People are usually using zip lock bags to store nuts and bolts from a restoration project. These can be very annoying if you have a lot of different bags. Using organizer boxes are a much better solution.

My goal was to build it as simple as possible to not use much material and also make it easy to store when it's not in use. I decided to make two separate dollies and don't have a conection in between them. It worked out very well, especially in the front. It could've been a little bit more rigid in the back, but it works out for my needs. Additionally you could still add a screwable connection piece bewtween the two dollies. When I used this dolly for the transport of the chassis, I strapped it down to the trailer in the front and also in the rear. Then you also need to connect both dollies with a reatchet strap, otherwise you'd pull the dollies appart.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsWorn Out Sloppy Hood Hinges Restoration - Datsun 240Zmy mechanics insights2023-12-01 | In this video I'm restoring the hood hinges of my 1973 Datsun 240Z. When I did the panel alignement on the hood of the car, I had to realize that both hinges were worn out. The had enormous play when the hood was closed. The movement in the hinges was around 2cm (3/4 inch) up and down. Installing the torsion bars did eliminate the loose play, but they just pushed all the play upwards, means I could still push the hood down the 2cm. This was especially an issue, because I could not even lower the hood enough to align it with the head light buckets and fenders. The hood was just sitting too high. There was only one solution, to restore the hinges. After disassembly, I first sandblasted all the parts. Then I straigthend all the segments, drilled all holes 1mm bigger and reamed them for a nice and accurate hole. I've also filed all the contours clean to remove the nasty fabrication marks from the punching. After that I chamfered everything and removed all the sharp edges. Then it was time to make 14 new little shafts for the joints. I was sure to measure all the thickness of the parts and diameters to make the new parts fit as tight as possible, yet still having enough play to move. For proper rust protection and also keep the originality to the parts I gave them all for yellow zinc plating to a local company. For the reassembly I didn't apply any grease, because I also plan to paint the hinges in car color like it was originally. Having grease in the joints could mess the paint job up. I'll be sure to lubricate them all after painting. To deform the ends of the little shafts I quickly made a little tool for the hydraulic press. It worked like a charm on the 6t press. The ends of the shafts got now a nice chamfer after pressing and the head got 1mm bigger in diameter. I've also made some test pieces before and cut them in half after pressing and the result was very nice. A very tight and strong hold, a nice rivet connection.
I hope you like my work and enjoy the video.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsFixing the Wobbling Tailgate on my Datsun 240Zmy mechanics insights2023-11-17 | In this video I'm showing how I fixed the oil can effect on the tailgate on my datsun 240Z. Everytime you push the lock to open the tailgate the sheet will get pushed in as well. At first I thought something was broken off or defect, but turns out it was most likely like that from the factory. The sheet is just very flat there and not solid enough to withstand the force from pushing the lock. The flat support piece on the backside doesn't really help either. I removed the support piece first, then removed all the rust down to bare metal. I applied some weld through primer for rust protection. I made a new support piece out of 1mm steel. To give it extra strength I've bent the edges up and also made the piece longer to support the whole length. To avoid any warping of the outer shell, I only welded it to the backside. This solution worked very well and the tailgate is now rock solid around the lock.
I hope you like my work and enjoy the video.

First I made the shape of the cutout easier by rounding the ends. Then I removed all the paint around the opening for clean welding. I preshaped a piece of sheet metal of the same thickness as the fender to match the curved shape of it. Once I had it I cut it to shape to fit inside the opening. I held the patch in place with the help of a few magnets. Then I slowely startet to weld it in, always made sure it sits fush before welding one spot. To keep the heat to a minimum I always cooled the weld with compressed air. I also followed a cross pattern to weld it in to reduce the heat and warping. Then I snaded the welds down and stretched it with hammer and dolly. To reshape the warped fender with hammer and dolly I sanded the welds down completely flush on both sides. After a rough shaping it was time to apply a guide coat with black matte paint. Then I sanded it with a flexible file that had a 240 grit emery cloth taped to it. I hammered and sanded back and forth until the shape of the fender was absolutely perfect.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsKnurling from two Sides - The Perfect Knurlingmy mechanics insights2022-10-05 | In this video I'm making a big shaft with a knurled section in the middle. This footage is from a failed restoration video recorded in July 2021. I cancelled this restoration of an old and very rusty 25kg dumbell that was sent to me by a subscriber from Germany. I thought I could still share the footage of the making of this shaft, because it was very special to knurl from both sides with an overlap. I've never done or seen this before anywhere. One very critical point for a successful result is definitely the runout. The part has to run 100% true on both knurlings. Therefore the only way to achieve this was to turn the part between centers. As I don't have any lathe dogs in the shop I decided to fix the part with a dead center with a threaded shaft. Like that the part was running true and was also secured. The knurling went very well and was looking really perfect, also the overlap was almost not visible anymore.
I hope you like my work and the video.

