The first is that we have almost no idea how they work, and the second is that there’s often shame around using them because so many people view issues of mental health and weight control as personal failings. In a recent article for the New York Times I argue that we should shift focus from these two things and focus instead on significantly improving people’s lives, which these drugs do.

But it’s not driven by everyone equally, and it doesn’t affect everyone equally. In the last 250 years, 77% of global emissions were emitted by Europe, North America, Australia, and Japan. At the same time, carbon emissions from nearly all low-income countries have been negligible compared to those of rich countries. On its face alone, that probably sounds like a reasonable argument. I, too, would like vaccines to be tested in randomized controlled trials – and thankfully, THEY ARE.
