Jon LangsethBased on the CoreXY concept and ideas from FABtotum to avoid crossing belts, I'm experimenting to see if I can get away with as few mounting-points for belts/pulleys as possible. This video shows that my prototype moves, as well as showing the CoreXY movements. Moving resistance feels very low, even if this is very simply built (no linear rollers/brass bearings, no attention made to precicion...). Next step: moving the parts using the motors :)

I'm almost done putting together the new frame for my printer, but stopped to upload a short video, as seen above. I'm amazed at how much flex I've lived with on the old frame, and already really believe that I'll be getting better results with the new frame. Before, I could flex the frame on the corners by a few centimeters(!), the we one simply does not move. This gun' be gud'!OpenCoreBot CoreXY printer runningJon Langseth2015-12-05 | http://defcon.no/mech/opencorebot-update-2-im-changing-the-build/Ill stop using Gemfan propellers ....Jon Langseth2015-07-05 | These are Gemfan 6030 props, so far I've had more GF props fail mid-air than snapping due to crashing into stuff... Mine is still a little underpowered, and I am very much a n00b at flying it XDCoreXY experimentation update #2: conventional revised belt pathJon Langseth2014-10-10 | After reviewing the naive errors in my thinking (see link below), I've concluded that my idea for simplifying the belt path will not work. So, a revised prototype has been built, now using 3D-printed belt idlers on the loops, and only straight & symmetric lines on the essential parts of the belt path.
So, I'm no longer chasing the not-crossing belt path that FAtotum uses, instead going with a conventional, two-level CoreXY. There is now a crossing path on the belts, but the belts run on two separate levels, so there is no parts where the belt is forced to move in ways it's not designed to do.
Post about my flaws: http://defcon.no/mech/flaws-in-my-simplified-corexy-idea/
I hope you can notice the increased speed of moves after these modifications :)CoreXY experimentation update: pen plotting with motor movesJon Langseth2014-09-30 | The prototype for my CoreXY experiment now moves by motor control. Using Marlin software on an Arduino Mega with RAMPS1.4 to drive the motors, I go through several speeds from 800mm/min to 24000mm/min, (that's 400mm/sec) moves. I have made no care to precision in the belt, and adding that to unevenly tightened belts, flex in components, and finally a pen that's not really fastened well, there is noticeable flaws in the resulting drawing. However, this also means the prototype highlights what areas of a final build will need extra attention. This first prototype is based on the CoreXY concept and ideas from FABtotum to avoid crossing belts
The AC version I am using is quite old, so it is not representative of current AC Loiter state. I have also done minimal tuning of nav/loiter when doing the test.
The frame I am using is a HobbyKing Q450 (really a Whirlwind FY450), equipped with generic 20A ESC's and NTM 28-30S 900 motors spinning unbalanced 1045SF plastic props, so the PX4 is seeing quite a lot of vibration. The survey procedure: icmp ping for latency test, real-time video stream for quality and throughput, a reloading web-page for "simple connectivity", IRC for communication between the surveyor and the Network Operation Centre. This screen setup is streamed out using twitch.tv and Open Broadcaster Software so the NOC has a real-time view of hte network quality.
The challenge: provide 1000+ wireless clients low latency and high throughput in a very complex environment: a semi-dome shaped building with a metal roof, 5000 people with all sorts of computers and wireless equipment generating noise and interresting issues.
The Wireless network is a 802.11a/n deployment of Cisco CAPWAP-enabled 1142, 2602, 3502 and 3602 access points, managed by the Cisco Wireless Controller 5508 and Cisco Prime Infrastructure. Phew!Testing current limit, BL-Ctrl w/Turnigy TR28-26B brushless motorJon Langseth2011-05-22 | I have been having problems "hitting the ceiling" on my motor capacity with the Protokopters, so I decided to do an off-copter test. In this test, the BL-Ctrl is run on PWM, rather than the normal I2C.
The rig is not as fancy as it may look ^_^ Control is provided by an Arduino running a slightly modified version of the "Knob" PWM demo. The "dial-indicator" is a standard RC servo connected to the same PWM signal as the BL-Ctrl. A 0-255 representation of the PWM value is sent via serial, to a simple perl-script that displays the value in a "font-bumped" terminal.
I also discovered in a test that I did not film, that when the current-limit has been in effect for a while, thermal protection causes the FETs to shut down, cutting power completely! This will explain part of a "dropping out of the sky" problem that I have been experiencing.Testing Arduino TVOut libJon Langseth2011-05-15 | Testing the TVOut library for the Arduino on a breadboard-mounted ATMega328p. Powered by a KNSU propellant grain. The grain was over-cooked, then wetted down and cast. This resulted in a really bad propellant grain, as evident from the stuttering.
The rear end seal was made from tightly packed alu-foil, but gaps in this led to burn-through and significant rear-end leaks.
The nozzle performs well, giving a nice thrust plume for one second when the propellant burned correctly, so the static test is not a failure, but proves potential for ALTM1.KNSUFR+FeO Static BurnJon Langseth2009-09-06 | 65/25/10 KNO3 / Sucrose / Fructose with a dash of Iron Oxide. The grain size is roughly 170 grams.
Casing made from PP plastic (37mm inner diameter), plug and nozzle made from Bentonite. The nozzle was not cured, and as a result the burn gave a one-second nozzled burn before the entire nozzle was blown out of the casing. The nozzled burn is at 00:09+ to 00:10+.