It had previosly installed a regular thrustbearing which unfortunately was too thick. Therefore the car had issues getting the gears in. We're now switching to a new graphite bearing, which are very common in oldtimers. All dimensions are identical except for the lower thickness and the bigger two shafts. I need to turn them down to ø10mm to make them fit into the clutch. This is a detailed explained video going through all needed steps to get an accurate result.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsMaking a Big Concave Radius on the Lathemy mechanics insights2022-07-26 | In this video you vcan see how I made the big concave anvil I used on the desk lamp restoration video on the main channel. I needed this piece to reshape the completely dented reflector. I made it out of plastic, so it won't make any damage or scratches to the aluminium of the reflector. I used a wood working tool with a carbide insert and clamped it in a jig that was pivoting around the toolpost shaft. With this technique I was able to make a perfectly spherical radius on the face of the part. Regarding the jig, the tip of the tool needs to be in the center of the spindle and for making a spherical radius the center of the toolpost shaft has to line up with the center of the spindle.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsBuilding the Perfect Cart for my new Kilnmy mechanics insights2022-05-28 | In this video you can see how I built this kiln cart from scratch. As the name says, it is built for my new Rohde kiln. I have also built in a drawer with a bucket that contains the oil for quenching. The size of the bucket on the inside is 22cm x 27cm and it's 45cm deep, the oil level will be at 41cm height. So it is 2cm bigger on all sides than the kiln opening itself which is 20cm x 25cm and 35cm deep (39cm diagonal). The kiln is made by Rohde from Germany and the model is ME20/13 (see link below). It has a digital control unit and max temperatur of 1300°C. It's 91kg heavy by the way. Just 1cm above the oil level I installed a perforated sheet as a spill protection guard. By moving the cart around or just moving the drawer the oil will make waves and could spill over and make a mess. The perforated sheet does slow down the waves a lot and makes spilling over less likely. If it still does spill over I could also add a second perforated sheet with a distance of 1cm right above the current one. To protect the oil from dirt and dust I have also made a lid to cover up the opening. I placed the drawer on the left side of the cart to have additional space on the right side to build a little shelf for the heat treatment equipment. I have an electrical heating unit to preheat the quenching oil, an infrared thermometer to check the oil temperature, heat resistant gloves, stainless steel foil to wrap the parts to avoid scale to build up, a pair of old scissors to cut the stainless steel foil and also a pair of blacksmith tongs to hold the parts. I brought all the parts to a local company for powder coating to have maximum protection, especially for the bucket with the oil. Regular 2K paint could not withstand the high temperatures of the oil very well. I built the shelf from wood and roller painted it with a PU acrylic paint. The shelf and the drawer are painted in light grey (RAL 7035), the frame and the door latch are painted in sky blue (RAL 5015). I picked these two colors because they are the same like the kiln, the Rohde logo is in sky blue by the way.
I hope you like my work and the video.

I've built this little box from european walnut. To mount it on the door bell I've made two mirrored hook latches. To give it all a matching look with the door bell itself I have applied linseed oil on the wood and nickel plated the steel parts. I have used two wood screws to fix the latches, which I quickly sanded clean and also nickel plated. Be sure to also check out the restoration video of the door bell itself if you haven't already.

On the book press I have used them to let the half round rivet head sit securly in the dimple of the rivet header, so I could peen the other end of the rivet. I used 34CrNiMo6 for this tool. I hardened it and tempered it to give the tool more durability.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsMaking a Custom Gearmy mechanics insights2022-01-18 | In this video I'm going to make a custom gear for my lathe. This special gear is needed to have additional feed rates to turn threads on the lathe, especially 26tpi. My lathe can cut a ton of different pitches, but not 26tpi. To cut a thread with 26tpi you'd need so called „special accessories“, which is just a special gear with 46 teeth and 52 teeth to replace the standard gear with 21 teeth and 28 teeth. So I decided to make my own. As I don't have any gear cutting milling tools I decided to make the special gear with two welded together normed stock gears. I was able to order them online for $25 each. After welding them together I made the bore to the proper size, turned three grooves and cut a keyway on the arbor press with a 5mm keyway broach. It all worked out as planed.
I hope you like my work and the video.

