Intelligence SquaredAlastair Campbell knows a thing or two about creating change in British politics. Often described as the second most powerful figure in Britain during the Blair years, he was pivotal in leading New Labour to victory in 1997 and worked alongside Blair as his closest confidant and strategist through three terms in power. In recent years Campbell has become a podcasting sensation as the co-host of The Rest is Politics podcast, dissecting what’s gone wrong in British politics – and more – with former Conservative Party minister Rory Stewart.
In February 2024 he came to Intelligence Squared to discuss what to do about the chaos of current British politics. Drawing on his latest book But What Can I Do? He explored what he sees as the radicalisation of the Tory party and whether Keir Starmer has what it takes to be the first Labour leader since Tony Blair to lead Labour into government. He also discussed the ‘Centrist Dad’ label that has been attached to him by the media and to centrist politicians like Starmer himself: has the time now come for centrists to take control of Britain?

Do you want to better understand your colleagues, family, partners and friends?
Unlike many self-help authors, the acclaimed behavioural expert Thomas Erikson has sold millions of books worldwide by giving advice on how to better understand the people around us — rather than just ourselves.
Best known for his internationally bestselling book 'Surrounded By Idiots', Erikson devised a simple yet revolutionary method of understanding human behaviour with his four-colour system of categorising personalities as either red, blue, yellow and green. Each colour represents different traits: bossy, analytical, friendly and optimistic.
In October 2024 Erikson spoke to author and broadcaster Carl Miller to discuss his theory of human personality and his latest book 'Surrounded By Liars'. Erikson reminded us that companies and organisations are full of humans who think, communicate, function differently, and explain how we can improve our understanding of other people to advance our own careers.

#IntelligenceSquared #IQ2 #IntelligenceSquaredPlusDEBATE: Is Free Speech Under Threat? (Part 1)Intelligence Squared2024-10-11 | Join this channel to get access to perks: youtube.com/channel/UCaqcvH8EvUtePORpN03jLMg/join ------- Is free speech under threat? Many liberals believe that in recent years we have seen an erosion of the right to air unpopular opinions without the risk of being cancelled. We are in an ever-intensifying shutting down of conversation, they maintain, with constituencies on both the left and the right demanding that opinions they don’t like be declared out of bounds, socially, morally or legally. Today this dangerous trend is escalating with the help of populism and social media. We must reverse course now if we want to protect our most precious freedoms.
But some argue otherwise: that the so-called free speech crisis is completely a fiction. What we’re really seeing is a rebalance of power in elite institutions where privileged groups are being held to account for their words by others who have been historically excluded and marginalised. This is nothing more than the righting of wrongs, this side of the argument maintains. Besides, the very notion of freedom of speech is flawed – because the powerful have always enjoyed those freedoms more than the powerless, and so equating so-called cancel culture and no-platforming with state censorship is to fundamentally misunderstand (or wilfully misconstrue) what the concept of free speech was originally designed to protect.
Who’s right and who’s wrong? In October 2024, we launched the first instalment of Intelligence Squared’s new book series THINK AGAIN, published in partnership with The Bodley Head. Our authors – CEO of PEN America Suzanne Nossel and historian Charlotte Lydia Riley – debated the state of free speech today live on stage.

Paul Johnson is the economist who has set the terms of so much political debate over the past few decades in Britain. Having served as Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies since 2011, his expertise on matters of public spending and global economic trends have provided invaluable insight to the public and policymakers alike. Johnson’s column for the Times, as well as his acclaimed Austerity Audit for Radio 4, continue to define public discourse on economic policy and its implications.
In October 2024 Johnson brought his expertise to the Intelligence Squared stage to reflect on a year of seismic change and assess the impact of the 2024 general election on the country’s economic future. Does Starmer have what it takes to grow the economy? How can Britain hope to compete with innovation in tech and AI on the global stage? What shape should defence spending take in an increasingly volatile world, and how can we begin to tackle domestic issues such as child poverty, cost of living, a crippled NHS and a stubborn housing crisis?

