Shrimp and Noodles and Redfish, Oh my!zoffinger2026-09-21 | Shrimp and Noodles and Redfish, Oh my!Deflating the iATAKzoffinger2024-05-13 | If storage or portage is a problem for anyone who wants to fish and own their own kayak, this could be the trick. The Wilderness iATAK 110 is very impressive for an inflatable. I have shown it on the water before, but that's not the only place this vessel shines. I figured I'd show the behind the scenes part that often goes unshared. Deflating and folding up this portable fishing machine deserves some attention too. I have mentioned before how a goal of mine is to use this shop's main, vertical space as a place for active jobs only. That perhaps comes from filming so often in the past years. I have trained myself not to use the sd card in the camera as storage. It took a long time to build that skill of data management. Nowadays, I am usually very good about moving files to an external drive and freeing up the GoPro for capturing new video. -- You can find Marty on Facebook here - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishingWorkshop 012 Ideas Take Shapezoffinger2024-05-07 | Once in a great while, a project gets a hold of my interest so much, that I find that I roll out of bed with extra enthusiasm. The days end too quickly. I want to continue long after the sun quits on me. Meals are often forgotten. Even paddling a kayak didn't compare in interest to this new obsession. Not even a tweaked back could prevent me from pushing forward. My mobile workshop has turned into one of those projects. From the initial thought that a trailer could be a great way to store things and get my silver truck back in the kayak business, to actually finding one for a good price and close by on Marketplace, to this new revelation I had while sitting and thinking which emerged on paper. This design made me smile and pine rather excessively for actually seeing it come to fruition. I've had several projects in my life where I saw it in my head first and liked what I saw so much, that I couldn't stop until it was done. This one is especially nice because I get to share it with the world. -- Follow me on Facebook - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishingWorkshop 011 The Hip Bones Connected to the Thigh Bonezoffinger2024-05-04 | When you're starting from scratch, it's a good idea to think things through. Before you ever drive that first nail, twist a screw, cut a board, etc. you must have a plan or else you are likely to regret it later. It's ok to amend your vision as you go, but dang if it's not just plain silly to set off for the store if you don't have directions or already know the way. Am I right? I can think of many times I have attacked big goals both ways. Prepared and otherwise. And the former, for sure is the better way. Then, once you're committed (hopefully not in a mental institution) you just keep at it. As long as it's not painfully obvious that your plan is shit, then, 'just keep swimming'. Untold amounts of times in my life, I have achieved pretty great things because I kept at it. Not necessarily because I was exceptionally skilled. Simply because I had more patience then the average Joe. What do you think? I hope you enjoy watching me go through this mental process as I plan out my mobile workshop's interior, as I reveal how it is all connected. Every 'bone' interacting with the next. -- You can find Marty on Facebook here - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishingWorkshop 010 Roof Truss Wafflezoffinger2024-05-02 | Some projects I work on feel like skiing down a mountainside. You have to adjust to the curves and dips as they come to you. Yet, I still get on the lift thinking that I can somehow imagine all the twists and turns before I even see them. Perhaps that is the grand idea. Envision your goal. And bend to the currents that fight too hard. As a boater and a kayaker, I have found myself in a pickle once or twice. But a level head got me through to the other side without harm every time. Often times, the clearer path only came after some reflection. STOP! Sit. Think. OK, move on. Then, there it is. Your goal achieved. Some take years. Some, a few days. And if you're trying to figure out the map on your phone as you're driving, you better figure if you're supposed to stay on the highway or merge off QUICK! Haha. And everything in it's place. That makes it so you can find stuff when you need it. As is, the new shop is a disaster. That is as expected I guess since the new space is still getting put together. But this chaos will not do for very long before my eyes start to twitch. So, I put up some shelves and hung some stuff up. I did this knowing that eventually it would all have to come down again. Quite soon possibly. But this effort would do two things. One, it got stuff immediately off the floor. And two, it gave me a visual idea of what I might build for a more permanent basis. It would tell me if having tools in a certain spot was convenient or if they were taking up valuable real estate. I can tell you this, I certainly decided, thanks to this step, that some stuff had gotten hung in prominent places and never got used. And other more important stuff I found I was constantly digging out from a corner or a low shelf. So, what you see in this video does not last long. Perhaps a few short days later, I was taking everything down again. But it told me what I needed to know. As a doorstop, an aid to keeping the weather out, and will also push the doors back a little into the frame of the truck. The further the doors tuck back, the less the dirt and junk from the trees should accumulate and the rain might just not be so inclined to enter the gap at the top. Recessing the doors will hide any slight warping as well, just in case the braces can't keep back any desires of the frames to twist. Though in that regard, I am happy about the use of cement board and Starboard. Both of those should not have the same propensity to get bent like wood does. Who knows? The new trailer doors start to take shape. Between my own indecision over the design, stopping progress to film, explain every step and the constant puppy interruptions, the process is taking a long time. But that is life. Is it not? Life is the little things. The minutiae. The plans. The details. The mistakes. In an attempt to bring you all of that and share as much of the process as I can, as if you were there yourself, I mean to include as much of the small details as I can. I hope you find it entertaining. -- You Can Find Marty on Facebook here - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishingWorkshop 001 Door Destructionzoffinger2024-03-21 | Step one in the construction of my new shop was to get to a point that I can secure the inside from weather and theft. No space is worth a darn if the stuff you put inside it gets wet or walks away. So, the doors were a priority. I looked up materials like metal and plywood and the costs were outrageous! Designing something from junk I had laying around crossed my mind, but at some point, this trailer might find itself rolling down the public roads and I did not want it to appear like it was a pile of trash, slapped together. Nor did I want to compromise the safety of others that could be hurt if something were to give way and fall into traffic. Thus, the doors were going to be built in such a manner as to appear, and operate as if they were a stock part of the trailer. That meant building from new, strong materials. The cement board was heavy but cheaper then wood. And the nearby lumber yard I went to did not carry plywood. So, rather then drive to another location, I let fate determine the material for me. The weight of the doors did not concern me anyway, because the rollup door was Heavy! And with it's removal, including all the the metal that made it work, the difference the new doors would make would be negligible. -- You can find Marty on Facebook here - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishingBig New Project!zoffinger2024-03-18 | This is going to be a fun one! A new obsession. A restoration. Some installations. Some fabrications. All born from a revelation. That being that I am a maker! And I haven't had a space of my own for a long time now. Looking back; turning my silver F150 into a mobile shop was awesome and amazing while I traveled to and from North Carolina after my Great (ish) Loop trip. But having tools, some of which I've had for 30+ years now, and a few that got handed down from long-gone relatives, just sitting in that truck while I paddled around... I couldn't imagine leaving them all on the side of the road to be stolen. So it REALLY dug into my kayak adventuring. Which explains a bit of my absence from Youtube there for a bit. Well, I think I finally got it figured out and can get back to where I was some years ago. With the added benefit of a lot more content for anyone that appreciate seeing a project born, nurtured and (hopefully) blossoming into something....well, I want to say AWESOME! But we'll have to wait and see if it turns out half as good as I can imagine it will. Stay tuned!

