How I Deal with Chronic Pain - Build A Ladder

Here’s a short snippet of a video I just made, talking about my exit from YouTube, food and travel, Japan, relationships, and more. I disassembled all of the points of contact I once had while wandering the woods, and obsessed over healing, to an unhealthy degree.
It took me a while to realize how my approach to the healing process has been damaging to me and to those around me, and I think I’ve come to a point now where I’m ready to reintegrate with the parts of me I’ve been neglecting. I’m here to celebrate my love of food and travel again, to share this city and country that I now call home, and to connect with the people and community around me.
I’ll share what that process was like in this video, and tomorrow I’ll be sharing my guide on What to Eat in Lisbon. Check it out on YouTube. Link in the bio.

I think you saw how unhealthy I got at one point. I had a very challenging relationship with food post-Covid, and I've slowly, very slowly, been finding a way to get comfortable with what was once a big part of me, to integrate with the parts of me that I was rejecting.
But this video isn't about that. I’m going to talk about my spiritual journey, how it’s helped me, and the parts where it has not only hurt me, but also hurt those around me. Healing isn’t a binary, going from unhealthy to healthy; healing is a spectrum, and if you do too much of it, you can end up just as unhealthy as you were before.

In this clip, Dr Barrett talks about how other cultures have different understandings of emotion, while we don't view emotions and physical symptoms as connected.
On the growing mindfulness front, we’re told to be aware of our thoughts, and this often leads to spiritual bypass and experiential avoidance; on the emotional health front, we’re told to be true to ourselves, to be authentic, to not avoid our emotions, and this often leads to a fierce defence of our truths and our stories. How do we get in touch with our emotions, without getting lost in the stories that they come with, and without using our emotions as justification for our unhealthy patterns? Do we sit with our emotional stories and stew in them for hours? Or do we use mindfulness to silence our thoughts?
A healthy middle path is to be mindful of our emotions, to look at the physical part of our emotional experience closely, and to let them dissolve. Notice what sensations are arising in us. How do our challenging emotions feel, in our bodies? Can we experience what our bodies are feeling, without adding emotional concepts to them?
Let’s experience the feelings, closely, more than the narratives that come with them, without getting lost in the Dramatic Triangle framework we keep using to understand our experiences. Instead of feeding our thoughts with more storytelling, how can we offer ourselves some self-care, self-empathy, and self-soothing?
Lisa Feldman Barrett is one of the world’s leading neuroscientists, and a major figure in modern science’s understanding of emotion. Her book challenges a lot of the cultural baggage of our understanding of emotion. If you’re interested in these ideas, check out the full video:

Now, I’m super honoured that I’ve actually got the author with me, who is amongst the top 1% of cited scientists IN THE WORLD, and we’re going to discuss these ideas with more detail and - now that it’s not just me rambling here - with a bit more credibility as well.
This is huge for me. This is the direction I’d love to go, to really digest some of the most important and up to date ideas in science, and to talk with these authors and to share these talks with whoever wants to watch them. I was super nervous in speaking with her, as I’m more used to interviewing Sushi chefs than Neuroscientists, but I’m sure with practice I’ll get better at it.

Now, I took the idea of the Body Budget a bit far, and came up with some conclusions that push the limits of the metaphor. Thankfully, the author was kind enough to spend an hour with me to clarify some of these ideas, and then to really go deep with them.
This first part of the interview focuses on the body budget, and introduces the concepts of Allostasis and Prediction Error. In the second part of this interview, that's where we go really deep, and apply these ideas to language learning, Buddhism and mindfulness, behavior, Alexithymia, and the Glorious Circumplex. She's in the top 1% of cited scientists in the world. She really knows her stuff. And there's a lot in her books that I didn't cover. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been working on a video series for a book that I find really special. The next book in this series of videos I want to table is “How Emotions Are Made” by Lisa Feldman Barrett. “All About Love” talked about how open and honest communication are a vital element of any loving relationship, and “Nonviolent Communication” showed us how we can’t connect with others compassionately and lovingly if we’re speaking to them with judgment, blame, shame, criticism, advice, or moralizing. To connect with others, we need to talk about our feelings. But WTF is a feeling anyway? How do we have feeling? Why do we have feelings? If we’re going to talk about them in our relationships with others, I think it’d be useful to understand what they are, first and foremost.
Lisa Feldman Barrett is the world’s leading scientist when it comes to emotions and affect. She’s in the top 1% of cited scientists IN THE WORLD, and her book “How Emotions Are Made” is not only a super thorough examination of how our bodies make feelings, but it also is a very useful guide to undoing a lot of our misconceptions about feelings and emotions. We’ve got some outdated beliefs that need updating. I’m going to talk about that in my latest videos. Part 1 is on Eatyourkimchi, and Part 2 is on my new channel, @simonsbookclub.
I'm going to go over the Theory of Constructed Emotion, as opposed to the Classical idea of Essentialism. We'll be looking at some of the unhelpful metaphors of the past and present, and getting a deeper sense of the connection between the mind and the body, and hopefully come to a place where we can live more embodied than before.