How many women artists do you know? Visit any gallery of note and you would be forgiven for coming up blank. Despite the work of activist groups and scholars alike, women are still remarkably absent from the history of art.
Historian and broadcaster Katy Hessel wants to change that. In September 2024 she came to the Intelligence Squared stage in conversation with Pandora Sykes to write women back into art history. Discussing her bestselling book The Story of Art Without Men, she paid homage to the greats such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Frida Kahlo, Hilma af Klint, Tracey Emin and Kara Walker while also shining a light on lesser known figures such as Lavinia Fontana, thought to be one of the first women in Western art to paint female nudes in 1595.
Spanning over five centuries from the Cornish coast to Manhattan, Nigeria to Japan, this is the story of art for our times – one with women at its heart.

#IntelligenceSquared #IQ2 #IntelligenceSquaredPlusDan Jones on Henry V - Englands Greatest Warrior King - Part 1Intelligence Squared2024-09-27 | The full version of this video is only available to Members. Click the link below for more information and to join:
Henry V reigned over England for nine years and four months before he died at the early age of 35. He was known as a hardened, sometimes brutal, warrior, yet one who was also intelligent and artistic. He was a leader who made many mistakes, who misjudged his friends and family members, yet always seemed to triumph when it mattered. As king, he saved a shattered country from economic ruin, put down rebellions and secured England’s borders; in foreign diplomacy he made England a serious player on the world stage once more. Yet through his conquests in northern France, he sowed the seeds for three generations of calamity at home, in the form of the Wars of the Roses.
In September 2024 historian Dan Jones came to Intelligence Squared to tell the epic story of this controversial historical figure. Drawing from his new book Henry V: The Astonishing Rise of England’s Greatest Warrior King, Jones explained why Henry is such an important figure in English history and why his legacy still inspires cultural and political leaders today. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful naivety redirected as sober statesmanship. In the dark days of World War II, Henry’s victories in France were presented by British filmmakers as examples for a people existentially threatened by Nazism. Churchill called Henry ‘a gleam of splendor in the dark, troubled story of medieval England’, while for one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, ‘the greatest man who ever ruled England’.

In the 20th century most autocrats were brutal dictators whose main goal was to control a domestic population. But in the 21st century autocracy has become much more sophisticated and ambitious in its scope. States like Russia have developed sophisticated cross-border networks of kleptocratic financial structures, innovative security services and professional propagandists. The members of these networks are connected not only within a given country, but among many countries. The corrupt, state-controlled companies in one dictatorship aim to do business with corrupt, state-controlled companies in another. The police in one country can arm, equip, and train the police in another. Propagandists from one country can promote and finance extremists and propaganda in another — pounding home the same messages about the weakness of democracy and the evil of the West.
In September 2024 Anne Applebaum came to Intelligence Squared to provide a radical new framework for understanding autocracy in the 21st century. Applebaum argued that autocracies today are best viewed like an agglomeration of companies or what she calls Autocracy, Inc. Their relations are not based on values, but are rather transactional, which is why they operate so easily across ideological, geographical, and cultural lines. In truth, they are in full agreement about only one thing: The destruction of democratic challengers.
Applebaum was in conversation with BBC broadcaster Jonny Dymond to discuss how to understand and thwart this new evolved form of autocracy.

Professor Francis Fukuyama was joined in conversation by John Gray, the British political philosopher, who rejects the idea of universal liberal values and human progress. Despite the view held by many that the Russian invasion of Ukraine marks the end of the post-Cold War era, Fukuyama believes that it is a wake-up call for the West to rekindle the spirit of 1989, while Gray argues that the triumph of liberalism is far from inevitable.

