TecFoxThose AKAI sample libraries surely were popular back then. Compiling this list took forever. I hope someone finds this at least a bit interesting. Sorry if it's a bit too fast at some points.
If anyone knows more about one of the samples mentioned at the end of the video please let me know.
You may notice I didn't include Spyro 2 which is known for using a lot of samples. The reason is exactly that. The amount of samples used in this game could fill a whole video on their own and this one was already long enough. Maybe I'll do a second part in the future which focuses just on the Spyro games.
Finally, here are some timestamps for those who are just interested in a specific game:

This time mainly with focus on the Spyro games. Though most of the samples are from Ripto's Rage. It might not be that exciting and it can drag on a bit but I really wanted to get this out. Hopefully the ordering of the list isn't too confusing.

Organizing this was a pain but in the end it was totally worth it. The original song is only an Amiga module with 4 channels but there's just so much going on in there. Aside from a tool to convert note data to something more readable no tools were used during the actual building process which alone took about 10 days. Everything was build by hand. Hope you like it.Detective Pikachu dances on the Game BoyTecFox2019-05-22 | This simply had to be made. Now Pikachu can dance on the Game Boy for all eternity. Technically this player could actually run at 60 fps. If you like watching a 5 seconds long video on a tiny screen that is.
Sorry, if the picture is a bit mushy. I tried to clean it up a bit with some color correction and sharpening but in the end there isn't much I can do. It's pretty difficult to record something from a small frontlit screen.
Also sorry for not uploading anything for quite a while. Life has been busy and I'm also not good at coming up with ideas.

Music: Approaching 0 by LindeSpeed Freaks Menu ThemeTecFox2018-04-07 | The menu theme from the racing game Speed Freaks. You might think it plays too fast but this is the tempo the music was supposed to be played at. For some reason the game caps the tempo at 150 BPM which is why the drums always sound a bit weird in-game.
Composed by Martin SchiolerGameBoy Bad Apple DemoTecFox2018-02-18 | I actually finished this project last year but I wanted to update the audio playback routines to the newer version before recording it to improve the sound quality a bit.
I know this has already be done however the person who did it used an 8MB ROM whereas I only have a 4MB cart. I had to start from scratch but I think in the end I came up with a similar encoding method. My version may only have 1 bit per pixel instead of 2 and run at 25 instead of 30 fps but it has better sound quality.
Technically the player CAN run at 30 fps but the resulting video data wouldn't fit onto the cart anymore. In the end I was able to squeeze the whole thing into 3.75 megabytes.
Also sorry for the focusing issues. I couldn't find a way to turn off the auto-focus. AF tracking helped a little but it's not perfect.
If you want to take a look at this demo yourself you can get it here: https://www.binary-fennec.de/file/TIRFnQ0EQ8uzHhZrtHxOw90UWDSwUfNhKanR
Note: The only emulator I could find which is able to emulate the audio playback properly is KiGB. Though it does require a small patch due to some emulation inconsistencies. The archive contains the patched ROM as well as the one used for the GBA. Due to the issue with KiGB mentioned above, the audio might also not work properly on a Game Boy Color.GameBoy Synthesizer Demo - RoboCop 3 ThemeTecFox2018-01-02 | Another attempt at pushing the GameBoy to its limits. This is a demo of a 3-channel wavetable software synthesizer running at about 7.1 kHz. I tried to keep the V-Blank interrupt as short as possible, but the routine is still quite complex and with a CPU which effectively runs at 2 MHz, there isn't really much left that can be optimized.
Honestly I don't know what was more difficult to make. The synthesizer itself or the load of tools to convert the C64 tune to the format the synthesizer uses. I had quite some issues with converting the data for the noise waveform. It's still a bit glitchy but it's the best i could achieve. Also, since the original tune runs at 50 Hz, I had to convert it to 60 Hz so the timing is a bit wonky.
"Features" of the synthesizer:
- 3 individually programmable channels - 5 different sounds: sine, triangle, sawtooth, pulse and noise - 8-bit pulse width control - 7-bit volume control (shouldn't go above 85 though, otherwise the output sample might overflow) - Bandlimit-Level override (An experimental thing. Not used here. In theory it allows for a lowpass-like effect but it's pointless at such a low output quality)
Fun fact: The generated output has a resolution of 8-bit but is quantized to 43 levels for playback.
Original song: RoboCop 3 Theme (C64) by Jeroen TelGTA IV - All monophonic ringtonesTecFox2017-12-11 | I know listening to this gets a bit annoying after a while but when I started with this I didn't know there were so many ringtones. Although, whether some of them can even be considered as ringtones at all is questionable.Driver 1 PSX Soundtrack - Beta SongTecFox2017-11-08 | Either an earlier or a superior version of what would eventually become the chase theme for Miami at Night.
