Kudos and thanks to Henry for designing and showing me how to fold this simple and awesome origami model. As you see in the video he also did an excellent job demoing the model, including two perfect boomerang flicks and an impressive flick across the room toward his webcam.

PREREQUISITE: Much simpler Magic Cube that I taught on YouTube here:
youtu.be/g145BnZVtJY
I originally saw this 3-cube optical illusion (non-origami) at the Exploratorium in San Francisco and it is what inspired me to design the much simpler Magic Cube.
Recently (just last week) I designed this origami Triple Cube Optical Illusion with my Zoom tutoring session student, Lucas, who requested we try to fold an optical illusion of some sort, and this was one I was familiar with, but surprisingly, had never tried to design out of origami. So, this model was inspired by his request, but in designing it I definitely led the way. I also led the way in designing the pyramid inside-a-pyramid optical illusion also featured in the intro, and I taught a version of it during the May 2023 Eastern Hemisphere Members Livestream.
I was trying to figure out the name of this triple-cube shape and it turns out it is one of the pieces of the Soma Cube Puzzle, in particular it's Piece 7, the "P" piece.
This is a fun one to bring to parties. See who can see the illusion, and then let them try to help those who can't see it.

This model was inspired by a request from my student Atharv to design on the spot a howling coyote/wolf while teaching it to him, all during his half hour Zoom tutoring session with me. Alas, I failed the challenge... At the end of the 30 minutes our model looked more like a unicorn llama instead. But that failure became my inspiration to design this model, and I'm really happy with how it turned out! It's realistic looking and the folding sequence full of clear landmarks so the it's not too hard to fold.

I recommend using a 6-inch (15 cm) square of origami paper.
This model was inspired by a request from my student Lucas during his Zoom tutoring session with me. During the session we tried to design a real (non-oscillating) fidget spinner together, but it didn't work too well. After the session I took on the challenge again and went in a totally different direction.

Discovering this model went something like this: Me 3 days ago: Ok, time to get a video out... Let's look up on YouTube what videos are trending. Oh look, the The Little Mermaid Trailer is trending. I proceed to design a mermaid. 4 hours later...Success, but UGG that would take too long to teach and would boys even click on it??? What else is there? Let's check VidIQ Daily Ideas. Oooh, Origami Common King Fisher bird is recommended. Let's design that! 30 minutes later... origami king fisher bird prototype done but is king fisher really trending???... Let's check out some king fisher bird videos. Wow, cool video of a king fisher bird diving into water to catch prey! Wow nature is amazing! I wanna see more videos of birds catching fish... Oooh Puffins! Wow, they are so cute! I wanna try to fold that! One head, one tail, and two little legs.... Easy!...Fish Base!...15-minutes later...Done! OMG, I can make a much simpler Magic Flap out this base!.. Why didn't I think of that before? Hmm., what else can be made from the Fish Base Magic Flap.... Oh ya... a FISH! 4 minutes later... Nice fins and tail but the head looks kind of square. What can I do with these extra flaps. Well, of course...EYES!... Nice! I turn it upside down... Oooh, that looks kind of like a rabbit face and ears! I wonder if I could make the rest of the rabbit. Struggle struggle... one hour later... I give up!... I'll just hide the legs inside and it can be a bunny lying down. Ooh, that's pretty cute! I wonder if it can jump. YES!! Cannonball Carrot Jumping Bunny! That's four models in one! Ok, I got my video for the week!