As co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI, he is one of the pioneers of the artificial intelligence revolution, potentially the single greatest accelerant of progress in history. Investors in Inflection AI include the likes of Microsoft, Nvidia and Bill Gates. Suleyman says AI represents nothing less than a step change in human capability and human society, introducing both risks and innovations on an awesome scale. This is what is coming.
In September 2023 Suleyman came to the Intelligence Squared stage to discuss his new book The Coming Wave: Technology, Power and the Twenty-First Century’s Greatest Dilemma. In conversation with Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, he explained how he believes we are approaching a critical threshold in the history of humankind. Soon we will live surrounded by AIs which will carry out complex tasks – operating businesses, running government services and maintaining infrastructure. This will be a world of DNA printers and quantum computers, robot assistants and abundant energy, as well as human-engineered pathogens and autonomous weapons.
We are not prepared, Suleyman argued.
While these tools hold the promise of solving global problems and generating immense wealth, they also bring the risk of upheaval on a scale we can barely imagine. Suleyman explored how these forces threaten the very foundations of the nation state and the global order. And he argued that we face an existential dilemma: on the one side lie unprecedented harms arising from unchecked and unregulated AI, and on the other, the threat of overbearing surveillance from the state. Can our governments forge a narrow path between too much openness and too much control? Or are we sleepwalking into disaster?
Suleyman grappled with ‘the containment problem’ – the task of maintaining control over artificial intelligence and other powerful technologies – the ultimate challenge of our times.

On August 15 1947 Pakistan and India gained their independence and colonialism came to an end in the subcontinent. But it was not a time of celebration. A botched process of partition saw unprecedented sectarian violence, an estimated death of more than a million people and some 15 million more displaced from their homes.
Mishal Husain’s family lived through the mayhem. In June 2024 Husain, the acclaimed journalist and BBC Radio 4 Today Programme host, came to Intelligence Squared to tell her family’s story and shed light on this remarkable period of history. Drawing from her new book 'Broken Threads: My Family From Empire to Independence', she told stories like that of her grandmother Mary, a devout Catholic of Anglo-Indian parentage who leaves a struggling family to train as a nurse in Britain. Or her grandfather Shahid who finds purpose and success in the British Army as a Sandhurst cadet.
Husain confronted the acute sense of loss brought on by partition, the rupturing of cross-border relationships, and the scarring legacy of violence that still impacts the descendants of empire living in Britain today.

February 1942. RAF intelligence is baffled by a newly-identified radar network on the coast of Nazi-occupied Europe. Several radar installations are identified from aerial photographs but the purpose and the nature of the installations are not known. Some British scientists believe that these stations are connected with successful German downings of RAF bombers conducting raids in occupied Europe, resulting in severe losses of pilots and bombers. British scientists request that one of these installations be raided and the technology it possesses be studied and, if possible, extracted and brought back to Britain for further examination.
With the approval of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Chief of Operations Lord Mountbatten of Burma an extraordinary operation known as Operation Biting is launched with an ambitious goal: dismantle Hitler’s radar systems and help Britain win the war.
In May 2024 Max Hastings came to the Intelligence Squared stage to recount the remarkable story of Operation Biting and what it tells us about the crucial role of intelligence and special forces in great power conflict. Drawing from his new book Operation Biting: The 1942 Assault to Capture Hitler’s Radar he explored how this almost forgotten operation helped turn the tide of the war and how modern intelligence and special forces continue to shape the conflicts and wars we see in the world today.

There are few big thinkers better placed to explain global events than historian Niall Ferguson. He has not just a profound understanding of past crises, but also an exceptional ability to map out the longer term impact that present crises will have on world affairs.
In April 2024 Ferguson joined us on the Intelligence Squared stage to discuss the predicaments we are currently facing. How can the West deal with the geopolitical and ideological threats posed by what Ferguson calls the axis of ill will – Russia, China and Iran? With localised wars in Ukraine and Israel-Gaza and the threat of a crisis over Taiwan, are we sleepwalking towards a Third World War? And what are the likely consequences of the ongoing conflicts for the world economy?
Ferguson explored these pressing questions and shares his insights into the fast-changing global landscape.

#IntelligenceSquared #IQ2 #IntelligenceSquaredPlusThe Intelligence Squared Economic Outlook China Special, with Keyu JinIntelligence Squared2024-05-23 | China’s economic power has been growing for decades. The capitalist reforms of Deng Xiaoping quickly transformed China into the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with growth rates averaging 10% annually. But in recent years the so-called China miracle has begun to slow down. The Covid-19 pandemic and the default of property giant Evergrande (the world’s most indebted property developer) are among the factors that have economists and politicians around the world asking: Is China’s economy in big trouble?
As we enter 2024 President Xi Jinping faces some formidable challenges: slow growth, high youth unemployment and a domestic property market in turmoil.
In May 2024 renowned economist Keyu Jin came to Intelligence Squared to help us all make sense of the problems China faces. She explained how the success or failure of its economy will have profound consequences for the rest of the world.
Some argue that a more vulnerable China will seek better relations with the United States and the West. Others say economic weakness could make the country more aggressive and therefore more likely to invade Taiwan. Either way it has never been more important for us to understand the Chinese economy.