I don't think people seriously consider how damaging their comments can be to others. The violence in people's language deeply impacts others, and doesn't just impact those who are considered "weak" or "not strong enough," “snowflakes” or "fragile." The language we use with others affects their emotions deeply, affects their body chemistries, and stays with them for years, to the point that some even internalize the message, and then cause violence to themselves. The things we say to others have long lasting impacts, and bigger impacts than we choose to acknowledge. It's not the receiver's fault for being impacted. I think it's time we look at the language we're using, if it's serving our goals, and if we're ethically and morally comfortable with the damage we're causing to others.9
Compassion and kindness are always available to us. Please be kind. You'll be surprised how much good it can do.

The video is on YouTube, in two parts. The first part is on Eatyourkimchi. In it, I’ll introduce the book, talk about what changes the book inspired in me, take on a new definition of love as suggested by hooks, and talk a bit about romanticism, possessiveness, and more.
Part 2 of the video is on my new channel @SimonsBookClub. There, I’ll talk about how applied hooks’ definitions of love to family, children, and most of all, myself. Self-love to me was very confusing, because I mostly saw it manifested as people hyping themselves up, and that for me was a bit too difficult to for me to practice sincerely. I only really understood self-love, and actually felt it, when I started using hooks’ ideas.
Also, I’ll talk a bit about polyamory, as this book has inspired me to be more open with my love.

I went to France recently, and got some fun footage of swimming with Fudgy in Lake Annecy, hiking with him in Montmin, and having some great French food with him as well, in Moulin du Gastronome, Clos de Sens, and a lovely guesthouse around Provence. I really enjoyed being creative again, and spent the last couple of weeks putting this video together, and I made something that I like that I wanted to share. I hope you like it too.

Additionally, I forgot to talk about my deleting of comments and blocking of people in the video, so let me address it here. As I mentioned in the video, I want to maintain my privacy. This means I don’t want matters that I didn’t openly discuss online to be shared by others, or discussed in the comments. Private information was shared without my consent. When this happens I feel invaded and unsafe. So I deleted comments that raised those points, and I blocked commenters who persisted in discussing them in my posts. Yes, I was deleting and banning, before I learned about the Hidden Words tab in Instagram’s Privacy section, where I set up auto-moderation to filter the comments on Instagram. Since Martina continually removed those filters, deleted the word list, and has been discussing my private matters openly on her social media channels, I see that my hope for privacy in this matter is no longer possible, and so I am addressing Hawaii. I’m sorry for those that I hurt in my attempts to maintain some privacy. I can see that I deeply hurt many members of the community, and I am truly saddened by that. Some of the commenters that I knew best felt betrayed, and I’m deeply sorry to have alienated them. I am working on improving where I direct my attention online.
I want to continue to share online, and maintain some boundaries. I’ve had viewers triangulate my home address in Japan based on the landmarks in pictures I posted online, been followed by fans in taxis, and my cohost has been doxxed. I really only feel comfortable posting pictures about my dogs lately because I feel so anxious on camera and in public as well. I would appreciate my privacy to be respected, and the body shaming and the death threats to stop. The safer everyone feels here, the sooner we can get back to more playful, lighthearted videos. I love it when people relate to the content personally or with curiosity. I like to know where people are from, and have always enjoyed engaging with long term members of the community.
To the commenters that are upset that I called some of the community toxic, I’m sorry if you thought I was referring to you. For the most part, you’re probably not the toxic commenters I referred to; I’m pretty sure you’ve seen them in the comments though. As I work to improve my perspective and shine light on more of the positive around me, like my puppies, I thank those members of the community who have been most supportive.
I’m very confused about people who are upset that I still post on my Instagram account. At the start of our divorce, while I was very emotional I did not post online, and I had no issue with Martina posting on our shared Instagram. I’ve never asked her to stop, or in any way have I disinvited her from posting on Eat Your Kimchi. She said she wasn’t going to post there, and continues to do so, and I’ve noticed commenters being confused about this as well. I would just like to move forward and continue sharing the channel as we agreed upon. Minus the harassment. There is space for everyone and their dogs. Cats too. Oh ya, and Turtles 🐢

