This video pitches some context and ideas specific to early 2024 burnout that permeated several communities, including the tarot community. Although, I think many of these tips still hold up, if you're struggling to get into your tarot practice in a way that makes sense to you. I'm hoping to record an update video that includes where I'm at with my own practice, at some point. In the meantime, I await your discourse. :)

With a closer look at the Dragons Tarot, the Samurai Tarot, and the Tarot of the Pirates, we allow ourselves to be critical at their surface-level attempts of Multiculturalism during their mid-days of 2000s and inadvertent displays of Orientalism and Romanticism. Tarot has become an increasingly popular form of entertainment, self-care, and spirituality among contemporary audiences. As those audiences grew, a rightful demand for ethnic representation grew as well. African American presence in Tarot, either in the art or as artists—or both! — offers a fascinating look into the aesthetic, cultural, and spiritual identity that’s being created in cartomancy. With particular attention to diverse, specifically African American, tarot projects in the summer of 2020, African American artists bridge the gap between black pride and personal identity through a spiritual journey, recreating a cultural identity that is inherently African American. Since Dr. Hartman’s Lose Your Mother is largely the spark that created this research, my argument will attempt to challenge that notion that we are unable to find or make a space for ourselves as African American, and I will argue that, thanks to African American Tarot artists, such as Courtney Alexander, Tea and Ian, and Krystal Banner, African American Tarot readers like myself have a means to reach out to public memories that we have never known and recreate community.