But, for renewable energy to be a sustainable part of our lives, we need to ensure it offers both economic growth and climate security. The International Labour Organisation estimates that the energy transition could create 25 million new jobs by 2030. To achieve that remarkable goal, we will need investment to ensure that jobs and workers are protected, and to rethink the way our business and employment models work. What are the different opportunities available in the green economy? Are there any specific skills required to work in the energy transition? What pathways are available for underrepresented groups? To answer all these questions and more, host Kamal Ahmed met three members of Iberdrola’s ‘Global Green Team’ for a conversation about the new employment pathways provided by the energy transition.

Bestselling author and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt has dedicated his career to speaking truth and wisdom in some of the most challenging spaces – communities polarised by politics and religion and university campuses mired in culture wars. Now he turns his attention to what he sees as a perfect storm of factors that are causing a collapse in mental health among teenagers today. According to the American College Health Association, since 2010 anxiety among American college students has increased by 134%, depression by 106%, bipolar disorder by 57%, and anorexia by 100%.
In April 2024 Haidt came to the Intelligence Squared stage where in conversation with BBC presenter Sarah Montague he drew on his new book The Anxious Generation, which has shot to No 1 in the Sunday Times bestsellers. He argued that the decline of free play in childhood and the rise of smartphone use among adolescents are the twin sources of increased mental distress among teenagers. He showed how, between 2010 and 2015, as teens traded in their flip phones for smartphones packed with social media apps, time online soared. This profound shift took place against a backdrop of diminishing childhood freedom, as parents over-supervised every aspect of their children’s lives offline, depriving them of the face-to-face experiences with their peers which they need to become strong and self-governing adults. In short, childhood got rewired.
Haidt argued that it isn’t too late to put the genie back in the bottle. Against the backdrop of the growing movement to ban smartphones in schools, he drew on traditional wisdom and cutting-edge research to offer practical advice to parents, teachers and teenagers,

What explains the popularity of the Karen meme, which references a stereotypically privileged white woman whom everyone feels entitled to loathe? Why does this age-old misogyny feel so very now?
As writer Victoria Smith approached middle age she made her peace with her sagging neckline and having to cope with ageing parents. But the disdain and vitriol she experienced as a woman in mid-life came as a shock. In her acclaimed book 'Hags: The Demonisation of Middle-Aged Women' she traces the prejudice that has been directed towards older women down the ages and explores the prevalence of witch hunts in recent years.
Smith was joined in conversation by The Sunday Times’s Hadley Freeman and author and columnist and author Sonia Sodha. Together they explored why women who have the temerity to exist beyond the age at which they are conventionally deemed desirable to men are seen as superfluous to society; and they will look for solutions which can benefit all women – whether they are hags or hags-in-waiting.

#IntelligenceSquared #IQ2 #IntelligenceSquaredPlusComedy in Dark Times, with Armando Iannucci and Helen LewisIntelligence Squared2024-03-28 | Armando Iannucci is one of Britain’s best-loved comedy writers. The creator of hit shows such as The Thick Of It, Veep and Alan Partridge, Iannucci is renowned for his sharp political satire and parodies of the rich and powerful. His latest project, a West End stage production of Stanley Kubrick’s Oscar-nominated black comedy Dr. Strangelove, focuses on a rogue US general who triggers a nuclear crisis.
In March 2024 Iannucci came to the Intelligence Squared stage where, in conversation with author and journalist Helen Lewis, he discussed the role of satire and comedy in dark times. Can comedy help us cope emotionally with world events such as war and conflict? Does satire still have the power to hold politicians to account? Should we really be laughing at our increasingly unstable and risky world?

