Test System Water for pH & Molybdate with Test Kit #2500691 | Central Boiler Outdoor Wood Furnace Central Boiler 2022-11-17 | centralboiler.com/supportThe water test strips that come with the outdoor wood furnace test both the pH and Molybdate level of the water.To obtain a system water sample, open the valve on the sight gauge and bend it to drain about a quart of water from the tube. Use caution as the water in the sight gauge may be hot. Carefully collect a sample of the system water and close the valve when finished.Dip a test strip in the water sample for 1 second and shake off excess liquid. The decal on the test strip bottle identifies the pH and Molybdate test pads.Compare the moly test pad to the color chart on the bottle within 10 seconds. The moly level must be 350 ppm or more. At about 30 seconds, compare pH test pad to the color chart. The pH of the treated water should be between 8.0 and 9.5.See the Owner’s Manual or the Online Support Center for more information.

Last year we switched to the Classic Edge 550 from a conventional style boiler. The conventional stove had quite a bit more wood consumption compared to this first year with Classic Edge. We noticed about a 50% reduction in wood that we burned through the winter.We’re heating roughly 3,000 square feet including domestic hot water. We are able to set up the system so that we can dial in all the temperatures in our home not only from the room temperature standpoint but also how we heat our floors. The whole system has been remarkable. It is a luxury and it’s one that we’ve really enjoyed. This place was originally set up with propane and we had an abundance of a resource and that’s why we bought a Central Boiler.The outdoor wood burner has all the conveniences of propane. We don’t notice a difference in our day-to-day function I’d say.We had a baby coming along and just really needed to make a change to something that was less expensive because we were spending at least $2,500 on propane a year so we just wanted to make a change to something that we could manage more successfully and use the resources at our home already.Yeah I did, I shopped around with other brands and compared. I chose the Edge because of the new design they had on them appealed to me. The ease of cleaning and access and serviceability, and the back heat exchanger plate is just a breeze to get to with the back door design on these new Classic Edges.We do open up the back as well through the hinged door. And of course do a thorough cleaning of the heat exchanger and just make sure that everything back there is running properly. But that’s only a once a month activity and it’s only a 10-minute activity in total. I love heating the water with the Central Boiler because we have unlimited hot water all winter long. It was fantastic.We have 4 kids and it takes a lot of hot water to keep the house running between the dishwasher and the laundry and baths.This model of the Classic Edge also came with the FireStar Controller with E-Link Technology that you can hook up to your Wi-Fi. Basically anywhere you get a phone signal you have an opportunity to look at your fire. The simple fact that I can check on my phone through the application and see what the furnace is doing has proven incredibly useful.When I’ve had to put wood in, then my husband will call me and tell me when to put it in. To understand how important the FireStar is, take a look at this camp fire.The smoke escaping is actually unburned fuel that is being wasted. In the Classic Edge we harness this smoke and gas and utilize them for fuel.Here’s a Classic Edge that we cut in half. Now the wood burns in the upper firebox on top of the coal bed and the smoke and the gasses are pushed down through the fusion combustor into the lower Reaction Chamber. The tricky part is to get these unburned gasses to ignite before they escape out the chimney. The reason they won’t ignite is because there is not enough oxygen present. Fire is a simply a chemical reaction and can be easily understood through the fire triangle. When you have the proper amount of fuel, heat, and oxygen, that’s when fire happens.The oxygen was depleted during primary combustion in the upper firebox so there’s no oxygen remaining to ignite the smoke and the gas in the lower reaction chamber. Now, the FireStar combustion controller knows this and adds more air, more oxygen through the air charge tube, into the lower reaction chamber, effectively balancing the fire triangle and causing the unburned smoke and the unburned gas to ignite.To learn more, let’s talk to the experts in our Research and Development test laboratory. Alex, how does the combustion controller know when to add more air?Well Mark it’s constantly sensing the temperature in the Reaction Chamber and adding just enough air to complete the fire triangle. Now you’ll notice, out of the chimney here, we’ve got absolutely no smoke coming out of there. One would think, this thing isn’t even running. However, come over here, crack the door open, see that smoke coming out, and that smoke is actually wasted fuel. It’s combustible.So now, as it’s getting hot enough in the Reaction Chamber, what’s happening is the amount of air is gradually increased based on the temperature to achieve a very nice, hot, beautiful