And if you think this is just a toy for kids and recreational fishermen, remember this: Once upon a time it was thought that fishing from ANY kayak was a bit of a joke. I remember though, showing up one year to the largest fishing trade show in the world (iCast) and seeing giant posters hanging outside showing people fishing from... KAYAKS! I was SO proud! The world had come to realize that this sport was no joke. Now, some years later, the inflatable world of fishable kayaks is coming into maturity. Drop stitch tech is allowing companies to build boats that are as rigid as you can dream of, while still having the ability to deflate and fold away to be stored by folks that might not have room for a hard-shell kayak. And the Wilderness iATAK is proving that not only is the idea achievable, but can be done VERY well. You may not realize it now, but inflatables are here to stay. And the first time you try one, you'll understand why. Hopefully this video will give you a glimpse into how fun and real, fishing from a 'blow-up' boat can be! And BOY! Did he load it on! Extra cheese, pickles, onion...wait. Wait! He forgot the FISH! What the heck?! Robb White wrote in his book 'How to Build a Tin Canoe' (one of my favorites) about his 'Rule of Joy'. 'Simply put, it says, "The important thing ain't comfort, it's joy." Joy in boats is inverse to their size. When they get big and full of engines, batteries, toilets, stoves, and other comforts, there just ain't as much room for joy.' Now you might (rightfully) point out that I am guilty of breaking that rule with my beloved Pelican Intruder X3, with all the gadgets I crammed onto it's 12 foot nine inch length (I added a bit to the end to accommodate the three 5-horse motors) and it's 48 inch beam. But this whole video exercise is probably (mostly) aimed at myself. Kinda like looking at your reflection in the mirror, wishing you could lose a few pounds, while munching on a candy bar at the same time. I DO think that this endeavor of mine has been a recession from joy while in search of perfection. And, yes. I DO admire the gizmos that enable me to do the things I didn't know I needed to do way back when I was first introduced to the flats. I'd suggest to anyone that they should try them out for themselves and indeed! Here I am, doing just that. The reason for that juxtaposition just might be intended to teach a lesson in excess. A necessary path (for some) so that the pendulum of life can eventually swing back towards simplicity. Or just maybe, you might also follow this path, try a taste of this sickness and never turn back. After all, there is definitely a distractive joy in playing with toys when the fish aren't biting. -- You can message Marty on Facebook facebook.com/lovekayak.fishing