The 36 years old original ones made from plastic became very brittle and fragile over the years and they break quite often. So I was asked to make some new ones out of stainless steel. We've decided to make the same design like the original ones, just have them polished instead of black. I also need to make four new rings. They had such clip things originally. As this technique does not work with metal rings, I've decided to use C-clips instead to secure them in place which worked perfectly.

Making Hubcaps for Wheels - DIYmy mechanics insights2021-10-02 | In this video I'm going to make some aluminium hubcaps for scooter wheels with the help of metal spinning. I've used this technique just once before on the kitchen scale restoration. Back then it worked, but the surface finishes were very rough and I had to do a lot of sanding. Therefore I decided to dive in deeper and find out were the issues are coming from and improve my setup and technique.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsThis Bolt is Broken... I Make a New One! Machining Left-Hand Threadmy mechanics insights2021-07-20 | In this video I'm making a custom bolt with a thread on each end. One of the thread is a regular M16 thread and the other one is a left-hand M16 thread. In the center there's a 24mm hexagon. This part is used to adjust the distance between two parts which are used for a foot pedal on a machine. As both threads are pretty big to cut with dies I decided to turn them on the lathe. I was lucky that I was able to loan both thread gauge rings from a local company. This made the thread turning to the correct size a lot easier. For rust protection I decided to do hot bluing on the bolt. On the two blue parts I only had to recut the threads.
I hope you like my work and the video.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsDomed Cap Nut - How its made (DIY)my mechanics insights2021-07-07 | In this video you can watch me making a domed cap nut from scratch. I started with a round bar and milled a hexagon on it. Then I moved over to the lathe and turned the domed cap first with a HSS form tool with the needed radius. After parting it off I was able to clamp it on the short cylindrical part of the dome in a collet. I then first turned the face clean and drilled and tapped the hole in it for the thread. To get a very nice finish I also sanded the hexagon clean with 240 grit at the end. I intentionally made this nut for the coffee grinder restoration as replacement part, because the original nut was very ugly. I later changed my mind and still restored the original one. So I ended up not using the new one, but I thought I could still share the recorded footage of me making it with you guys.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsMaking a Dead Blow Mallet - Inspired by PB Swiss Toolsmy mechanics insights2021-05-28 | In this video I'm going to make a dead blow mallet from scratch, inspired by the model of @PBSwissTools . Dead blow mallets with nylon heads are always used when you don't want to damage the parts when hammering. They're always very nice to work with because they have no rebound. To achieve that they mostly have lead balls inside of the hammer head. This version though has steel discs inside, which eliminates even more rebound than the lead balls. A dead blow mallet is definitely a must have tool in a shop. I reall like the ones from PB Swiss Tools and I'm not just saying that because it's a sponsored video. Top notch swiss quality. I really like the feature that you can replace the nylon heads and the handle if they break, both are available as original spare parts. If you're in need of a dead blow mallet and you can't make your own, than I highly recommend the ones from PB Swiss Tools. They come in different types and sizes. Check the links below.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsMaking Power Hammer Dies for Black Beard Projects - with Lock Mechanismmy mechanics insights2021-03-13 | In this video I'm going to make new poer hammer dies for 'Black Beard Projects'. He asked me if I can make him a pair of new dies for his new power hammer to make damascus. We decided to make them out of 1.2344 (H13) steel, which is perfect for this kind of application. It's heat treatable and will be perfect to use with high temperatures when forging steel. The top die also has a lock mechanism included so the key can't fall out if it should come loose while working and destroy the piston. The heat treatment and especially the tempering of this steel was quite special. I made two tempering cycles at 600°C for two hours. This high tempering temperature will make sure that the abilities of the steel won't change if it gets hot while working up to 600°C. I wrapped them in stainless steel foil for the hardening so the dies will be sealed from oxigen to reach the part, this will pervent building scale. The parts only turned black because of the high tempering temperature, which I later removed by sandblasting them with glass beads. I really liked the look of the sandblasted parts so I left them like that and shipped them to Black Beard Projects. Be sure to check his video of our collaboration to see the dies in action.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanicsI Restored this Broken and Cracked Tank for Mister Patinamy mechanics insights2021-02-17 | Mister Patina was recently restoring a german stove from 1920. The tank of it was cracked, the thread for the cap was missing, the cap itself and more. As this job was too much for his current knowledge he asked me if I could help him. I really liked this challenge and I said yes. Soldering is also something I'm not very used to, so it will also be an interesting job for me and it would make a nice little video for the second channel. From the first pictures of the tank I haven't realized that this is made out of three parts. I quickly saw that when it arrived in my shop. That made it a lot easier to repair the cracks. I took all parts apart. Repaired the cracks from the inside, covered all the inside to pervent future cracks and soldered the three parts back together. To stabilize the brittle tank I used aluminium rings. Then I turned a new part with an inside thread for the fuel cap and soldered that in place. After that I made the fuel cap and the bleed screw, to seal them I used one o-ring each which worked absolutely perfect. I gave the whole thing a nice brushed finish and the job was done.

