Adblockers: I assume a majority of my audience uses them, such as Ublock Origin, 1blocker, Ghostery, and so on. The problem is that these require browser extensions, but how will I block ads on my Sony TV or make sure my Hue lights aren't spying on me?
Well, we have an answer: Pi-hole. As the name implies, Pi-hole is a web utility originally designed to run on a Raspberry Pi, although we can run it almost anywhere. I'll cover first on a Mac and then a few other devices, and it's really set up. Like, we are talking about 5 minutes.

So, where do I go from here? I started this series looking at Sonnet PCIe enclosures because you can add PCIe slots to any modern Mac. That's good but I think what I also need a network-attached storage computer, aka a NAS, which is basically a home server. That way, I'm not entirely relying on Apple, and at least my data can live in a more open ecosystem.
Ugreen being the new guy means a blank slate and there’s a lot of opportunity for them.

I recently bought a Mac mini G4 off ebay. It’s a computer that I’ve wanted for a very long time.
That is you don’t consider the innards I’m sure my audience is super familiar with this computer. It received a lukewarm reception as the G4 was very long in tooth. This was not the computer you bought because of its exciting performance in a cool form factor, it was Apple’s cheapest entry into the Macintosh Ecosystem.

I managed to pick up a Mighty Mouse for $1. The Mighty Mouse was the first multi-button mouse Apple made in its history and wasn't released until 2005. Instead of the scroll wheel, it featured a mini trackball for scrolling, with left and right zones for left left and right click, and side buttons for a squeeze function. It’s unconventional, but seems like they might be onto something.

What if a counterfeit Apple product didn't suck?
I made a video about the Apple Superdrive, and someone thought I bought fake one on eBay because it didn't have an Apple logo under side drive. That made double check it contrary to that comment, mine does have the logo, and it's definitely legitimate.
patreon.com/dmug
Modern macOS still supports optical media pop in a disc, and it'll mount . albeit slower than the Apple SuperDrive.
To test out the drive, I used a CD and the popular open-source utility, Burn.

Installing isn't incredibly difficult if you have a virtual machine or Windows PC to install half life on. You need to do this so you can nab source folder from the PC install. I found I had to install Game of the year edition in Windows, and then go into the Half Life directory, and drag the source folder into my username/Library/Application Support/Xash3D

As a Mac guy, I understand I have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to PC offerings. I’ve been aware that mini-PCs have existed for a long time, but I’ve never used one, held one or even seen on in person. This tiny PC comes with a 14-Core CPU, 6 performance cores 8 efficiency Core, it comes standard with 32 GBs of DDR4, and 1 TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD.
Geekom also wants you to know it's celebrating it's 21s year in the industry and an XT Pro 13th gen is in the works and that they do Amazon Prime Day discounts.

While emulators like OpenEmu do a reasonable job of emulating the Playstation , it doesn’t have the advanced graphical features of DuckStation. You can experience Playstation at 4k in widescreen, texture smoothing and faster load times and this tutorial explore the many features of Duckstation.
One of the advantages of the Duckstation emulator is to play games at MUCH higher resolutions and visual fidelity. This is especially noticeable on 3D games. Your mileage will be vary, newer Macs with dedicated GPUs or Apple Silicon era Macs should be able to crank the resolution.

As a refresher, PCIe slots use pairs of wires for sending a receiving data. One pair is one lane. 4x PCIe slot has 4 sets of wires which means it has 4 lanes. More lanes equals more data, and this card can address 16x lanes, hence 4 SSDs.

blog.greggant.com/posts/2024/01/31/install-windows-steam-games-on-apple-silicon.html
Before you dive in, make sure you have an Apple Silicon Mac, preferably running macOS 14 Sonoma for the best experience. A higher-spec Mac, with 16 GB of RAM, will perform even better. Also, keep in mind that games can take up a significant amount of space, so ensure you have enough free storage. The first step is to download Whisky, a tiny app that will prompt you to install Rosetta 2, a translation technology by Apple, essential for running Windows software. This download totals over 400 MBs.
Now, head to the Steam website and download the Windows version of Steam. Whisky uses WINE, and WINE bottles are self-contained environments that allow Windows applications to run on non-Windows operating systems. Create a new bottle, open the C drive, and drag the SteamSetup.exe into the drive_c folder. Return to Whisky, click Run, and select SteamSetup to complete the setup process. Sign in to your Steam account. Install games as usual,. While some older titles may not work, you'll find that many DirectX 11 and 12 games run seamlessly, offering you an impressive gaming experience on your Apple Silicon Mac. Be sure to check game compatibility resources mentioned below to stay updated on supported titles as Whisky continues to evolve.

This is a short rant I've had for a while, and I debated posting it. I can't help feeling Apple left Mac Pro 2019 owners holding the bag and treating them badly. Apple still has not supported the AMD 7000 series GPUs, aka Navi 31, which is AMD's 5 nm Chiplet technology; they were released one year ago, December 13th, 2022.

Usually in my videos I like to place the hardware I'm talking about in beautiful locations but I wanted to branch out and talk briefly about the beautiful location I'm visiting. There's so much to say about Astoria, as also was captured by the British during the war of 1812 and renamed to Fort George before being returned to the US and one of the two locations where Japan attacked the United States during WW2 when a Japanese submarine fired on Fort Stevens. As a history dork, with an affinity for the PNW, Astoria is steeped with history.

What makes this particular PowerMac of interest, is it that ability to OS X 10.2-10.5 and with a bit of hacking, also Mac OS 9, meaning it's also the fastest Mac OS 9 computer Apple shipped. That's an important distinction to made as you can upgrade these guys to dual 2 GHz 7448s, which are improved G4s that Apple never shipped but have double the L2 Cache, clocking at 1 MB over the 7455, faster front bus and lower power consumption thanks to a newer manufacturing node, from 130 nm to 90 nm.
My idea was that I'd have a visually clean build that sits onto of my filing cabinet, hidden cables so I'd have a functional and out of the way retro Mac.

This particular MacBook is Core 2 Duo variant, also known as a late 2006 MacBook or a MacBook 2,1. To fix this up, I've ordered 4 GB of RAM off eBay, an SSD, and a battery. This is probably too much money for a computer this old, as I ended up paying around $100 for the computer and to get it operational, and I don't exactly make big YouTube to justify such silly things.

So I went on an eBay hunt for a RX 580 and Amazon for a SATA SSD to see if I could make an old computer feel a bit newer. In the process I benchmarked my Mac Pro for disk and GPU improvements. I don't exactly make big YouTube money so this was kinda a dumb purchase. I really figured this video would have been all of 8~ minutes long and finished in a weekend.... was I ever wrong.

pFriem's Druif Blanc - A bit of a backstory on this beer, the first time I had it was "Druif" and it was brand new at the brewery before they made variants of Druif. I had to manually enter the beer info into Untappd making me the first person check the beer in. It'd later win the GABF Gold for barrel aged beer. I recognized it was fantastic from the jump, although not my first pick as chardonnay barrels aren't my jam. It bites a lot like a good white wine and has the tartness and bit of herbal spice to it. Truly one of those "beer as an experience" sort of beer.
