Never Meant but its Symphony Orchestra Federico Ascari 2020-06-01 | I decided to arrange Never Meant by American Football (aka one of the best songs ever written) for Orchestra while demoing the new BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover by Spitfire Audio. Everything you hear in the video was done with that library (even the percussions, timpani, xylophone, marimba...). It was quite a challenge because the song is pretty much loop-based and orchestral arrangement is, well... the opposite! So I added lots of layers, variations, and dynamics in order to make the song flow more smoothly. The way it was originally written, it was definitely never meant (....get it?) to be arranged as orchestral composition, but I still had tons of fun doing it.I used tuned percussive instruments like marimba, celesta, xylophone and harp for the main themes and arpeggios. Clarinets and violins are playing the main vocal theme, which is also sometimes reinforced by trumpets and flutes. Horns, Cellos and strings sections fill the rest of the space. I also included orchestral drums since they were available in the library, and I felt like the song needed some movement. Let me know what you think about this arrangement! I was reamping at the studio and chose to show you how different the four speakers in my Mesa 412 cabinet actually sound. I tested this with a single on axis SM57 in mono, then in stereo (reamping both left and right guitars) and with the Fredman configuration (2 SM57, on and off axis, angled at 45 degrees in front of the speaker). The on axis SM57 was pointed directly at the intersection between the dome and the actual speaker, and I did my best to place it at the same exact spot on all four speakers. Keep in mind, moving a mic even a few millimiters can change the sound so this video is just meant to give you a rough idea about how different speakers from the same cabinet can sound. He owns a Squier Vintage Modified Baritone Jazzmaster and we wanted to compare it to my Squier Classic Vibe Bass VI and see how they performed with modern metal tones. Which one do you prefer? The first half of each riff is played by me with the Bass VI, and the second half by Davide with the Baritone Jazzmaster. We used the same strings (Ernie Ball 2837 - 6 string Bass Guitar Slinky - 20w 30 42 54 74 90) and the exact same recording chain, ampsim, processing and EQ. Both instruments are on the same tracks in my DAW so the comparison is as close as it can be. Both guitars have a 30" scale neck and are tuned to drop E. How To Set Up a Remote Mixing Session (Screen sharing + Audio streaming from a DAW) Federico Ascari 2020-03-21 | Here's a cool way to keep making music with your friends and collaborators while we're stuck at home. My friend Giovanni will share his screen and the audio stream coming out of his DAW with me, and I will apply EQ changes on his session, without transfering files. If you have a great connection, you could use this to mix sessions remotely, fix mistakes before sending a song off to mastering, or even giving mixing lessons. In order to setup a remote mixing session, you need: - A screen sharing software (like AnyDesk or TeamViewer)- The Audiomovers ListenTo pluginThe person whose audio has to be streamed (Giovanni in this case) will have to place the ListenTo plugin on his DAW output bus (after the limiter). You'll log in to your Audiomovers account, select the quality (PCM 24 bit stream is possible!) and send the private link (can be password protected) to the other person (me). Then, I only have to paste it into my brower, type the password and confirm! It looks like Audiomovers is still a young company and because of the current situation in which everyone's streaming from their houses, their servers can't always handle the high traffic. Neural DSP - Omega Ampworks Granophyre plugin! Demo and Walkthrough Federico Ascari 2020-02-25 | The new Omega Ampworks Granophyre plugin by Neural DSP is finally out! Been waiting for it since I saw it at the NAMM show last month. This plugin is great for earth shattering rhythm guitar tones. Very simple (just one head, one pedal, one 9-band graphic EQ and a double impulse loader) but very powerful. The overdrive pedal (Plumes by Earthquaker Devices) is super versatile, and in conjunction with controls like Depth and Clarity on the Granophyre head, as well as the three power tubes options (6L6, EL34, KT66) you can create a very unique tone.I tested it on the mix session of my song Evoke, which I wrote when demoing the Neural DSP Archetype Nolly. PANDA SOUND - 5 Drumkits Compared (Shokran, The Korea, Sentinel, Mankind Grief, Revenge The Fate) Federico Ascari 2020-02-16 | Hey everyone! I compared 5 drumkits by Panda Sound: Shokran kit, The Korea kit, Sentinel kit, Mankind Grief kit, and Revenge The Fate kit. These libraries run on Kontakt 5 and 6 but they're also available for Slate Trigger and Perfect Drums.The interface is very intuitive and easy to use and there are lots of super useful drum mapping presets - even for Guitar Pro, finally someone did that!There's a Mixer panel and an Advanced panel with some effects (velocity and time randomizer, tape saturation, Hi pass filter and Dampening).The kit themselves sound pretty different, and each one of them has something cool and they can all fit different contexts. My favorite has got to be the Korea kit, I think it has a great kick sample and the best cymbals overall in my opinion. As far as snares go, my favorite is the Sentinel and I dig the fat toms in the Shokran kit. They're also introducing different tube options for their heads: 6L6, EL34, KT66. I'm super curious to test the plugin in the studio, as I just LOVE Omega's heads and cabs. Squier Bass VI - Drop E metal tone test Federico Ascari 2020-01-06 | Hey guys! Here's a quick test using my new Squier Bass VI tuned to drop E.I noticed there were some metal tone tests with the Squier Jazzmaster Baritone but very few with the Bass VI. They have the same scale length (30") but different pickup configurations. I got the Bass VI cause the single coil pickups make it sound very gnarly, and it was readily available whereas the Jazzmaster has been discontinued and there's very few online for sale. Plus I love the Bass VI look! These guitars are not really built for metal (bridge is not super sturdy and saddles can't be adjusted independently) however I think it sounds pretty cool. I'll make a comparison with the Jazzmaster Baritone as soon as I find someone who has one! String gauge is 24-84. For the guitar tone, I used the STL Tones Will Putney suite (sick plugin, I love it). Bass is Nuclear Bass by Impact Studios (scroll down to get a link with a 10% discount).
