Design and Engineering of 8701 Replacement Hey Birt! 2020-08-23 | In this video we take a look at the process of the designing and engineering for a MOS8701 clock chip replacement. Luckily, another YouTuber, Frank, IZ8DWF, had done a lot of the work and found a more modern clock generation chip that would work. Our task was finding a way to design a PCB that was small enough to fit into the C128 without modifying the C128 and that would ‘just work’ in an NTSC or PAL computer. We cover the things that worked, the things that did not and how the problems were solved one by one. We also cover the building of the PCB and even show off the testing jig which was designed to make sure they work perfectly.As it turned out needing to machine a fixture to put a ‘Z’ bend in the legs did not make this an easy project to do from scratch for many folks. The original Sharp CE-158 interfaces are rare, expensive and limited to 2400bps. We created the CE-158X as a modern higher speed replacement. With a solid transfer speed of 19200bps and an experimental 38400bps it takes far less time to transfer programs. We also incorporated a second serial port with a USB interface and the parallel port is now bidirectional. Alps Y Axis Gears Test 1 Hey Birt! 2023-07-20 | A quick test of a newly printed Y-Axis, anti-backlash, gearset for the Alps printer mechanisms. I mentioned in the video that the fitment between two gears was too tight and prevented offsetting for the proper anti-backlash effect. Turns out it was operator error; I was trying to rotate the inner gear the wrong direction. Silly me.

Easy TRS-80 M100 (and NEC PC-8201a) factory RS-232 mod 40 years late! This was released as TSB 100-001 almost 40 years ago. The early M100s had too large a currently limiting resistor in the RS-232 output lines which caused compatibility problems with some other TRS-80 products as well as other RS-232 devices. We discover what the problem is, we apply the modification as per the bulletin, and test the results to see how it performs. We also find this same modification also applies to the NEC-8201a which uses the exact same RS-232 circuit design and has the same problem.
