On January 19th, the German Bundestag passed a landmark reform of their citizenship laws - easing requirements and allowing for dual citizenship in Germany with non-EU citizens. Meanwhile, on the very same day, hundreds of thousands were marching against fascism and hatred at anti-nazi demonstrations across the country after senior members of the AfD discussed a βmaster planβ for the mass deportation of German asylum-seekers and German citizens of foreign origin.So to understand this new law, I think it is important to look back on the road that got us hereβ¦ and that means that we need to first understand how this new reform compares to existing citizenship regulations in other EU nations, to dispel some myths about who this opportunity applies to, and to talk about whatβs next.
