PandaMonium Reviews Every U.S. Saturn Game
[Epilepsy Warning] NHL All-Star Hockey ft. The GFFFFFFFFF | Episode 15.1 of 246

This video is four hours and 40 minutes long.
At long last, let us sink our teeth into the rich history of an incredible racing game. Featuring a wealth of archived video, translated interviews and original source material, this review aims to tell the story of Sega Rally Championship for the Sega Saturn. Perhaps more amazing than its long lasting impact — is how much soul they managed to pack into a short arcade racer.
Huge thanks to Random for creating some original songs, just for this video! You can find the uncut songs here: youtu.be/4XaHxfHdY1c
A big thank you to SaturnDave for making the thumbnail.

So what exactly "killed" Sega? The troubling thing about this question is it really cannot be answered in a single video. What can be said is they lost quite a bit of money throughout the 90's. Thanks to the recent leak of the Sega FY1997 Brand Review, and translations of recent statements from former Sega of Japan execs, we now have a much more clear view of Sega's slow bleedout. This video seeks to summarize the important details of the document, how they link to the recent revelations from the SOJ execs, and tie them to the numerous other sources picked up over the years. This shows what went on behind Sega's doors throughout the 5th gen.

When I originally made a video about Bug, it was before I started interviewing developers and long before my research/video producing methods were further developed. Since that video was first made in 2016, I joined a podcast that would later interview Bug's lead developer, and personally interviewed devs for other games whose stories are tied to this game's history in some way. The story of Bug! goes much much deeper than five minutes. So seven years later, I present to you, this. Enjoy!
I will not be remaking all of my old episodes. If that were the case, I would die before reaching Magic Knight Rayearth. :)
My sincerest thanks to Twitter user OrangeRight for bringing the Bug Too proposal video to my attention.

System Sacom pulled way ahead of Pixar in the year 1995, releasing a sequel to its soul centered spooky journey through a trap/paradise/purgatory house. The Sega CD original is renowned as a pretty alright game, despite the poor quality of its full motion videos. Will this sequel please the souls of Saturn owners? Does the 32-bit plastic castle deliver with one of the first Sega IP sequels to reach the console?
Giant thank you to Peter Malek and Knight0fdragon for testing the North American release on consoles from other regions. Also a massive thank you to Jeff Lindblom for doing the universe a public service by converting all the Craig Stadler clips from Pebble Beach Golf Links into AVI files.

I referenced a part of his review of the game in this video. If you like this type of content, you will almost certainly like St1ka.
Special thank you to Pimpeaux as always for the help with release date info. Your work will forever impact each episode of this series.
Also shoutout to RoSoDude for showing me where to find beats used in the Metroid Prime soundtrack. One of those beats is mixed with the fireplace song from Mansion of Hidden Souls in the end texts.

It's amazing that this game exists. From the creators of Night Trap comes a spectacle reminiscent of the experimental 90's video game industry. Prepare yourselves for the ultimate masterclass of sports immersion — a full motion video football game. All of the action and controllability is comprised of live action video clips, featuring celebrity coach Mike Ditka shouting at you in between plays. Within its development are the tales of a dying company and the unique experience this provided its actors.

