This narrative strikingly mirrors the experience of many within the Jehovah's Witnesses, where living in fear under the guise of faith is a common thread.For Jehovah's Witnesses, the organization itself can often feel like the Emerald City – a place of hope and salvation, guided by the seemingly omnipotent and all-knowing governing body. Members are taught to follow the 'yellow brick road' of the organization's doctrines, believing that it leads to spiritual safety and paradise. However, much like Dorothy and her friends, they are often plagued by fears – fear of the outside world, fear of disapproval from the community, and most significantly, fear of displeasing the governing body, their 'Wizard'.The Wizard in Oz uses grandeur and illusion to maintain control, instilling fear and obedience. Similarly, the governing body of Jehovah's Witnesses holds its sway by dictating life choices, sowing fear of Armageddon, disfellowshipping, and the loss of community and family. Members live with the constant anxiety of not doing enough, not being devout enough, which parallels the Scarecrow's fear of not having a brain, the Tin Man's fear of lacking a heart, and the Lion's fear of missing courage.But just as in 'The Wizard of Oz', the moment of revelation comes when the curtain is pulled back. For many Jehovah's Witnesses, this moment occurs when they start questioning the teachings, the contradictions, or when they suffer personal injustices that the organization fails to address. This is their Toto moment, pulling back the curtain to reveal that the fearsome Wizard is just a man – that the governing body is not infallible and that the fears instilled in them are tools of control rather than expressions of divine will.This realization is both liberating and disorienting. This is the number of baptized individuals who partake of the emblems at the Memorial worldwide. Does this total represent the number of anointed ones on earth? Not necessarily. A number of factors—including past religious beliefs or even mental or emotional imbalance—might cause some to assume mistakenly that they have the heavenly calling. We thus have no way of knowing the exact number of anointed ones on earth; nor do we need to know. The Governing Body does not keep a list of all partakers, for it does not maintain a global network of anointed ones. *The previous paragraph cross references the next articleSee the article “The Faithful Steward and Its Governing Body,” in the June 15, 2009, issue of The Watchtower, page 24.15 On the other hand, how should other Christians view a person who claims to have received this anointing and begins to partake of the emblems at the Memorial? He or she should not be judged. The matter is between this person and Jehovah. (Rom. 14:12) However, Christians who have truly received this anointing do not demand special attention. They do not believe that their being of the anointed gives them special insights beyond what even some experienced members of the “great crowd” may have. (Rev. 7:9) They do not believe that they necessarily have more holy spirit than their companions of the “other sheep” have. (John 10:16) They do not expect special treatment; nor do they claim that their partaking of the emblems places them above the appointed elders in the congregation.16 Are all these anointed ones throughout the earth part of a global network that is somehow involved in revealing new spiritual truths? No. Although as a composite body the slave class is responsible for feeding the spiritual household, not all individuals of the slave class have the same responsibilities or work assignments.