That little, powerful Bixby motor can be seen here: http://bixpy.comThe Goldilocks Kayak Motorzoffinger2024-01-03 | The Bixby kayak motor is so far, the best fit for a kayak that I have ever used. It's too easy to overpower a tiny plastic boat that is only designed to go 5 or 6 miles an hour tops. For the backwater, protected areas that I like to explore and fish, you don't need much. Surely there are some that might argue that you don't need ANY motor. The purest paddlers often say that. But if you have any physical issue that prevents you from getting on the water for any length of time, you might find that opinion to be more of an option. A rule that can be bent so you don't spend another Saturday on the couch. No motor that I've found so far is absolutely perfect for various reasons, but this little fits juuust right.

It's time for me to pass that baton to someone else and start a new era.Pelican Mode Catch and Cookzoffinger2023-08-29 | I remember a time when the fish were plentiful. Schools of Jacks would meander about, destroying bait in impressive displays, and bringing home a meal was not that hard to do after a short time on a kayak. Dang! If I'm not sounding like an old man, but even the younger crowd of anglers in Tampa seem to be experiencing the same thing. Perhaps it's a just cycle like so many things in life go through. Or perhaps I've been relying on artificial baits too much? I went out for a few days with the old standby live bait to test the waters. Shrimp could always get me a tug back in the day. And after drowning a bunch, for a bunch of hours, I got a big fat skunk for my efforts. The next day, my little wriggly baits had turned pink and stinky and still failed to slay the competition. One small redfish did play along early on, which only led to me sittin there, floating and hoping in vain for a bunch more hours. Just when my expectations were spent, I remembered my buddy Steve's many successes trolling a paddletail on a jighead. Many folk actually have told me that they seldom paddle along without dragging a lure behind them. 'Just in case'. So, before I gave up the good fight, I worked the artificials that have done me right for so long. Even back in my earliest days of kayak fishing, I'd marvel at how, especially trout, would bite a lure, even when it was doubtful that they were hungry. It was like a territorial thing. They couldn't stand to see such an arrogant little thing waltzing past their spot like it owned the place. And WHAM! Just as it was back then, my little paddle-tailed piece of plastic did the trick. It would seem that fish might learn after years of getting fooled by shrimp, that they ought not eat them! But they haven't yet developed the restraint of willpower to resist the quick little fake lure that presents itself just right. Some things never change. I'm glad I have moved up in the world enough to have access to such nice and comfortable kayaks. And I wonder about where the Jacks are. And why the bite doesn't seem to be as good as it once was. I doubt myself during those times. But when I AM lucky enough to bring home a fish for dinner, I know for sure a technique that always works for cookin em up! -- You can find Marty on Facebook here- facebook.com/lovekayak.fishing