This is a journey through time analyzing the history of Virtua Cop, its Saturn port, and revelations on why Sega's 5th gen console performed the way it did. You will see source material that you cannot find anywhere else — woven into a tale straight from the trenches of 90's video game development.
Please note the chapters in this video. If you think sitting through a 4+ hour video sounds like too much of a task, then I encourage you to watch the chapters by themselves over time, like you would episodes of a TV show. Think of this like a streaming service dropping an entire season of a show all at once. Marathon it if you want, but don't feel like you must.
This was not a solo project. While it is true that I wrote and edited this 4+ hour piece, it would not be close to half of what it is without SamIAm and the tremendous help from other friends across the Saturn community. SamIAm is the translator working on the Princess Crown English patch (yes, he is still working on it). He translated a massive amount of Japanese source material for this video. Pimpeaux contributed mountains of her time to release date research for the overall series, sales data, and other assets used throughout. My partners with SHIRO! Media Group lent their time to QA, and their voices to some magazine interviews. Other voice overs were provided by the likes of SlappyBag9, Jordan Ryan of GBATemp, Greg Lacquerware, and Tit0 from Hall of Game. The SHIRO! crew consists of myself, Patrick Traynor, David Lee (SaturnDave), Peter Malek and Ben Wallace.
Homebrew developers XL2 and TrekkiesUnite118 helped me with understanding the inner machinations of SGL and proofreading parts of my script that go over technical details.
SHIRO! also lent their skills and connections for past interviews with Tom Kalinske, Chuck Tolman, and Paul Kerchen. I must also thank 90's devs Robert Leyland, Chris Kirby and Steve Snake, along with Jarrod Nichol of Project COE.
Random Stuff and May Rosencratz allowed me to use some of their original music for parts of this video. Random even made a couple of tracks just for this episode. Big thanks to both of you.
As for the others who took part... Well... Watch the video and find out who they are. :)
I extend my most heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to this project, and to all who have supported me over the years. Be it a financial contribution, shoutout, or kind message — you all mean a lot and continue to motivate me to carry on this passion project. Thank you for watching. Sorry for taking so long.
POST UPLOAD NOTES: Turns out the M2 Emulator I use (to play the arcade original) fakes transparencies instead of displaying mesh graphics. There is a way to turn this off, so I will be doing that in future videos.
DISCLAIMER: Virtua Cop is a 1994 arcade game in which the player assumes the role of a police officer, shooting several hundred fictitious criminals without question. This video is a journalistic analysis of that specific video game and other works it influenced. Any potential reference to modern United States politics, police brutality or the debate on western law enforcement reform is purely coincidental.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Steve Snake told me in a follow up email after watching this video, Kirby did in fact convert the Rob Northen code to PS1 as Kirby explained in the video. Snake said Rob would not have had a PS1 dev kit yet. He believes everything else he said about the code being applied to Saturn is accurate. He also said this: “One thing not mentioned was, the animation trick was used in all the console ports. The reason it worked so well is that there are only enough actual animations to update every 4th frame anyway. So apart from a possible 3 frame delay when you change directions, it still looks like the original.” He also said ALL Jam ports (except Jaguar and GameBoy) were made in the UK.
Chris Kirby responded in the comment sections here saying yes he did in fact convert the Rob Northen code, and that he remembers leaving Iguana UK between the release of Jam TE and College Slam. Slam came out in February 1996, about four months after TE’s Saturn port.
Welcome to... NBA JAAAM!!! Remember when I said this would be not as long as the Corpse Killer video? Turns out — that was a lie. This rabbit hole took me through four interviews, unearthed source material, and the bizarre relationship the NBA Jam arcade board may have with home appliances. On top of all this, new context on the Saturn vs PlayStation developer war is revealed within this tale of porting a basketball game to fifth gen hardware. Grab some popcorn, or tea, or maybe even some Jolt cola for what is the longest video I have ever edited... so far.
Some material referenced in this video:
NBA Jam (The Book) by Reyan Ali. It has DOZENS of interviews and loads of rich retro game history. If you are a fan of well researched arcade lore, then you will enjoy this book. If you are a big fan of NBA Jam, then you MUST read it. Big thanks to Ali for appearing in this video and helping with previously unearthed source material.

Translation from SamIAm of the V.R. Virtua Racing reviews [1995-12-22 issue, page 202]:
(Please keep in mind, these are quick and rough translations, giving us the general gist of what they're saying in the magazine.)
"Plentiful courses, plentiful cars, with everything from go-carts to F1 racers. The grand prix mode where you earn points as you go is quite exciting, and it's nice to be able to choose original Saturn courses. I just can't deal with how hard the courses are to look at. The way the point of view switches around depending on the circumstances as you race is impossible for beginners to deal with. I wanted the display to at least be easier to understand. The scant music is the same as the arcade, so I'm not going to say much about it, but I remember little in the way of it being enjoyable. Since you're able to choose your car, I wanted the F1 car to feel a little faster. (6) [written by Atsuko]
At a glance, it looks pretty, and it's fun with all the new courses they prepared. However, as someone who was in charge of [reviewing?] the Mega Drive, 32X and arcade versions, I can't accept how the controls feel different. Doing precise cornering is what was so fun about the original game, but the Saturn version feels like it has a tendency toward understeering, like you just can't turn. In conclusion, if this were an original game, I'd give it a 7 or 8, but since it's a port of a game as big as Virtua Racing, I'm subtracting 2. (6) [written by "London" Kobayashi]
Once upon a time, Yu Suzuki gathered a huge amount of data about cars, took the first 3D board from the biggest name in arcade games, and created the masterpiece that is the basis for this game. I was eagerly anticipating a port of this masterpiece, which drew the curtain on the present age of 3D. However, this Saturn port? Maybe it's because another company ported it, but despite it appearing similar, the control and the contents of the game are weak. The various new cars and courses, and the cool replay mode, are all perfectly enjoyable, but the more passionate fans will find it lacking. The load times are long, too. (6) [written by Uncle Jam]"

Digital Pictures is bringing its zombie shooting interactive movie to the Sega Saturn, Jamaican sidekicks and all. Let's go down the rabbit hole, showing what they spent millions of dollars on to make this full motion video game, and how the producers and actors brought it all together. You might even hear about a little known Sega CD game that made a permanent impact on the video game industry.
Major thank you to SEGAbits for allowing me to use their Tom Zito interview for this video. Their full interview can be found at this link, please check out their channel while you're there: youtu.be/hH-Lc5bUxuE
Massive thank you Brigett Butler for agreeing to do an interview. I really enjoyed hearing your stories, and will post the full interview in the near future.

