The Upside of DownsizingAs we near the completion of the first coat of earthen plaster on our #offgrid #strawbalehouse, other projects can not be put off any longer. With the 2021 #Monsoon season upon us, me must get this last piece of the flood protection puzzle completed.
I asked our friend Derek "#Handeeman" Howlett to help us grade out 24 tons of AB Mix for our driveway apron. The plan is to raise the level of the driveway above the road to help prevent water from entering our property during heavy rains. I had planned on raising the level about 6-8 inches, but the 24 tons of material allowed us to raise it almost a full 12 inches above the level of the road! That means waters less than 12 inches deep will stay on the road and not run down our driveway.

The most commonly spoken phrase around this place is how did we get by without a tractor this long?
In this video you'll see us use the tractor to work in the washes creating berms that will effectively shut off two arteries of the wash that was responsible for the flood we experienced on September 9th 2020.
We also purchase a load of railroad ties to be used as the foundation basis for our tractor tent from shelterlogic. moving railroad ties is a lot easier with the tractor than it was moving them by hand.
And finally, thanks to some creative comments by David Edward Tolson in our previous video, I went on the search for the materials needed to create a homemade drag Harrow. It turned out really great and to be super effective for both our property as well as road maintenance in general.

I'm not one to talk too much about my personal life, but I did want to mention the passing of my mom. She was a huge supporter of our #Homesteadproject and was always ready to offer her design ideas either over the phone, or by sending us a thick envelope, filled with pictures and articles from magazines. Though she didn't live to see our home completed, a few of those suggestions she offered will most certainly be used and by doing so, we can keep a piece of her with us just a little longer.

My operation went well and I am on the mend. My physical capabilities have been reduced to "Don't Do It" according to Yvonne, who is doing an AMAZING JOB at picking up my slack. I'll probably be cleared for light physical labor I another week.

This is it! We are finally starting the earthen plaster of our #strawbalehouse. But first a few minor details must be attended to. Installation of outdoor recepticals and boxes for sconces as well as making sure we have adequate supplies available so that once we begin, we can work through until completion of an entire wall/side of the building. That means straw clay and native soil needs to be prepped. I also take a trip to Tucson to acquire some #Natural Hydraulic Lime plaster. We're going to experiment with it and see if we will use it in lieu of Portland cement.

There are times when things just don't go as planned. When things change with little our no notice ahead of time. In those cases, we have found it best to embrace change and accept it as a part of life.
No matter how big or small, changes can mean new opportunities to discover things that would have otherwise never been seen.
So when Yvonne said she wanted to modify the floorplan, I accepted the challenge. And like so many times, the change turned out to be for the better.

In this short video we show the problems we had with the compression of the bales. Those walls that are "load bearing" sustained more compression than the non-load bearing walls. This caused us to replace some of the trim pieces located on the outside of the building.

Today we begin work installing our metal roof. With our metal sheets being 29 feet long, we definitely had a challenge ahead of us figuring out how to get the 15 panels on the roof. Luckily I had helped our neighbor #Handeemann with his metal roof and paid attention to the set up we used to get his panels up on his roof. Thanks Derek for the great idea.
