A challenge for viewers who disagree on any of the main points: Find me a pundit who avoids portraying unemployment, including other similar “good to keep busy” stuff, as unalloyed goods. Hell, find me an influential public intellectual who follows in my footsteps here.

To restate my main gripe: All these people (notably the pundits, likely due to inadequate levels of imagination) have allowed the point-systems they track, obsess over and speak of to game them and their minds. They then persuade the public, a share of which who might’ve otherwise had a shot at escaping the gamified circus, but ultimately won’t seeing as there’s nothing visible to imaginatively aspire to. Because dullards dominate the airwaves as well as the online silos. At no point in this video do I say or suggest lower unemployment is all bad. They’re saying (or at least always portraying) higher unemployment as all bad. Overton Window 101, because it’s all they know; it’s the conceptual water they swam in all their lives. They agree unanimously; the child who daydreams in class errs necessarily. This to me is sick and I spit on anyone who supports or fails to challenge the pathological mindset after having it explained to them.

When I say the epistemically cautious observer will take his cues from IR theorists and committed FP wonks, I’m thinking about this last link and the sheer volume of these documents. I’ve not read through it. I’d wager that 99.99% of the people spouting strong views and binary takes on which side is worse overall haven’t read it either. The few people who store so much of this in their heads truly are in a better position to tally treaty violations and other legal breaches. But they know not to waste time arguing with ghouls on twitter and the like. And that’s not to say that the Violation Tally is the most important thing here. It never was, which partly explains why I’m not slavishly devoted to reading and memorizing the contents of these mountainous texts and signed commitments. They’re important, but the fact that anti-Western actors play negative sum games more frequently (and always remorselessly) is more important!

Legal positivism is another problem I should’ve named and targeted in the video. Technically, legal doctrines like positivism are meant to implicate each nation’s internal legal affairs only, but that’s no reason to ignore their (unspoken) distortions of how people think about interstate conflict abroad. In my experience arguers under the grip of legal positivism don’t realize they’re influenced by it. Nothing else explains the common resort to “West ignores laws all the time” mouthed as a checkmate, or as a plea for non-instrumental blame equivalence (or worse). When you encounter this, you must explain that the speaker is implicitly sold on a very odd and, I think, indefensible view of the law’s role in human life. A legal constructivist, for example, easily dispenses with such claims. Obviously getting the normative underpinnings of law right carries massive implications on “The West vs. The Rest” and how that debate is best approached. Arguers don’t appreciate how fine-grained this pre-factual part of the debate is.

This doesn’t mean legal constructivists are necessarily forward-looking in terms of how they view law’s relation to moral and other types of normative force. Constructivists may differ on all that, just as any of us can believe in Cosmic Justice (read: recognition of Just World Fallacies) and still differ on the question of Cosmic Justice being necessarily forward-looking, backward-looking, or a blend of both (i.e. telic/deontic particularism). Arguably legal formalists can use their own theories to nip positivist distortions in the bud in ways that differ from how I as a constructivist would. We might rename legal positivism “Legal Totalism”, adding some rhetorical bite to its much needed critique. A number of other non-positivistic schools can offer their own sturdy bulwarks against equivalence talk. But it’s hard to be convincing here unless people realize that competing legal frameworks exist, exert pressure on their pre-factual judgment, and can be named and debunked. Most importantly, the more reliable ones are not just applicable at home but abroad (critically now, given the world we’ve inherited). I should’ve said all of this in the video, but there was too much other ammo I had to fire. I’m broaching all this in the low-bar because I don’t want to tack on additional recordings to include yet another piece of the puzzle as that makes the video ever-longer and it’s already one hour longer than I had intended before pressing rec. I tamely resent thinkers who reach explicit long-termist "X-Risks over S-Risks" conclusions and who are aware of exactly what it is that they’ve elbowed out in doing so. But it’s always worse when the people thinking along similar enough lines don’t appear to even grasp that there is an S-Risk factor against which they ought to be balancing their X-Risk mitigation baselines, and ideally reconsidering them in favor of S-Risk mitigation. From everything I’ve observed, Extinction Rebellion types come with the latter muddled or full-fledged unthinking approach.

But this is not why I brought them up during the video, as will be clear for those who heard me out. Still, it’s important to not lose sight of fact that the effects of Climate Change could easily lead to a significant spike in S-Risks, completely apart from how those same CC forces go on to shape the attendant X-Risks. So it’s ethically sensible to be somewhat concerned with CC, as was during the December portion of this video. CC is a worthy concern, even though the loudest cheerleaders who demand sweeping action against CC are largely the conceptually muddled types observed in movements like Extinction Rebellion.

Murray invoked health/unhealth, but the author here shows that she is far from unmindful of these things. Her concerns are genuine, and remain so even if she is ultimately wrong about poor health outcomes being (non-trivially) bolstered by, or linked to, the usual Axes Of Oppression set-in-stone narratives. These probable falsehoods are, if nothing else, superior to pure obliviousness.

Didn’t know that Twitter also deleted him until I went to his site. Everything I said about YouTube’s TOS applies to Twitter’s TOS. Having violated none of it, he should be reinstated. The only petition I could find involving him is a 6 year old one, so if anyone knows about a newer one, point me to it and I’ll include it here. It’s 14 years of work in this case. Wiped out. Study compares the U.S. to 14 other nations economically similar to it (affluent, industrialized, tech-savvy workforces). It examined, for that period “15 of the 18 most affluent OECD-member democracies with populations of at least three million”. The remaining nations (Austria, Japan, and New Zealand) were “not included due to lack of adequate poverty data”. More importantly, this is the only cross-national study that employs an absolute measure of poverty to gauge the pros/cons of welfare programs and other anti-poverty policies. Other cross-national studies employ relative measures of poverty (and run into predictable methodological duds as a result, as the authors explain).

“Once again, American transfer programs do least of the nations in this comparison group to help low-income families with children. A substantial fraction of the variance in non-elderly cross-national poverty rates appears to be accounted for not by the variation in work, but by the cross-national variation in the incidence of low pay, as shown in Figure 2. Because the United States has the highest proportion of workers in relatively poorly paid jobs, it also has the highest poverty rate, even among parents who work half-time or more. On the other hand, other countries that have a significantly lower incidence of low-paid employment also have significantly lower poverty rates than the United States.”

Includes absolute as well as relative/positional poverty figures pre and post welfare. If Molyneux and fans of statelessness wish to abolish all such programs, being charmingly oratorical about the ‘failures’ won’t convince anyone who’s even faintly aware of the above. Opponents must demonstrate with *better* data why the trends are negative rather than positive. But they’re not even trying, because it’s not about the data. Opponents of anti-poverty programs decided what they like and dislike long ago.