It has been brought to my attention that the Iso-Area Octahedron is not a new model but already previously designed by Toshikazu Kawasaki and published in Origami for the Connoisseur. I didn't intentionally redo his design, but I should have been aware of it as I have that book. I bought it over 30 years ago and if I've folded that model, it's been that long! I did build upon it with the octahemioctahedron, but still, if I am asked by Kawasaki to take this video down I will.
Flashers themselves are based on the iso-area folding of Kawasaki. So his origami is like the building blocks for all flashers.
Iso-area basically means it has the same folding pattern on the front and back, usually with a change in direction (clockwise/clockunwise😜). An octahemioctahedron (also called an octatetrahedron) is a cuboctahedron that has been partially faceted. 'Faceting' is sort of the opposite of stellating (faceting takes area away from the polyhedron whereas stellating adds area onto it).
This model was inspired by my Zoom student Lucas's request to fold a flasher from a triangular grid. We folded the Simple Hexagonal Flasher and I challenged him as origami homework to try to figure out how to fold the iso-area version (which I had already done as part of my collaborations with Chris Palmer in the 1990s). After the session, I did the homework (Iso-Area Hexagonal Flasher), and as I was playing around with it I discovered that it could be closed to form an octahedron, and then I discovered that the six corners could be sunk to form the Octahemioctahedron.
After that, I tried to see if I could make a 16X16X16 grid version, but the extra layers made it a little too cumbersome, but I did discover a cool way to turn the 6 corners into crane heads, and, special for my members, I made a tutorial showing how to do that, as well as another tutorial showing how to turn an ordinary square of kami into a hexagon colored on one side and white on the other, making it possible to fold the Octahemioctahedron from a square of paper no cutting as shown in the intro (the orange and white model). Playing in the realm of hexagonal flashers I discovered that an iso-area hexagonal flasher can be rather easily folded into an iso-area octahedron and then upon further experimenting I ended up with a OCTAHEMIOCTAHEDRON! I hadn't even heard of the word 'octahemioctahedron' before designing this model. I was just gonna call it a funny-looking cuboctahedron, but looking on the internet I happened upon the exact same shape in the contents of John Montroll's book A Plethora of Polyhedra with the correct title: 'octahemioctahedron.' (but folded differently). I just published the tutorial on my channel.

This model evolved out of my unsuccessful attempt to make origami fireworks out of origami right triangles during a Zoom tutoring session with Cliff Landesman, who is working on illustrating the building blocks of calculus using hinged and unhinged origami structures, and has booked me for several Zoom sessions as an origami consultant. The previous session with Cliff resulted in our creation of an origami construction of the Haberdasher Dissection Puzzle, which you can fold here: youtu.be/s-n6FIfYncc. This model was designed January 2023 orgami / origami by Jeremy Shafer for his youtube channel -- video number 1215.
TIPS for getting the optical illusion work. The gimmick needs to line up perfectly with the first bar and adjacent second bar and you probably will need to close one eye in order to be able to successfully view the optical illusion. This is because two eyes viewing would be in two places so it would be impossible to get it perfectly lined up from both places at the same time. If the gimmick is to long, you have two choices: you can shorten it by folding more off the tip or you can just view the model at a farther distance. Although I didn't show it in the video or thumbnail, I recommend trying to slightly narrow the gimmick flap with a tapered valley fold on its bottom edge, because as it is, you can kind of see in the thumbnail, where the blue bar and green bar come together, the gimmick's face looks unrealistically wide.
While it would be theoretically possible to make this model from one long rectangular sheet of paper, the difficulty in making the right-angle turns cleanly would make it a headache to fold and an even bigger headache to teach! So, instead, I opted for this modular approach. I'm happy with simple bars and connector units I designed here, and I think this has potential to be applied to making a host of other geometric shapes, especially if I can figure out how to make tri-vertex and quadra-vertex connector pieces (if one of you doesn't beat me to it! 😂).
I did a little investigation to try to figure out the origin of this solution to how to make a 3D Penrose Triangle in real life and the oldest video I found on YouTube was uploaded by Michael42er 5 years ago, but he cites an older now defunct Japanese blog called Ikemath as to where he got his blueprint from. As for the original Penrose Triangle, It turns out that it was not first discovered by Roger Penrose in the 1950s but instead by Swedish graphic artist Oscar Reutersvärd in 1934 (according to Wikipedia), but in my opinion Penrose Triangle or Tribar has a better ring to it, than Reutersvärd Triangle.
This origami model is not that difficult to fold, but you literally need to have a very particular point of view in order to see the illusion!😅

Here are some additional ideas.... Instead of placing it on your finger, you can slip this Santa onto a branch of a Christmas tree. Or attach a hook to it to turn it into an ornament. It can also go on the end of a pencil, or just be a stand-alone Santa. If you fold it out of green paper it can be an elf!

