorite classic/vintage Christmas specials for children... after some discussion here at Television Vanguard, the group came up with this consensus top 5 all-time... all coming out around that mid 1960s to late 1960s timeframe:#1 Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)This one is hard to beat, and set the standard early... one hour in length, almost 'movie like' in the complexity of the storyline. Obviously, great stop-motion animation work, and great writing... the idea of combining the story line of the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer song with the concept of 'the island of misfit toys'... brilliant. The sound track and songs, with Burl Ives' snowman out front... everything just works so well on this special.# 2 A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)A strong #2 spot here... almost #1. Like Rudolph at #1, this animation special set the standards, delving into adult themes and Christmas time longing, sadness and questioning. Peanuts creator Charles Schultz does a wonderful job of bringing Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang to television. Bill Melendez' animation and Lee Mendelson's production work shine brightly in this special. The Vince Geraldi soundtrack is spectacular and Lee Mendelson's 'Christmas Time is Here' is a haunting classic song and along with 'Lucy and Linus', have become holiday season standards on the radio. We only wish the special had been one hour instead of a half-hour, which just flys by.# 3 Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)Following right behind the debuts of Rudolph and Charlie Brown, the Grinch was a wild and unpredictable ride of cartoon magic, humor and madness that mirrors the charm and fun of the Seuss book. Boris Karloff is unforgettable as the narrator. Hard not to smile when watching this animation special. It is different than the Rudolph and Charlie Brown specials of the previous two years, and certainly there is not the same level of gentle story telling and misty sadness of Rudolph and Charlie Brown's specials. However, this Grinch special makes up for that lack of whimsey with bold animation and great humor as we watch the diabolical Grinch run amuck in the town of Whoville. #4 Frosty the Snowman (1969)The animation was starting to have that 'late 1960s soft-color pallet' by the time Frosty the Snowman debuted, but it was still a nice tribute to the song and a sweet storyline with cartoon-like Jimmy Durante doing the hosting. Jackie Vernon and Billy DeWitt add great voice work as well. This one is not on par with the other three specials in the top three spots on this list, but still a timeless classic that has stood the test of time.#5 Mr. Magoo's Scrooge Christmas (1962)Debuting a couple of years before the Rankin Bass Rudolph special, Mr. Magoo, paying homage to the classic Mr. Scrooge Christmas Past, Present and Future storyline, is timeless. With the always charming Jim Backus voicing Magoo, this animation special helped prove that a children's television classic could come to life on television, and helped pave the way for the remarkable children's Christmas specials that were to come the rest of the decade. LegacyBox - helping to manage your old videos TelevisionVanguard 2022-12-16 | We thought we'd take a slight detour in our regularly scheduled holiday programming to share this video with you here on December 16, 2022 as we pay tribute today to the 75th anniversary of the invention of the transistor. Today, we are looking at the technical aspects of what helps keep vintage television channels like Television Vanguard running. Here at Television Vanguard, we spend a good amount of our time that we allot to our channel's construction to not only searching and finding old vintage video content that represents a look back at television's past, but also the technical aspects of managing and converting this wide variety of content into the digital file sets required for YouTube and other digital storage processes and devices. It is a labor of love, and truly a 'side-gig' for the five of us 'nerds' at Television Vanguard here in the Silicon Valley and SF Peninsula. However, having tools that can help manage and convert these many types of old media into YouTube streaming ready files is an important and valued asset.While we have our own facilities here on site in our lab/library and a small team to keep things running, we are always on the look out for other teams and companies that can offer these same services to the general public and fans of television and the entertainment business and medium... be it video, audio, and so forth. One such company that we've come across is a company called 'LegacyBox.' We are not necessarily recommending this product and service via this video clip, and have not done testing that would necessarily guarantee a successful outcome for every possible combination or customer requirements that our viewers here may have for a company like LegacyBox. However, we have studied up on the product and service, and we do think for those of you out there watching today who may have needs for video preservation and management, that LegacyBox offers a nice option to investigate and consider. There are still a lot of old VHS tapes (DVDs now as well !) stored away somewhere in our homes, and most certainly some timeless memories stored on those old tapes. 75th Anniversary of the invention of the transistor - at the heart all things electronics TelevisionVanguard 2022-12-16 | We wanted to take a moment today to pay tribute to one of the twentieth century's greatest discoveries and inventions - the transistor. At the heart of all electronic devices we use today is the integrated circuit - the silicon chip, and at the heart of that chip is the miniaturization of many millions of transistors.Without that important work and invention at Bell Labs (and the theoretical work that preceded this work, dating back to the 1920s), there would be no Internet, no YouTube, no Television Vanguard, etc. The core building block of all the things we do online, on our computers, on our smart phones, smart devices, etc, etc... everything is built upon the microprocessor, the integrated circuit... and the transistor.Seventy five years ago today, on December 16, 1947, the first built and tested working transistor was created at AT&T Bell Labs by Walter Brattain and John Bardeen, working for project lead William Shockley.A week later, on December 23, 1947, Shockley, Bardeen and Brattain demonstrated the 'point-contact' transistor to executives at Bell Labs. The invention would revolutionize the young electronics industry. And the invention would forever change the way people live and work for decades and decades to come. Shockley would go on to start his own business called Shockley Labs in Mountain View, California, in the heart of what is now known as The Silicon Valley. The work done there, an extension of what was started at Bell Labs, would provide the launch pad for the start-up Fairchild Semiconductor, funded by Fairchild Camera and lead by eight engineers and technologists who left Shockley after a disagreement with his management style.The eight leads at Fairchild Semiconductor who eventually branch out during the 1960s to start their own companies, and that really started the growth and boom of what we now call Silicon Valley. In particular, two of the eight, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, would go on to start up Intel in the late 1960s and create the microprocessor. As this video clip narrates, the path from the invention of the transistor to the founding of Intel would have seismic ramifications for not only the computer age, but the communications industry as well at the information age and 'big data' age we now live in. (ClearCaptions commercial) TelevisionVanguard 2022-12-14 | Kathy Garver is one of our favorites here at Television Vanguard, and has been active and busy in the entertainment business since her acting career got started out of college in the mid 1960s on the hit CBS series Family Affair. We have numerous interview clips and segments on the series in our archives here at Television Vanguard. She has become a top notch voice-over actor in a host of acting roles over the years, and has segued into television commercials as well for some products and services that offer help to those with hearing impairments.Today is Kathy's birthday, and we want to wish her at very happy birthday!
