Using a hammer to sew denim? Here’s a weird tool to help your seams lay flat. Seamwork 2024-08-28 | 💥 Secret sewing weapon! 🔨 Do you have a hammer in your sewing kit?I was just sewing the #seamworkbrookes skirt, and the denim seams were so bulky, it was hard to press them flat. So, I grabbed a mallet and smacked it flat.🔨 Press your seam or hit it with a bunch of steam 🔨 Hit the seam with a hammer several times🔨 Give it one more press, and look how flat it is!PS: If you’re using metal hardware, it’s best not to use an actual hammer. I learned the best way to sew jean buttons… Seamwork 2024-08-22 | 👖This is my favorite method for sewing jeans buttons 🔨✂️ Use a hammer to flatten out your waistband after you press it✂️ Apply some wash-away stabilizer to the wrong side to make it easier to sew✂️ Sew a buttonhole (use topstitching thread if you want!)✂️ Apply fray check before you cut the buttonhole open✂️ Mark the exact spot you watch your button on the other side of the waistband✂️ Use an awl to make a starter hole✂️ Get your jeans button, and poke the back side through your fabric✂️ Put the cap over the top and hammer it in place (hammer from the bottom of the button)These jean buttons look great on waistbands and plackets.#seamwork #sewingtips #sewinstyle #sewing

Here’s the way to make the perfect point with no fraying.✂️ After you stitch a point, stitch another row at the corner, just inside the first.✂️ This will help keep the point from fraying.✂️ Clip the extra fabric close to the stitching.✂️ Apply a little fray check for good measure.✂️ Use a point turner, which is firm but won’t damage your fabric or poke through.Now your collar should definitely last!#seamworksnippets #sewingtips

It punches little holes in your fabric to create delicate, vintage-inspired hemstitching. I used a hemstitch needle to sew these daisy stitches on my new #seamworkbaker dress that I hacked into a top. Doesn’t it make the garment feel so special?I’ll show you how to use a hemstitch needle. All you need is the needle, a decorative stitch, some tear-away stabilizer, and 60-wt cotton thread.
How to sew a French Dart Seamwork 2024-07-25 | Have you ever sewn a French dart? 🪡If not, here’s a quick tutorial!1. Fold the dart right sides together with raw edges aligned. Pin in place.2. Starting from the raw edge of the side seam, stitch at 5/8”, tapering to zero at the dart tip.3. Leave long thread tails and do not backstitch. Instead, tie the thread tails together to secure your dart4. Finish the seam allowances of the dart however you’d like. You can serge them together, use a zigzag stitch, or use pinking shears. Since it’s cut on the bias, it won’t fray much.5. Press the dart downwards. A tailor’s ham helps with this. And you’re done! Sewing Secret! Use a Straw to Turn Spaghetti Straps. Seamwork 2024-07-24 | 🎀 How to turn a spaghetti strap with a straw! 🎀Here’s a really cool tip for turning a spaghetti strap more easily:Use a straw! 1️⃣ Sew your tube of fabric, leaving a very long thread tail at the end. Thread this tail onto a hand sewing needle.2️⃣ Drop the needle into the fabric tube, eye end first. Work the needle to the other side.3️⃣ Then grab a compostable straw or a metal one. Drop the needle into the drinking straw and insert the straw into the tube. 4️⃣ Work the straw almost to the other end. Pull the thread tail, so that the end folds into the center of the straw. Pull gently. The straw will prevent your fabric from bunching up at the end. 🎥 For 3 more ways to easily sew and turn spaghetti straps, check out my video on YouTube.