This is the REAL Origami Stapler instead of the pretend one in Paper Mario The Origami King - Stapler Boss.
#HowDoesItStaple
#OrigamiStapler
#JeremyShaferOrigami
About the Intro... I didn't lie! I said, "MAGICALLY it even staples." It was a genuine sleight-of-hand magic trick that took many takes to successfully film without accidentally flashing the staples. I'm hoping my creating, performing and revealing of this trick might inspire you real magicians out there to develop and perfect this trick so that you might be able to actually perform it in front of live audiences.
How did I make the strip of staples? I first folded the square of gold foil in half so the white side was hidden. Then I made the two mountain folds to determine the width of the staples (which I matched to the the width of the inner silver part of the stapler) and folded whatever was extra toward the middle on the underside of the staples. Then I flattened the model and made series of mountain folds along the whole length to make it look like a strip of staples. And finally I refolded the two mountain folds.
I designed this model after the November 2022 Eastern Hemisphere Members Livestream during which member Dhiyan requested I try to design a stapler. I did manage to design a mini stapler on the spot, but after the livestream I challenged myself to design a better stapler, and this model was the result that evolved over many attempts. [Low intermediate] I designed this collapsible Suitcase w/ Wheels AFTER the October Eastern Hemisphere Members Livestream, livestream, because during the livestream I had tried and failed to design the 3D suitcase with handle requested by Nick. Nick only requested a suitcase with a handle, so I'm really happy with how this model turned out... The wheels even turn a little!

Here's my idea for a funny, completely harmless prank. The next time you are at the airport and the ticket agent asks "Do you have any more bags to check?" present them with this model and try to ask with a straight face: "Should I weigh it?" or "Do you recommend I check it or would it be better as carry-on?"
Or another opportunity for the prank is at the departure gate when the agents are asking for volunteers to check for free their carry-on bags to their final destination.

This model is essentially a brick wall tessellation folded from a brick wall tessellation with the iso-area twists positioned just right so that each one gets twisted twice. So it's essentially an easier way of making an origami flasher tessellation.
Special just for members I'm going to publish the version of this model from a 32X32 grid instead of a 16X16 grid, so the model ends up with a lot more bricks on the wall! I've filmed the tutorial but I'm still editing it and should finish it soon. Meanwhile, I have finished next week's public video and uploaded it, and given members early access to it, so if you join as a member you can view it now! What is it? Well, I want it to be a surprise, but I'll just say it's something 3D with wheels!🚍🦽🦼🛹🚲🛴🛵🏍🚖🚔🚘🚜🚛🚚🚒🚑🚎🚐🚌🚙🛺🚕🚓🚗📽🪐

This 4X4 Chessboard Flicker model is a modification of the 4X4 chessboard that was first discovered by Max Hulme, according to Peter Budai's paper published on his website here: http://www.budaiorigami.hu/en/chequered
The inspiration for me to turn the 4X4 checker board into an 8X8 modular chessboard using connector pieces came from Peter Budai's particular remark:
“Max Hulme’s model comes with the best scale factor in the 4X4 league, however it does not have any extra tabs to enable the firm assembly of four units into an 8X8 chessboard (unlike the rest of this compilation)”
So, I took it upon myself as a challenge to try to firmly connect four of the Max Hulme 4X4 Checkerboards using connector pieces. I started by using connector pieces that were the same size as the 4X4 checkerboards, but I quickly realized that it wasn't very feasible because the paper gets so thick, so I ended up using much smaller 1X2 rectangles (1/8th of the size of the original square). This method of connecting 4X4 checkerboards can be repeated to form a quilt as big as your patience and dexterity permit.
Even if you don't play chess, this model will make a fine coaster for a cup or glass, either the 4X4 version or the 8X8 modular version and it's a cool design. So in the words of Nike.... Chess do it!

I designed this model during a 30-minute Zoom tutoring session with my student, Rishi who had requested it. We successfully folded it in just about 12 minutes. In the time left over, he requested to fold a Ping Pong Table, and I managed to design that too while he folded along. It might seem surprising that it all happened in a half hour, but I have designed two people playing ping pong (a long time ago), so this Ping Pong Raquet and Table were relatively easy and straight forward to design. However, the heart on the back of the ping pong racket, the final tucking in of the flaps on the Ping Pong Table and the later discovery that the Table could be collapsed into a locked square for storage, well, ya, those were epiphanies!
Here is the tutorial for the Ping Pong Table: youtu.be/c1SqrTGhQO4
To fold a Ping Pong Raquet that fits into the pockets of the Ping Pong Table (as I showed in the Ping Pong Table tutorial), use a square that is 1/16 of the size of the Ping Pong Table. So for example, if you folded the Ping Pong Table from a 6-inch square, then you would want to fold the Ping Pong Racket from a 1.5-inch square, and to accomplish that, first fold the 6-inch square into a 4X4 grid and cut off a one unit square to fold the Ping Pong Racket. So if you want you could fold 16 tiny Ping Pong Rackets from one 6-inch square!
Now that you have the table and racket, you can play ping pong! How can you make a ball that will bounce on the table? I don't know; I haven't tried, but perhaps you could roll up a little ball of paper, tissue or aluminum foil. Let me know if you figure it out!