Also, I wanted to share the new project I’m working on, called A Life With Friends. It’s a podcast I’m cohosting. We’re talking about mindfulness and meditation, and using that as our lens when we discuss topics like compassion, therapy, boundaries (which some of y’all need to learn about), connecting with nature, and ending relationships, amongst other topics. We’re trying to make it a bit different than what I’m used to hearing in podcasts: this isn’t us talking to each other and talking to you - the viewer - which I found kind of a weird dynamic. This is not a depressing video. In fact, it's the opposite. Before we welcome in 2021, I wanted to put up a positive video about coping with feeling low and being depressed using Build A Ladder as a coping method. I realized I never actually took the time to make a FULL video discussing this, so I wanted to show you what I've been doing as of late to add rungs to my ladder.
A few years ago I put up a video discussing how I cope with depression. It was a shocking video for those of you that see me as only a "happy" person, but many people are able to be happy while also fighting and struggling with sad thoughts and feelings. Despite struggling with dark thoughts and an overall depletion of happy brain juice (due to my chronic illness, I was born with Type 3 Hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndromes) I do consider myself a pretty positive person!
However, positive doesn't = always being happy. To me, it means being able to look at the world through a some what happy lens despite the struggles life deals to you. It isn't a FAKE happy where you pretend to be "ok" but it is an attitude of "no giving up" on life, I'm going to TRY and be happy! Things don't have to be going well for you to appreciate a sunset or the food in your mouth. But I believe that keeping "positive" is a skill we all have to work on.
I didn't go into detail about this in the video, but every single morning I wake up to an ocean of body pain. Everything hurts, and the adrenaline and chemicals coursing through my body effect my brain and my attitude. My brain tells me on the daily to GO BACK TO BED to GIVE UP. But I use Build A Ladder as a method of coping with this negativity.

Tim Hortons: many of you are going....WTF is that? Good ol' Timmie Ho Ho's is the Canadian go-to coffee/donut/breakfast/sandwich shop. Whether you like it or not, you're not Canadian if you haven't at least TRIED Timmies and formed an opinion.

Easy Crepe Recipe (from Alton Brown)
2 large eggs
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup water
3 tablespoons melted butter
1 cup flour
Oil for brushing the pan
1. Add all the wet ingredients (except the melted butter) to a blender and pulse one or two times. Add the melted butter and pulse once more.
2. Add the flour by heaping spoonful so it doesn't lump and blend for 8-10 seconds. Don't overdo the blending or the crepes will be rubbery. It's okay if there are a few little lumps in the batter, resist the urge to keep blending or whisking the sh*t out of that batter.
4. Put the batter in the fridge to come together. 30 minute minimum. If you rest it overnight and it seems reeeally thick, you can add a touch of water and whisk to thin it out.
5. Heat a non-stick frying pan on medium-medium hot. Be prepared to brush with oil between each crepe.
HOT TIP: Drop a little tester batter onto the oiled pan and if it burns or puffs up into a rippled looking tent shape the pan is way too hot.
6. Oil the pan, pour about 1/4 cup of batter into the centre of the pan while swirling the pan to spread the batter out into a thin circle. If it is a weird shape...that's okay :)
HOT TIP: If the batter slides and crumples up into the corners of your pan while swirling, you added too much oil to the pan.
7. Once the batter stops moving, it is cooking. You have to wait about 45 seconds and the edges will start to peel and look crispy. You can lift the edges with your spatula and peek underneath the crepe to see if it looks super pale or if it's a light golden. Golden = you're golden to flip!
8. Flip DAT SH*T!~ Oh yeah. You pro. As it cooks on the other side you can add toppings if you want them to melt. I like my cheese melty and my sugar all melty too, but you can make a stack of crepes and just build them later.
Cook that crepe for another 30-45 seconds and once it is golden on both sides you're done!
HOT TIPS:
Doing all sweet crepes? Consider adding a 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract or a smaaall squirt of honey/agave to the batter.
Savoury crepes? 1/4 tsp of salt or dried herb of your choice, rosemary is very nice.

For those of you that are frustrated by my lack of responding to other burning questions that you might have, please don’t let that frustration turn into anger towards me. It’s not that I’m not addressing speculations out of a disrespect towards you. If that’s your first guess, I’m telling you it’s the wrong guess: there are other reasons. There are some parts of my private life that I just don’t feel comfortable talking about yet.
I made this video because I did see that many were concerned about me. I wanted to make this video for them. And I wanted to just let people know that, even though this is a VERY huge transition in my life, I’m actually doing well in the face of it. I am doing better than I thought I would. I hope that’s the message people can walk away with, and not let their frustration out of curiosity taint that message. I’ll talk about other parts of my life only when I’m comfortable talking about them, and not a second before that, even under a deluge of pressure from others. I’m asking you: please be kind.

In the hunt for Japanese ingredients, my very good friend Miki takes me to J-Town, a Japanese shopping centre in Markham in the GTA. We share some silly stories from growing up together (I was always obsessed with video making apparently haha) and she makes me some delicious Japanese curry and cream corn croquettes. I hope you all enjoy this video, it made me smile the whole time.

Miki, for those of you that don't know, is my next door neighbour. We grew up together since we were 3 years old and her family introduced me to Japanese culture. I ate Japanese food for breakfast and as afterschool snacks, her dad taught me how to use chopsticks and how to properly make green tea, and I fell in love with onigiri at a young age. Miki's mom would make me a plate full of bite sized onigiri on my b-day. She's a lovely friend and I'm lucky to have met such a great person at such a young age :)
