33 Immortals is an action-packed cooperative game in which departed souls rebel against God’s final judgment, fighting for their eternal life. The world created by the Thunder Lotus team is based on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, an inexhaustible well of rich literary ideas I was able to draw inspiration from for the music.
The studio wanted the soundtrack to feel medieval, religious, sacred and epic. We knew that the human voice would play an important role in shaping its texture. In collaboration with Italian composer Alessandro Garino, we wove fragments of La Commedia’s ancient Italian text into the music, transforming them into rhythmic, religious-like mantras.
Beatrice, embodied in the music through the voice of Jeanne Laforest, serves as a guide, a beacon of hope and support for the rebellion. The choir is the rebellion itself: A unified force that surges in defiance at moments of heightened intensity. I wanted to avoid a purely classical vocal approach, as the game’s theme, emancipation from the stronghold of religious institutions, called for something more untamed.
Throughout the composition process, I kept returning to this quote by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: “Dante recognized that every system of spiritual order, when it becomes incorporated into a worldly structure like an organized church, begins to suffer the effect of entropy. So to extract meaning from a system of beliefs, a person must first compare the information contained in it with his or her concrete experience, retain what makes sense, and then reject the rest.”
Imagining and bringing to life a musical representation of Inferno and Purgatorio has been a pleasure, and I’m eager to get started on Paradiso, which will be included in a future version of the game and its soundtrack.

When I was writing this piece, I was tired and emotional—in a good way. Most of my composition sessions were fragmented into short piano improvisations, away from the wearying computer screen. I was trying to translate musically a few thoughts and reflections that had been occupying my mind at the time. I had been reading voraciously, and a phrase from Peter Wohlleben’s The Hidden Life of Trees stayed with me, which inspired the title of this song. Even as someone who enjoys solitude, I’ve learned over the years that life is a complex, interdependent system, and the belief that we can do it all on our own is an illusion. We are strengthened by nurturing the healthy relationships in our lives, and those relationships carry us forward in countless ways. Furthermore, we sometimes have to let go, give up control, and allow certain aspects of our lives to take care of themselves—they will bloom on their own.

For a long time, I’ve had a tendency to avoid using the word “love”. I have an aversion to everything that becomes over-commercialized, overused, and stripped of its original value and meaning as a result. However, fatherhood and recent events have reshaped my understanding of the word, and it has taken on a new meaning for me. I’ve realized how pure, unconditional and ever-expanding love can be. I usually prefer to let the meaning of songs unfold in the listener’s imagination, to stay up to interpretation, but in this case, love was too omnipresent in my life during the composition phase to exclude its essence from the title.

Writing this album for me was about adapting and accepting change in challenging phases of life. About embracing (and sometimes intently choosing to reject) new realities in transformational times, from a societal or personal perspective.
Most of these songs were recorded during the pandemic. Like a lot of us, I was in a very unsettled state of mind that forced me to nurture some of my most natural inclinations. I realized how important calm, quiet, immersion in nature (sounds captured in forests were added to the recordings) and introspection were in my life, especially in times of incessant background noise. But also how nothing compares to the in-person relationships we have with our loved ones no matter how complicated of a journey nurturing those relationships can sometimes be.
I have to be honest with who I am and there are many ways in which our society has evolved that do not bring the best out of me. My mind thrives in environments where my attention is not constantly solicited by new information, content and the hectic distraction inducing nature of algorithmic media, social or other. I have to learn to better balance responsible awareness and engagement with personal well-being.
This all led me to change my process, to compose with a different intent. I tried capturing the beauty of vulnerability and imperfection in the way instruments were chosen, recorded and played, to do as many steps of the composing process away from a computer screen when possible. Thank you to all the amazing musicians (mentioned above) that have allowed me to bring the music to life.
I had planned on including half a dozen more songs in this album, but I felt they belonged to another emotional world. I realized this was because of one reason, they had been written after the birth of my daughter. I decided to include those songs on another album which will be released later this year. The Future Is History - Max LLMax LL2024-04-10 | Song from my new album "In The Silence I Can Finally Hear", my first full-length personal album since Golestan in 2018.

I decided to include those songs on another album which will be released later this year.Life in Projections - Max LLMax LL2024-04-08 | Song from my new album "In The Silence I Can Finally Hear", my first full-length personal album since Golestan in 2018.

The first two tracks of this EP were originally written for a film by director Karim Shaaban about the evolving relationship between humans and cities. I decided to push the concept further to create a musical offering that could stand on its own. The direction our world is heading in is always on my mind so it was inevitable that some of my reflections would eventually end up in musical form.

Synopsis: In a remote Himalayan region, the villagers of Maikot are preparing for the harvest of a mysterious aphrodisiac caterpillar-mushroom worth more than gold. Lalita, a young mother, had to let go of her dreams after getting married because of the social pressures of her community. As the whole village departs to the mountains, she joins the journey to the high-altitude pasturelands in hope of providing a better life for her family through the hazardous harvest of the rare mushroom. Set against the backdrop of stunning mountainous landscapes, the film presents an intimate and humane portrait of characters that put everything on the line for a chance to ascend to greener pastures.

I composed We Weathered the Night in the spring of 2020 while quarantining in the countryside during the first months of the pandemic. At the time, there was an air of uncertainty and bewilderment gripping our societies, but also a sense of possibility. 2 years have passed since, I’m still not sure where we’ve ended. We haven’t enacted some of the profound changes one could’ve hoped for but there are certainly ways in which we showed extreme resilience, empathy and collective strength in the face of adversity.

Spiritfarer is a project that’s very close to the heart for me and the talented team at Thunder Lotus Games. It’s a positive, colourful and serene adventure about life, grief and compassion, where you guide spirit friends to the afterlife after caring for them in their last moments. It's not only about saying goodbye to characters but reflecting on what they leave after they've gone. It hopes to help us better address and openly discuss the subject of death, a common reality we’re all faced with.
The times we are living through have made the experience of writing music for this project all the more meaningful and I feel like Spiritfarer couldn’t have come at a better moment. The connections and relationships we develop with our friends and families stay with us, we have to treasure them, be more compassionate as individuals and a society, and better learn to say goodbye when the time comes.Mind Palace (Spiritfarer Farewell Edition) - Max LLMax LL2021-12-28 | I've been getting lots of requests to upload some of the tracks from the Spiritfarer DLC 1 & 2 updates, so there you go!