Common misspellings: oregami orgami oragami origame
The other cool features of this origami gift box compared to other origami twist boxes is that this one is easier to fold, it's clean-looking on both the inside and outside, and it's versatile -- the box and lid can be folded from any rectangular dimension of paper provided that it's no longer than than 3 X 1. So A4 paper, letter-sized paper or even dollar bills work fine! The crux of this model is the special guideline at timecode 4:43 that allows the formation of a heptagonal box with a slightly domed top, irrespective of how wide of rectangular paper you are using. That special guideline doesn't work well if the paper is longer than 3 X 1 because the corner will land above the top edge instead of on the crease, and besides that, it would create a really short box or lid. If you want a really short box you could use a 3 X 1 rectangle and trim it narrower AFTER making the special guideline. Once you have made the special guidelines on the left and right, the next step is to connect them with a horizontal crease. Slightly adjusting this horizontal crease up or down will create a more domed or less domed box, respectively.
Another nice thing about this heptagonal container is that it entails simply dividing the length into 8 and then overlapping by one unit as you insert one end into the other to form the heptagon. If you've tried to fold an origami twist container using other techniques, you might find it's more difficult to fold than this one and might not look as clean inside. Also having seven sides is perhaps more interesting and unusual than an origami octagonal box or hexagonal box. So in conclusion... it's a pretty sweet box!...So you might as well use it as a candy box!😋🍬🍭🍡

*According to Cliff Landesman, others have independently discovered the simplified square-to-isosceles-triangle version of the Haberdasher puzzle prior to Cliff's own discovery of it. I would venture to guess that Dudeney himself had also discovered it, because by the nature of the puzzle, that would seem like a logical step to figuring out the equilateral triangle version.

The jumping arrowhead in this tutorial has a similar form as the Super Ninja Slingshot Arrowhead that I taught here: youtu.be/TMsZD7BrRzg and both models can jump well and be used as a slingshot arrowhead. However, the one in this tutorial is larger and perhaps a little cleaner-looking. It's funny I didn't even remember about the Slingshow Arrowhead until putting the last final touches on this video! Luckily they are a bit different, but from a practical sense, they are probably interchangeable. It's funny I never realized that the Slingshot Arrowhead could jump, but now that I think about it (I don't even need to fold it) I'm sure it can jump super well, maybe even as well as this model.
Hope you enjoy playing with this cool new jumping origami toy, and btw.... This model can also be a jumping Star Trek logo / Star Trek badge. Beam me up Scotty!

Here's the background story to how I ended up designing a Jumping Dinosaur and a Jumping Kangaroo: At the July 2022 JSO Western Hemisphere Livestream (afternoon of Saturday July 30th), member, Nico, requested that I try to design a Jumping Kangaroo. I tried it but failed. Instead I ended up with a bad-looking dinosaur that didn't even jump. After the livestream I spent about four hours on my own trying to design a jumping kangaroo and finally managed to come up with a jumping kangaroo I was hoppy with. I successfully taught it at the Eastern Hemisphere livestream (Sunday 12am). Since I had also tried to make a jumping T-rex and failed at that too, a couple days later I started trying in earnest to design a jumping dinosaur to hopefully publish as my weekly public tutorial, and it took me several days and at least 30 attempts before I was satisfied enough to teach it. I still think there's room for improvement on this model and I invite you, my viewers, to try to figure out how to get it to look better or jump better, or to try to design and entirely different origami jumping dinosaur.

Print the template and follow the tutorial. The result is an origami BTS Logo that transforms into a BTS Army Logo (BTS fanbase logo), and then opens into a "I 🧡 BTS" Greeting Card consisting of BTS graphics I compiled. If you prefer to do your own BTS artwork or write a letter, simply use the templates that just include the Black BTS trapezoids and no other BTS graphics.
If you prefer to just use ordinary kami, you can still make the BTS logo; just follow the tutorial starting at 4:15 minute mark. This will make a fine BTS Logo Bookmark. However, with kami the BTS Logo will not transform into the BTS Army logo unless you use all white kami and draw the trapezoids onto it as they appear on the template. One of the templates is 6-inches wide so you can easily trace the trapezoids onto the 6-inch kami using a black pen (in case you don't have a printer).
And if you are a BTS fan that stumbled upon this video and is new to origami... WELCOME! This is a good easy model for beginners!