#IntelligenceSquared #IQ2 #IntelligenceSquaredPlusTim Marshall on Ukraine, Gaza and how Geography Explains Our World | Intelligence SquaredIntelligence Squared2024-03-18 | Tim Marshall is one of the world’s most successful authors on foreign affairs. He’s the writer who put the ‘geo’ into geopolitics with his multi-million selling books Prisoners of Geography and The Power of Geography.
Marshall’s principal argument is that without geography we cannot understand the world. Geography explains why Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea: to remain a world power, Russia must have a navy and since Russian ports are frozen for half the year, Putin wanted to control the warm water port of Odessa.
Geography also explains why Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has remained in place: he may at one point have lost half the land space of Syria but he kept control of the cities where most of the population lives.
In February 2024 Marshall came to the Intelligence Squared stage where, in conversation with Ritula Shah, he discussed how geography can help us understand the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and other hotspots around the world. He also explained how his fascination with maps has led him to look upwards to space where, as he sets out in his new book The Future of Geography, planetary power play is likely to be the biggest geopolitical story of the coming century.

#IntelligenceSquared #IQ2 #IntelligenceSquaredPlusDebate: Save Our Private Schools! | Intelligence SquaredIntelligence Squared2024-03-11 | Britain has an education system that perpetuates inequality. Seven per cent of its children go to private schools and yet these institutions receive around three times the funding per student as the average state school. Privately educated people then go on to dominate our elite institutions. They are seven times as likely to win a place at Oxford and Cambridge universities as their state-educated peers, and they make up 65 per cent of senior judges and 29 per cent of members of parliament. Private schools foster a cycle of privilege with the result that Britain has one of the lowest rates of social mobility in the developed world. So Labour leader Keir Starmer’s proposal to impose VAT on private school fees must surely be welcomed. The estimated £1.3 billion a year the tax would raise would be used to fund more teachers and provide mental health counselling in the state sector. Doubtless some parents would no longer be able to afford the higher fees but there is capacity within the state system to accommodate the fall-out. Who could possibly object to a tax that would benefit the majority of Britain’s schoolchildren?
Those who believe in aspiration, that’s who, argue the champions of private schools. People like Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s parents, who, as he has explained, were not wealthy or privileged but who worked hard so that they could send their son to one of this country’s top independent schools. Removing the tax breaks on private schools would amount to class war and punish parents who are prepared to make sacrifices to give their children the best start in life. Because, let’s be honest, it won’t be the one per cent who will be affected by this change, but the children of the ‘squeezed middle’ and the less well off who rely on bursaries and scholarships to access private education – many of whom these schools may no longer be able to support under Labour’s proposals.
Should private schools continue to enjoy their tax advantages or not?

#wealth #history #civilisation #yuvalnoahharari #intelligencesquared #intelligencesquaredplus #iq2Head of TED Chris Anderson and Jon Ronson on Hope, Shame and Infectious GenerosityIntelligence Squared2024-02-24 | As head of TED, Chris Anderson has had a ringside view of the world’s most influential thinkers in action. TED’s annual conference in Vancouver sees thousands of delegates flock from across the world to hear presentations from pre-eminent scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, political leaders and CEOs on the biggest issues of the day. Speakers have included Elon Musk on artificial intelligence, Bill Gates on how to prevent future pandemics and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on how to create a better future for women and girls.
The first TED talk posted online was in 2006, during a relatively optimistic period in recent history. But in recent years Anderson has seen the tone of the talks delivered at TED shift as experts warn of the unprecedented dangers and risks posed by artificial intelligence, climate change and other tectonic shifts in our world.
On Tuesday February 20, Anderson comes to Intelligence Squared in conversation with author and filmmaker Jon Ronson to argue that we can turn fear back into optimism. Drawing from his new book Infectious Generosity he will argue that there is so much to be positive about in our world and that good things happen when we start to practice the most fundamental of human virtues: generosity. Anderson will combine cutting-edge research with human stories such as how a London barber began offering haircuts to homeless people and in the process catalysed a movement across the world to show us that whether we’re giving our money, time, skills, connections or considerateness we can all use generosity to change the world and feel good about the future, and ourselves.