It was possibly the closest Konami got in history to publishing a Parodius game in North America. A "deluxe pack" featuring near arcade-perfect ports of the second and third installments to this wacky Japanese shoot-em-up series was translated in English for both the Sega Saturn and Playstation. But in late 1995, promises turned false. This is a progression through the game's development and its wildest stories, going from "confirmed" to "canceled" in North America.

For the first time, Sega is giving western developers a wack at porting Virtua Racing, the arcade giant's revolutionary polygonal racing game. Time Warner Interactive ported dozens of games before, and had its fair share of titles released on Sega platforms. But this job is different. Chuck Tolman takes on the journey of getting this F1 fury into a Sega Saturn, complete with more than triple the content of the original.

It's the closest your Saturn will get to being elected mayor... unless your town has crazy politics and would willingly elect a 25 year old machine as its leader. The astoundingly successful city planning simulator, SimCity 2000, hit Saturn on October 11th, 1995. As one of its developers tells me — cramming this beastly line of code into a 32-bit powerhouse was not an easy task, made more difficult by (you guessed it) Sega.
Major thank you to Paul Kerchen for agreeing to do an interview with myself and Patrick Traynor. With that comes another special thanks to Patrick Traynor for bringing his programming knowledge into said interview.

Corrections: Its release date is actually November 23rd, 1995. It is not the first game to use deformable terrain. It is not the first fully 3D FPS, though I technically never said it was — just that it “might” be. It is not.

Sorry for uploading a video in this guerrilla style, it's not my norm. I just wanted you guys to see what's in the prototype. It hit the internet just a few hours ago.
Still working on the Ghen War review and will at worst have it uploaded by the end of September.

Interview starts at 3:36
It is okay for you to use parts of this in your article, video or other research project as long as you credit PandaMonium and provide a link to this full interview.
I'm still working on my review of Ghen War. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy this interview with its lead developer, Robert Leyland. In today's day and age, he's well known for his role in the Skylanders series. Before then, he and his team developed lots of titles for the Genesis and the Saturn, one of them being Ghen War.
Mr. Leyland gives a lot of interesting and new insight into what developing for the Saturn was like before and after it launched in North America. Ghen War was supposed to launch with the Saturn on September 2nd, 1995. They were told about the May 11th surprise launch two days before it happened. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Will this team of eastern outlaws bring the troubled machine to the top of Mt. Liang, or get buried in the tombs of the 5th gen?

I'm going with Septeber 1995 for the release month. Magazine ads began appearing in October with a Sega Visions review quote. Sega Visions says it came out in September: imgur.com/a/NGSVMGF
The game's files show a final build being completed on June 29th, 1995, so a September release is more than plausible. The American release date for Virtual Hydlide is poorly documented, much like the rest of the U.S. Saturn library.

Get ready for an adventure so realistic, its characters are real people. From the third person perspective, you are controlling something animated with pictures of a real life actor. The games of today aren't even this real looking! This Sega Saturn exclusive, developed by T&E Soft and published by Atlus for North America, would live on to be among the console's most... memorable games? That's a word we can use to describe Virtual Hydlide accurately. Memorable.

A Mahjong video game? In America??? The answer might surprise you! This adaptation of China's solitaire Mahjong game rapidly became a popular hit in Japan, but the roots of this video game series are firmly planted in the United States. Will this fly to the skies of success like the sparrows it symbolically represents, or will it forever rest on the dusty shelves of Toys R' Us and K-Mart?

PHOOM... CLACK. CLACK-a-clakclaclakclack... clack... You hear that? That's the sound of Sega using third parties to hustle cold hard cash from the side pockets of video game players. Special thanks to Robert Leyland for agreeing to do an interview with me. The full interview will be uploaded closer to the release of the Ghen War review. When I interviewed him, I thought Ghen War came out much earlier, so I was anticipating doing that review much sooner.
Soar into freedom with Sega as they try to blow apart the upcoming competition from Sony. Black Fire is one of the Saturn exclusives originally planned to launch with the console in September, but its third party developers were some of many who got no warning of the May 11th surprise release.

This is the reboot for Reviewing Every U.S. Saturn Game. Any video in this series with the word NEW in the title is current and up to date.
Welcome to the series where I review every single Sega Saturn game released in North America by order of release date. I made a spreadsheet with all the games satakore.com has as American releases, listing them off by order of release date, including sources. All the games are narrowed down to the month they came out in the U.S.