My PayPal: my_mechanics@hotmail.comI turn a Railroad Track into an Anvil! Simple & Easy DIY - Homemade Anvilmy mechanics insights2020-07-10 | As you might know from my Instagram posts, I've recently restored and cleaned my workshop. Under a lot of trash, covered in dust, I found an old railroad track. I had no idea it was there and obviously I had no use for it. For that reason I decided to make a small anvil out of it. I always wanted to have a small one. First I went online and did some research about anvils. After I had an idea how it should look like I started to cut it in shape with the angle grinder. I milled the surfaces flat after a rough shaping with the angle grinder and drilled a hole in it. If you don't have access to a milling machine, you could also grind the surfaces clean with an angle grinder. Having the top surfaces finished I was able to start shaping the horn. First I cut of the biggest pieces with the angle grinder and then I started to shpae the horn. Rough shaping at first with the angle grinder, then smoothing out with a file and then sandpaper. To remove all the rust I decided to give it a quick sandblast. If you don't have access to a sandblaster you could also remove the rust with a wire wheel or just grind it all clean with the angle grinder. For rust protection I used cold bluing. I then sanded all the functional surfaces clean again. This also gave the whole thing a nice touch and some contrast. I'm more than happy how it turned out and I can't wait to start using it on future projects.
I hope you like my work and the video.

My Patreon Page: patreon.com/mymechanics1959 Broken Air Compressor - Repair and Maintanencemy mechanics insights2020-07-03 | My current compressor did get broken recently and I couldn't get any spare parts for it. I already was on the way to buy a new one, when my uncle told me that I can have his old one. He used it sometimes until it got broken. The motor was still running and the compressor was still building up pressure, but something was wrong with it as it took forever to build up the pressure. I decided to disassemble it and take a look at it if I can fix it. First I removed the belt cover and the belt, so I could remove the compressor unit. The piston still moved very smooth, the cylinder walls looked very good and it had very good compression. After cleaning the valves and making a new gasket for the head I put it back together and fixed it back on the tank. Inside of the other valves and tubes was a lot of slime, a mix of old oil and water. I cleaned everything and sealed all threads with teflon tape. There was even more slime inside the tank, it took around 45 minutes to get it all out. I haven't really found a broken piece or something, I guess it was just all the dirt that made it not work properly anymore. The final test at the end showed that it works now absolutely perfectly again. It needs around 7 minutes to build up the pressure from 0 to 7.5 bar, if the pressure falls below 4.5 bar the compressor starts running again and it only needs another 3 minutes to get back up to 7.5 bar. This compressor will be a huge help from now on in my shop and I hope that I can work with it for a long time.
I hope you like my work and the video.

My PayPal: my_mechanics@hotmail.comBroken Vice Repair - Restorationmy mechanics insights2020-04-30 | Last time when I visited my friend with the spray booth to paint the Gresel bench vice, he told me that his vice is broken. I looked at it and saw that it wasn't running as smooth as it should anymore. He took it off his bench and gave it to me to take a look at it. I asked you guys on Instagram and Facebook if you'd like to see a video of this on my second channel and you all clearly said yes. After the disassembling I've quickly found the issue, the beginning of the threads of the spindle were damaged. I removed all the burrs with the rotary grinder and used grinding compound to remove all damage on the thread and that was it to get it running again. Half way through the job I decided to go a bit further than just a repair job. I talked to my friend and we decided to give it a new paint job as well. Also a light restoration on all the parts. A bit unusual for a „my mechanics“ video are definitely all the new screws, but just for a quick job this was definitely the right decission. You'll never doing something wrong when replacing old with new screws when taking something apart and put it back together. We also discovered an until unknow function of this vice, it can rotate! That's a very cool feature of this little vise in my opinion. After all I think it turned out very well just for a quick repair job.
I hope you like my work and the video.
