โซ Fun Fact 2: This piece was partically inspired by "I Love Lucy," the popular 1950s American television sitcom. I wanted to create something that gave me that vibe. It was also partially inspired by La La Land.

Not until I was an adult did I learn that it was written by Stevie Wonder as a petition to the US Government to implement a National Holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It has since become one of my favorite songs with one of my favorite messages.
For the past 10 years of my life, I've sung this song at performances, with students, and I now present to you my attempt at a worthy cover. It's been 3 years in the making. I sincerely hope you enjoy!
Facts from the end of my video: 1) Stevie Wonder released this song in 1981 to help convince the nation to create MLK Day. 2) 6 million people signed a petition, which became the largest in US History. 3) The US House passed a bill with a veto-proof majority, and President Reagan signed it into law in 1983. 4) The holiday was observed for the first time on January 20, 1986. 5) South Carolina began recognizing the holiday in 2000, the last state to do so.Happy 2021๐ต (a Drumming, Singing, Looping, Dancing, Celebration!)AaronGrooves2021-01-08 | 2021 is already off to a crazy start, but my goal remains the same. This is what I did for Michael Jackson's birthday, 8/29. Recreated his awesome 4-part harmony in a live loop. "Off the Wall" by Rod Temperton. Produced by the one and only @quincyjones.
I learned SO much from deconstructing these harmonies. Needless to say, I was blown away -- not only by how perfect they are, but by Michael Jackson's insanely amazing voice. Grace, elegance, power, control. Energetic vibratos contrasted with steady tones. Smooth as silk.
When the bass voice switches from roots to 7ths ("enjoy yourself"), it gives me chills every time. Delicious. I know that Quincy Jones produced this, and I wonder if he also arranged these rich harmonies.

The melodies & atmospheres created by David Wise brought a new aesthetic to the genre, and the programming required to achieve this on the Super Nintendo had never been done before. It's arguably one of the most transformative pieces of video game music.
This piece in particular, "Aquatic Ambience," is one that I could listen to forever. There is such layered richness and variety that I never grow bored of it.
For this arrangement, I created a loop reminiscent of the original soundscape, then play melody, chords, and improvisations on piano.

In honor of this amazing show and amazing music, please enjoy my rendition, "Stranger Aarons" ๐ต๐ฅ๐ต. And a huge thank you to the original composers, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein!
- I've been pulled over for "driving while black" half a dozen times. - I was once suspended in high school by a prejudiced administrator. - I receive hundreds of Youtube comments about skin color (3 in the past 24 hours). - Several of my college professors singled me out for being black (most had good intentions). - I was once threatened by a group of white dudes in a pickup truck, who screamed the n-word at me while flipping me off. I fled into a nearby restaurant for safety. - I was once nearly rammed off the highway by a man yelling the n-word at me in a large pickup truck. He was yelling through a loudspeaker. I guess this was a hobby of his. - Iโve been threatened by a cop. He was off-duty.
For the most part, I remain enthusiastically positive and full of joy; but there are times when I become paralyzed by frustration and sadness. Sometimes I just feel black and blue. So I decided to express these emotions through music, with a little help from my clones. We rearranged Fats Wallers's original 1929 tune and modified the lyrics, originally written by Harry Brooks and Andy Razaf:
Cold empty bed, heart full of lead Pain in my head, wish I were dead What did I do to be so black and blue?
No joy for me, no company, Brutality, Why canโt I be free? All my life through, Iโve been so black and blue
I'm right inside, but that don't help my case โCause I can't hide what is in my face
Iโm so forlorn, lifeโs just a thorn, My heart is torn, why was I born? What did I do to be so black and blue?
I hope you enjoy the music! I also hope that you are an ally in the fight for justice and equity. Racism is only one part of a much bigger picture, and we need to understand this system in order to successfully transform it. Here are a few free resources that Iโve been referring people to:

It focuses on triple laterals, one of my favorite techniques on marimba, and super satisfying to play.
It would be an understatement to say that Paul Smadbeck is a personal hero of mine. His music opened a world of technique and possibility that transformed my approach to marimba. He has composed some of the most-performed, iconic marimba literature, and he has pushed the envelope of what's capable on this instrument.
I'm performing here on malletKat, as I do not currently own a marimba. Please enjoy!
My Instagram: instagram.com/aaronismusicI Wrote My Mom a Mothers Day Song: Mama I Love You aka Mama LuvAaronGrooves2020-05-12 | I wrote this song for Mother's Day. I finished recording it at midnight ๐.
When I was a kid, I didn't realize how much my mother had sacrificed. Yes, she did the normal mom things like drive me places, work extra jobs to feed me, attend school events, buy me things whenever she could, teach me ethics, have my back whenever I was picked on -- and I am grateful for all of this -- but there is so much more.
My mother is a smart, curious, life-long learner. She put her interests, career, and so many other things on hold in order to focus solely on providing for my siblings and I. In these recent years since we've all left the nest, she has graduated from college, earned a Master's degree, begun teaching and counseling children, and last week I found out that she is learning violin! She is truly an amazing woman.
I am positive that all mothers go through some form of self sacrifice for their children. The lyrics in this song are meant to acknowledge and thank them for it. You're welcome to share with your mother if you like. And if you are a mother, my hat is off to you!

The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846โ893, is a collection of two sets of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, composed for solo keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1722. Prelude No. 1 in C Major is the first prelude of the first set, and one of the most-recognized compositions in classical music.
