Last year I took a deep dive into the world of gaming terrain purveyor Dwarven Forge when I reviewed the expansive and beautiful Dreadhollow Forest set, so when they contacted me to ask if I’d be willing to take a look at a couple of new sets slated for release on their webstore I immediately said ‘send them over!’ As I mentioned in my previous review I’m a big fan of Dwarven Forge, a relatively small company with relatively massive kickstarter campaigns under their belt. They’ve been designing and manufacturing the world’s best tabletop RPG and wargaming terrain for decades and the sets I’m reviewing in this episode certainly fit the bill. This brand of sculpted and painted terrain allows gamers to be fully immersed in a world of endless possibilities limited only by your collection of tiles and/or the size of the bank account used to buy them.

The Room 17 deck’s main distinction from the original House of the Rising Spade release is two fold; the newly designed tuckcase and gold gilded edges. More on the gilding a bit later. First let’s focus on the tuck case. The gorgeous tuck, printed by Lotrek’s Oath Playing Cards, uses high quality matte red cardstock and features deep embossing and red and gold foil printing. The front of the box features a gold foil spade rife with scrollwork embellishments and a center die-cut keyhole. The entirety of the remaining tuck box real estate is covered in embossed runic symbols that are a promise to a deeper mystery hidden within the deck.

Paper Kings Playing Cards Deck Review Spotlight

TheGentlemanWake 2019-11-22 | Produced by TCC playing cards as part of a mid-2019 Kickstarter campaign, the Paper Kings playing cards come packaged in a standard glossy card-stock tuck case printed with large color block shapes in yellow-orange, blood-orange, purple and sky blue, and the deck’s title on the front. One side of the box reads Designed by Creative Mints and the designer’s website the other reads United States Playing Card Company which is the manufacturer. The bottom includes some additional ad copy. The top has no writing and the deck has no seal. The back of the box includes more of the color blocked shapes as seen on the front.

Latin Quarter Playing Cards Deck Review Spotlight

TheGentlemanWake 2019-11-13 | In this episode we're sponsored by Doc's Playing Cards and take a look at the Latin Quarter deck. These playing cards represent a foray into casino style decks from Doc’s Playing Cards, who had previously concentrated on decks better suited to cardistry. The Latin Quarter deck comes packaged in a gorgeous and intricate tuck box printed predominantly in gold foil ink with red foil details on a premium matte black soft touch cardstock. The front of the box features the Latin Quarter branding, a concave banner resting over a nice LQ monogram. The monogram sits within a golden spoked wheel and the design is topped with a crown. The words Casino and Lounge at either side. At the bottom there’s text that reads Lexington KY, a reference to the underground casino in Lexington.

The entire design is embedded within a tangle of gold foil scroll work, surrounded by a gold foil frame. At the bottom is a small circle with a gold fleur de lis, a homage perhaps to the deck title’s french beginnings.

Playing Cards Fit For The Devil: 666 Playing Cards

TheGentlemanWake 2019-10-31 | In this episode we take a look at a devilishly detailed deck of cards, plus we announce the winners of the Ekaterina Fox Playing Cards giveaway.

The 666 deck by Riffle Shuffle Playing Cards is a Kickstarter campaign organized by Kevin Yu will see the deck available in two variants, one crimson red and one cobalt blue, the decks come packaged in gorgeous foil embossed tuck cases with mysterious black foil ink on premium black matte card stock. On the front of the tuck, underneath the prominent triple sixes, in a shower of fire and flames, is a banner with the words playing cards. Two pitchforks crossed at the handle flank a circle with the upside-down five pointed star or pentagram drawn within. Underneath is a small placard with year of the deck’s printing, 2019, in Roman numerals. Each corner features more occult symbology including a crescent moon, the sigil of Lucifer, and the Leviathan’s cross otherwise known as Satan’s cross.

The Poker Deck of the Drowning World Review 4K

TheGentlemanWake 2019-10-28 | In this episode we are reviewing a deck that reminds me of of the film Midsommar from director Ari Aster in more than one way. As you’ll see they share a green pastural setting and nature oriented paganistic overtones that permeate the artwork in much the same way the film dors but also because it promises and sheds light on a horror that is all to clear and present. I promise you, much like Midsommar, this deck is unlike what you’ve come to expect. The official title of the deck I’m reviewing here is the Fledermaus Workshop presents the Poker deck of the drowning world, a panoramic parable told in 52 scenes. The deck comes packaged in a beautifully illustrated tuck case. The front iterates the deck name in a poster-card style layout. Behind the floating placard bearing the title. the image shown is a verdant and winding stretch of green grass lands punctuated with still blue lakes. In the clear skies above a row of distant clouds a flock of white birds swirls. This is a deck that wears it’s artwork on its sleeve, figuratively and literally, as the sides, top and bottom eschew traditional text and copy in favor of small sequential images of the 52 scene parable promised by the deck’s title.

The back of the box is an image of one of the decks kings, the king of birds (we’ll get into that distinction a little later). The king towers over the same landscape as on the front, except the birds swirl around him, perching within him on the sills of windows and trapdoors built into the tall straw-man structure. There’s a totemic quality to the figure that we’ll see echoed on all the kings.

National Playing Card Collection Day 2019 - Commemorative Set Deck Review and Giveaway

TheGentlemanWake 2019-10-18 | In this episode I show you one of the most elaborate and beautiful deck series I’ve featured to date, a commemoration of the National Playing Card Collection Day. This is the 4th National Playing Cards Collection Day deck set furnished by Seasons Playing Cards and Alex Chin. Last years entry, the 2018 edition made it to my top ten decks list of 2018 due to its uniquely brilliant design and beauty. And if there’s one thing Alex can be counted on is an elaborate collection of editions and options for his deck sets and this entry is no different.

The NPCDD 2019 decks come available in six different varieties. Just about all of them include some unique elements that make them all worth exploring, if not owning. The decks all come in different permutations of the same gorgeous two-piece tuck box. The boxes feature raised intaglio inking on both the outside slip case and the inner box as we’ll soon see. The paper stock is a luxurious pearlescent premium cardstock that sets off the fine details of the inkwork.

Not Your Dads Bicycle Deck! Black Magic Deck Review

TheGentlemanWake 2019-10-14 | In this episode we look at a bicycle branded deck that is anything but standard the Bicycle Black Magic Playing Cards from Shapeshifters, Max Playing Cards and Gamblers Warehouse. Plus we give you a chance to win one for yourself.
Launched as a kickstarter campaign in the first quarter of 2019, the deck is a collaboration between shapeshifters and max playing cards for gambler’s warehouse. There are two versions of the deck, a bicycle branded standard edition and foil embossed deluxe variant.

The standard deck comes packaged in the typical uspcc style tuckcase. White glossy card stock printed to be predominantly black, or near black seeing as how the cardstock has a tendency to reduce the contract of dark designs. The front of the box includes the bicycle branding in the traditional serifed font. The year 2018, presumably the year of design, in roman numerals underneath. All of this sits above an intricate spade pip constructed of linework with a decidedly celtic feel. This is a theme that we’ll see represented throughout the deck.

The sides of the deck read Black Magic on one side and Made in the USA on the other. The top of the box includes a circular black magic logo and the bottom includes the traditional ad copy including logos for shapeshifters (presumably the designers) and playingcards.net (the online playing cards storefront for Gamblers Warehouse). The max playing cards logo is on the left side of the box near the bottom.