I'm not sure what that means, other then half of everything I video'd looked cold and blue. The air temperature at iCast, on the other hand, was Hot Hot Hot because it was again held in Orlando, Florida. I hadn't attended since 2019 and it was wonderful to see some old friends that I had met there before. I'm sure some people there are most proud of the big deals they brokered, but for me, it's the relationships with good people that I cherish the most.

Go ahead. Make your kayak look fancy. Or better yet, spend a lot of money on one that is rigged up, right from the factory. See if I care. Or better yet, take it out and see if you catch more fish because it's got that bling. In my experience, there is WAY too much emphasis these days on appearances. I can tell you for sure that both kayaks you see in this video are pretty awesome. But there aint NO substitute for time on the water. Perhaps the real benefit to a posh, fashionable, expensive, luxurious, elegant paddle-craft is the fact that if it makes you happy and comfortable, then you will probably spend more time on the water. And THAT really is the key to success (so they say) I for one, have spent LOTS of time on the water and still, I have days that are rough. When the fish just don't cooperate. And yeah. I guess having a soft, carpety (is that a word) Getaway or a giant, tank-like Recon with a seat like a lazy-boy, is best when it is under your butt for hours and hours. So, I encourage everyone to get these kind of kayaks because they have some very good features which could get you to spend more time paddling. But if you just leave it on the side of the house or in the garage, then you're never gonna have an epic day. And even if occasionally you don't have an epic day, if you do better then your friend, you can remind him constantly about that day you caught a fish and he didn't!

Obviously, it was designed to eventually be outfitted with flush mount rod holders and there are other spots seemingly meant to nestle the tools of the fisherman, but it has been thus far marketed as a 'recreational' S.U.P. Kayak hybrid by it's creators. Far as I'm concerned, I found that even with zero DIY'ing, the Getaway easily comes in as one of the best fishing platforms I have ever paddled on the water. Us Floridians might be considering staying inside soon because of the intense heat that summer brings, but it is still the time for swimming and barbeques, and boating among other fun stuff. If you're planning on having folks over to spend time in the yard, a picnic table is the classic place to take it easy and hang out with friends and family. And if your going to get out on the water, a classic, simple way to do it is by kayak. Pelican is going to help kick off the season by giving away some kayaks, sups and outdoor accessories. I'll share the link as soon as it goes live. Hopefully in the meantime you're already set up to go paddling and the weather where you are is wonderful. And if you would like to build a picnic table of your own, the following link is a great place to start... http://www.diygardenplans.net/diy-classic-picnic-table.htm

The Sentinel comes with a low, basic seat. I wanted to see if my buddy who is average size (around 200lbs) would be able to paddle comfortably without the kayak feeling too tippy. He said, it only took a few minutes to get used to and he didn't think about it for the rest of the day. He also said, he probably wouldn't have stayed out as long if he had the thinner, original seat. So, success! AND we were able to catch a bunch of fish also. What a triumph of a day :D A quick note on the design of the American Flag kayak (as Rich and I have come to know it) Pelican has always strived to design kayaks that were not only well built, but also look beautiful. This boat was lent to me to test it's durability and how well it would deal with the harsh Florida sun. It is considered a prototype, not meant for sale. I am always impressed by their ability to churn out boats that are real works of art and I hope someday that kayaks like this one can be offered for sale to the public. For now, it is a 'one of a kind'. Sorta like yours truly! -- Follow me on: Facebook - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishing

Before I die, I feel a need to test myself and see if that is something I can really do. Probably not on an island, but on a heavily wooded lot somewhere in the middle of nowhere. When I came to Florida in December of 2000, it was a wonderful break from the bustle of Brooklyn, NY. But as expansion spreads everywhere, Tampa over the past two decades started to get crowded and traffic'y reminiscent of where I grew up. Now I think it's time to step back again. This time, REAL far. I think living in the woods is something I can not only achieve, but something I could excel at and enjoy. I know it can be a freedom that few people ever get to experience. The search has begun for my own hunk of nature. Something unspoiled. A blank canvas that I can shape into a home amongst the trees. Will it ever happen? It's hard to know. Will I crack and turn into a crazy hermit that is unfit to mix in today's modern society? I feel some days that I'm already halfway down that path. Either way, it's a fun dream that I felt was fit to share on this channel. -- Follow me on: Facebook - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishing

I tested a couple different styles on different style boats and was rather shocked how well they preformed. I learned it's important to match up the cart to a kayak that it fits. Not only that, but the rest of the day worked out great too. Gotta love it when life's plans come together. -- Follow me on: Facebook - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishing

Or any sane person for that matter. But then again, I never claimed to have all my ducks in a row. That being said, IT IS fun to mess around every now and again. That's how great ideas are born. THIS however, might lie in the category of interesting, but ultimately not worth the effort. One motor (especially wired with a proper breaker) would surely move the canoe along just fine. And wouldn't freak out the battery as much. And would lift up out of the water easier when it got shallow... ALRIGHT! I admit it. This idea might just be dumb. But somehow, it still brings a smile to my face. Hopefully it brought you a few minutes of joy too.
On another note, this day I had filmed myself out there and then played around with those trolling motors, but I caught no fish. And the 'build' didn't take all that much effort. It smelt like it had all the fixings of a skunk and a less-then epic day. Many times like that have wound up the way of rotten footage that never sees the light of social media. But stories like that aren't always losers. We all have had days that didn't go as planned. Some that might have involved a bunch of drama. But that IS life. And spun just right, it makes for memorable times that eventually become the 'good ol' days' that we reflect back upon. Don't let them all go by without realizing you're living those 'good ol' days' right now! If you're reading this, thanks for joining me for this episode of real life and hijinks. It WAS fun. Shortly afterwards I caught a few real nice ones but I feared adding them to what I had already shot seemed forced. Like extra spice to an already delicious steak. I don't know. Maybe I worry a bit too much about continuity. Or story narrative. Maybe big fish ARE more important? However, in the past I have watched a few youtubers that caught very nice fish. Over and over and over... That makes for a nice day of fishing but not necessarily a video that is fun to watch for the viewers. I genuinely had a great time fishing this day from my little Argo kayak. The good bite had something to do with it, but it was also because I was loving that little boat. So, the last video was dedicated to that and this video (with very little editing) is all about a few nice snook. Raw and simple. -- Follow me on: Facebook - facebook.com/lovekayak.fishing

Certainly not meant for fishing. Yet I took it to the max and caught lots of fish from it. Nowadays, I am lucky enough to have kayaks that don't need all the crazy modifications that my first yak did. Pelican makes some incredible fishing machines like the Catch series boats, but somehow I find myself drawn to a couple of recreational kayaks that they offer that were never meant for anglers. The Getaway, which was never intended to be fished from, is my favorite. But for half the price and half the weight, the Argo 100 is a surprise second place. It is an astonishingly capable kayak. And the older I get, the more I like it simple. Easy to lift. No drive to increase the draft. Etc. Etc. The Argo 100XR has all the ease of a small, simple kayak and a wonderful seat to keep you dry and comfortable all day. Sorry to sound like a commercial, but this little gem deserves all the praise it gets. As a one-time kayak dealer, I know Pelican would rather me sell the high-end kayaks that fetch higher profit margins, but the truth is that you don't have to spend a lot to get out on the water and have a great time...FISHING! Even if it's a recreational kayak. I gave away the first Argo 100XR that I ever owned. This one is MINE! Haha. I hope to have it for a long time.
