The Man in the Reservoir PDCS216 2024-09-29 | A reading of the short story "The Man in the Reservoir" from the forgotten 19th-century American poet and writer, Charles Fenno Hoffman, who is mostly known today for his association with Edgar Allan Poe's literary executor and rival Rufus Wilmot Griswold. Hoffman was a friend of Griswold's and, despite having little literary reputation, was granted twice as much space than any other poet in his 1842 collection "The Poets and Poetry of America." Modern scholars have dismissed the anthology as a "graveyard of poets" because many of the writers collected are now virtually unknown.Hoffman helped start "The Knickerbocker" magazine and edited the first three issues. Under the strain of work, he went insane in 1849, supposedly after a servant used his manuscripts to start a fire. He was declared permanently insane and diagnosed with chronic mania, or manic-depressive psychosis. He spent the last 30 years of his life in the Harrisburg State Hospital in Pennsylvania. This is one the only examples of prose I could find of Hoffman's. It takes place in the Croton Distributing Reservoir that used to be in lower Manhattan. The reservoir should be familiar to you if you've ever read "The Waterworks" by E. L. This is the only prose fiction work of hers I could find and it was originally published anonymously in the annual “The Gift: A Christmas And New Year's Present 1845” but revealed to be authored by her by Edgar Allan Poe in his "Literati of New York" series for "Godey’s Lady’s Book" in 1846Poe wrote of her:"Miss Anne Charlotte Lynch has written little; — her compositions are even too few to be collected in volume form. Her prose has been, for the most part, anonymous — critical papers in “The New York Mirror” and elsewhere, with unacknowledged contributions to the annuals, especially “The Gift,” and “The Diadem,” both of Philadelphia. Her “Diary of a Recluse,” published in the former work, is, perhaps, the best specimen of her prose manner and ability. I remember, also, a fair critique on Fanny Kemble's poems; — this appeared in “The Democratic Review.”In poetry, however, she has done better, and given evidence of at least unusual talent. Some of her compositions in this way are of merit, and one or two of excellence. In the former class I place her “Bones in the Desert,” published in “The Opal” for 1846, her “Farewell to Ole Bull,” first printed in “The Tribune,” and one or two of her sonnets — not forgetting some graceful and touching lines on the death of Mrs. Willis.