flame.That’s amazing.The combustion controller also features E-Link Technology which allows you to connect your furnace to the internet. Unfortunately, firebox volume is not something everybody compares when looking at outdoor furnaces. Typically companies manufacture a ‘small, medium, and large," but without actual specifications and measurements, what does that mean? It’s really quite simple… Small, Medium, and Large are not created equal. When you compare actual firebox volume measurements, such as our large versus their large… typically what you’ll find is, when you do true measurements, you’ll see that their large actually is the size of our medium. Look past the small, medium, and large labels and compare the actual firebox volume. You’ll find the Central Boiler is the best value.So… what’s the big deal with firebox volume? A firebox is basically the fuel tank for your furnace. Take this car for example. Suppose this car has a very small fuel tank. Even if it has good gas mileage and great horsepower, a properly sized fuel tank is just as important. Who cares if you’re getting good gas mileage if you’re constantly refilling your tank. It’s the same with furnace firebox volume. A smaller firebox will need to be filled more often. When people don’t consider actual firebox volume measurements, they can end up with the wrong size furnace. Here is an example of two homes with identical heat loads. They are heated by wood furnaces with similar BTU output and efficiency ratings so both furnaces take the same amount of wood in a 12 period. This home is heated with a furnace that has a smaller firebox. Even though it heats the home, the small firebox needs to be filled more often. This home uses a properly sized Classic Edge. He can easily load enough wood for a 12 hour period or even longer if necessary. In general, it’s best for the furnace if the operator sticks to a 12 hour burn time, but occasionally if you want to go away for the weekend; it’s nice to know you have a furnace that will accommodate.There’s nothing worse than the dreaded middle-of-the-night fill up. Having a Classic Edge gives peace of mind that even if the temperature drops, you’ll still have enough wood for a long burn time. Don’t be misled by labels. Urethane Foam Insulation Demonstration │Central Boiler Central Boiler 2015-11-23 | centralboiler.comFor over 30 years a hallmark of Central Boiler has been spray-on urethane foam insulation. It’s waterproof, airtight, keeps the heat in the water jacket and delivers more heat to your house, even in the most extreme environment like up here in northern Minnesota.This kind of insulation is high tech and takes specialized equipment with specialized applicators, training, not to mention talent. The foam components are stored in a special temperature controlled environment. Urethane foam is comprised of 2 components held in these massive semi-tanker-sized vessels. Component A, Component B.During the application process when the 2 chemicals are mixed, it results in an exothermic reaction which causes the blowing agent to boil. This results in the foam’s expansion.Over the years urethane foam insulation has been used in a lot of products; water heaters, refrigerators, motorhomes, it was even used by NASA on the Saturn 5 rocket, which got us to the moon. Here is a water jacket after it’s been insulated. This closed-cell space-age material is not only water proof and air tight, but it also molds to the contours of the furnace, allowing for an even more compact unit. Insulation needs to do 2 things. It not only needs to insulate, it also needs to seal. With urethane foam insulation it seals very well. No gaps, no air flow, nowhere for the heat to bleed off.Now we’ve been expounding on the virtues of urethane foam insulation and you’re probably wondering… if it’s so great, why would anyone use anything else?A common alternative is fiberglass bat insulation. There’s a number of issues with fiberglass batt insulation. There’s an old saying in the outdoor furnace industry, batts and gaps.Gaps are not good. Over time, fiberglass batt insulation settles exposing areas to the water jacket where you have extreme heat loss. This is very inefficient.Moisture is a major issue with fiberglass insulation. Let me demonstrate.Imagine a driving rain, pushing underneath the rafters of the furnace, soaking the fiberglass batt insulation. Is this going to dry out? No, it’s going to trap the moisture. It’s actually going to cause additional settling and over time it’s going to trap the moisture against the water jacket causing corrosion.Versus our top of the line spray-on urethane foam insulation. Look at this, it’s water proof, in fact, it even floats. It’s the best stuff out there. Water proof, air tight.So the question is why would anybody use anything other than urethane foam insulation? Well, because it’s cheap.For over 30 years Central Boiler has invested the time, equipment, training and resources to use this type of insulation and it’s been well worth it. Nothing else matches it, nothing even comes close.In fact, if it wasn’t for the significant investment involved with urethane foam insulation, everybody would use it.Make sure you insist on a Central Boiler outdoor furnace with urethane foam insulation.
